Re: Paris Sandwich - Food Truck

I've never actually done the banh mi from the chinatown shop since it's right around the corner from Saigon Bakery, which has my favorite. But I'll always go straight from Saigon for my banh mi to Paris because they have excellent iced milk tea. Really hoping they'll have it at the truck too.

feelngood. if I had walked my bike in the bike lane I would have pissed off anyone riding in the bike lanes. Basically it's a lose lose situation for me at this point. But thanks for taking the argument sexist.

Then, please, don't take to the internet to anonymously wish harm upon my wife and I. My name is Mike, I live on Morris in Paulus Hook and I am out in JC all week with my 2 dogs, on my bike downtown or up in the heights. If I'm behaving in any way that is so much of a detriment to your existence in this beautiful city that you wish you could flog me, please feel free to stop me and let me know. I'm always up for a discussion on how to improve our city, because I for certain am not jaded. Don't take to JClist to accuse and threaten without context.

And the double parking is still rampant, especially during weekday business hours. When I'm by myself I always ride in the streets but my wife isn't quite as comfortable on the busier streets because she gets nervous driving that close to the cars. At the speed we were moving we were quite safe and causing no harm. If we got off our bikes and walked we would have completely blocked the sidewalks.

Wasn't he the nice old man on Grand st who was always sweeping up the street? If so that's terrible news. He would always say hi when I saw him and spend a few minutes talking about my dogs, downtown, the weather. Just an absolute stand up character in the neighborhood.

So it's a beautiful sunny day, the biking lane (as always) has double parked cars sprinkled throughout and I don't want my entitled wife having to swerve into traffic around them. As we are casually riding on the sidewalk at a pace slower than the pedestrians so that we can check out the restaurants, the woman in front of us snidely tells us that there is a bike lane to which I responded that we were riding slower than her and looking for somewhere to get a drink. Obviously a floggable offense.

Re: Thirty Acres Restaurant- Jersey Avenue

JSQ - don't get me wrong, I'd still love to have the mega ethnic mart where target is but I still don't understand the qualms with Thirty Acres menu and pricing. The menu might not be a long as other places but the prices are no different than what a large number of the places opening up in JC now charge. Why not complain about the prices at Satis, White Horse, Brightside Tavern. Long time institution Casa Dante is even more expensive. The benefit I saw with the menu was that it was a rotating menu depending on the source ingredient availability, which I have rarely seen in JC before.

I'm also not sure how their method of fundraising should cause problems either. Why would you not make the attempt to raise funds from outside sources versus drown yourself in debt and saddle your restaurant with a troubled balance sheet from the start. Cocoa bakery is trying the same thing, does that make them somehow less credible a bakey in your eyes? From what i understand Cocoa is JC based and run by the former head pasty chef at Nobu.

We can argue all we want but at the end of the day it's their restaurant and they can do what they want. Whether they survive or not will be mostly on them. I just choose to say good luck.

I've been in JC for over 10 years between JSQ and PH and reading this forum almost daily that whole time. I don't post much but sometimes I just feel a need to reply. It might not have been your intent but as a JC resident your post insulted me more than the any apparent slight from Thirty Acres during the interview. How can you in one breath both denegrate JC while deriding the owners of Thirty Acres for supposedly doing the same? "Worse than Grove St"? From everything I've seen they have done well to include the community in establishing the business and promote us as a worthy destination. Why disparage someone with a culinary pedigree that brings a little extra cache to our gastronomic reputation. It might not be to your tastes but the great thing about JC is that it doesn't have to be, there are plenty of other options.

Next time you visit, possibly try expanding your range beyond Hoboken and Newport. As you said yourself it has been 4 years since you've lived here. Hopefully you can get a chance to see everything else JC has to offer besides commuter living in Newport. Ask for some recommendations on JClist, most of us actually live here and have left the confines of newport and downtown to see what it can offer.

Are we NY, no. But do we really need or want to be anyway?

unfortunately it really seems that there is little to no recourse other than to just bend over and pay up. Which is probably why the continue to do it even though it's illegal. I always wondered what would happen if someone tried to put together a class action suit against the city, but good luck trying to round up everyone that has illegally gotten booted in JC.

Out of curiosity, do you happen to have a JC parking permit? I've noticed that they only boot the cars on my block without a permit or with out of state plates. If the car has a permit but is parked on street cleaning day they just issue the ticket without the boot. I've forgotten to move my car a couple times and gotten a ticket while a couple of other cars on the street with me had gotten booted.

The booting policy is that they can only boot you if you have 3 outstanding tickets, unfortunately the city has long ignored that law and continues their booting practice despite even acknowledging it was wrong.

From what I understand there have been efforts by some, including Fulop, to repay anyone that has been illegally booted, with estimates for the cost to the city up to $1million. Of course certain members have stood against this as it would cost our already fiscally dismal city a lot of money it doesn't have.

PBW: I tried buying this property last year to completely renovate and live in but I lost out. I noticed they have ripped down the garage and the ugly yellow awnings, but not sure what the status is now. I have seen a couple out pruning back the bushes on the erie st side a couple times. It could just be that they're being held up on their renovation plans by the city, you never know here. at the least I believe the property is individual owner hands and being renovated, slowly as it may be.

Interesting side note. I researched the property and it used to be a funeral home. the whole corner of the building used to be a glass commercial front. I had wanted to reinstate the property to its original exterior look, signage and all, while updating the interior.

I highly recommend sergio at housemasters. We found him through a recommendation from our realtor. He did an amazingly thorough job on a house we bought in the heights and provided us with a complete point by point inspection report.

That's great that they're being more reasonable with the pricing and that there are some units moving. If you're looking to get into PH now is the time, and the maintenance is much more reasonable than 77 hudson although you do get a lot more amenities there.

Couldn't agree more about the penthouses, we had considered them briefly for the skylight and the roof deck but thought they were way to overpriced at that time.

Definitely should have mentioned the 33rd st train during rush hour is extremely crowded. I used to take it around 9am or so and it was still pretty bad on occasion. If you get to work early it's not as much of a problem. but during rush hour if you want to spare yourself the hassle you can do the exchange to WTC and then take the A,C,E.

good luck

I live a couple doors down from Asprey. I found my best bet was to take WTC path to newport and transfer to the 33rd st. train. Waiting for the E train at WTC is exasperating. The walk to grove isn't terrible but doing the newport transfer is only a small difference in commute time. Just jump off at newport and catch the 33rd train on the same track.

I'd be cautious about buying at asprey though. It had gone bankrupt under the first owner who spent too much and was never able to move any units. I believe a few were under contract but they backed out b/c the building took way too long to finish from what I understand. The whole building was put under a bank sale, believe they were asking between 7-8million, and is now being resold at essentially the same prices. They are really nice apartments but they're expensive units with high maintenance, no amenities and no parking as far as I know. Also not sure how fast they really are moving. That building has been empty for as long as it has been there. You don't want to be stuck in an empty building as the only person paying the maintenance charges.

They do have people on site every day now offering open house viewings but I don't know what the status is anymore. I used to speak to the foreman every week or so when he used to be onsite. I really hope it does work out though as it is a very nice building, even though they are going to eat up even more of the already limited parking on morris.
