I hope that you find someone local to do the work - a Jersey City resident. You did say it's a small job.

JERSEY CITY ? Current government workers, ex-politicians, and regular Jersey City residents have been lobbying for jobs ever since Mayor Steve Fulop got elected.

Most people are doing their lobbying quietly behind the scenes. But at least one lobbying effort has gone very public.

Last week, Jersey City artist and Creative Grove founder Uta Brauser circulated an e-mail that contained a link to an online petition that asks Mayor Fulop to make her an ?ambassador of art and culture.? Brauser, who recently closed her Fish with Braids art gallery because the building in which it was housed is being redeveloped for residential housing, is said to be interested in a senior post with the city?s Department of Cultural Affairs.

?My friend started a petition for me in regards to a city appointment in the sector of art and culture with [the] new administration,? Brauser wrote to friends and associates on July 3. ?This is the link: http://www.change.org/petitions/mayor ... ador-of-art-and-culture.?

The succinct petition notes Brauser?s ?vision and strategic outreach in the community, and her activities need to get incorporated into city policies. Jersey City is in need of improvements, in particular within the sectors of culture and economic development. The cultural scene reflects economy in as much as it attracts business. It would be wonderful if our new mayor could bestow an official capacity onto Ms. Brauser so that she may continue to create and expand the work she has begun.?

The petition continues with ?Mayor Steven Fulop: We ask to appoint Uta Brauser as the ambassador of art and culture.?

At present, no such position as ?ambassador? exists within the Division of Cultural Affairs. It is unclear whether the petition is an attempt to get Fulop to create such a position or is an attempt to get him to hire Brauser as the director of Cultural Affairs, a position that does exist.

The current director of Cultural Affairs is Maryanne Kelleher.

Brauser is a longtime Fulop supporter. Kelleher was allied with former Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, but has said in that past that she has a good working relationship with Fulop. Kelleher was among the key staff who helped organize Fulop?s July 1 inauguration.

As of Monday morning, the online petition had 45 signatures. Fifty-five additional supporters were still needed. ? E. Assata Wright

New Jersey. New Jersey expressly conditions receipt of a pension on the rendering of honorable service. It provides that state and local pension boards may order an employee or officer to forfeit all or part of his pension for misconduct that occurred during his public service that renders the service dishonorable. It specifies the factors that the retirement board must consider in making its decision, which include the nature of the misconduct and the member's length of service (N.J. Rev. Stat. 43:1-3). We found no cases challenging this law on constitutional grounds.

Before New Jersey adopted this law, its Supreme Court had approved reductions in pension benefits for state and municipal employees who had engaged in criminal activities on the job, since pensions were by law granted for ?honorable? service (Uricoli v. Board of Trustees, Police and Firemen's Retirement System, 449 A 2d. 1267 (N.J. 1982)).

That's not how it works. He can keep the pension earned up to the incident, unless his service prior to the incident was not "honorable." He earned his pension under the law and it can't be taken away.

While he credits Cunningham for his start in politics. Fulop basically made it on his own. Fulop created the careers of five of the seven who won on his slate. The other two started out on their own. If you are going to create the political careers of someone, then their actions do reflect on the mayor.

So the Fulop backed candidates should be at his beck and call since he gave them the start in politics? Fulop selected independent minded people. I doubt he is expecting them to be rubber stampers. Watterman has to make her own decision. Should applicants be excluded from consideration based solely on their DNA? I don't think this is necessarily fair. I do hope that Ms. Watterman finds an aid other than her daughter or close relative. But either way I'll still support her.

See the fine print - Provident:

An interest rate of 1.50% with an Annual Percentage Yield (APY) of 1.51% will be paid only for that portion of your daily balance that is $15,000 or less. An interest rate of 0.50% with an APY ranging from 1.11% to 1.51% will be paid only for that portion of your daily balance that is more than $15,000, but less than or equal to $25,000. An interest rate of 0.15% with an APY ranging from 0.15% to 1.11% will be paid only for that portion of your daily balance that is greater than $25,000. The interest rates and APYs will be paid provided that the Provident $MART Checking qualification requirements are met in the corresponding statement period. If you do not meet the qualification requirements for a statement period, your account will still function as a free checking account earning 0.05% APY; however, it will not receive ATM fee refunds for that statement period. APY is in effect as of 12/1/12. APYs are variable and may change at any time after the account is opened. No minimum account balance required, however, you must deposit a minimum of $50 to open this account. Withdrawal/transfer restrictions apply; ask for details or see account disclosure. Available to consumer/personal account holders only. No monthly service charges. 2All nationwide ATM fees will be refunded provided qualification requirements are met. All qualifying transactions must post and clear your account within one (1) statement period. Account holder/owner must sign up for and maintain a free ProvidentConnect online banking relationship. Online opening for this account is for New Jersey residents only.3You must conduct at least ten (10) signature-based POS purchases which post and clear your account within one (1) statement period. You must receive at least one (1) ACH direct deposit or process at least one (1) automatic debit which posts and clears your account within one (1) statement period.

The big catch, other than the stated limitations - all conditions must be met...or else it's just a "free checking account earning 0.05% APY" -

Ally doesn't play games.
The conditions aren't fine print, I posted about them at the beginning, and they are marked off in bold on the site I linked to. And so the interest changes after $15k, why is that a problem? It's still much higher than what Ally offers.

Say you have $25k in the bank.
(1.51% x $15k) + (.5% x $10k) = $276.50
(.4% x $15k) + (.75% x $10k) = $135

You get twice as much money with Provident, provided you meet the conditions each month. Even if you miss one or two months, it's still more money.

I don't understand what you're getting at here. I just thought I'd post about the bank I'm using and their program, and you keep trying to find something wrong with what I'm saying.

With Ally the current rate is .84% for the savings. About the best considered there's no minimums and no strings attached (see bankrate.com - MMA). It's best to get that linked to a checking account. If the checking account goes over, money is automatically transferred from savings in $100 increments with no fees/charges. So the (.4% x $15k) + (.75% x $10k) is not really relevant. You provided some useful info about Provident, and for some people it may be the best choice. At least we gave folks a few solid options to consider.

Hi,

I am starting a part-time job to save up for a new car or go on a vacation.

I would like to start a new account. Any recommendations? My current bank(a local community one is not so great).

I would probably setup a direct deposit for it. Any features like cash back, rewards.....with no fees would be bonus. Look forward to your input.

And yes i have looked around and done some research....but would like to hear from people who already have accounts.
Provident Bank has a program called Smart Checking. It offers interest (around 2% right now I think?) which is better than most savings accounts. It also gives ATM fee refunds. The requirements are:
-Direct Deposit or auto-payment once per month
-Online statements instead of mailed ones
-Use your debit card as a credit card 10 times per month (not that difficult to do).

Plus it's a small local bank, so you can avoid the bloodsuckers at Chase and friends.

2% interest? Are you tripping? Again, check out Ally Bank. Use nearly any bank's ATM and get 100% reimbursed for the fee. Interest about the highest of any bank but more importantly stays high. Deposit checks with smartphone/iPhone. The list goes on and on. Ally is about the best.

Google "unsafe operation." For the privilege of paying around $400 (+ the ticket and court fees) you can plead to that lesser offense.

Check with your insurance company. Even after they reduce the ticket, you still may pay an auto insurance surcharge. What you won't get is state points on your license.

That's an absurd level of blind faith to put in a person, especially in this city. Replace "Education" with "Sobriety" or "Ethics" and you can describe any loser we've had running this place in the last hundred years.

The fact is, the voters in Ward B knew that Chico didn't have a college education, and still voted him in. Now at the top of the 9th he's being called out for his high school record! The voters have made their decision, and it will be final after the polls close tonight. They'll get what they asked for, good or bad.

I'm not going to defend Nidia and I don't vote in Ward C. But why would anyone in their right mind participate in a debate hosted by an organizer - Yvonne - that has already come out publicly in favor of the opposition? It is unfortunate that an unbiased organization didn't host the debate. If you watch the council meetings on cable or in person, you'll see that Yvonne can be ill prepared, uninformed, and incorrect most of the time in her assumptions. Even though she is a discombobulated mess, I give her credit for at least trying. But she has no business hosting a debate.

Yes, because abatements are a major reason why developers don't develop in those areas. Abatements are why developments like crystal point and 77 hudson are not in greenville rofl. Not lack of transportation to the city, not the median income of those living in those areas, not the homocide and armed robbery rates, not the gangs, not the horrible schools AND lack of any good private schools, and not the fear of getting shot in the face. It's abatements.

Please take away all abatements from downtown area and watch as the toll brothers will flock to greenville. There will be a 77 hudson 2 and crystal point: greenville edition.

you people should make a comedy show.

let's be honest. it's the "if I can't have it, then no one else can mentality." In your heart of hearts, you know without MAJOR changes and transportation connections to areas like greenville, there will never be the kind of development that downtown has experienced so if you can't have it, you don't want downtown to have it either. Just come out and say it...I know you want to

The problem with the abatement deals downtown is that too much was left on the table in favor of the developers. This will change starting in July.
