To all the concerned dogs, puppies, and others who seem to have inside information on this topic:

Post your full Name, Employer, and connection to this topic before your second, third, fourth, etc post. It is unfair that a few reveal their identity while others who argue and attack choose to remain anonymous.

There are 2 ways to send someone a PM or Private Message. Once you are logged in click on their Username or on the word Transfer below their post.

To retrieve a PM look for a red number on the inbox link on the left side of this page once you are logged in.

Re: How do you post a photo in a message?

For posting images viewable on this Message Forum the image must exist on the internet, many photo websites offer free hosting of photos and images.

Once you have the URL of the image there are 2 methods fo posting here, image tags and HTML.

Image tags are [ img ] your photo URL goes here but without any spaces [ /img ] - they go imediately before and after the image URL without spaces.

HTML allows you to resize, include a hyperlink, and more. You can see simple examples of HTML here:
http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/html/image-tag.html

Once you have written the code paste it into the text area when you Reply to a topic and click on the Preview button before you post to check your work.

jclist.com exploded

An explostion blew up jclist.com last night. In the article someone was quoted ?It smelled like burning plastic?; they were smelling the abovenet optical fiber cable that carries the jclist.com connection burning underground.

We switched to a different optical fiber connection to get the site online after 24 hours of being off line; the longest down time we had in the past 6 years.

Thanks for your patience

Here is a photo and article from the New York Post

Click on the "Topics" link at the bottom of the topic list on the front page.

Or you can click on the "Message Forum" link on the Main Menu.

The most annoying part is the auto jump to the most recent reply on a thread. As "common sense" as it may seem, it is the opposite of every message board, hell, every WEB PAGE ever, and it discourages users from reading and understanding the context of the discussion prior to the latest reply. No wonder this community is a piece of work.

Using the mouse to scroll and search a page for content is a normal and expected user behavior. Scrolling UP is not and is a jarring experience. Novel, unexpected user experiences = poor usabilty = irate users who don't want to come back and engage with the software.

More than 50% of our traffic comes from search engines:

When I search google.com for: jersey city, nj gun law - I land here:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... 0&forum=12&post_id=226808
A older topic that I merged today with a new somewhat related topic.

When I search google.com for: savas polish deli; jersey city, nj - I land here:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=211894
but here is another Topic that was posted today that was not merged:
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... id=226837#forumpost226837
Merging these will enable people to see all the information without having to do another search. People will be able to read about the type of establishment, proper name or address, reviews, etc all of which today's new topic omitted. Keeping similar information within the same topic provides organization, context, ease of use, brings older topics back to the front page, and makes doing research on Jersey City that much easier.

"The Beacon" topic consists of approximately 6 merges; I think the information from 2005 is useful to some and would be very hard to find if there were 6 Beacon topics.

This is not an exact science, many topics are over or under merged, sorry if anyone is not happy with this practice. I think overall the merging has worked out well. In the rules above the posting box we ask that people Reply to a related topic rather than start a New Topic. If anyone knows of a particular topic that should not have been merged post the link here and I will see if I can UN merge it.

By the way; the best search to use on this site is the "Advanced Search" link at the bottom right of this page; click on it then use that form on the next page for best results.

Re: Message Sort?

It is because you are accessing the topics from the front page, at the top of the front page it reads "Recent Replied Message Forum Topics" and when you click on a topic you see the last reply and must scroll or paginate to get to the first.

If you would like to see the first page of replies/first post when you click on a topic you can access the Message Forum by clicking the "Message Forum" link on the Main Menu on the left side of this page. Then at the top of the page you will see a "Topic options" selector; change that to "View all topics".
