POLICE BEAT
Nab car burglary suspects on Charles St.
Thursday, March 05, 2009

Four Jersey City teens were arrested Wednesday on charges they burglarized parked cars along Charles Street, reports said.

Police officers in an unmarked car were called to Charles Street and Milton Avenue at 12:27 a.m. on a report that suspicious-looking kids were checking out parked cars, reports said.

The officers observed the teens, ages 16 and 17, peering into windows, checking door handles, and decided to question them, reports said.

One of the youths had an owner's manual for a Chrysler, a flashlight, a GPS system and camera, but was unable to explain where he got them, reports said.

Police found a 2006 Chrysler with its interior light on and a 1999 Ford Exhibition with a damaged door lock, and confirmed with the owners that the items had been stolen from their cars, reports said.

Both cars were parked in driveways on Charles Street.

I was looking at the crime statistics supplied by the JCPD on there website and I get the impression the statistics are being manipulated. Crime in January of 09 compared to crime in January of 08 shows a decrease in every category except murder and rape which has went up since last year. Me and many of the people I have spoken to are under the impression crime seems to be going up especially robbery and burglary. The stats say something different though.

http://njjcpd.org/

My question is what do other JClisters think? Do you think the numbers are being manipulated or do you think people are just getting a false impression? Since the recession has started even in the suburbs robbery and burglary seems to have went up. Why would it go down during a recession in the second largest city in the state that has a good sized criminal population?

I know it was obvious, I was pointing it out to someone else that was calling it just a robbery. If he didnt think it was an initiation that means there might be a couple others that didnt put it together as well.

Is there a pack leader who gets all the goods? Does he have a brighter coat and shiner bling to attract the females?

This doesnt sound like an average robbery more like a gang initiation.

One of the attackers screamed out, "Just do it already! Stab him! We know your whole family!"

The reason I make the correction is GrovePath often puts the wrong neighborhood. It is not Bergen/Laffayette though, the northern border of BL is part Grand street and part of Communipaw.

Sadly this time, Grovepath is correct. And McGinley Sq. (which is a district not a ward) is on the border of B&L and JSQ (they are wards). Bergen Lafayette extends to Mongomery st. to the north. For all of us geography buffs, I suggest this link to identify the 6 wards of JC (A,B,C,D,E,F) more easily. You have to zoom in on the map to get the ward boundaries.

http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... /06/jersey-city-ward-map/

I am not disagreeing on the ward I am disagreeing on the neighborhood. If your basing the borders of the neighborhood on the wards, they cover areas of different neighborhoods. For example the Heights is one neighborhood but has two wards with in its borders. I do like your map though and I saved it for the future. Here is another map that shows the neighborhoods.

I am suprised the Jersey Journal did not print the crime statistics so far this year. Every year I can remember them doing an article on how much crime has gone up or down. It is going to be March soon and they still havent printed it. Did I miss it this year or was it never printed? It would be nice if they printed it a few days before the election, at least if they print it late that would be a good time.

Update: $500,000 bail for ex-con accused of drugging, raping 15-year-old boy in Jersey City
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Monday February 23, 2009, 2:19 PM

Bail has been set at $500,000 cash only for the 45-year-old ex-con who made his first appearance in court today on charges that he raped a 15-year-old boy after enticing him to smoke crack at his Jersey City home this weekend, official said.

Alnorah Howard of Brinkerhoff Street and Monticello Avenue, made his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing court at about 1 this afternoon via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny.

Howard was arrested yesterday on charges of aggravated sexual assault, child abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and various drug charges including possession with intent to distribute, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said today.

The defendant, who has served prison time before, seemed calm during the hearing, but when CJP Judge Richard Nieto explained the size of the bail, Howard rocked back in his chair in the small video conferencing room.

Investigators allege that prior to the rape at Howard's residence at about 4:30 a.m. yesterday, the boy was "coerced to take cocaine," DeFazio said, adding that detectives have also recovered drug paraphernalia.

Howard and the boy are not related but they knew each other, DeFazio said.

The victim's father reported the alleged sexual assault to police at the West District station house and officers then contacted the prosecutor's office's Special Victims Unit. The SVA took over the investigation and busted Howard later in the day, DeFazio said.

The boy was taken to Christ Hospital in Jersey City to be examined and was later released, DeFazio said.

The crime of aggravated sexual assault caries a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison upon conviction, DeFazio said.

Howard was in state prison from Sept. 18, 1998 to Dec. 14, 2001 after being sentenced to a five-year for drug possession, state corrections officials said.

Cops: 100 bags of heroin seized during drug bust near Downtown Jersey City park
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Tuesday February 17, 2009, 5:05 PM

Jersey City police doing surveillance last night at a Downtown park known for drug dealing arrested three men and a woman, seized 100 bags of suspected heroin and recovered property taken during a burglary to a car, police said today.

Officers doing surveillance at Angel Ramos Park at Wayne and Barrow streets spotted 44-year-old Orlando Garcia and 45-year-old Ruth Turner "hanging out" in front of a house and recognized them from previous drug arrests, reports said.

They watched as Garcia and another man walked to a car on Monmouth street occupied by 32-year-old Carlos Romero and 33-year-old Hector I. Figueroa, reports said.

Garcia got into the back seat and police closed in on the vehicle after seeing Romero take an object out of the glove compartment and hand it to Garcia, reports said.

Police converged on them and found a paper bag containing 100 glassine bags of suspected heroin in the glove compartment, reports said.

Romero, of Van Wagenen Avenue, was arrested on Monmouth Street, at 7 p.m. and charged with receiving stolen property and multiple drug counts including possession of heroin with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, reports said.

Garcia, of Montgomery Street, was charged with conspiracy to commit a drug offense, and both Figueroa, of Fourth Street, and Turner, of Wayne Street, were charged with wandering to commit a drug offense, reports said.

A stolen laptop computer found in the back seat was returned to its 53-year-old Bright Street owner, reports said, adding that it stolen from his BMW on Feb. 8 while parked at the A&P on 18th Street in Jersey City.

The vehicle had fictitious license plates and it was impounded, reports said, adding that relevant summons would be issued to Romero.

"Police have been targeting the area and making multiple arrests pertaining to narcotics and the department will not stop until the drug dealers are cleared out," Police Director Sam Jefferson said.

The cops were INSISTENT that the man wasn't drunk, and their attitude was a way of telling me not to push the issue.

Why would JC's cops ALLOW for a drunk driver to get back into the truck and go home?

My only guess is that it was the end of their shift and they didn't want the extra work...

One of my friends got into an accident in the Heights and asked the police to use a breathalyzer on the other driver. The cop refused, I am sure the fact the other man was a retired cop had a lot to do with why the officer refused. The officer's response was "he doesnt look drunk to me."

I thought the shooting was targeting the drug dealers too. That corner is probably one of the most notorious drug corners in Jersey City. They even have there own gang on that corner called Lex Mob that has been operating for over a decade.

Two gunmen send bullets into Greenville store, facade
Friday, February 13, 2009

A man armed with a shotgun and another with a handgun shot up a Greenville store and building Wednesday afternoon, Jersey City police officials said.

Responding to a call of shots being fired at 3:23 p.m., officers found four spent shells from a semiautomatic handgun and one spent shotgun shell at Oxford and Bergen avenues, police said.

Walking west on Oxford, the men opened fire when they reached Bergen, leaving two bullet holes in the windows of a liquor store and one in a building's facade, police said.

No arrests have been made and no motive for the gunfire has been established, police said.

MICHAELANGELO CONTE

I kept the story the same but this area isnt Greenville it is Bergen Lafayette, and there is no store on that corner so I am guessing they mean the store on Bergen and Lexington one block over.

Shot kills young dad

Another young Jersey City man had his life cut short this week, dying from a gunshot wound to the chest late Tuesday night, officials said.

Justin McNeil, 21, of Wilkinson Avenue in Jersey City, was shot dead on the sidewalk on Ocean Avenue and Bayview Avenue in Jersey City, said First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory.

The autopsy report showed that McNeil, known to his friends as "Ice," died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, said Gregory, whose office was notified of the shooting at 11:44 p.m.

No motive has been established for the shooting, officials said.

More than 20 people gathered in near silence at the FIP Mini Market on Ocean Avenue where McNeil would frequently hang out. A shrine with flowers and candles was set up about two blocks away on the sidewalk where he was shot.

Many friends declined to comment yesterday. Those who did speak described McNeil as a "good father" to his one-year-old baby girl, a "good guy," "the sweetest kid" who looked after his little brother and preferred to walk away from trouble.

"If you needed money he would give it to you," said one person. "If you needed a ride he gave it to you. He had a big heart."

Last May, Jason Sharpe, 24, also of Wilkinson Avenue, died a block away after being stabbed in the heart and lung at Ocean Avenue and Wegman Parkway.

"It's terrible here and it's got worse," said Martha Williams, a resident of Bayview Avenue, talking about the violence in her neighborhood.

So far this year, four people have been murdered in Hudson County and a baby died from aggravated manslaughter, officials said.

Thieves get away with grocery's ATM - almost
Thursday, February 12, 2009

A couple of absent-minded thieves almost got away with stealing an ATM from a Jersey City grocery store early yesterday morning, reports said.

But the caper - and the cash machine - collapsed when they forgot to unhook the ATM from an extension cord, reports said.

Responding to a report of a robbery at Garfield and Gates avenues at 1 a.m., police found the ATM in the middle of Gates Avenue and the roll-down security gates of a grocery store up, reports said.

A witness said that two thieves placed the ATM into the rear of a Jeep, but apparently forgot to roll up the extension cord that was attached to the machine, reports said.

When the thieves tried to make a quick getaway, the cord got stuck in the front door of the store and the machine crashed onto the pavement, report said.

No money was missing from the ATM and the store's cash register appeared untouched, reports said.

To enter the store, the burglars cut a padlock and smashed a window, police said.

Home search riles shot girl's mother
Thursday, February 12, 2009
By RON ZEITLINGER
DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR

A Jersey City woman whose daughter was shot in the face is outraged after returning from the hospital yesterday morning to find her Van Horne Street home had been searched and ransacked by Jersey City police.

"I was at the hospital all night and I came home to wash up and I found my house was turned upside down by the police," said Annie McCord, whose 16-year-old daughter underwent surgery to wire her jaw shut yesterday at the Jersey City Medical Center. "This isn't right!"

Even more outrageous, McCord said, is that the cops were looking for the gun that was used to shoot her daughter.

"The cops left a note that someone on the block said there was a gun in the house," said McCord, trying to fight back tears.

"They didn't find any gun here. They think my (19-year-old) son had something to do with the gun that shot my daughter, but that's crazy."

Last night, McCord spoke at a meeting of the Jersey City City Council about the incident.

Police spokesman Stan Eason confirmed that the police executed a search warrant at the home, but refused to elaborate because of the ongoing investigation. Eason also said it is police policy to lock and secure all doors after executing a search warrant at a home. He also noted that cops were on patrol in the area when the girl was shot.

McCord's daughter, who attends Lincoln High School, was shot Monday afternoon near the intersection of Communipaw Avenue and Van Horne Street. McCord said her daughter had been walking home after a dance class at school and that she was not the intended target. No arrests have been made.

McCord said she found her front door open and furniture and household items strewn about the apartment when she returned from the hospital at 6 a.m.

"I'm a victim, I'm a mother whose daughter was shot," McCord said. "And I come home and find my house turned upside down by the cops."

Armed robbers make getaway along light rail tracks in Downtown Jersey City this morning
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Wednesday February 11, 2009, 5:07 PM
A New York City man was robbed at gunpoint in Downtown Jersey City early this morning and the thieves made their escape by running away along the light rail tracks, officials said.

Officers dispatched to Hudson and Essex streets at 12:03 a.m. met the 25-year-old man who told them two men approached him, one of whom had what looked like a black revolver, reports said.

He said, "Give my ya money and ya phone and I'll kill ya if ya don't' give me the cash," reports said.

The victim gave the duo $50 from his wallet and handed over his $400 cell phone before the pair took off running east on Essex Street, reports said.

One officer boarded a light rail train as soon as he arrived at the scene and road to the Liberty State Park station but didn't see the thieves, reports said.

Police later found three males fitting the description of the robbers but the victim said themen who robbed him weren't among them, reports said.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Jersey City Police Department tipline at (201) 547-JAIL.

Hmmmm....now I need to figure out which type of line it is and call the appropriate service provider.

Dont worry the shoes on the power lines has nothing to do with drug dealing. It is just something kids and teens do for fun with there old pair of sneakers when they get a new pair. The sneakers representing drug spots is more an urban myth then true. There were a couple places at one time that used that for a short time but it was probably less then .001% of the sneakers that represented drug corners even then. Like most urban myths it is based on a small amount of truth that as word spreads people become more worried then they need to be. Think of it more like the spray painted strike boxes the kids put up, it is only a sign there are bored kids in the area.

My opinion would be to move to the Fisk Park area that area is getting better year by year. It is closer to the light rail and of all the areas it seems to be improoving the fastest. The Washington Park area has more crime, outdoor drug dealing, and roaming crack heads then the other two sections you picked. The only down side to the resivoir area is how far it is from the light rail other then that it is fine.

I wonder why the Jersey Journal always reports the maximum sentence they can receive when most criminals dont get the max in this county. They should say the minimum sentence too, so people get a better idiea of what the sentence might be. I believe to get parole he would have to finish 85% of his sentence (could be wrong) so if he did get the max he would be out in 17 years (really 16 because he has been in jail a year). If you ever seen the charges and sentences of criminals on the njdoc website for similar crimes they usually get 5 to 10 year sentences. So unless they make an example of him wouldnt suprise me if he was out on parole in the next 3 to 8 1/2 years. Hopefully the fact that there was a witness will help make the sentence longer.

Seek suspect,16, in gun death
Monday, February 02, 2009

By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Bayonne man was shot dead in Jersey City Friday night and police are negotiating with the family of the suspected 16-year-old trigger man to turn himself in.

"We believe it was one individual who fired the gun," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. "We have been in contact with his family and they have told us that they will try to have him come in voluntarily, but we are in fact still looking for him."

Nigel Gore, 21, of West 55th Street in Bayonne, was fatally shot and the 20-year-old Jersey City man he was with was injured on Rutgers Avenue near Sheffield Street at 9:12 p.m., DeFazio said.

Investigators believe the men were walking along the street when two attackers - one of them possibly masked - walked toward them, and one of them fired a revolver multiple times, hitting the men and damaging a nearby car, DeFazio said.

An autopsy conducted by the state Regional Medical Examiners Office, shows that Gore was shot in the area of his hip, but the bullet traveled deeper into his body causing fatal internal injuries, DeFazio said.

While motive has not been established, investigators have ruled out robbery or random shooting and believe the murder was premeditated, DeFazio said.

The man with Gore was treated and released from the Jersey City Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, he said.

The Star-Ledger contributed to this story.

Does anybody else ever notice how often criminals have drugs "fall" out there pockets or admit to having it on them in Bayonne? Not saying it might not have actually happened here but when I was a teen Bayonne police were always known to profile and perform illegal searches. Sometimes they get lucky but you would be surprised how many innocent people get harrassed and searched for no good reason. When I was a teen they did this to me when I visited that town.

Don't you think they watch and see how often cops drive or walk by a particular nieghborhood. They aren't stupid.Creating a greater presence by putting more guys on foot is not the only answer, don't you think that at some point criminals are going to figure out that there are less radio cars on the street and figure out that all they have to do to get away is commit the crime using a car. What is the walking cop to do then if there are less police cars on the street and he has to run to the call. You certainly can't hire enough cops to put one on each block because your taxes will be so high that what it would cost you in property tax you could have bought ten houses.

The criminals aren't buying guns legally, and they aren't buying guns from legal owners either. I think the state needs to come up with stricter gun laws in reguards to people who commit crimes with guns must get a longer sentence, do away with the plea bargaining for crimes commited with guns. Mkae sentences longer and harder. Make it more difficult for them to get out of jail. Forget about how they were the model inmate and releasing them on good behavior ealy. Make them do the full sentence, so maybe when they get out someof them wil be too old to commit more crimes. Stop with the halfway houses, guess they aren't working because career criminals are still commiting new crimes. I must say I am all for the death penalty, why do we have guys sitting in jail with five and six life sentences or on death row for twenty years.

Even though I dont like our local Jersey City goverment most of what you want isnt possible with out the state or federal government stepping in. The illegal gun trade in this area is so profitable because we are so strict on legal gun ownership. Your right though the penalty for illegal gun possesion should go up even more so when used in a crime. It is hard to do away with the plea bargaining since they are mostly used for a few reasons, lack of evidence to convict, save money/resources on a trial and to move them through the system faster so they can move on to the next criminals. Most of the reason we have these violent criminals released so fast is over crowding and the war on drugs. If we didnt focus so much on the nonviolent drug offenders and more on the violence we would be able to give tougher sentences to the murders, rapist and stick up kids. I do think some of what you said should be done but I disagree with the death penalty.

Shooting leads to arrest in year-old crime

A sixth man has been arrested in the murder of a Jersey City woman killed while coming to the aid of her son who was targeted by Bloods street gang members because he helped a neighbor being assaulted by gangsters, officials said.

Noel Salgado, 28, was indicted on Nov. 12 on the charges of murder, conspiracy and possession of a firearm by a felon, in connection with the Jan. 27, 2008, killing of Demaris Colon, 39, in front of her Monitor Street home, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday.

"It's all the more tragic because an innocent victim was killed as a result of this gunfire," DeFazio said yesterday. "These are the unintended results of indiscriminate gunfire."

Although Salgado was indicted in November, he wasn't found until Sunday when police arrested him in connection with the investigation into the shooting of a 23-year-old Jersey City woman who was wounded in the temple last week, DeFazio said.

Salgado was also wanted for failing to register as a sex offender, officials said.

Already arrested in connection with Colon's 2008 murder are Matthew Lee, 21, of Harrison Street in Hoboken, along with Bayonne residents Luis Ortiz, 21, and Thomas Bellotti, 28, and Jersey City residents Bernardo Montenez, 30, and Douglas Johnson, 25. All are suspected members of the Bloods street gang, DeFazio said.

DeFazio said Salgado was not at the scene of the shooting "but was part of the gang conspiracy that led to the attack."

Homicide detectives believe the four men drove to Colon's home intending to shoot her 19-year-old son in retribution for him intervening on behalf of the neighbor, officials said.

But Johnson, the alleged gunman, hit Colon when he fired three shots during a struggle with her son, DeFazio said. She died the next day at the Jersey City Medical Center.

Jersey City police investigating the shooting of the woman at a boarding house at Baldwin Avenue and Academy Street on Jan. 15, arrested Salgado and Kyliah Grant, 18, of Arlington Avenue, on the charge of conspiracy to tamper with a witness.

A 17-year-old Jersey City boy who is a reputed Bloods member has been charged with aggravated assault in the boarding house shooting, police said.

Police developed information that the shooter had been asking about the victim and might try to visit her at the Medical Center, police said. Detectives staked out the hospital and arrested Salgado, Grant and the boy there Sunday, police said.

Salgado is being held without bail on the Megan's Law violation, DeFazio said. He is expected to make his first appearance in court on the murder charge today or tomorrow, DeFazio said.

Salgado was in prison from March 18, 1997 to Oct. 27, 2005 on two convictions for aggravated assault, a weapons offense and one count of drug possession, corrections officials said.

Could the infusion of upper middle class into JC be behind the crime drops?

I think it has some affect but not as much as you think. When many of the Downtown residents that were priced out during the gentrification of there neighborhood the majority moved to the Heights. Most of the families were good and hard working but the criminals and gang members moved up there as well. I think that is a part of the reason crime went up in the Heights over the years. Downtown became safer by pricing out the people that lived there while the Heights became more dangerous as most of them moved up there to more affordable housing. This city is just moving all the poor and middle class in the same neighborhoods instead of trying to keep them balanced. Most of the crime statistic decline is a national decline and has little to do with the upper middle class moving here. The violence hasnt had as much of a decline though and there are more gangs now then the 90s had.
