Colorado Woman Spots Stolen Bike on Craigslist, Steals it Back

.By Christina Ng | ABC News Blogs ? 8 hours ago.. .

A Colorado woman took matters into her own hands when her bike was stolen from outside of a Boulder sports bar. She tracked down her stolen bike on Craigslist, pretended to be an interested buyer and stole back her own bike.

Kathryn Lucas, 25, parked her bike outside of a bar where she went to watch a University of Colorado football game on the night of Oct. 4, according to ABC News? Denver affiliate KMGH.

When she left the bar to head home, she discovered that her black Trek 1.2 road bike was missing. After filing a police report, she and her roommate began searching Craigslist to see if the thief was trying to sell the bike.

Sure enough, Lucas found a posting with a photo of her bike. She immediately recognized her bike?s red handle-bar tape and her water bottle holder.

Lucas responded to the Craigslist ad, pretending to be an interested buyer. Minutes later, a person using the name ?Lance Robinson? responded with his phone number and instructed her to text him so he could send her his address.

On Sunday, Lucas went to the man?s apartment complex and asked if she could test ride the bike.

?I started riding it and knew it was my bike, so I just kept riding it,? Lucas told KMGH. ?I rode it to my car and then threw it it in my car and then drove away.?

Lucas said she had not been planning on getting the bike back that way, but took advantage of an opportunity and made a spur-of-the-moment decision.

?They were a lot bigger than I thought they were,? Lucas said. ?I thought it?d be like a little person that stole bikes and I?d be like, ?Hey, I called the police and that?s my bike and you?re trying to sell it to me,? but I just took it for a ride and went with it.?

After she had recovered her bike, Lucas called the police and gave them the thief?s address. ?Lance Robinson? turned out to be 18-year-old Denzel O?Neal Crawford, who did not have a prior police record.

Crawford was arrested, confessed to stealing the bike and was released on bond. Police also told Lucas that, though her recovery mission was successful, it was not a tactic they recommend, according to KMGH.

?They told me for future reference that I probably would not want to do that by myself,? Lucas said.

In the mall area or near the holland tunnel area one can often see bikes unchained. Simply the thieves have not stolen a bike lock yet. Anyone looking for a bike needs to look at this area immediately. They are literally get away vehicles for the many boosters in the area. There have also been reports of a white van with graffiti that routinely cruises this area and buys used bikes with "no questions asked". This has been reported to the police before. The description of the latino guy sounds like a very well known thief that sells stolen shrimp and clothing around lucky seven. This guy is also known to police that might be using him and others as CIs on drug cases. The real world is ugly sometimes.

The police constantly park in the crosswalk on this corner. There was one there when I went through about 11am. Huge Ford SUV right in the middle of the crosswalk. I love Toricos but the construction vans that are usually parked there are very hard to see around. Maybe they should block off the stretch of Erie from Newark to 1st. Might also prevent the road from being used as cut through to the Holland tunnel so much. Just a quick random thought. What would be the negatives?

So is there actually a close at 2am, raise hell and get drunk bar going there or a restaurant that closes at 10pm that just happens to serve booze going there? I am confused. Does anyone know exactly what is intent on going there presently?

The No Left Turn on Marin truly makes no sense to me. So instead, cars have to turn left onto Manila, and drive through one-way streets in a quiet residential neighborhood, disrupting those neighborhoods? Versus going down Marin, a multi-lane commercial road intended to move traffic from north to south and vice versa?

Does this actually make sense to anybody? Or are JC officials on drugs?

It only makes sense when they choose not to enforce the "box" at the light on 12th street. Traffic going into the tunnel blocks the intersection so traffic trying to go straight toward 14th has to swerve into oncoming traffic. If someone takes the left out of the tunnel there is the potential for a head on at the 12th st light. The real solution should be to enforce the box not the left on to Marin, for all the reasons you mention.

All of what has been said is true. Drivers around here are incredibly inconsiderate. Taxi drivers, dollar bus drivers and police seem to be amoung the worst. (Folks around here use their horn more than their directionals) Others like myself, that have lived in other parts of the world, attribute it to the self centered culture that is pervasive in this area. Other parts of the country like Florida and Mass. have less skilled drivers. Around here many drivers are skilled but just rude.

It must also be said that pedestrians around here often act in the same manner. They will cross in the wrong spots against lights. I've seen folks walk directly into traffic just on faith that an auto will have to stop to avoid hitting them.

Only aggressive ticketing and the pain of a fine will keep any of these aholes from this continued behavior.

I\'m not too hopeful that the JC A&P will stick around for too long. Maybe another year.

First of all, I think it automatically made the first round of avoiding closure simply because A&P invested pretty heavily in revamping this location a few years ago (2 or 3 years ago?).

Secondly, their sales must be down since Target expanded their grocery selection last year.

Finally, the eye-ball test. I\'ve never regularly shopped at a grocery store that had so few customers milling around in the store. The place is just dead.

Your facts are not correct.

First. The capital improvement involved a lot money that is already depreciated. There were desirable lease concessions gained which is why the costs are a little less right now. The capital costs are completely sunk at this point. The capital improvement they had 4 to 5 years ago (yes time flies) is a not a factor in a decision to stay open.

Second. Their sales are down, but in line with their other units. (Shoprite sales in Jersey City are also down 2-7% depending on who you believe.) A Target did not open near each of their other stores. Their sales are down because they can\'t put carriages into customers hands. They have lines at peak times. Nothing makes them special compared to other supermarket chains. They have integrity problems with their customers, investors, employees and vendors. These factors are contributing to their declining sales. Here in JC I prefer them over Shoprite not because they are good but because I think our local Shoprite is horrible.

Third. Ever been there on a Sunday afternoon??? That store is doing $150,000 each day on the weekend while making huge mistakes. The potential of that location is at least 40-60% above that number. There are many things they could do during the week especially at night to improve sales.

The biggest threats to the JC A&P may come if (and probably when) the West New York and Bayonne stores close causing employee job transitioning hurting customer service. The inevitable pay cut that the union is negotiating with senior management isn\'t going to help employee morale much either. The potential Lackawanna 96,000 sq ft unit big box proposal may also factor in this mix somehow.

For now. The list of 32 stores is called the "Initial Closing List" in the legal filings.

The industry buzz is that they are trying to sell some of the NJ/NY metro area stores as a package. The Jersey City store would be one of the more desirable units of such a package deal. This is the only reason the West New York and Bayonne stores were saved. There is expected to be at least one or two more waves of closing stores over the next six months.

With their reorganization they may close the West New York location and/or that big white elephant down in Bayonne. The stores in Hoboken and JC will probably be ok unless they are sold, and I do not know if Whole Foods is interested in any of those locations right now.

According to several employees they have a new produce mgr at the JC A&P. I guess the guy came from the less busy WNY store. He didn't order enough then his wife went into labor. The managers tried to get an emergency order in but because of the holiday it got delayed.

Was just in there and it looked pretty good all around. As previously mentioned I prefer them to Shoprite but avoid them on Sunday when its crazy and understaffed in there.

Negotiations have already been happening. There have been a few rumours but I've heard nothing that can really be reported as fact yet. There may be problem with the proposed footprint of the building. Keep an eye out for changes to a construction blueprint.

There is also a concern that there will be no foot traffic (or "undesirable" foot traffic) at this location. This glorified strip mall needs a volume anchor to make the other units more attractive to rent, which I'm sure is a fact not lost on the developers.

They seem to see it as a public service: "Pathmark ... is particularly noted for its historical commitment to opening stores within the inner cities of its trading area."

http://www.aptea.com/pathmark.asp

That is PR.....A&P (GAP) purchased Pathmark less than 2 years ago because they thought they could almost immediately sell a large portion to Kroger. Kroger immediately realized the extreme debt load A&P took on to purchase Pathmark. A&P absolutely needed to make a deal strengthening Kroger's bargaining position. Both companies got stubborn. A&P went through 3 Ceos and a CFO and that is where the situation is today.

Its a big box store that will probably be flattened in twenty years to make room for more high rise towers. There is nothing iconic about it. It is not special. Vague associations with 9/11 does not make something magical. Even if A&P vacated, another store would move in. Sentimentality for bland, universal architecture is unwarranted.

The shame of it all is that the chain has become exactly what you say it is now. Bland and unremarkable. A&P used to be huge. My own father worked there for his first job back in the fifties, as did many people.

They were amoung the first to use refrigerated rail cars and many other innovations that changed the industry and American life. In fact their world headquarters was down by the warehouse district here in Jersey City for a decade or so.

Your point is valid. They WERE iconic.

PROBLEM #1: The A&P has no unique selling proposition. There is nothing that distinguishs them from the rest of the options consumers may make. (here in JC I personally prefer them because the folks at Shoprite, in my experience are just so damn rude)

PROBLEM#2: They have lost integrity with customers. They have lost integrity with vendors. They have lost integrity with investors. They have lost integrity with employees.

disclosure: I am a retail analyst and personally know people that work at the Jersey City A&P.

The A&P in Jersey City is actually one of the healthier units in the company. This means it would also be one of the most desirable stores for an outside company to purchase. Its location is an ideal footprint for several grocers that are looking to come into the area. Recently the company has sold 7 units in Conn. for apx 25 million and four Pathmark units for apx 89 million. The company has a long history of selling pieces of itself to survive. A&P under chapter 11 will be attempting to package stores like this one with other less desirable units.
Although this unit might transfer operation or ownership it is unlikely to close for good. However the closure of other units may have a huge impact on our Jersey City A&P. Other union employees (UFCW local 464A) with more years of seniority are likely to bump the present employees of Jersey City forcing them to become unemployed.

This guy is very well known in the area with the street name "Wally"......Virtually every merchant in the area knows this piece of work as do the police. He has a "boosting route" and has hit everyone from the mall pet store to Target. He has been arrested at the A&P for stealing shrimp and put his hands on an employee there. He has threatened to kick my a$$ on a number of occasions and has always backed down...probably because he knows that am able to hurt him very bad. He acts crazy but is not as crazy as he acts. One of the real reasons he went to prison recently is because he threatened a police officer. Basically he is a cockroach that has been tolerated for entirely too long.

Shoprite maybe good for center store/grocery items but their other depts are horrible with regards to quality. The A&P in Jersey City and Hoboken are both trending well ahead of their company averages with 2-4% sales decreases. The store in JC would be one of the last of 500 to ever get closed. The JC Shoprite is trending almost 7% down in sales and that is a fact. I know folks in both stores and have seen the numbers with my own eyes. Target's grocery expansion has taken a small piece of both stores............................... A&P has been trying to sell off most of Pathmark for over a year without any success. A&P has had three CEOs in less than a year and Wall Street confidence in the company is bad. The company is owned by holding corporations whose own executives have been rumoured to be shorting the stock on a constant basis. There is no long term plan or company vision. The company has a long history of contraction to avoid financial collapse. Personally I believe this company may be a candidate for a leveraged buy out. Time will tell.
