Washing machine repairman
Home away from home
Home away from home

Our Bosch axxis front loader washing machine is broken - no longer draining water. Can someone recommend a good and reputable repairman that we can call?

Thanks in advance.

Re: How to press a tardy contractor

Perhaps a little off topic, but I'm wondering what's the best way to pay a contractor throughout a major project but also protecting myself at the same time? We have a major bathroom restoration coming up, should I pay half up front, and half once it's done? Can I split the payment into more stages? If so, what are the reasonable "payment milestones"?

TIA.

Where to report - (almost) falling electrical / utility post

Anyone notice the electrical / utility post by Tommy Two Scoops that's almost falling over - and it has tons of wires / cables connected? Where can we report that for repair?

Probably a good idea to get that fixed before school starts.

TIA.

Sounds like besides the two places on Newark that sells Thai groceries, there's nothing in Jersey City? I really missed the Hong Kong Supermarket when it was here (now occupid by Target). May not be the best, but they had tons of stuff!!!

Thanks for all the info so far! Can someone provide the address for Kam Man in Edison?

Can you suggest what are the questions we should ask / find out? Thinking of buying in the area...

The first home is always a big learning experience. I took everything I learned from the first one and asked all the questions I should've asked when I bought my current home. I'm much, much happier for it. The funny thing is when some friends were buying their first home downtown, I warned them about certain issues that they should look into, especially with an older home. But they had their minds made up from the get-go and there was no talking them down. Fast-forward two years, and the buyer's remorse has taken over. I bite my tongue and politely refrain from I-told-you-so. There are just some things you learn the hard way. I agree, home inspections in NJ mostly are a joke, especially when it comes to condos. They spend more time making sure appliances work and next to no time checking out critical infrastructure.

In a parallel universe where everything would work as I planned / envisioned, I completely agree with you. I wish I could plan my kids' bathroom visits, and their temper tandrums.

Unfortunately, in this real world, things don't always work how you like them to, especially when it concerns kids. Hence, I let my kids pee in bushes, but always discreetly, and only innocent plants may be harmed once in a while. When nature calls, you work with it - you cannot fight against it.

Because we live in a city with stores and restaurants all around the area, there is really no excuse to let your child pee in public. There could be more public restrooms but there is not so go use the bathroom in a store or restaurant. Don't want to pay the 2.5 for a drink? Well then don't have a kid...

And parents can control whether or not their kids pee in public. Regular peeing times, being aware that your kid drank a 16 oz drink, peeing before leaving a place where there is a bathroom.

Unless your kid is extremely sick and puking, I don't want to see your kid peeing in public. That is disgusting and everyone should shame those parents.

Does anyone know what's the best deal for a new subscriber? I checked verizon's website, and triple play is $99.99 / month right now. I thought usually new subscribers get better deals than existing customers who are renewing?

I've had enough with comcast!!!

TIA!

The liberty science center is showing the Dark Knight rises in IMAX!!! Tickets go on sale on 6/11at noon, according to the Facebook announcement. Also, "advance reservations are recommended".

I saw one of the Harry Potter movies in the Imax dome, and all I can say is WOW!!! MUCH better than the 3D!!!

Also, if we continue to support the liberty science with "mainstream" movies such as this, they'll likely to continue to show more of them in the future. I think the new Spiderman movie would be awesome there too!!!

On a unrelated note, I just read in the latest issue of National geographic that you can send a whole coconut - "as is", no box, no packaging, nothing - via the Post Office. Just scribble on the address on the coconut itself, and off it goes!!!

next time I'm in hawaii, I'll try that

I live around VVP, and is smelling this "wonderful" smell right now.

I've lived here about 5 years now, and how come I've never smelt it before (perhaps I just never noticed?) At a minimum, I don't remember smelling like tihs for consecutive days like this time.

Re: What to do with toddlers in Jersey City?

Try taking the ferry from Paulus Hook across the river to Battery Park. It's a really nice ride in the summer (only downside is that it's more expensive than the PATH). It's a more open environment, so perhaps the kids can be entertained by looking at the view rather than the people

I think the Yellow Taxi ferry leaves from 15 Warren also goes to Battery park, but I think that one's even more expensive? Not sure...

We also took the lightrail to the hoboken parks last year many times (and now the newport park) - and that was entertaining for the kids too because they were distracted by the view.

On a side note: I WISH there's a nice (kid-friendly in all aspects!) public pool that's accessible in the area!!!!!

I'm scared of venturing into the city, my 3 yr old is very interested in gender and weight at this time and has frequently embarrassed me by inquiring loudly on the gender of different people and have gotten my fair share of dirty looks. Another time he point blank asked, "Mami, why is that lady so big?" AS the lady was passing us by. During our walks he asked if a very tall man with dreadlocks to his shoulders was a man, the man heard it and answered with yes, I am a man. My toddler replied, are you sure? So I have to grow thicker skin or somehow get my toddler to ask questions quietly.

Maybe I should try the light rail and get my toddler acclimated with it first before I take a path train or he'll have a ton of questions aimed at random strangers.

The trek to Battery Park is not as bad as you think - just one PATH ride away. Once you're there, you can play in any of the many parks in battery park!!! We had a lot of good memories there last summer

Also, I heard the new pool at Johnson Ave (got that right? You know - the one that opened last year) is nice too, in the mornings.

Re: Kennedy Tiles on 1/9
Home away from home
Home away from home

Thanks for everyone's input!!! Really appreciate all the feedback.

We're now planning to check out Home Depot and Nemo Tile in NYC this weekend, just to get an idea of what we can get and prices, and potentially do some pricing comparison online afterwards. If that doesn't work (ie we still can't find what we want), we'll have to visit the other places in NJ - but sounds like we should get a friend with a car involved (and buy him lunch

Also - figure I'd post this question here too:
Our shower has been leaking water downstairs, and we've gotten several contractors in for estimates. All of the contractors said the pan is leaking and therefore needs to be completely re-done. However, the first two quoted me prices on re-doing the entire shower. The last contractor came in and said we have the choice to either re-do the whole thing (as the first two), or just do the bottom half of the shower (and tiles) and the pan - that we could leave the mid- to upper half of the shower un-touched. (Note: the first two contractors never offered me this option).

We're not experts at all in this type of things, and is wondering if anyone has advice to offer as whether we really need to do the whole shower, or can just do the lower half (of course, saving some money in the process). Our goal is to spend the necessary money now to do the right thing, and hopefully not worry about it for years! Does that mean we should re-do the whole shower?

I hope the rambling above makes sense...

TIA again!!!

Kennedy Tiles on 1/9
Home away from home
Home away from home

We've been recommended to get our bathroom tiles from kennedy Tiles on 1/9. However, we don't have a car (and an expired liencese does not allow us to rent a car either)

Does anyone has recommendations on where else to go to get tiles that's more public transportation friendly?

Also, if we do have to go to Kennedy Tiles, I'm thinking we can get a taxi as a last resort. But does anyone know how much that would cost (round trip)?

Thanks in advance.

I've heard a lot of good things about Basil on this board, and I'm wondering if anyone has Basil re-do their shower specifically? We're looking to re-do our (leaky) shower and is thinking about hiring Basil.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

PS If anyone has other contractors to recommend, we'd appreciate that too.

Thanks in advance.

Probably doesn't belong here, but since it's related, I figure I'd rant here: can Jehovah's Witness also stop coming every other saturday morning? If I had refused (politely 2+ times at least already), I would think that it's a very clear sign that we're not interested, right?

Agreed that trying to refiance with your existing mortgage company is a waste of time. When I did my re-fi last year, I called everyone (banks, brokers, etc), and my exisiting mortgage company (Bank of America) - guess what, BofA quoted me the highest rates and fees. I just took it that they don't want my business anymore, and accordingly, I took my business elsewhere. Take that BofA (not that they care, and sadly, that's where the problem is!!!).
