Renaming a street for one of the uglier new buildings we have in downtown, merely because it has the (now pasee) name of trump on the marquee? Please, stop embarassing me.

I'm glad to hear that others are perpelxed by the "cheerleaders" on the roadside. I was never a cheerleader, but when fundraising as a child for whatever I WAS involved in, we never held buckets to passing by cars without "earning" it. Wash a car, bake a cookie, do SOMETHING!

And as far as the boys in the parking lot (I'm talking to you, Target) selling candies out of a big box, that is just insane. Does Target (or wherever) not have the power to stop this from happening on their property??

Re: Extremely dangerous and irresponsible conduct of PATH train service Halloween night 2008

this sounds like a nightmare. I was on the PATH around the same time, and I now realize how lucky I was to have taken the train from WTC.Quote:

Robocub wrote:
I had the great misfortune to be on the PATH train last night NJ bound on the 33St-Journal Sq line. At around 3:30am the Path pulled into the 14th St. station in Manhattan. At which time the train was beyond capacity already, yet passengers on the platform tried to push their way on the dangerously over crowded train. The air conditioning was not operating on the train. Because of the over crowding, the train sat at 14th St. for about 15 minutes. After waiting for about 10 minutes at a stand still, the train conductor closed the doors and the train continued to sit in the station for about 30 minutes. It was a cattle car with passengers packed in way beyond capacity to a dangerous level. Combined with the lack of air and the heat, all the passengers were in a highly agitated state. People were beginning to panic and some were starting fights. Even as PA cops came down the station as we could see through the windows, passengers were begging for the train doors to be opened, nothing was done to alleviate these horrendous conditions. After about 30 minutes the train moved onto the next station, 9th St. As scary as the experience was so far, the train stopped in the tunnel before reaching 9th St. We sat there with no air conditioning or announcement in sardine-can conditions for another 30 minutes. Passengers were beginning to pass out and a lot of people were getting volatile. Eventually someone had the good sense to hit the Emergency button and miraculously the train moved into 9th Street. Hoards of passengers escaped the train once we arrived at 9th Street. Why the train was sitting in the tunnel was never explained.

I cannot begin to describe how extremely dangerous and scary this whole situation was. Not once did any PA personnel make an announcement explaining the situation. Passengers were begging to be let off the train at 14th St but the doors were kept closed which was an outrage and beyond dangerous. This was a major public safety hazard and an outrage that the Port Authority can run the PATH system in such a reckless and dangerous manner putting the safety of passengers at risk.

I encourage anyone who was on that train on Halloween night coming home to Jersey City to register a complaint with the PA at this email address. PATHCustomerService@panynj.gov

CLicking on the "it gets worse" and then saying "no" to the Newport issues STILL sends a letter out complaining about the Newport station. (Which, of course, you only figure out after hitting send and get sent a copy of your letter.)

The site is a scam. Same thing happened to me - I said I didn't agree with the need to invest in Newport, but the letter sent on my behalf still mentioned newport. I wanted to complain but only after the fact realized that the webiste has NO contact or identification information. Definately avoid this site, it's bad BAD news.

Normally I'd agree with you, but another lady in there inquired about the situation and the employee shrugged her shoulders with a "too bad" attitude and proceeded to drop quarters in the last 4 machines that had been loaded with drop-offs. I would think that she'd leave 1/2 of the machines open for walk-ins, but i guess not! (There wasn't a dryers issue, there was a washers issue, but same difference)

Does anyone have any experience with the Lucky Laundromat on Jersey Ave. across from the C-Town?

I've found that their dryers don't dry well (you have to use the ones closer to the front of the building to get a good warm dry, which are typically used by the owners doing drop-off loads).

Also, today one of the employees was using ALL of the washing machines. In other words, only drop-off was getting done, and if you went in to do your own laundry, you were S.O.L. I saw 4 people come in and leave after discovering this.

Are they normally this unprofessional or is it my bad luck??

Anyone know who the politican is who has people driving around JC yelling messages out of their car on loudspeakers? They've driven down my street several times this week, and I find it obnoxious. If a politican is so blatant to interfere with what was an otherwise beautiful and quiet saturday on our block before he's even elected, how unconcerned will he (she) be once in office?

I'd like to know who it is so I can NOT vote for them. And I vote....

And isn't there some kind of rule against noise pollution?

Re: No more passageway? Developer's protest may alter Newark Ave. redevelopment
Home away from home

Alb, I think that some of your ideas are good ones.

The idea of relocating the paseo isn?t in and of itself a bad idea. The great thing about the proposed location is (in my opinion ) the block of Newark between Barrow and Grove is really long so this would break things up. Also I think it?s a benefit that it?s not a wide lot. I know some people think it?s too tight. But I think that it?s more intimate. That?s a matter of opinion, I realize that. But I think that a very wide space (like the width of a normal street) would be too wide. I am not certain what the lots are that you are referring to by World Fruit, but my concern there would be that it connects Newark and Bay (or is that first??) and the back street isn?t commercial. The paseo that they are talking about now would connect Newark and Columbus, with Columbus turning into stores and wider sidewalks, so that it would be more shopping (not the ?highway? that we have now). That makes more sense than connecting it to a residential street.

The idea of the paseo on the roof I think is bad for the merchants just because they want lots of street activity and people milling around, walking to and fro, and moving that to the roof would take away from that. Also how do you have restaurants on a roof if people live below?

But I think that this kind of thinking could give some good ideas and alternatives.

Fourth, if the owners of the burned out lot want to keep their lot, would it be possible to put the Paseo somewhere else? Example: aren't there some parking lots behind the World Fruit Farm building, on the north side of Newark? Could someone put a Paseo there?

Fifth: what if we let the owners of the burned out property rebuild but made them put a funky and/or high-end outdoor food court kind of area up on the roof? In other words, why couldn't we have a Paseo in the Sky rather than a Paseo in a Concrete Canyon?

I think that has become readily apparent. We all want what is best for our neighborhood, and while we may disagree on what THAT is, some people are clearly either not revealing who they are/what their interests are/who they have cahoots with, or they're just out to pick a fight. It's unfortunate because I think we all (most) would like the big picture to be achieved (a better downtown) but hidden alliances bring everything into question and even what would otherwise be a good/creative/exciting idea is tarnished by alterior motives.

The problem with this train of thought is that you're assuming if the money isn't spent on the Newark Plan with Paseo that it will be on the streetscape improvements. The two are unrelated and funding for one does not defer to the other in the event of the paseo not happening. Funding comes from different sources and often times from grants, if I understand correctly, which are not transferrable from one to the other or not applicable to both

For the millionth time, there is not at this point in time Eminent Domain! The city wants to BUY the property from DelForno. This is what they said at the meeting and you can see it on JC1!!!!! And not forcibly buy it, but agreeably buy it.Quote:

I do, however, disagree with the paseo - especially if it is going to be located in the empty lot steps away from Grove Street.

I'm not a huge fan of Del Forno, but the idea of seizing their property, even though they're still paying their property taxes, to build outdoor restaurant seating is really outrageous.

If the city were taking away a building because it was about to fall into the ocean or it was hurting the environment, OK, I could support that.

But I think it's horribly, horribly unfair to use eminent domain and seize someone's private property just to create outdoor restaurant seating.

And, OK, maybe it also helps people get from Newark to Columbus, but it's not as if Barrow is five miles away from Grove. The Grove-Barrow block is a very short block as it is.

I'm a lot more liberal than a lot of people here, and I think the government should intervene more to help homeless people and improve welfare benefits and all that, but I've never in my life thought that the government ought to seize private property from business people so that I can sit outside eating spaghetti.

I think the logical explanation for this plan is that Del Forno either failed to pay the right bribes or have done something else that ticked off the powers that be, and the result is that the powers that be came up with a bizarre plan just to mess with the Del Forno people's head. Pretty soon, the Paseo plan will go away, but after the poor Del Forno people have spent a lot of sleepless nights and wasted a lot of time fighting this proposal.

The idea of closing Barrow street is ludacris. Why would we want to cut down on the circulation of the city?

And who out there actually thinks DelForno would build something? that's laughable.

Re: No more passageway? Developer's protest may alter Newark Ave. redevelopment

Opposition to this is so silly. This is a nice looking plan! those who oppose this should quit complaining about how trashy newark ave. is. we all agree that the street needs an upgrade, but then when people try to do something about it, everyone has one complaint or another. There is no reason to oppose a "nook" of cafes. No, vagrants will not hang out there because it would/could be gated (nicely) at off-hours. The plan that the city put forth wasn't even for eminent domain so that is not even on the table at this point. The plan was to buy the lot from the DelForno's. That means that if they won't sell it, a new plan needs to be made. There can't just suddenly be eminent domain, the law doesn't work that way, there are steps and the process wasn't put in place for eminent domain. Crying and begging for upgrades to the Avenue is just pointless if when someone comes around to do something, you complain. ANd by the way, the paseo has nothing to do with the street improvements - they can go hand in hand but the approval or denial or delay of one doesn't have anything to do with the other.

Re: Newark Avenue Redevelopment

To clarify a point of confusion, the paseo involves NO eminent domain. Should the City choose to have a paseo, the property would be PURCHASED at fair market value from the owner.

Also, if anyone is unsure about a paseo (whether it would work or what one is), City Planning showed council a VERY good video about how paseos work and you can sometimes see it on channel 1. It would be a passageway of cafes, etc. Not an alley. If you've been to Europe or South America, you have no doubt been in one.

I've never heard of any of them. But, I would, hands down and without hesitation, recommend Dr. Thomas Miglaccio in Hoboken (Washington and 6th). The office is Brescia and Miglaccio. His bedside manner is very professional but approachable.
Plus, they just moved into a new and very nice office.

I have been successfully reimbursed on more than one occasion. Have a picture of the pothole and your car damage. exact location is required.
I don't remember the department who handles this but the contact person's name with the city is Bill Mauer and you can probably call the city clerk to get his number.

Update: the office is RISK MANAGEMENT as noted by poster "heights" a few messages up. That's who you gotta talk to....

I used to attend the Journey NY (previously mentioned on this site) and enjoyed it. The only reason I left is that it was too big for my taste. It meets in the Manhattan Center, so easily accessible from the path. I also tried the Journey Jersey City but didn't like it so much.

I currently (though not as frequently as I would like to) attend the Village Church, in Greenwich Village on W. 11th St., meeting in a 7th Day Adventist Church. It's presbyterian, youthful (people in the 30s are probably the average, but college kids as well as grown families abound). Id' recommend it.

I've been in your shoes. WHen I first moved here I tried congregations in JC and Hoboken and was sadly dismayed.

it's crazy that newport is still getting tax incentives for their construction. Yes, some of their new buildings are nicer, but the city really should insist that Newport contribute more to the city as a whole. Or do they? All I see is a relatively exclusionary neighborhood. If they get this incentive they should embrace being part of JC. Spruce up the mall parking garage along Marin at a minimum!!!!!

Work halted at Downtown site
Saturday, August 16, 2008
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
A threat of collapse caused by the use of the incorrect construction materials resulted in city officials stopping work at a construction site in Downtown Jersey City yesterday afternoon, officials said.

The builder used lightweight "framing studs" rather than "structural steal studs" on the second-floor of the building under construction at the corner of First Street and Jersey Avenue, said Jersey City Construction Official Ray Meyer.

As a result, a number of the framing studs buckled under the weight of the construction continuing above them. City officials ordered work stopped, First Street was closed at the location and a police officer was posted at the intersection.

By yesterday evening, the building's architect had put together a plan to shore up the second-floor to prevent collapse and the city was to inspect it so the roads could be reopened, Meyer said.

Next, the architect will provide a plan to replace the framing studs with structural studs and if approved, the project will be allowed to continue, Meyer said.
