I was not my intention to "dig up" anything about Manville, which I never heard of before today, or the surrounding areas. I do not like or dislike the people of Manville, since I do not know them, nor I do not think it appropriate to lump them all together on the basis of one individual's attitudes, namely yours. It was only to illustrate that one can find miscreants almost anywhere.

I am sure you may not be aware of this, but Hudson County has 2 Walmarts and even a Kmart which you are probably too stuck up to shop at anywhere. Wow. I guess you didn't hear about the 2 men who strangled and bashed some woman in her own drive way in Bridgewater - and guess what? None of them came from Newark or even non-downtown Jersey City! Too bad someone didn't test your parents before they were allowed to reproduce.

Hey asshole, do you think things in Greenville would be any better if Manzo, Levin or one of the others got elected? Do you know how to move out half of Jersey City's population elsewhere? Because that's the only solution to the problem. Greenville is a freakin zoo, rationality does not apply there. Nothing proactive can be done there short of heavily infusing the drinking water with some lead and hoping that sterilizes most of the population. I bet things would improve even in our "impenetrable" downtown, since most problems migrate to us from other sections of JC or Newark.

Why don't you do us all a favor and migrate back to west Jersey where you came from. You probably moved here to piss of your parents and impress your hick buddies with how "tough" you must be to move to JC.

Many years ago my father-in-law put out a small metal can next to the tree in front of his house for people to drop their garbage in, since they would throw it around the tree. Next thing we knew, a neighbor had complained about the trash can out when it wasn't garbage day - and a nice ticket to go along with that complaint. He had to pay the ticket.

Same one was flying right over my yard in Bergen Lafayette (near McGinley Square) this afternoon. Also one of those little propeller planes buzzing us for the last few days...going around in circles...for a at least an hour at a time in the morning-noon. It seems to go around the Beacon then over McGinley Square, south then back around. Any ideas on that one?

from 20 years ago:

http://www.nytimes.com/1989/06/26/nyr ... ey-city.html?pagewanted=1

From the New York Times 1989

"At the Whitney Young School on Dwight Street in the Bergen-Lafayette section here, chromium crystals have been common, apparently for years, on cafeteria and classroom walls.

A former teacher at the school, Kathrine Burno, recalls first noticing the clusters on walls in the basement gym and cafeteria and in her first-floor classroom in 1973, a year after the school was built."

This is sometimes helpful. I've used it successfully 3 times. You can also attach photos to whatever complaint you are emailing them about. They cleaned up the outside of a burnt out apartment building (piles of trash in vestibule and on sidewalk) and sent the owners the bill.

Gentrification means replacing the decay and crime in a neighborhood with renovation and safer streets. People of all colors can participate in this process. Your ethnic characterization of the process is malicious.

Stani, that is how it should be, but that is not always what happens - and there are many who would like to see the existing residents pushed out - at least those who don't fit the new "profile." Before Hoboken became "gentrified" a lot of it mysteriously burnt down thereby removing many tenants. Then the brick buildings were gutted and renovated, and voila, brand new condos. Of course, not all but some of them.

Giving out drivers licenses and tuition to those in the country illegally is just wrong. The question is not whether these people are good, bad, hardworking or lazy, or their potential wage earning status, etc. The operative term here is "illegal". Welcome to legal immigrants. Those that are not entering legally are breaking the law, which they are fully aware of. They are know the chances they are taking. They should not be rewarded for that. This state is in a financial hole as it is and we shouldn't have to pay for this too.

I was working in the Trust Company when they were shooting scenes in the Canton for movie. All the dressing rooms (those RV kind of things) were parked along Bergen Ave in front of the bank and down the street towards the C-Town. People in the departments upstairs were hanging out the windows taking pictures. I never saw such a happy group of employees!

I like Pathmark better than the ShopRite so I drive to the other on 440 since I am inconvenienced by the shopping carts, the holes in the parking lot and the dismal cashier situation. The Grand Street Pathmark's shortcomings are indicative of the way that area has been treated for years. Many residents, especially in Ward F, feel frustrated and neglected when it comes to amenities and services. Of course, many of us are productive and law abiding citizens, but as we know, we are not usually what gets all the attention. As for driving to some other town to shop I would not waste my time driving to some other city - unless for my favorite Black Currant jam which sadly no one sells around here anymore. I can manage to find nutritious food for my family locally.

It is unfair for those who cannot shop anywhere else to have to endure those conditions at the Grand Street Pathmark, however. Or do without a post office, or a bus for that matter.

From what I have observed, folks are not too vigilant about returning their carts anywhere - even the Shop Rite

what i meant was, if you can get this irritated/motivated to see change over something as trivial as parking lot shopping cart bollards, to the point where you post here about them and contact the store's headquarters... well maybe focus that energy other places. it seems like a waste of energy. there are a lot of other problems to get involved in changing. and if you are already involved, thats great! but you seem to have enough energy to get mad about bollards, imagine what can be accomplished with that energy and focus in an area that really NEEDS improvement!

What is trivial to some might be important to others. I have sat at meetings where a dog run issue has taken up 2 hours of everyone's time. Like I said I am fed up with disparity here in Jersey City. It's getting worse by the day.
It is truly incovenient and don't worry this is an issue that our community will soon address. We have lost 2 major bus lines in the last year, we have lost a major post office, we have to spend more time than usual at a low end supermarket, all of downtown's affordable housing is being built in our area instead of keeping it over that way, I can go on an on. We have strong community groups but in areas where a lot of people are not financially sound such as Bergen Lafayette, we get the short hand of the stick. This is not crying, but if you haven't lived here for more than 30 years you wouldn't know and if would be just trivial.
These are major quality of life issues that we will continue to push at city hall...believe me I don't just type words here.

You are not kidding. Many things are ignored until your neighborhood starts to take an "upturn" namely when upper incomes start moving into the area. Its a shame for all the honest working people who have lived here forever. Notice our mayor doesn't even seem to know the downtown Pathmarke even exists, although you can see the Beacon from its crater-filled parking lot:

(from the NY Times) As Mr. Healy put it: ?We have a dearth of supermarkets. We have downtown, one in the east end of our city, but nothing in Journal Square,? and nothing near the site of the Beacon.

I guess he forgot about the lovely C-Town also. Or am I imagining that is in Journal Square?

There used to be a few pheasants in the park. I used to see them a few years ago, but not in the last couple of years. I really hope they are back. This is pretty close to the bird I used to see at LSP:

There also used to be 2 Guinea Hens (I suppose someone let them loose) that lived by the Interpretive Center, but I heard they met a terrible demise. I used to photograph them often, they were my favorites.

This link may prove helpful. It shows the "report cards" for various Jersey City Schools. If your area school does not comply with the No Child Left Behind proficiency guidlines, and is termed a "school in need of improvement" I believe you are entitled to apply to a school that does depending on a vacancy being available. Many Jersey City schools are termed in need of improvement so good luck!

I wonder, as someone living here nearly 30 years, which defininition of pioneer do you most closely associate with yourself? No need for all the drama -- it's a very common term for a gentrifier, but I'm guessing you already know that. Say whatever you want about gentrification, but I think most people who are coming into this area are not trying to force anyone out, expect for the assholes who break into cars. Oh, and the people who don't clean up after their dogs.

You are correct, I do know what it means, however I've seen far more dramatic stuff here than little ol' me. But I always find the term vaguely offensive somehow. I do agree as to the dog poop problem. As for the butt-wipes who break into the cars, I think most are junkies/opportunists looking for a promising target. As for "Hobokenization" I don't want it - too homogeneous. It has an odd, Invasion of the Body Snatchers feel to it.... When I moved to Jersey City it was diverse and cheap! : ) I felt comfortable and stayed.

The reason I make the correction is GrovePath often puts the wrong neighborhood. It is not Bergen/Laffayette though, the northern border of BL is part Grand street and part of Communipaw.

Sadly this time, Grovepath is correct. And McGinley Sq. (which is a district not a ward) is on the border of B&L and JSQ (they are wards). Bergen Lafayette extends to Mongomery st. to the north. For all of us geography buffs, I suggest this link to identify the 6 wards of JC (A,B,C,D,E,F) more easily. You have to zoom in on the map to get the ward boundaries.
