Any ideas why the Secret Service would be involved in something like this?

Beats the Guardian Angels, that's for sure.

Sing it, sister!

To continue to do such great work with people constantly b*tching and to remain levelheaded and optimistic in spite of it all -- and not got paid for it -- is to be Parkman. Yay!!!

$20K gone. Poof. Just like that. Morons. Or Perverts, depending on how you look at it (no pun).

Here's the only logical answer: HEALY CAN'T READ.

But boy, can he drink. And lay around naked. And ignore all civic duties, not to mention moral responsibility and plain old common sense and politeness!

He is a total embarrassment to this city. And kind of a jerk to boot.

LostGirl: your Healy e-mail rocks.

I highly recommend that you keep trying with the news producers, and for others who have been crime victims and witnesses, you should reach out too. If you've got the stomach for it, just bombard them over and over again. I work in PR and it's not uncommon to have to keep trying (and trust me, I am pitching much less newsworthy things than this). I'll start making some calls and sending e-mails too.

The more they hear about what is going on, the more likely they are to come over and investigate it for themselves. And they will start asking the questions we've been asking for a while now, but this time on television.

The thread is called "Local Television Contacts" -- don't know how to create the fancy link like other people do.

This is absolutely insane. And totally right for television. Call Channel 5 and talk to Arnie Diaz. We need to start alerting the tri-state area to the completely ridiculous situation.

I'm going to pull together a press list that people can use so we can bombard the press. (I know I've said this before but the summer got in the way and now I am super pissed.)

PM me if you are interested in getting a copy of it. I promise to have it to any/all interested parties by this Friday. I may even post the names and numbers of local TV producers in another post if you think it will help.

Thanks for the signs, BrightMoment! Too bad no one makes decals anymore. If I was craftier with my printer I suppose I could whip out a batch but I'll save that for a rainy day (well, like tomorrow, supposed to pour I think).

In the meantime, I'm printing some out now and will distribute them at our next condo meeting too.

Thanks for the posting, BrightMoment. Where can we pick up the "We Watch" sign for our apartment and maybe even the car?

Would be great if it was something that could be downloaded or e-mailed out -- I would love to send it to a bunch of friends to use as well. The more of those signs we get out there, the better the impact.

Hey watch it, Aussie. Unfair! You've earned all of our good graces with your down-underness and normally on target comments (to me at least) but that was a cheap shot.

Happens all over the world -- people make a dollar off a tragedy. There is an entire culture thriving off Princess Diana, for crying out loud. Okay, not entirely the same, but you get the point. Sucks, I agree, but it's not limited to the USA.

I can't comment on the real topic at hand here because it makes me really annoyed/aggravated/sad but I had to check you on the America dig.

Feeling very patriotic tonight...gotta go watch some BBC or something now...

Re: New face of public housing - 72 homes in the Lafayette section of Jersey City

Home away from home

Lostgirl: Good for you. For real. No sarcasm intended. It took me a decade longer than you to get my act together financially (or close enough) and finally buy a place, so rock on.

Maybe there were certain learnings from your own childhood that you could teach to some of the lost girls around JC. How to develop self-esteem and determination to succeed in spite of challenges, without relying on monetary hand-outs. The Boys and Girls Club could use your help, as could some of the other local kids groups. It's something I keep meaning to do and the insanity of this whole thread is really pushing me to finally get off my ass and do it.

Please don't take this as sarcastic, because I am serious.

We bang back and forth with all of these really strong attitudes and opinions but the fact remains that there are thousands of young kids in this city who have no idea what they are up against and cannnot possibly be held responsible for who is paying for their house, their medical care, their education. They are just young kids with a whole future ahead of them and they sure as hell could use some guidance.

I'm jumping in late to this convo but it reminds me of what my mother used to say while I was going through my grunge phase: "It takes as much time to dress nicely as it does to dress unnicely."

In other words, if low income housing is going to be built to look like "private homes," is that really so awful? Is making a building look like a prison any cheaper?

Whether we agree on the subsidy or not is another matter entirely, but if we are going to build these homes, we may as well make them relatively attractive. Since when does being poor mean that you need to live in an ugly environment? Why should DeQuan have to grow up in a shithole?

As for the race thing, it's irrelevant and the jokes about baby daddy's and names are just kind of silly. This city was built by poor immigrants most of whom were white, by the way. And a lot of them were mobbed up -- my family included (I type with a sick sense of Irish and Ukranian pride).

Last but not least, for those of you have decided that every low-income person in this city is a mugger and out to get you, watch your backs. Karma is a bitch.

Sleep tight in your smug little beds tonight, folks.

(PS: clearly one of the pissiest posts I've ever written but some of you just KILL me.)

Re: 60 arrested in Jersey City and other cities up and down New Jersey in effort to break "Bloods' Gang"

So all should be quiet in HP now, right? (bad joke, I know).

This is actually totally scary and creepy and just underscores that for all of our community-building, particularly downtown, JC is the second largest city in the state and there are a lot of pros and cons with that. I know that every little bit we do to improve things counts and I still hope/pray that our own local crime rate resolves itself, but it will definitely take time.

In the meantime, I was in Asbury Park last weekend and while everyone was bonging on about redevelopment and gentrification (regentrification? i always get confused), all I could think about was how downtown JC is like Paris in comparison.

But I will admit that after a few drinks at a cute little bar in the "trendy" part of Asbury Park, I did consider checking out some seaside real estate...

Re: **CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS IN JERSEY CITY ***

I used to live in Liberty Towers but never saw Reege! We must have missed each other.

While I was there, a young high school basketball player from Lincoln High in Brooklyn moved in during the NBA draft. Apparently they needed to get him away from B'lyn and all the attention. I cannot remember his name for the life of me but I do remember he was Stephan Marbury's cousin and he ended up being drafted by Portland. I also remember the doormen saying that tons of free stuff was sent to him all the time and a Maybach was at his disposal. Nice bling in front of the building!

Also, a fitness guru called High Voltage lived there too and the NY Times did a story on her all-white apartment. It seemed crazy to me at the time because it was a ton of $$ to throw into a rental but what do I know. Here's a link.

(Now that I have typed all this I am filled with shame and agree with FastEddie that this is one of the most pathetic embarrassing threads ever. For real. And to make it worse, I work in the PR biz and should know better than to be all semi-B-well-really-C-level-star struck.)
