Re: Sweeney floats idea of casinos in Newark, Camden or Jersey City

It's frankly a little bit troubling that Mayor Fulop so quickly and enthusiastically endorsed such an obviously awful idea.

I know the city is desperate for tax revenue and jobs, but this type of quick-fix with so many obvious drawbacks is not the way to do it.

the WSJ article that launched this thread states that "The Friends of the Loew's will be able to hold 20 performances." Whether they choose to make those performances films or otherwise is, I suppose, up to them and their supporters.

Ah, good to know. I think FOL events almost twice-per-month seems pretty fair. I'd be okay with that.

Haven't heard anyone address whether this new performance-based ambition for the Loew's would mean the end, or drastic scaling back, of movie nights.

While I'm all for expanding the use of the theater and using it as a mid-sized performance space, I certainly hope this does not come at the expense of what I think the theatre was originally built for-- showing films. I'm hoping that whatever plans the city has in store for the Loew's, it also involves a healthy dose of cinema.

Give me a mayor who has aspirations for higher office every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

You mean his own desire for a higher position will essentially act as a term limit, preventing him from becoming an entrenched "career mayor" and turning City Hall into a patronage mill? You mean he'll have every incentive in the world to aggressively improve our city in the limited time that he's mayor so he'll have a good track record to run on for Governor or US Senator?

Yeah, that sounds just awful for the city.

Mods, can we edit the title of this thread? The water main issue seems to be affecting all of downtown and the break appears to be near Warren and Grand.

The title is confusing and people may be skipping over the thread.

Re: Cable and internet options

Wondering if anyone has any input on the cable/ internet provider options. I've had Comcast since I've lived in JC, but am about at my wits' end with the service. My cable is generally okay, but the internet service through their "Triple Play" modem/ router is beyond useless. My internet connection is completely inconsistent. Perfectly fine one minute, completely out the next. It's basically impossible for me to stream a complete movie on Netflix. And when one person gets on the internet with one laptop, it temporarily boots the other laptop off.

I see that FIOS is available in my apartment and am legitimately considering making the switch.

Can anyone tell me if they've been happy with a switch from Comcast to FIOS? What are the pluses and minuses of FIOS? Are the prices comparable?

Thanks.

I think the administration has a lot of questions to answer from the public about this. Will this decision be before the City Council and open for public input?

I certainly understand the motivation to save money but this is not a decision to be made lightly. I think the administration owes the city an explanation of what potential impact this will have on response times and what hospitals ambulances will be taking people to.

I think the building is literally falling apart. There were panels falling off the sides of the building, so they had to construct the scaffolding and covered walkways around the building to protect pedestrians from randomly falling debris. It's probably also the reason much of the sidewalk on Hudson near the building is gated off.

After all of these years, it is utterly absurd that they have not completed the necessary renovations and there is zero apparent progress being made. It looks a mess and they owe it to the neighborhood and city to finish the job.

What is up with the new digital sign on the front of this place? They threw up one of those scrolling (right-to-left) LCD signs that you'd normally see on a pawn shop or cash-for-gold joint.

Plus a bunch of the lights are out on the thing and it hasn't been programmed, so it just scrolls a bunch of generic messages and gibberish.

Guess I was wrong, but when it closed down, I looked in the windows a few times while walking by and I could swear that it was totally burned out. I guess it was just demo'd.

Was definitely not what you'd call high end (or even "clean"), but remember getting a pattie melt, fries and a coke there for like under 6 bucks. Plus, 24 hour diners are pretty much extinct downtown these days.

+1. The Flamingo burning down was a huge loss to downtown. Unfortunately, a place like that is pretty much irreplaceable since it was an authentic, greasy spoon dive right out of the 60's. I don't think City Diner could be more opposite of the Flamingo. And not in a good way.

Re: Park & Sixth Comfort Food on Grove Street

Home away from home

Had the burger at the Park and Sixth Gastropub and share a lot sentiments here. Really good burger. Very high quality beef, which was tender and perfectly seasoned. A little bit on the greasy side, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for a burger. The brie was interesting, but I'd probably just opt for the classic American cheese next time-- brie is just a little too rich and creamy for a burger for my taste. Agree with Abe_Froman about the bun. With a burger this melt-in-your-mouth tender, you need a softer bun. Biting into the burger or cutting it in half leads to it sort of falling apart or sliding off the bun. Overall, a really top notch burger.

I also totally agree with sillyscorp-- "tater tots" is a misnomer. They are potato croquettes. I was sort of expecting Sonic-style crispy tots smothered or stuffed with goat cheese and the other listed toppings. Instead we got potato croquettes, which were decent enough, but not what we ordered or wanted.

Beer selection was also pretty good.

Overall, I think the place nails it on food and atmosphere. I'll definitely be back. I have a feeling it's going to do well.

Does anyone know of a business downtown where I could print out a simple PDF file attached to an email? My printer is not available to me and need to simply access my email account and print out a document cheaply by today.

I'm assuming the public library doesn't have a printer. Anyone have any ideas?

Was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a local auto body place that's honest and reasonably priced.

I scraped the side of my car against a wall resulting in a dent and scraped paint on my door. Would probably just need some touch up paint and the dent pulled out.

Anyone know of a place where I can get this done without getting gouged? Or have a guess about how much this work will set me back?

Since the only place I have often waited for a table in DTJC is the Brownstone Diner, I'm not sure I agree with you.

To add to the list, I've had to wait at Marco & Pepe's, Roman Nose, and Satis.

I was just about to try VB3 after they made that top ten list, but will probably avoid after hearing all these reviews.

I don't think anyone here gave it bad reviews. My experience there was excellent and I'd highly recommend it. Others seem to say it was good but with a few flaws. Definitely not a place to avoid, IMO.

I've eaten at VB3 once and thought it was excellent. Had a spicy calamari appetizer that was dynamite and their personal pizzas were terrific-- on par with Razza, IMO. The service was friendly, attentive and prompt. Overall, it was a really nice meal and I'd definitely go back. The decor might have been a little too trendy and sleek for my tastes, but that's a minor quibble. I think they really deserved their placement on the top 10 new restaurants in NJ list.

That being said, it looks like the restaurant is being featured on a show called "Restaurant Stakeout" on the Food Network this week, and their prospects sound... less than promising.

Here's the episode summary:

Willie swoops in to VB3 in Jersey City to come to the aid of two cousins that opened up a high end Italian restaurant a year ago. Chef Mike is running the kitchen with precision, but his cousin Joe is having difficulties operating the restaurant and managing an unorganized staff. Without Willie's help, the doors will close and the cousins' million-dollar investment will disappear along with their business.

Re: Council person Osborne presents Pedestrian plan

Noticed some increased enforcement on Grand Street between Grove and Marin in both directions at about 5:45pm this evening.

Eastbound on Grand and Marin there was a large digital sign displaying the speed of the drivers passing by with a jackbooted JCPD officer standing next to it. Westbound near the same intersection I saw a JCPD patrol car had just pulled a car over.

Hope they keep it up.

I could not believe the amount of speeding and reckless driving I saw around DTJC today, on a day where the streets were overflowing with little kids trick or treating. I saw at least 2 cars fly through the intersection of Jersey and Newark Aves at least 20 MPH over the speed limit. One car was a BMW with pitch black tinted windows and music pumping.

I don't know when the supposed increased enforcement is coming, but it can't come soon enough.

And this is coming from a driver.

Atsushi,

Do you currently have a hot water heater with a tank in your condo that you're replacing, or are you actually adding a second water heater? Just curious as to what you mean by a "backup system."

Asking because I also have a tanked hot water heater and was also considering switching over to an electric tankless one.

I'd be interested in hearing about other people's experiences with electric tankless hot water heaters in condos, both in their effectiveness and cost savings.

This may be common knowledge-- but what exactly is going on in those three massive old factories in Waldo (350 Warren St.)? The ones which are directly across the street from the powerhouse and have "Morgan Industrial" painted on the side.

It's clear someone had designs on re-developing that complex, but it's just been sitting there, undeveloped, for several years now. Victim of the housing crash?

For illustration, this bridge is in Iowa and is on a smaller scale:

http://www.zalkjosephs.com/images/pro ... edestrian/rhythm1-big.jpg

Standing at the mouth of the Hudson the bridge would need to be architecturally impressive. Iconic. We'd call it The Jersey City Bridge. It would bring attention to the city and vastly increase the value of Downtown

Who do I have to call to get this done?

Admire your grand ambition, but have you seen the height of the cruise ships that regularly travel past JC to and from the west side of Manhattan? You'd need a 15-story tower on each side of the bridge. Kind of defeats the purpose of being able to "walk" to Manhattan when you have to wait on a block-long line of people to board some type of massive elevator first.

As for a draw-bridge-- with the sheer volume of boat traffic up and down the Hudson, it'd have to be in the "up" position 23 hours out of the day.

No, Yvonne. "1" is an Arabic numeral and "11" is not the Roman numeral expression for two, it is "eleven." Roman numerals use letters, such as "I." I know "1" and "I" look kinda similar, but they're not interchangeable. One's on the left side of the keyboard... the other over toward the right.

You appear to be as ignorant about numbers and letters and you've already proven to be about basic civics.

Everything I've seen planned for the site has included ground-level retail, not sure how much of it is still likely to be built though. Great to know the cleanup will be done soon at least.
