I like Frank's Pizza! The eggplant pizza made "well done" is perfection. The pizza has a thin crust. I don't claim it's the best pizza in Jersey City, but hits the spot!

Debate #2 announced for April 17th

PolitickerNJ, Saint Peter's University to host Jersey City mayoral debate

By PolitickerNJ Staff | March 21st, 2013 - 11:48am

Candidates for mayor of Jersey City will square off next month in a debate hosted by PolitickerNJ and Saint Peter's University.

The debate is scheduled for April 17 at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Councilman Steve Fulop and community activist and former Seton Hall basketball star Jerry Walker.

The one-hour-long event will be moderated by PolitickerNJ Editor Darryl Isherwood and Nicholas Chiaravalloti, executive director of the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership at Saint Peter's.

The event will be held in the University's Mac Mahon Student Center. Tickets to the event will be distributed by the three campaigns as well as through the university.

Healy is vying for his third full term in office. He took over as mayor in 2004 after the death of then-mayor Glenn Cunningham. He won re-election in 2005 and again in 2009. Fulop was first elected to the city council in 2005 and like Healy won his 2009 bid for re-election. Walker is a relative latecomer to the race but says his lack of funds won't hinder him.

To date, the race has been a nasty one, with both sides trading allegations of campaign finance misconduct. Healy has charged Fulop with pay to play violations for allegedly steering the school board to award an insurance contract to a friend. Fulop denies he had anything to do with the adoption of the contract. The councilman has in turn hit Healy with allegations that money received from disgraced FBI informant Solomon Dwek during the mayor's 2009 bid for re-election was never donated to charity as Healy promised. Healy disputes the allegation and says the money was donated to 43 charities.

The election is scheduled for May 14.

April, NOBODY has sunk lower than Dan Levin. In downtown we now have our own Benedict Arnold... Dan Levin. This guy is a traitor to the progressive political movement in Jersey City.

Is Dan willing to take a pledge that he or his wife will not take a city or county job after the election? Is that what this is all about? I truly hope I'm wrong.

The Jersey City Historic Preservation Commission voted Monday to table an application by Verizon Wireless to place cellular antennas on a building in the Harsimus Cove Historic District.

More than a dozen residents who oppose placing the antennas on the building at 238 Fifth St. attended the meeting at City Hall and the commissioners did not appear thrilled with the proposal.

?What you are asking us to do is accept something that is seen from the street, which if it was an addition to the building, we would probably have a hard time with,? said Commissioner Stephen Gucciardo.

After Verizon?s experts were peppered with questions and residents had spoken, it was Verizon?s lawyer who asked that the proposal to place antennas on the century-old building of 43 condominium units be tabled.

Just curious to see if such list existed or database existed in NJ? Is it a real thing?

I'm certainly not going to put anyone on it, was just curious to see if any of my previous bad tenants were on it.

There's no such thing in NJ. Landlords have to do due diligence - credit checks, verifying and contacting prior landlords, and using a bit of intuition when interviewing prospective tenants.

Sound's like it's not the place for you. I like it when waiters leave us alone when dining. You can go to GP's for Italian cuisine and the waiters will interrupt mid conversation to ask if everything is ok. Last time at GP's everything was ok until we were interrupted by the waiter and if there was a problem I would have let them know.

I respectfully disagree. I think that Dan wants to get elected and is willing to sacrifice his reputation to achieve those ends. Fulop and Levin have butted heads in the past, nothing wrong with that, but they were never what I would characterize as being political adversaries.

If Dan had been on Walker's ticket, there wouldn't have been the outcry against him. Dan is putting all of his eggs in the Healy basket, and on election day, I think we know how this will down...

And Dan Levin ... he WILL lose the election, and likely he'll lose a lot more than that. The Cedar Grove incident is the latest example of lack of ethics and lawlessness.

And when will the money be returned? Statements in press releases are cheap. Show us the money, and the list of campaign contributors!

Jersey City election 2013: School district's state monitor working for Walker campaign
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

The controversial state monitor of the Jersey City school district confirmed yesterday she is working with the mayoral campaign of former local basketball star Jerry Walker.

Cathy Coyle, an ex-school administrator who returned to the school district last year as a state monitor, said yesterday she is working as the Walker campaign?s treasurer. Coyle said she met Walker, who runs an afterschool program for the school district, about a year ago....

Team Walker, Walker?s afterschool program, won a one-year, $176,500 contract with the school district last August, though it has worked with both the district and the city for years.

Both Coyle and Walker said they don?t think that contract represents a conflict of interest that should preclude Coyle from working with Walker?s campaign.

Re: Jersey City election 2013: Healy attacked for Cedar Grove fundraiser
Home away from home
Home away from home

By Darryl R. Isherwood | February 28th, 2013 - 4:29pm

Jersey City Mayor Jerry Healy, facing accusations that his campaign sought to circumvent campaign finance rules at a fundraiser Wednesday, is returning all of the money raised at the event.

Josh Henne, a spokesman for the Healy campaign said though the campaign "always follows both the letter and the spirit of the law... Healy has already instructed his finance team to return any money raised last night."

According to the invitation, fundraiser was hosted by MBI Gluck Shaw lobbyists Paul Bontempo and Rudy Garcia and Verizon Vice President of Government Affairs Uli Diaz. It was held at the Cedra Grove home of Jose "Pepi" Garcia, according to the invitation to the Feb. 27 event.

The invitation asked supporters for a $1,000 donation and gave the option to donate directly to the Healy campaign or to "For New Jersey Families," an independent expenditure committee. The invitation clearly outlined that donating to the committee meant "no limits - no pay to play."

Under campaign finance law, independent expenditure groups may not coordinate with a campaign, state Election Law Enforcement Commission Executive Director Jeff Brindle, who was speaking generally and not about the specific fundraiser.

The group was formed January 30 by Rich Torraca, a state Democratic operative. Torraca did not return a call or email for comment.

Early Thursday, Healy spokesman Josh Henne said the campaign had no knowledge of the invitation. Later, he issued a statement saying the money would be returned.

Healy is known to have attended the fundraiser and the invitation has the required "Paid for by Team Healy 2013" line.

Bontempo, who is president and director of MBI Gluck Shaw did not return a call for comment. Diaz also did not return a call for comment.

HOBOKEN ? Flooding under bridges between 18th Street in Jersey City and Observer Highway in Hoboken -- caused the heavy overnight rain -- has created traffic chaos during the commute this morning.
Jersey City police closed off traffic entering Hoboken from 18th Street in Jersey City via Marin Boulevard and Grove Street because of flooding under both bridges at around 9:15 a.m.

Some drivers attempted to try to drive through Jersey City from Hoboken along Marin Boulevard. Cars could be seen stranded on Grove Street.

Traffic has been bumper to bumper on the westbound lane of 18th Street as cars head to the only remaining entrance to Hoboken on the southern-most side of the city via Jersey Avenue.

There was flooding at Harrison Street and Jersey Avenue under the bridge, but the road remained open to traffic.

Flooding was also seen at Coles Street and 17th Street, where a car was also stranded in water. Cars were also reported stranded at Coles and 13th streets.

A few cars have already been towed from Route 7 near Fishhouse Road in Kearny and there was an accident between a car and a truck on Central Avenue near Route 1&9 in Kearny, witnesses at the scene have reported.
