My theory is that someone has a boot to which they hold the key, and they put it on there with the (probably correct) "beat you to the punch" theory that if there's already a boot on the car the Parking Auth. won't give them another one. In so doing, they avoid getting a real boot that will cost them money.

Anyone else noticing this? It's often on Jersey Ave. north of Newark but I've also seen it in the Van Vorst neighborhood....

Avel is really overpriced. In the past I went to Sip Auto Body (you can walk there from JSQ Path if you need to drop off car) and got GREAT service at a great price, and they worked great with my insurance company too (AAA). I do not think they "cheaped out" on anything but they were $1,500 cheaper than Avel eastimated for me!!! In fact they touched up a little spot on my bumper "just because" and didn't charge me or the insurance co. for it. I highly recommend them, I would got back in a heartbeat if I needed autobody work.

There are several different types of salsa, and if you interested in dancing in the clubs, you would probably learn a style called "on 2", but if you are looking to just dance at a wedding or something, you could learn "ballroom". Learning ballrom salsa will not do you much good if you want to go out dancing in the clubs of ny. If you call around, you can ask what style they teach, any school will know what you mean (and if they don't - hang up!)!

Assuming (a) you want to dance in clubs and thus dance "on 2", and (b) you don't want to go to Manhattan to learn to dance (which is actually what I would recommend, as I am a semi-pro dancer), there are a few in the local area.

1. Caribbean Soul. Lead dancers are Ismael Otero and Shanai Talmor who are relatively big names in the salsa community. website: http://www.ismaelotero.com/

2. Salsa Fever on2. Lead dancer is Mario B. It takes a certain personality to get on with the teacher, but if you do, he can show you the moves. website: http://salsafeveron2.com/Home.html

There are many many more if you are willing to go a bit further, but those are the two closest and most renown salsa schools who will teach ny "NY STYLE ON 2". Kennedy dancers does NOT teach this style (at least last time I checked) - but this does not mean they aren't a great academy! If you want to learn ballroom, sorry I can't be much help!!!!!!

There is a good one in Hoboken across from the Police Station (i think that's Hudson st??). I believe it's called Maria's. It's an old-school place, hard to know how she keeps it organized, but she does good work. I had a friend who took her wedding gown there, and I took a bridesmaid's dress there, with no complaints. Good prices.

The other day I was walking home and saw a woman hanging flyers on light poles opposing proposed development on 1st and 2nd Streets. I think it's tacky to do that (simply because most people don't take down the signs after the event has passed) but I didn't say anything. Nevertheless, even before this flyer-ing started, I was aware of the project and I think it's great! An old church is being preserved and turned into condos! Parking can't be included because the church already exists as-is, and on the other lot where a small (yes SMALL) townhouse is being built, the lot is too narrow for parking. Additionally no other brownstones, row houses, or town houses have garage doors and it would look awful to have one. THe point of living downtown is that you don't need a car!!!

moving east, the next four buildings between Montgomery and Columbus are all atrocities. All four are slab high rise apartment buildings surrounded by awful parking lots. The whole three-block stretch makes me cringe!

Does anyone know what the rules/regs are for grilling in LSP? I'm guessing it's strictly limited to the picnicing area on the south end of the park, but if anyone knows differently please share.... I have a portable grill that I'd like to use.

Actually, this is right. I have a map copied from 30 Montgomery, and one portion of this zone falls exactly in the boundaries you outline. Other blocks in the area (Kensington, Jewett, Fairview) are also part of the proposed zone, but the "mass" of the zone is where JJ says.

in greenville, the zone is bounded by Danforth and Lembeck between Garfield and Ocean.

Just to clarify what was incorrectly posted earlier, Fairview is WELL within the R1-A zone. Maps are public record so you can check it out for yourself. Your councilperson should have a copy. Or, you can go to Planning at 30 Montgomery and ask to see a map there. They can't tell you no.

Everyone should continue to call their council person and implore that they bring this item back onto the agenda for the next council meeting. Any claim that fears of so-called "spot zoning" are false - also public record is a legal opinion that says it is not spot zoning. These council people were elected to represent their areas and protect the city - they are not doing either. Right now the major roadblock is Sottolano because he opposes this NOT ONLY in his district, but citywide. He is attempting to influence everyone.

Please, continue to tell your councilpeople how you feel - this item is very important to the future of our city so no more ugly houses go up in what should be a beautiful neighborhood.
