Re: The loud motorcycle tearing through Downtown this morning

Just can't stay away

As a motorcyclist, I'm bothered, embarrassed and upset every time (and it is often) I hear another idiot with straight pipes. Not having mufflers is illegal and offensive, at 3am or any other time, in a city, suburb or in the country. Unfortunately straight pipes are everywhere. JC, Hoboken, the city, where ever you go there is this crap. The law is simply not enforced.

Motorcycling is fraught with dangers and riders are frequently unseen or misunderstood. Pissing other people off, waking them up, causing ear damage in self and others is a battle we can't win.

Just seeing this thread... +100 to Jeebus and Benedict. I'm a rider as well and I think the illegality of straight pipes should be enforced, they have no right to disturb people (and give other riders a bad reputation while doing so).

For those morons who say loud pipes save lives... If you're so safety conscious, how come I never see the straight pipe crowd with even a tiny bit of safety gear? They are the last people to use proper helmets, proper armor, proper reflective colors but the first to cry safety when told off for their obnoxious loud pipes (that they do nothing but cruise around in). If they are not compensating for something, I don't know who is.

We just went back to La Rustique after a long while (it's a drive for us now that we live in Paulus Hook)... Had a plain, a mushroom and a pepperoni. Thin crust and spot on. Loved it as usual...

This seems to be a real event and a serious one. However, there are some questions to be answered. How do they know who it is? Regardless, must have been highly traumatic for the victims. Armed robbery in your residence at 4pm?!?

It is just atrocious. Quite simply some owners think they can get away with it. It's completely intentional. Just see it after a snow melt.. Ugh.

A corollary is people whose dogs are off leash in public areas. When my girlfriend and I are out running, we have to keep watch, slow down, make sure to keep the dogs calm. Why? Why is it our responsibility and not the owners'? We love dogs just as anyone else, but off leash outside of your private property or a specified dog run is just not acceptable. You are ruining other people's evenings. Even if your dog has not charged, the runner/stroller walker/etc, all had to be wary and adjust their behaviour and not be as relaxed due to YOUR irresponsibility.

Just went back tonight after several months (had been there when they'd first opened).

Service and restaurant in general seems to have settled down. The lamb was excellent, the lentil soup was good, and the baklava was surprisingly good as well with lots of pistachio on it. Coffee was good. So overall a good experience, and I know my Turkish food.

If I had to nit pick, I would say the cauliflower/broccoli garnishes to the mains were a bit cold, not quite right.

I like the warm, friendly feel of the place. I'll continue to frequent.

Third Taqueria's chicken soup! But their other soup (some kind of pork intestine thingie) really didn't do it for me.

Also love the lentil soup at Two Aprons (call them as it's not available at all times). Rumi might also have ok soup, as Turkish soup is quite good.

If you have family, consider Maplewood and surrounding areas. If you are single or part of a younger couple, JC or Hoboken would be perfect, with JC having the slight edge for driving ease and parking options.

I have had nothing but good experiences there.. I am happy to pay a couple of buck for someone to take care/help with wrapping packages. Once, some time back, he helped out with very difficult items as well, a whole set of tires that I was shipping out!

It takes 1 second to turn on a car/ambulance/whatever. That one second can be combined with the few seconds that the same ambulance driver takes to put his/her belt on (they certainly don't idle around belted in).

It is pure bad habits and disregard for energy waste/air quality, nothing else... Let's stop making excuses.

This is terrible, but unfortunately deeply engrained in "cheap fuel" American culture. People even idle their private vehicles, but officials driving state cars (police, fire, etc) are the worst offenders. How long does it take to start up a car these days? A fraction of a second. Is that ambulance there really in a state of emergency all those hours? The state law is 3 minutes but provides handy exceptions to official folk:

As a cyclist/runner and general park user, I'm actually UNHAPPY about this. Yes, I got a flat tire once from that gravelly bit and my girlfriend took a tumble once, but in the end this will ruin the quiet, ped/cyclist only entrance to the park... Jersey Ave being a dead end at Grand makes it a godsend for that whole stretch for non-automotive traffic.

Goodbye bushes and peace, hello exhaust fumes and aggressive driving...

I had Two Aprons cater a couple of trays of sandwiches for my World Cup party... It worked out wonderfully. I did have to pick up, as they deliver on foot and carrying trays is not easy, but it was on time. I really only eat one or two sandwiches from their menu, so I added some of the owner's suggestions that I had not tried before and was impressed. So were my hungry friends.

As I posted above, I am an F1 fan, but that doesn't mean LSP is an acceptable venue. It is a PARK, it would be ruined, the fledgling plant/animal life would be ruined.

There are racetracks for this sort of thing. Many of them. They have the infrastructure to handle the toxicity and the parking etc. LSP is not the place...

I am thinking of joining FOLSP. I agree with them regarding the planned 9/11 memorial. I actually am not a huge fan of even APW being held there, even if I liked most of the bands. But that is by far the least disruptive.

While F1 is fun to watch on TV, there is NO reason whatsoever (or ROOM for that matter) to put it in LSP. That will literally be the end of the park as we know it. Has to be stopped and I can't imagine it will fly... What about the animal/plant life? How would NY'ers feel about Central Park being ruined?

If it really needs to be in the Northeast US, put it inland, far away from population, perhaps on a sort of toxic site. Hey there are places like that, they are called racetracks!

I was away in 08, biked over to glimpse a couple of the shows in 09. Also I could hear when white rabbits/percussion gun came on from my living room, that was fun.

Nice to have it so close and a great venue... However, the damage to the park grounds is severe. If you look at the vegetation/roads, LSP still hasn't fully recovered from last August (and that's 8 months on). I'd be ok if it happened somewhere else (or not at all).

Funny, I had been commenting on this thread a few days ago. On Monday evening, we went for a walk in the park. Not running (as I've given up on running in this de facto dog park). Yesterday, I noticed a smell in my apartment's entry area. Sure enough, the shoes I used to walk in this park have some dog shit smeared on their bottom. Why don't people pick up? I was already on edge walking, paying as much attention as I can, but some places have long grass. Is that an excuse to not pick up? Just like snow is an excuse not to pick up?

I'm sick and tired of the dog owners of this town who abuse the relative freedom/anonymity/space that JC offers.

Grrr.

Cars drive too fast on these streets period. BUT a slow rolling stop can be safe (and it's much more energy efficient). This US obsession with COMPLETE stops is wasteful on time, energy and not necessarily safer. I recommend folks to read the newly out 'Traffic' book to put some biases to rest.

Tommy, you're right, even as a fan, I'd say, they are rather slow. For those of us in the neighborhood, it doesn't matter much, a way to unwind and run into people... However, if I'm working from home or in a hurry, I call my sandwich order in advance, then show up 10-15mins later. Works like a charm.

I like dogs in general but the off-leash dogs are a real problem there. That the peninsula has become a de facto dog park excludes other users (who are actually obeying the law).

I'm a runner and used to make that park part of my evening routine... Not anymore, dogs chase runners, especially in the dark when they're feeling threatened. So I found that I had to really adjust/slow down around dogs that are already excited from being around other dogs. If I had kids, I'd be livid.

Just wanted to a put a note out to give props to these guys!

Last week, I finally decided to convert my hard-core mountain bike to something more city-friendly (different seat, higher handlebar etc). They turned it around in a day. Motivated, friendly folks are a pleasure to deal with, I'm very happy to have a real bike shop right in the middle of town!
