Well yeah, since he ended up with 20,981, I think he still has 14k+ votes. Matsikoudis is running a Washington Generals campaign - seems like Fulop (even with fatigue/disappointment) should be 2:1 at least. Some people will vote for Matsikoudis as a protest, but he doesn't seem to have any meaningful, passionate constituency. The real limiter on Fulop's ability to run up impressive numbers won't be Matsikoudis as much as it will be turnout, I'd think.

That's brilliant! Bus is such an overlooked, underutilized and insanely cheap (relative to rail) and versatile option. Also much more easily adaptable to changing needs in the future.

So here's the funny part, Ms. Congeniality - I never said one way or the other how I feel about the topic. You also don't know whether I've signed the petition or not. I'll go back to what I said earlier:

"Knowing how to motivate people instead of preaching to them from a position of assumed moral superiority is the key."

Name calling doesn't help, either.

Either way, did you sign the petition? if not, you should just STFU then.

And if you knew anything about how statistics are used, you never would have said that. Sample size applies to polling. You aren't taking a poll - you are collecting signatures. Is your poll that you asked 270,000 people if they would sign your self-serving petition and only 300 did?

I like your approach to building consensus though - very inclusive: Sign our petition or eff you! That might have at least something to do with why 269,700 people haven't signed...

Breathe. Exhale. Go to your happy place. My only point was saying "300 signatures" isn't really saying much.

As is often the case with Civic JC and the like - there's a lot of noise but not much effective action. Knowing how to motivate people instead of preaching to them from a position of assumed moral superiority is the key. How to motivate people around here is the million dollar question, though.... Apathy rules here.

Once you fall on your head on concrete, all bets are off. Yes, Mikey - people ride much faster than the pace of a walk. I honest to god had someone ride by me on a small motorcycle a few weeks ago. On a sidewalk. And not one of the motorized bicycles that you see everywhere now (I see those on the sidewalk on Grand, frequently). Here are three bike/pedestrian fatalities that happened on sidewalks and another very serious accident:

If you throw in a plan to lock up adults riding bikes on sidewalks, I'd vote for you for mayor.

brewster wrote:

Me too. The car culture in JC is "anything goes" because they know there's simply no enforcement. Use a turn lane to skip all that traffic going straight? No problem. Right on red forcing the oncoming car to screech it's brakes? No problem. Ignoring stop signs? You know the answer.

And those are all the moving violations that you need actual expensive cops for. Parking flunkies are cheap by comparison, they "should" be able to shower the city with cash, but this being JC, somehow the JCPA struggles, with spotty enforcement that only reinforces the sense of lawlessness.

I could easily solve the whole illegal parking thing in JC. Give a parking flunky a smartphone and train them to photograph the car in a way leaving no doubt of the location and that they're stopped. Pic are instantly transmitted to an office worker who verifies the legitimacy of the infraction using geotagging and timestamp, and boom, out goes a ticket like the red light cams did. Too close to corner, in the lane at Newark, in a bike lane, double parked? Done.

Even better, how about an app for citizens to take the pics. Big brotherish? Sure. But we need relief from the inconsiderate pricks.

I'm talking about the Jersey City Loews - there have been studies that by the city and an independent firm that put the range between $20 million and $30 million to fully renovate the JC Loews. The cost of the Brooklyn renovation is irrelevant.

I don't know why you keep wildly speculating on the cost of renovation (you've said "$75 million" and "almost $100 million") when there have been actual studies, made public, by people who actually know what they are talking about, that range between $20 million and $30 million.

The city should pay to restore the Loew's and/or utilize legitimate and equitable public/private partnerships. But the first dollar should not go into that place until the day after the lease is up and the FOL are no longer the beneficiaries.

As opposed to low-price schlock that virtually no one attends? I'll take the restoration. And you are being overly simplistic assigning an one-price-fits-all to things - some shows would be expensive, others (particularly community run events) would be much less so. You claim to be a free markets guy - what could be better than that?

The city never really understood what it was doing nor what it was up against. As a result, we'll be stuck in this nowhere for years to come - not enough money to properly restore and renovate (so no ability to book big acts and earn your way out of the hole) and people running the thing who believe it's their own little playhouse, either clueless or indifferent to what the broader public (i.e. taxpayers, who are subsidizing their clubhouse) want.

Sigh. Jersey City. It could be something. But it isn't.

Strange how people equate guns with strength. They are really emblems of fear. People who are so scared of the world they can't walk through it without something that can kill off anything they perceive as a threat. That is the ultimate snowflake.

Jesus Christ, Mary Pat - do you even have the ability to critique information as you take it in or is it just a straight mainlining of Hannity, Rush and the Dooce?

No. There isn't only one hotel in Tahiti. $2,000 a night? No. There are many, many for far less - the InterContinental is showing up on Trip Advisor, for instance, for $270 per night. This is the same asinine shit that led to a bunch of bobble heads running around saying Obama's trip to India cost $2 billion. That was absurd on its face - if you stopped and thought about math - m-a-t-h - for like three seconds, you'd realize that unless they were sleeping with blankets that were stuffed with ten million dollar bills, it would be impossible to spend $2 billion. But thinking isn't much at a premium these days...
