Re: Moving to Historic Jersey City

The Newark Avenue building and the adjacent parking lot would be ripe for redevelopment. Of course, it would mean Jordan's Lounge would close too.

Re: Voting should be mandatory

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vote-by-mail_in_Oregon
There is already a precedent for voting without going to a voting booth. We also have a long history of absentee ballot use.

I think we could increase voting by changing election day to Sunday and increasing the modes by which we vote. If I can go into any Duane Reade and get money from my Chase account or vote for Chaz Bono by phone, why can't I be issued a voting PIN?

I am not in favor of mandatory voting - although I am sure the Supremes would consider the penalty a tax - I can imagine a slowly evolving Protestant theocracy/oligarchy with an extremely restrictive immigration policy and a minimally restrictive right to bear arms.

If we are concerned about increasing representation, why not allow one parent of each minor to vote as proxy for their kids?

As an afterthought, calling someone an idiot puts you in the same box as the poster who calls people retards.

Re: Flooding on Grove Street

My understanding is that downtown, and maybe the rest of the city, does not have separate storm sewers, but combined storm and sanitary sewers. Water coming up thru your toilet or bathtub is dirty.

Plumbers can install a backflow check valve that can (maybe) stop sewers backing up into your house, but you may be passing it on to your neighbor.

After the first time this happened, and it was apparent that it was sewage, my doctor insisted I get the Hep A vaccine.

Until the storm lets up, don't flush. Actually, this might be an acceptable time to toilet in Hamilton Park rather than your house.

We asked Tribeca Pediatrics last time we needed a toilet and they were accommodating. The new Italian place is worth a try, as is Basic. The cost of a coffee at Basic is worth sparing your kid having his playtime cut short.

I also think I saw a Porto-Pottie in the park when I walked by recently.

Resto has opened. I looked at menu - no surprise Italian-American. If the food is good this will be a welcomed addition.

Maybe we can convince 30 Acres to serve them, or suggest food pantries distribute them to the needy.

Looks like a restaurant is going in across Newark Ave from Hudson Camera as well.

Is there a difference between an "extraordinary tax base growth" and more taxes being paid to the city?

Are you certain that there are three separate collections? I put all recyclables - paper, cans, bottles, etc. - in a sturdy clear plastic bag and they take it - no problem. Regular garbage goes in dark green plastic bags - again no problem.

FYI - we had a theatre downtown - where the Majestic Condos and restaurant now stand. The owner, the owner of the wooden house next to Ibby's, or that was the rumor, let it fall into such disrepair so that he was allowed to tear it down. I think Palace drugs was a theatre too.

Nice to see a developer and source of financing not afraid to share their project with a non-profit recreation center. Is it a bad assumption that some of these kids come from families that would qualify for moderate income housing?

Can someone explain the phrases:

as they relate to this issue.

Just had a slice of plain with a pepsi - liked the pepsi, but all that cornmeal was unpleasant. Is this some regional style?

As I eat pizza as a snack and not a gourmet experience, the $4.50 was a bit steep.

Craig's list - get AND check references and do a credit check. Realtors want the commission, owners want the rent and people who will maintain the property.

Re: Important resale factors to consider when buying a condo

I would go back one step and think about whether a condo is your best alternative. Have you weighed owning a rowhouse/brownstone against owning a condo? This is a real option in DTJC. Not sharing decisions about your living arrangements, having a garden, etc. can mean a lot. Costs can be off-set by a rental unit occupied by someone you choose and can get rid of easily if you want more space. There will never be any more 19th century houses built, but most "luxury" rentals can be converted to condos with upgrades and paperwork.

JKLM and Hero thanks the links - The temporary nature of Metro Plaza was a given from the day it was proposed, as I recall. For me, the city's urbanization/desuburbanization policy is very encouraging.
