My bag was searched at Exchange Place a few weeks ago during the morning rush. The officer asked me to open my bag, poked around in it, and let me go on my way. It took 30 seconds or less.

Seems like it would probably be easier (and much, much cheaper) to just get a foam mattress topper from Target in whichever of King, Queen, Full, or Twin best fits inside your son's tent. If the tent is smaller than that, then maybe you could cut down a Twin?

In answer to your question, I don't know of a place that makes custom mattresses, but I'd bet someone here does.

Merry Christmas!

But there is evidence. Vast, heaping, seemingly incontrovertible evidence to support the notion that stricter gun laws lead to lower violent crime. It exists all over the world. Why does the U.S. rank at or near the top in almost any measure of violent crime among the OECD nations?

Let's assume for the moment that this is true---that more guns lead to more crime.

How is it a good solution to disarm all law-abiding citizens, leaving guns only in the hands of those who have them for nefarious purposes?

Unless you think you can achieve a world without ANY guns (and you can't), then you can't disarm people who simply want to protect themselves from those who hope to do harm.

Just one more observation...the new attack that antis are making is that we in NJ have high "gun crime" (of course, other crime is OK) because of lax laws in other states. HOW COME THOSE OTHER STATES HAVE LOWER CRIME RATES THAN NJ IF IT IS SO EASY TO GET GUNS THERE?

+10000000

Yes. The argument that there is high gun crime in NJ because criminals can get guns in Virginia should translate into even HIGHER gun crimes rates in Virginia---but it doesn't.

Besides, when you make it difficult to obtain guns legally, all you're doing is making it difficult for the LAW-ABIDING to obtain guns (since, by definition, they're the only ones who obtain guns legally). Criminals will always find a way to get their hands on a gun, and it won't be through the procedures outlined in the state code.

Virginia has a One Gun a Month law.

Yes. Unless you have a CCP, in which case you can (and I have friends who do) purchase as many guns per month as you want. And still Virginia has lower gun crime rates than NJ. It's a head-scratcher, ain't it?

Gallon of milk at BJ's = $1.99.

Not true. I'd rather there be citizens trained in the use of firearms around in the event I find myself the victim of a violent crime. At least that way, there's chance the crime can be stopped. By the time the police get there, it's always too late.

Reading the headlines posted by GrovePath this morning made me realize that it's a good thing that NJ has such strict gun laws! Keeping guns out of the hands of the law-abiding while gangbangers are running around shooting people and robbing gas stations sure makes me feel safe!

They're always nice to me too. I usually just smile and say "no thanks." Although I'm not convinced they're gangbangers, I'm also not convinced that they're selling chocolate for a legit cause either.

I stopped by here this afternoon. I second the comment about the vast selection of microbrews. Also, I actually think the prices---on wine at least---seem better than other stores in the area.

I'll also definitely be going back.

No offense taken. I already know that the suburbs are a better fit for me, but because of the hours I work, I've made a choice to forgo the comforts of the suburbs in exchange for a tolerable commute. One reason I live in JC instead of in Manhattan is because it has allowed me to retain some of the comforts of the suburbs (in-unit washer/dryer, car, (relatively) spacious apartment) while staying close to work.

I will also add that although I feel perfectly safe running in JC during the daytime so long as I stay within a few blocks of the waterfront, I've given up the ipod for now. It's one thing to block out your surroundings when you're running in a suburban neighborhood with no traffic and no shady characters, but I feel like in JC I should be aware of what's going on around me.

I live right near there, and while I think that part of 2nd St is fine during the day (there are enough people going back and forth between ShopRite and the Mandalay, Portofino, and A Condos), I definitely wouldn't wander around back there at night.

I run along the waterfront, through Newport, and down to Paulus Hook via Washington Blvd and Grove St. It makes about a 5 mile loop. To go longer, you could go up to Hoboken via the new pedestrian path (although I think you have to go through the train station to get back to the waterfront) or you could cross over to Liberty State park.

I only run in JC during the day and I've never had any problems. Any before- or after-hours running I do on the treadmill.

You're probably being sarcastic here, but I would do exactly what you suggest. I would also, of course, investigate whether the local schools have a high percentage of kids that go on to 4-year colleges and universities, many AP or IB course offerings, and high SAT scores. But, as you probably know, there is a negative correlation between a high percentage of kids on assisted lunches and all of these measures of academic achievement so looking for not much of one probably will also lead to a lot of of the other.

I mostly agree with you, but I'm going to confess that I've started carrying a backpack to work. I bring work home with me nearly every night, and between carting all of that paperwork back and forth and carrying my lunch and my shoes, a purse (even a big woman's totebag) just wasn't big enough (plus it got really heavy on my shoulder).

I promise I try not to whack people with my bag, and when the train is crowded I take the backpack off and carry it in front of me.

Also, I know I probably look really dorky. I considered this, and decided that I just don't care =)

p.s. I'm not an Indian man.

Re: Today's "Children of Faith" Festival at City Hall - Write to the Mayor if Disturbed
#85

I'm not sure what City Hall's policy is specifically, but in terms of the First Amendment, if a government-run institution (like a school), allows its space to be used by the community for some events, it must allow the space to be used for all events (barring some specific exception). Once the government has demonstrated its willingness to open its space to the public for this type of organized event, it may not discriminate on the basis of viewpoint when deciding which groups it will allow to use the space. For instance, if City Hall allows a pro-gay group to use the space to hold meetings, it must also allow this Children of Faith group the space on the same terms.

Now, if City Hall doesn't want to allow *any* group to use their space, that's fine too. But once it opens its doors, it opens its doors to all.

Quote:
The signs are coming down! The hours of usage permitted on the northern section of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway in Jersey City will now be, as required by law, 24/7.

The official opening and dedication of the Walkway and the Long Slip Canal Bridge will occur on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to celebrate the closing of another gap in the 18.5 linear mile pathway at the river edge planned to extend continuously linked from the tip of Bayonne to the GW Bridge. A very important part of this event is the focus on the hours of access to the walkway; this is a reconfirmation of the rule of 24 hour access to the river edge. The NJ Department of Environmental Protection successfully negotiated with the developer of the Jersey City segment to make this happen. Another focus of this opening event should be the role of the general public in getting the gates opened and the hours enforced. The insistence of the general public for their right to access brought about, to a great extent, this appropriate resolution.

Congratulations to all participants for the continuing dialogue and the sincere efforts to bring this matter to a successful conclusion.

President
Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy

I mostly saw it in Washington, D.C. In particular, my favorite little Italian deli that sold pizza by the slice had those boxes. But maybe that place was out of the ordinary, I don't know.

Anyway, Paulus Hook Pizza was good. I guess that's all I needed to say.

Well, to be fair, no grease got in my car. But I still like the cardboard single-slice boxes. Easier to carry, stays warmer, etc.

If y'all haven't seen this around here, maybe it's an outside-of-the-NYC-metro-area thing. I was surprised when they just stuffed a slice into a bag, but what do I know?

I went here tonight and got a margherita slice and a slice of pepperoni. It was good enough that I'd definitely go back again.

My one complaint is they put my to go order on a paper plate in a paper bag. Seems like they could get those single-slice cardboard containers like other pizza places have---it keeps the slice warmer and it reduces the chance of getting grease in my car.
