When I lived there (just left 6+ months ago), they were having consistent problems with their overall fire alarm system, which automatically triggers the FD to come. It sucks even more when you live there. Ugh.

Rich, I can appreciate that you want to promote yourself. But can you please do more here than re-post articles and just say "Vote for Rich" or "Please donate to my campaign/come to my fundraiser"? Can you please talk to us about what you plan to do to improve Ward C...real, actionable items?

Why should we vote for you?

Thanks.

That's kind of funny about Fulop not getting to people beyond Ward E. He's been working in all the other Wards for years now, and the Mayoral HQ is on the Ward B/A border. In fact, just last week and today he has been at JSQ PATH canvassing and talking to people (though he's been doing way more than just this). But he's consistently visible. Where's Team Healy, or Healy himself, for that matter?

Yep, I agree. I was paying 14k in taxes living down there, I sold and got the fuk out. It was not worth it anymore. I now pay 4k in taxes with a 2 extra bedrooms and have the same 99 cents stores on Ocean as I did on Newark ave, and my commute is now 33 min door to door to my work oppose to 19 min, but I can live with it.

Plus, not to mention the nightmare crowded-ness of the Grove St. PATH station with all this new development. We've all been saying since post-9/11, when the closure of Exchange Place forced thousands to use Grove St. station and we experienced commuting like sardines, that the projected amount of new residences on the building project slate would be a transportation nightmare if the PATH didn't expand along side all these new buildings popping up. Yet, nothing has improved there.

I love how some of the newer people - who knew the sort of retail we have downtown BEFORE they CHOSE to move here - now think they are entitled to say all those places should leave. WOW. How about you GTFO with your nasty, entitled attitude?

Do I think there is room for growth of different types of new businesses? Absolutely. Do I think one should expect things to suddenly "gentrify" or "gentrify more" simply because they move in and pay a high rent? Hellz no. You knew what you were signing up for when you signed your lease/mortgage. If this place wasn't up to snuff for you already, why move here and poison it with your bad attitude?

My comment about what I think rents should be (and of course I know its market driven, but I can dream) was gotten by some folks - it has to do with the relation to amenities in the neighborhood. One person said it perfectly. DTJC doesn't have the upscale amenities to merit the steep rent increases. Big reason I left DTJC after 15 years for other parts of JC. The cost didn't merit it any longer.

Moving to JC is probably a pragmatic decision for a lot of people which means these people are also mature enough, laid back enough, and unpretentious enough to move to the "wrong side of the Hudson".

I also think the fact that JC is a bit more affordable means that it's less vulnerable to the very upper middle class white person insanity that has become an issue in places like Park Slope. Here the SUV stroller set has to coexist with so many other demographics - it keeps the vibe varied. You also aren't going to see trust fund college kids "slumming it" in Jersey.

Basically I want JC to continue being perceived as "scary" or really hard to get to by the type of people who see NYC as a luxury playground/shopping mall, because it keeps it cheaper and interesting. People are talking about JC's lack of national reputation like that is a bad thing. Sleeper towns are usually the best balance of everything; once a place is having it's "moment" that's the death rattle.

I agree with you, on most of this. However, DT is getting way over-priced and some of the recent transplants are bringing their NYC MTA rudeness to their PATH train etiquette, which blows. I do recall a time when people actually waiting for those on the train to all exit before pushing their way in. And rents are getting out of control.

Agreed, IMO I don't think anywhere in JC is worth anything over 2k a month. Anything outside of NYC charging that much should be low in crime and clean.

And I'll go even further to say that a 2 bd. should not be more than $1500-$1700 anywhere in JC, unless its over 1300-1500 sq. ft. in in a luxury building.

I dont know anything about you or your politics. As a jc resident my entire life, I do see your point about having a unified city.

If you were from jc, you would realize that jc has always been a unified place. The different neighborhoods could always relate to each other because one thingunified us, jc...exit 15e . Etc.

Th downtown began to change, a different type of person began to show up. There is nothing wrong with different, but early newporters wanted to have their own zip codes, their own police, even to secede from jc. It was ridiculous.

Fast forward to today, we are in the midst of an election tht is very important to our city's future. One side is the current mayor, winner of two previous elections and champion of joey jersey city. He brings 8 years of experience as mayor to the table. He brings documented information, crime stats, jobs, etc with him. Many fulop people may dispute the numbers, but thats for the voters to decide.

The fulop slate, in my opinion, is full of people who frown on jc for what it has been over decades and want to change it for their own benefit. Besides a turkey giveaway, or toy drive, when and where has the fulop ticket been in terms of wards a, b, c, d, and f. IMO, the divide comes in because the average person on the city feels this is an election about class, as opposed to who the better candidate is. Ifbyou speak to the average person on kennedy blvd, or westside ave, all they know is that healy is running against the guy from downtown.

Is it ignorant, sure, is it misinfomed, sure, but it is what it is. The divide is not coming from the healy camp, they are defending the rest of the city from the corporate takeover of jersey city.

If the situation w dr lyles and chris cerf is any indicator, fulop is nothing more than a wolf in sheeps clothing. He is doing the same thing he is preaching against. Look at fairview insurance.

This makes little sense as its been Mayor Healy and his prior cronies who have been giving the city away to corporate developers for years (all those new buildings? shoving low/moderate income housing to areas where those corporations didn't have to "see" those residents? Maintaining "pay for play" culture? The list goes on and on). Take a closer look at the Fulop ticket - at all the folks running for council - you won't see a ticket of candidates that diverse (in ideas, ethnicity, income statuses, and duration of time in JC).

If you disagree with Fulop & co's. views/policies, that's one thing. But they have not been the ones to sell this town out and focus on making only certain areas prosperous (Ward E). Where's the new condo towers, street paving, etc. in the other wards? Missing because Healy didn't help development in those areas.

Re: Local Veterinarian

Another happy customer here for JC Animal Clinic/Westside. Dr. Gaylord is fantastic - he's been treating my 15 y/o kitty who's illin. He is thorough but very practical about working out a logical sequence of tests and treatments that work for me financially, and for my pet's health. We're doing a sequence of steps/treatments/tests to try to figure out the cause of her problems (so far we've found hyper-thyroid issues).

Helpful hint about medicine for pets in general: Turns out I will have to medicate my kitty for the thyroid problem for the rest of her life. The 3 month pill supply was around $82 at this vet which I bought as I needed it right away . I've since found it online at sites like 1-800-PetMeds for about half that. In the future, I'll be ordering them from the online site.

I just spoke to the Mayor's action bureau regarding multiple lamp outages on Bergen Ave. between Montogmery & Communipaw. These are those newly installed double headed streetlights that look "old-fashioned" in style. I was informed that PSEG does not handle these style of lamps, but rather the city does. So if you have any outages with these newer "old fashioned" ones, call the Mayor's Action Bureau to report these for repair.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. I just moved up here 6 months ago after over 15 years downtown myself. This started mostly because I was looking for local classes to take up here, and came up with nothing. I know some yoga teachers who work downtown and a few have said they'd potentially be interested in starting classes up in our area once I told them about the lack of yoga.

There is a space we can potentially utilize on Bergen ave., about 4 blocks south of JSQ path (same block as Bally's) - a large carpeted room next to a new therapeutic massage practice the my neighbor has opened. Not a posh yoga studio, but its clean and functional and good sized. And location is pretty central to both JSQ & McGinley area. If things go well, we could make this a permanent yoga studio down the road. I have work to do still with the teachers in mind to determine the feasibility, levels offered, etc.

I really appreciate the feedback here. For those who asked, yes - we are doing other research on competition, level of interest, etc. As I am new up here, any input is helpful. Does anyone know of any community or artists groups up here I could reach out to to poll interest? I tried the Uptown Crew FB page, but no reply - seems a bit dormant.

Thanks everyone!

As far as I can find, there is no place offering drop in yoga classes, beyond one class a week that Super Impact offers.

The website isn't live. Has anyone been to this place? If they aren't even listed live anywhere, how do we know they still are open?

Besides, there's plenty of room up here for more studios. Look at the plethora of them downtown.

I'm working with some folks on opening a new yoga studio here in the JSQ/McGinely Sq. area. It would be drop in classes, all levels. We would offer packages too.

Would folks up here be interested in this sort of thing? What sort of classes/times would interest you?

Thanks STC, Getz & Greenville Chick! Getz - do you commute to/from the city? How do you get there? How is getting home late at night (like after 11)? My BF works late nights, and gets home around 11-12.

I loved that place on the corner of Van Horne & Lafayette, overlooking the park.

Does anyone know anything about the time frame for the opening of Whitlock Mills?

Re: Bergen Lafayette?

Home away from home

I read through this whole thread and its very helpful as I am considering moving to the Lafayette area near LSP or Lafayette park later this year. I looked at an incredible fully renovated building on Van Horne, at the corner of Lafayette, across from the church. Went walking around this past Sunday afternoon as well. It was really quiet and the few neighbors we saw were all very friendly and shared their experiences (all positive - 1 couple were 6 mos. new residents from NC, and one lady was a 30 yr. resident who had seen it all).

It looked really pleasant for our taste (we're in our 40's, have a basic car, don't go out too much at night, work in the city, no kids). So what is the latest on this area, both north of Pacific and south of Pacific? We're looking to rent a 2bd. for $1500 or less and plan to move in late fall, probably. The new Lafayette park seems lovely. Am I also correct in assuming/hoping that living by a large church and a grade school is a good area to be?

Note: I am a 15 yr. resident of DTJC in the Varick/Wayne st. area so I don't mind being a bit of an urban pioneer. But I do want to feel safe walking at night (not 2am, but evening), and street parking my car.

Re: 'Jersey Shore' Spin-Off in Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

Quote:
Filming will take place from Feb 21 - March 9 (3 weeks). This information was taken from notices that were posted on residences all along Mercer between Grove and Barrow.

Secondly, I keep seeing comments on what this show is about. The plot is a "Laverne & Shirley" ripoff about Snooki and JWOWW living in JC and trying to find jobs and love. Here's an excerpt from JCI:

"Another manager said he thought the MTV producers seemed disingenuous. He said that when the producers first scouted the restaurant?s location, he asked specifically if it would be for the Jersey Shore spin-off, but was told no, it would just be a Laverne and Shirley type reality show, which is basically the description that MTV has been touting for the spin-off. Other bar managers and owners said that the contract seemed intrusive in other ways ? that they wouldn?t get paid enough and that MTV would have free rein over their establishments."

Hope that clears things up.

No, it proves MTV has been lying to business owners like this one. If the business owner asked them straight up if the filming in question was for the Jersey Show spinoff show, the truthful answer is "Yes, it is, but the style of this show is more Laverne & Shirley like." Then it would be clear and the business person knows it involves the 2 women in question and base their decision on that plus the new angle they claim they are putting on this show.

But instead MTV said 'no, it would just be a Laverne and Shirley type reality show, which is basically the description that MTV has been touting for the spin-off. ' So they have been misleading all the businesses they talk to when asked point blank if this is the Snooki/Jwoww JS spinoff show. That is incredibly disingenuous and makes this seem even shadier.

How can any of you trust that this show will do anything positive, given how they already trying to con the good businesses and people of JC?
