To be fair, I never said anything about the child. I just thought the food sucked.

Also, they have finally spilled the beans (pun intended) as to their own attitude toward their customers with that post about "class". Shameful really.

Good riddance. This place screams of NYC (pretentious, subpar food); they'll fit right in with all the other underwhelming Mexican options in the city.

Wake up people. You live 10 minutes from one of the largest Hispanic populations on the East coast (Union City / North Bergen / West New York). If you want Mexican food, close your eyes and throw a dart at a map of Mexican restaurants in that area - you can't go wrong.

Art is inherently stupid. Art that blocks or detracts from the public's usage of land is a disgrace.

I hope this "art" gets vandalized constantly to the point where 1) they decide to stop fixing it, or 2) they decide to take it down.

I understand - and feel for - the family in this and any other similar case, and I do agree that those who live in the immediate vicinity would also feel a sense of shock. I guess my point should have been more towards people who express such views on the news sites (in the comments section) or in forums.

I'm not sure why, but it really ticks me off when I hear/read about stories like the young child who was murdered, and the neighbors inevitably say something to the effect of "this is such a quiet neighborhood; this sort of thing doesn't happen around here".

It just goes to show the sheltered state of mind that people all across the US live in daily, where they don't realize that murder, rape and all-around evil can occur anywhere, and is not necessarily bound by socio-economic divisions across a city or county.

I'd put them closer at 12-13, but yeah those wouldn't be actual Prep students. They are students from grammar schools all around the area who attend the summer program at the school. I would assume that those 2 (young) bozos are not the caliber of student that Prep is looking for anyway.

A police state would be awesome...but what about people leaving places like Beer Garden and Barcade? Their businesses would suffer a ton since they close at ~2ish.

Maybe a baseball bat ban would be more in line with your intended goals. I don't think the kids in the Little League would appreciate that, though.

Really? Now I hate defending GS, but the government chose/chooses to keep it a going concern, & they repaid their loans and occasionally pay 100mm+ bullship fines to FINRA/SEC, so it comes out in the wash, and you are never forced to do business with GS at rates you have no control over. Hedge Funds? you have no idea what one is, nor how they operates, nor recognize that they are small businesses, that employ competitive hard working people, ie non-Union. & these folks get fired if they slack off for a second. Most union folks can sleep for 3 months a yr and still get paid. As of the rest... it seems you despise all private companies, that pay salaries of public folks..odd.

I'm not sure when it became a virtue to dedicate your life to a corporation. There are very few evils in this world that cannot be directly linked to bankers, oilmen, or arms dealers. The fact that you have been convinced to defend these people indicates that you are either a gullible idiot or one of them.

How much does the US government spend every year on defense? A government you elect. How much do you spend every year on gas? How much do you borrow? Look in the mirror and cast the first stone.

Ianmac47 - you bankroll the bankers, oilmen, and arms dealers, like everyone else in the US. You bankroll them because you NEED them. Drop the attitude and pretense that they are the problem.

Oh! You got me!

No smart reply? Yes I did, didn't I :)

If I were born a slave, even to the kindest master, I would still be a slave.

The power of corporations is institutionalized and systemic. I can no more choose to not participate as I could choose not to breath.

That doesn't make these institutions good or positive forces. That doesn't mean the average person should be defending them.

Your response is like telling a woman facing the glass ceiling at work to just not be a woman, or a minority facing racial prejudice to not be a minority.

Instead of allowing corporations to do as they wish, we could have more aggressive regulation, better enforcement and higher corporate taxes. If bankers want to get piad six and seven figure salaries, fine, but give back to the rest of the nation in higher income taxes.

Attacking organized labor, one of the last lines of defense between the corporation and the working individual is not the solution. Allowing Goldman Sachs to dictate financial policy or Exxon Mobile to dictate energy policy or Northrop Grumman to dictate foreign policy is not good for the people.

And yes, every single American participates in a system that enriches and empowers these and companies like them. But that doesn't mean we need to shill for them. That doesn't mean we voted for the politicians that line their pockets with tax dollars.

What always tickles me is that the common man is enraged at Wall Street and the bankers 6 figure salary. Where's the outrage at MLB players who make 10 times that? or the NFL player? The NBA is in a lockout because they can't agree over how many millions of dollars to pay their players. But yeah, let's tax the greedy bankers.

Italmoda

Hoboken, NJ

(201) 656-6886

I actually went to this place. The lady who works there is very knowledgeable. We'll see how her craftsmanship is but I think it'll be fine.

+1 to Italmoda. I needed a suit slightly altered (jacket sleeves and pant length). I took it to DeCarlos in Jersey City. Great service and great location; reminiscent of a nice boutique in NYC. However, he was backed up and I wouldn't have my suit back in over a week, and the prices were fairly high.

I searched on yelp and found Italmoda, and took my suit there. Her locale is exactly the opposite; small, dingy place, but her work was excellent, quick, and cheaper than DeCarlos. She was also a very nice lady and I would definitely use her services again in the future.

(note: if you drive there, make sure to double and triple check the parking signs. I've lived in the area my whole life, including in Hoboken for 4 years, and I still managed to somehow park my car on the "resident only - will boot" side of the street. Luckily I noticed my mistake and quickly moved the car )

Re: Hows the Lincoln & Milton neighborhood?
#75

I grew up on that block. It was quiet then, save for a few undesirable elements farther down Lincoln. For the most part, the area seems to have stayed the same / improved, with the notable exception of the family in the thread that is floating around these boards (with loud music / partying in their yards).

To me, partying outside is not a bad thing, as my family does it regularly. The key is how you control noise, and how late you stay outside. The family in question does not seem to have any regard for the well being of the neighbors, so that is one negative.

In general, I wouldn't classify that area as bad by any means. You're a short walk to JFK, which links you to both JSQ and NYC via the bus. You're also a short walk to Central Ave for essentials (bank, groceries, pharmacy). Not sure how parking is in the area, but one downside of the heights is the lack of parking late nights.

back on topic, I think noise is just one of the acceptable tradeoffs for living in an urban setting. Others, such as petty crime/vandalism can and should be dealt with, but if all you can complain about is loud noises outside your window, then you should probably look into Secaucus instead of downtown Jersey City.

They do it a couple of times a year. The most egregious violators are towed away. The rest just get fines.

Local governments are already facing huge deficits. Not sure where the money to expand the light rail would come from. Also, the vans serve NJ to NY commuters every day. In order to replace them, they'd have to build a rail specific tunnel to connect the two states. I'm sure that should be easy enough to pass legislation on and to start building.

Oh..

Maybe s/he just moved here from Hoboken and hasn't gone all the way up Central to find these places.

There's a hardware store a few blocks north on Central, close to South Street I believe (a block north of the post office). There's tons of Pizzerias, Italian restaurants, Mexican, sandwich shops, etc. all along Central Ave.

For basic needs, Kennedy Center and CH Martin has a ton of stuff that may save you a trip to Target or Walmart (household items, curtain rods, etc. etc. ).

Stop and Shop should cover you for groceries, and any one of the abundant vegetable stores should cover you for fresh produce.

Now if you want to drink, Hoboken is still the place to go

Small independent clothing stores like that usually flounder even in Hoboken. There just isn't enough demand in the area for too many shops like that.

As far as the rest of it - it's slowly coming along. Part of the reason is probably that people would rather drive or PATH into Hoboken or NYC for a night out than stay local.

crime wise the area shouldn't be too bad. that particular area of the heights is pretty quiet. the jitneys run until pretty late on JFK, but they do stop running around 1am or so. however, you can also take bus #99s from port authority. It runs extremely limited service after midnight (110am, 210am, 410am) but it's better than nothing I guess. From there it would be a short walk from Central ave to the house.

went for the first time this weekend. not sure what to make of it. friday was crowded but not overly packed. not a huge wait to play any of the games. scene was very sterile...kind of hard to describe. i didnt like the fact that they were blaring music; they should have it softer to encourage conversation, or just get rid of it altogether.

i went back saturday night and the line was 15-20 people deep, so i went elsewhere. overall a great addition to the neighborhood, as that stretch of newark ave is now more heavily trafficked on fri / sat night, but it's not my top choice for a JC bar

From most areas near JFK blvd in the heights, the bus is pretty consistently 25 mins from JC to Port Authority, plus whatever time you'd need from port authority to Columbus Circle. The buses run every 3-4 mins during morning rush hour, but the majority of those are the small commuter vans. The NJ Transit buses run every 10 mins or so. I normally get on the commuter vans when I travel into the city, but most people on here have an extreme aversion towards them, so I figured I'd just post that as a warning.
