Re: Soul Flavors is closing
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have friends and coworkers from the SW and CA that say Taqueria is pretty good compared to anything they have had out west. Not the best, bt definitely head and shoulders above anything thye have had in the tri-state area. In fact, my one coworker's wife, who is of Mexican decent herself, and grew up in CA insists they make the trek to JC from Princeton, just to eat there regularly.

Orale is nice for the decor and festive ambiance, but the fgood lacks. It is bland, overpriced, and the service is mediocre. The pork belly I had there was deep fried and hard as a rock. The marrow was tasteless, and the little cast iron queso appetizers were greasy and lacking.

I will go there for drinks, but even there, I think the bar at Hard Grove is better.

I stopped there this afternoon with my girlfriend. When the chips and salsa arrived, she wasn't too satisfied, since she used to love Baja's. We were both also mildly befuddled by the prices for what seemed to be straight up Tex-Mex, and by the use if jack cheese in everything.

But the entrees we ordered arrived, a quesadilla maya (with steak and cactus), and the veggie burrito, we understood about the pricing. The entrees were largish to huge in portion. My girlfriend's burrito was the size of my forearm.

They were also fairly well executed, tasty, and full of fresh ingredients. Each individual ingredient stood out well, and together, as a dish, they blended into more than the sum of their parts.

We will both be going back again. My girlfriend is a vegetarian, and had frequently been disappointed with the standard veggie fajitas at Baja, complaining about the plain peppers and onions they sold as a dish. She was more than pleased with her meal today.

I went there with my girlfriend this past week. We each had soup, her the lentil, and I had the minestrone. Both were excellent. I had the orecchiette, and a side of meatballs since they are supposed to be excellent, and my girlfriend had the Penne ala Norma. Both dishes were very well made, balanced in flavor, and hit the spot. We capped it off with some espresso, and split one of the crostati.

Price-wise, the place is spot on. Our dinners were under $40 for two, with starters and a split dessert. Quality-wise, we both felt the dishes were delicious, simple, but very well prepared and fresh. To me, their soups were great, but the meatballs were almost ideal, with a fluffy, tender texture, and a moist, well seasoned sauce. I would easily make a meal out of a full order, some sharp cheese and crusty bread.

In terms of execution, even though the menu is much more simple, the food is just as good as GPs by Hamilton Park. It's a very welcome addition to the area for me, as a life long JC resident.

Re: Gov. Christie Fires Schools Chief, Bret Schundler

The thing about Schundler is, that although he is a jerk socially, and he did try to game his way up the national Republican ladder by touting his freak election here for mayor, the man is a technocrat extraordinaire. You don't mess with someone like that. You try to screw them over and they have all the documentation they ever need to bury you.

Good for you Brett. I may not like you, but I do believe in what's right.

The data was correct in the initial draft, and it was Christie's edits that caused the problems.

What about the 11 points lost for removing the uion agreement?

Nope, he is at fault. He scuttled a winning plan for strictly partisan reasons. The majority of the points lost were due to him removing the union agreement. It is not simply a case of being responsible for work you delegate. He actively sabotaged the application.

#4. Don't cripple your effort just to make political points, as Christie did by striking the union agreement.

The administrative mistakes were small potatoes compared to that action. Christie did that all on his own. If he wants to stick to his action out of some principal, saying that the union agreement is no good, and therefore worth it to lose $400MM for the state, then fine. But Christie is trying to hide behind the clerk's mistake when doing a solo, impossible job.

It was his own action striking the agreement that lost the state the money. Let him fess up to it and takle his lumps, take it like an adult. By trying to hide behind Schundler and the clerk, he exposes himself as the puffy, cowardly, lying weasel he is.

But then again, this state deserves what it gets. The patronage pyramid starts at the local level. People vote for scum all the way up the line, in both Democratic and Republican districts.

Christie directly told the team revising the report to remove the reference to the union agreement, which cost the majority of the point deficit when tallying up the winners. He also assigned a single clerk to revise a 700 page report over a holiday weekend, which is when the mistaken budget numbers were inserted. The prior application by Schundler's team had the correct budget figures.

That is more than just another set of eyes. Christie directly caused all the point losses that cost NJ one of these grants.

Accountability my butt..

His cover up has already been revealed. Also, Schundler did no such thing. And it was Christie's edits that caused the omissions.

Why the lies?

Yeah, that makes so much more sense than Christie being an incompetant idealogue. How tight is that tinfoil hat you're wearing? The amount of delusion it takes to try and sell a scenario like that when the plain truth is documented, and on videotape is funny.

It's simple. The application process had a public scoring system. Christie's own actions directly caused the state's application to lose 19 points. The state came in 11th, with two points between it and the tenth place state above it. The first ten states got grants. All publicly documented.

Instead, you give us unicorns and bigfoot.

I can understand being supportive of your party. But man up and admit your guy screwed up. Children and weasels try to shift blame, and lie on top of that.

Nice try to deflect the blame from the person who actiually did the actual harm. Obama himself probably didn;t even see the applications. Yes, you can choose to be disappointed in the president if you want, but do it for actual things he does, not for reasons that require wearing tinfoil hats.

This is the reason this state gets so many crap governors and other leadership. Tribal politics. You hold leaders responsible. Christie shoudl man up and admit the big mistake he made.

Re: Gov. Christie Fires Schools Chief, Bret Schundler

Couldn't be further from the truth. The mistakes are all due to Christie's own personal actions. He rejected a union agreement that lost the proposal 14 points, and then personally appointed only a single clerk to re-do the entire 700 page proposal over the Memorial Day weekend. That's when the error crept in that that cost the proposal another five points.

Considering that NJ lost out by getting 11th place in the final tally, and thus being cut out of the funds, Christie's own aciotns caused the majority of the harm. He then tried to blame Schundler, but got caught lying when video showed that the error occurred after Christie rejected the original draft.

No need to lie to protect that fat jackass.

Edit,, Sorry about the profanity..

And as a further elaboration, the only reason I suggested that Christie should resign is because the suggestion that he fired Schundler out of some sense of accountability is laughable. It was a cover up. Plain and simple. Not illegal, just incompetent.

OK, so now we have a deflection to the president. I don't even like Schundler, and think he was a complete douchebad as mayor here. At the same thime though, Christie should admit fault and not try to make a scapegoat out of him.

Edit: Where did the reply to my post go.?

So, that means Christie should resign, since he's more at fault and video has surface confirming his side of the story?

Actually, firing Schundler is cover for Christie's own stupidity. NJ lost 14 points for not having a union agreement in place. Christie rejected Schundler's agreement out of partisan hackery. he also assigned only one clerk to re-do the entire application over a weekend, which resulted in the mistakes that resulted in a few more points being lost.

Re: J.C. Council Meeting Enacts New Zone Parking Laws

And when will the city start enforcing the existing parking regulations around the municipal courthouse? For once I'd like to come home and get into my garage without some needing to find the jerk who parked in front of it. In fact, the entire multi-block section of Summit, between Academy and High Streets is a free for all in terms of parking.

On top of that, the loitering that accompanies traffic court, with bunches of cars idling in front of driveways and hydrants, groups arguing and cat calling, and sitting and drinking publicly on homeowners steps is making the quality of life in the neighborhood dive.

Too bad the city is letting the front of the court become a hellhole.

From what I have read, FIOS TV is HD at even the basic tier, and its streams are compressed a lot less than cable's because of the bandwidth to spare on their infrastructure. Having seen it, it's really stunning, with almost no compression blocks n fast scenes.

Re: Gifted Children in JC Public Schools?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Having grown up in town, I can defintely say that there is a gifted program in the city. They are in all the grade schools, and have been since about 1978. I was in one of the pilot classes when I was in the 5th grade, and stayed in them till graduation. They tend to do accellerated work in all subjects, and also independent projects. In the first few years they also did a lot of field trips and would also select students to go to science challenges and other such events.

They also have a higher tier accellerated program in which the brightest kids in the gifted programs are given the opportunity to take the equivalent of advanced high school classes. This program is in one school, and students are selected from gifted classes city-wide. It also has its own dedicated teaching staff. When i was in it, it was the AEP (Acceleration and Enrichment Program). Aside from the quality of coursework, and teachers who strove to challenge their students, it was also very diverse.

Re: any IT/tech shops to recover laptop hard disk?
Home away from home
Home away from home

jclxz is correct. There is a world of difference between software and hardare failures when it comes to recovering data from hard drives.

Software issues include mistaken deletion, formats, operating system issues and other causes that make the data inaccessible, but probably leave it intact on the drive for recovery. But, precautions muct be taken to make sure that the drive clusters that the data were on are not overwritten. Trying to boot, install recovery software or other operations can make it worse. The best method is the one jclxz stated, to mount the drive in another system using a drive cable, and run recovery software.

Hardware issues are another matter entirely. Trying to spin up a drive that has failed can cause the data to be entirely irrecoverable, except by very expensive methods involving clean rooms and specialized equipment, software and methodologies. This can be worth it, but only if the data is valuable enough to pay thousands to do so.

If you have the data recovered, great. Now do yourself a favor and either go buy a stack of DVDs and make periodic backups, or, get a USB hard drive to attach to the laptop, and make periodic backups. If you decide on the latter, try to keep all your data in one directory, with subdirectories by type. For example, keep everything in the My Documents folder, but create subfolders for tax files, business documents, etc. This sill simplify backing up. Microsoft makes a free program available called Synctoy that lets you do one-click backups once you set up a relationship between the folder with your data, and the backup folder in the external drive. or, you can just drag and drop it over in My Computer, and additionally append the date to the name of the backed up folder on the portable drive after it copies so you can keep several generations of files in case you need to roll back.

When you aren't actively backing up the data, keep the external enclosure disconnected and put away in a safe place. As an addiotnal precaution, important files like taxes should be burned to DVD and kept offsite, like a safety deposit box, or a relative's.

Well, if Hoboken can be seen as a model, then yes, some transients will put down roots as parts of town gentrify to the point that they are comfortable raising children. Just walk down Washington Street in Hoboken in the daytime and look at all the strollers. This is also seen in the decrease in the number of pure bars and the increase in lounges and restaurants.

I think that Hamilton Park is probably goign to get there first, since it's fairly high density, but low rise, with places to aggregate. The area surrounding Journal Square has good potential as well. As the new high rises are built, the area around the Square will clean up as some bargain hunters fan out a few blocks. The preponderance of two story buildings makes for more personal contact among neighbors. But it'll take years, and more responsible property owners and residents. In my neck of the woods, the ability of a few menacing panhandlers to negatively impact the neighborhood is disheartening. It's hard to rectify when some property owners let them camp out on their building fronts. I can chase them off my property, but can't do anything about my neighbors except make noise complaints.

As for the concept of the "block", I remember it well. I've lived within the same two block radius for most of my life, and I remember well the days spent playing street games, neighborhood basketball and handball, and looking out for each other and the younger kids. It was a point of pride for the older kids on the block to show us how to throw a football, or the finer points of stoopball. But as kids get olderm they move on, and video games have replaced the street. When I was 12, I knew that if I stepped outside in the afternoon, my friends would be there. At least a few of us are still in the area, and we get together on the deck, cook out, and talk about the times we had.

Unfortunately, I have a great view of thier festivities, considerign i live on the corner of Summit and Newkirk. You are right about the witching hour. I don't get where these guys came from. i've lived in this neightborhood ofr years, and except fotr occasional issues, it's been good. These guys though, are something else. Really aggressive panhandlers. That, and they congregate right by my garage, so I can't get to my car without getting into a conversation.
