I would recommend Big Drum - they've done beautiful work for me - i've used them many times. They moved from the mall to their own space - i think it's 127 First Street, it's among the warehouses downtown heading towards the waterfront area. It's a nice space.

Have they been consistently a month and half behind since moving in? How partial are the payments they've been making?
OK, you say it's tough to get good tenants where you are, but are they good tenants? Have they been paying on time consistently for a long period and then fallen back due to loss of employment? Or has this been going on basically since they've moved in? Sorry, I don't know the tenancy/bankruptcy laws, and it sounds like you want to give them time, but I don't see how you can renew their lease in May if they're not completely caught up by that time. Unless you are satisfied with these partial, late payments.

Not a fan of bubble tea or vegan deserts.
I do like vegetarian meals and incorporate them into my meat-eating diet, but when it comes to vegan deserts - to me, a good vegan desert is a nice fruit bowl and not mocks of cookies and cakes made without dairy and eggs. I would go, but would go more often if it was more like Janam - traditional teas and selections of real cookies and cakes (and a nice fruit bowl). :)

And there was that poor guy who got his throat cut and died in the early morning commute hours while he was standing on the Light Rail platform, waiting for his train along with the other commuters. What if the thinking was: He shouldn't have been out there, in the morning, going to work! What did he expect, being out at that hour!
People are sometimes comfortable with indirectly 'blaming' the victim for being out late ... Yes, we live in a high-crime area and do have to take precautions. Of course we have to take measures to try to keep ourselves safe. But, in the end, if our sidewalks are not safe at 3am, they are probably not really all that safe at 8am, either.

Enough crime happens in broad daylight around here. We shouldn't entertain the smallest amount of 'well, you shouldn't have been walking the streets that late!' thinking. Crime at any hour is not okay.

I strolled through the Farmers' Market, but didn't see the cart parked on the nearby corners ....

I doubt they could show a first-run movie ... they would have to pay much, much more to rent the print, they would have to turn over a high percentage of each ticket sale to the movie company, and .... many movie companies have exclusive contracts with theater chains anyway. Plus, I don't know the specifics on it, but they may not have the right projector equipment to show new releases?
I'm sure they are doing their best with their extremely limited financial resources and their all-volunteer staff. They also do good work in expanding on their programming by sometimes including guest speakers and displaying memorabilia. Even including 'art/foreign/second-run' films, (and I have no argument with them doing so, sounds good to me) they'll never make enough money doing that to completely refurbish the theater - the money has to come from government grants/corporate donations. The place needs a LOT of money. I'm very happy to support the place and like going there but then again I do have more of an interest in classic films than my friends might. Classic films in a classic movie theater ... And I do think they try to branch out more with their 'live-performance' shows (whatever it may be). And yes, the lack of AC makes it a short season for them.

When you say 'leadership', you don't mean the Friends of the Loew's who have worked so hard to preserve the theater? I'm sure they are fully aware of the theater's potential. It's a gorgeous place, a historic landmark - never to be duplicated again .... thank goodness that these volunteers have stepped up to preserve it and continue to fight the thankless powers that be.

It's been my experience that even when ashtrays and ashcans are plentiful and nearby, people throw their butts on the ground. It's part of their smoking habit - they must like to do it - the whole flicking of the butt to the ground. I'm not speaking particularly against the folks at ZH who didn't have ashtrays ... but where I work, we have an area right outside the building that the smokers use. And it's a nice area - manicured garden in spots, benches and lots and lots and lots of ashcans. Walk by there anytime of the day - the ground is covered in cigarette butts and the smokers will even toss butts into the garden, which is really sad. Every time I walk by there, I think ... "Why do they feel it's okay that someone has to clean up all these butts after them?? Pick butts out of the flower bed? When they are provided with numerous ash cans?" That's the way it is. Or if they're not finishing the whole cigarette, they put it 'out' that way, i guess.

I went on Saturday night and loved it. Wait for food was not that bad at all. We tried the burgers, chicken sandwich and sausage sampler. Sausages were great! ... kitchen staff was very nice - they were definitely working hard. I did have to ask for mustard, but I think they will fix that and put mustard out for self-service the same way they have ketchup available. I understand the comment about the trays, but I don\'t think trays are necessary.
We did have to search for a seating a little bit, we were a group of 4. We sat at a bench that only had 2 other people at it. I think people need to open up a little bit to \'family-style\' seating ... definitely got the impression from some people that they thought they had their bench to themselves. We got there around 9:00pm and there were a couple tables where parents had spread their kids toys all over the table. I don\'t mean a coloring book and crayons, I mean complicated 3-level, huge stuff. It\'s great that it\'s family-friendly, but don\'t bring your living rooms out with your kids. Seems like the \'default\' beer size is their liter size. I don\'t think many will complain, and the big mugs add to the atmosphere, but I had to really drive the point home with the bartender that I wanted the smaller size. I agree that they need a cider on draft - would be so welcoming in the hot summer for those of us who are not big beer drinkers. Overall, it\'s a great place and a welcome addition to downtown JC. I love a casual place where you can sit and relax with a beer and have good conversation with your friends outdoors on a summer night - and actually hear them. I\'ll definitely be back soon.

There is a parking lot, ... basically you drive down Jersey Ave, cross Grand and over on the left is a lot with a sign for Zeppelin Hall. It's just a very short walk from there to the restaurant, but parts are still under construction and there aren't exactly sidewalks around getting out of the lot.

What is the set-up? How does it work? "Line for food" makes me think you get your own booze and food from ... what? ... booths? ... and so then there's no table service. Which is ok, I just don't want to sit there waiting for the waitress to come over. :) Sorry, I was at a German biergarten once in Frankfurt but it was so long ago, I've forgotten. :) I might try this place out tomorrow ...

If you are currently covered under an employer's plan, I think COBRA payments have been drastically reduced this year. You should be able to extend your current plan for 6 months with COBRA. When I did it 3 years ago, my COBRA payment was around $600/month and I had to drop that after 2 months and go without insurance until I got another job a few months later. It was ridiculous. But I hear COBRA payments have been significantly reduced, so look into that.

Would also be happy to read any possible solutions .... fellow long-time ant infestation sufferer here .... For years and years, I would get heavy infestation in my apartment during the summer. However, this year ... I actually had a small group in my kitchen and bathroom all winter long. First time I saw them in the winter!! And my apartment is not a warm place in the winter ... They travel this route through a spot in my kitchen I haven't found (the area they come out of is so full of cracks - forget about it - old apartment building) to a spot in my bathroom. I fill the spot in the bathroom, but they always find another crack in the wall or tile to use. I've filled 3 bathroom spots already. I know it sounds crazy that I had ants in the winter, but I did.

I used to pick up the PATH from Hoboken in the 80s for a daily commute. At that time, that station was the worst. Packed like crazy, I would watch 3 trains go by before I could inch my way closer and closer along with the throng to get near the door.
Hoboken lightened up when NJ Transit started running suburban commuter trains direct into Penn Station NY. Before, all the suburban NJ commuters would have to train into Hoboken, and then get on the Path. Now, many of them can go direct into NYC. I moved to JC, and started taking the PATH from Grove daily. Back then, I could get on the platform (I couldn't at Hoboken - so that was a big improvement) but trains during peak commuting time would still certainly be at capacity - even back then. Outside of peak commuting time though, it was fine. Watching all the condos go up for the last 20 years in Jersey City, I often wondered who exactly it was who thought there would be no problem with PATH handling all these new people? I can imagine the realtors telling these buyers that all they had to do was hop on the PATH and have an easy and quick commute into the city .... little did they know my PATH car was always full at Grove during peak commuting time long before these buildings went up ...

I have gotten many, many framing jobs done by Big Drum in the mall and love the owners. I hope they have great success in their new location. I can\'t recommend them highly enough. I have used them for small personal jobs and large corporate jobs and have been greatly satisfied with the results every time. Their recommendations are fantastic. I\'m sure they will have more flexibility business-wise for display pieces in their new location than they did in the mall. They are so friendly and so wonderful to work with, very helpful and always mindful of your price point. They were always so patient with me while I asked to look at frame sample after frame sample after frame sample and would explain all the different options for matting and materials to me. I even brought in a damaged print and they did such a fantastic job with it. I\'ve used them for everything - cheap posters, limited edition prints and objects that needed shadow boxes. I\'ve used them very successfully with pieces that I had to have framed for CEOs of companies.
Oh, and this is not a shill post. I really am just a very statisfied customer who wants to spread the word and recommend them. JC List is always looking for business recommendations, even though we spend more time complaining, usually. I'm sorry to read a post calling them 'idiots'. What's important here? Agreeing with their business choices for display pieces or getting your framing job done right by people you like? And suppporting a family-owned, local business?

Re: ox restaurant

---|---|---|---|---|
Just can't stay away
![]() ![]() |
I've been dying to try Ox after reading so much good press about it here on JC List. I finally made it over for brunch recently. It was terrible, really terrible. Ranks among one of my worst brunch meals in Jersey City. My boyfriend and I both had the eggs benedict and ordered one side of potatoes to split. If I could just say it was nothing special - well, fine, I would just leave it at that - but, it was utterly tasteless. A real disappointment. The hollandaise had no flavor whatsoever and the muffin was just barely warmed - not toasted - and pretty thick which would sound like a desirable thing, but it ended up adding to the overall bland flavor. One of my eggs was poached too well and was almost solid while the other egg was the opposite. I know brunch can be an iffy experience because, of course, you don't have the head chef working usually, but regardless, if you are going to have the attitude about your restaurant and its food that this place does, you better put out a good eggs benedict. We were both very disappointed with it. I went there knowing I would be paying more and getting less, but I wanted to try it because I was hoping it was going to be worth it - it wasn't. We had to pay extra for the potatoes and the plate didn't come dressed with any greens. We usually go to Madame Claude's or Skinner's Loft for brunch and are always happy with both. Madame Claude's is just always terrific, and your plate come with potatoes and greens. Skinner's Loft will also give you muffins and rolls and I love that.
I do want to say that the service was good, and thankfully friendly and easy-going in spite of the industrial/cold attitude of the decor. Both of the two servers working the floor visited our table a few times and even the bartender stepped out from behind the bar to clear our plates. But this is not to suggest I get service I'm unhappy with in other places. I also get great service at MC's and SL. We do also like Marco & Pepe for brunch and don't have issues with service there, either. The only place where the service is usually poor is Beechwood, I think. We stopped going there for brunch altogether. One more good note in Ox' favor was the bloody mary. Good bloody marys. Reminded me of the bloody marys we used to get at the old Ale House - before it was sold. It had horseradish in it, thank goodness. Sometimes you order a bloody mary and all you're getting is vodka with tomato juice. I'm still curious about their dinner service, I imagine it could only be better and still would like to try it, but there's no way I'm going to get my boyfriend to go back with me anytime soon. Maybe I can get him to go back for a drink and try something off the bar menu .... but we'll have to stick to our usual places for brunch.
