I printed out the pic. My dog and I put in a fair amount of miles around there. We'll be on the lookout.

Just can't stay away

When my wife and I moved to JC a few months ago, we had a few priorities. One was to get involved in some sort of volunteer position in the local community and one was to get a dog (since we were moving to a house with a yard instead of the little San Francisco apartments we?d been in). We got a dog (from Liberty). And we?re now volunteering (at Liberty).

I haven?t been to every animal shelter in the world, and I haven?t met everyone at Liberty, but the people who I have the most contact with (croft, Allison and Brian) are all remarkable people. They are remarkable because I?ve spent some time at Liberty and I?ve heard the phone ringing and ringing and ringing and I see the people come in through the door who ask questions like ?If there are any vicious dogs that are gonna get put down can we take them for free instead?? and I hear Liberty talking to landlords who say that the dog their tenant adopted will have to be returned to the shelter because his tenants cannot have dogs and I watch these people deal with the craziness of shelter life while still being kind and compassionate towards the animals they care for. You know how you sometimes punch the computer or the dashboard or throw the wrench or kick the door? Well, these people can?t do that, because the things they work with all day are not inanimate objects. And they know that.

And I?ve met scores of great volunteers, too. People who drive to Liberty from an hour away because they know the shelter and the people and they know that Liberty gets a lot of dogs that people think are worthless and they know that those dogs aren?t worthless. Instead of spending their weekends at the beach, they spend their weekends cleaning dog poop out of cages. And they aren't even serving community service. Go figure.

If you?re a pet person, great. If you?re not a pet person, you can still click on croft?s link and register and vote when the voting happens in a couple of months. My nom de zootoo is karlthepianist, should you be simply dying to find out what is going on in my life petwise.

All right. I?ve said my peace. I know that JCList is full of people asking for help for various and sundry causes, most of them quite legit and quite beneficial for our city in the long run. I know that. Do what you can. If you can do this, great.

We?ve only been here a few months, but we?re really glad to have attached ourselves to Liberty. It?s not a high-end fancy-schmancy carbon fiber shelter, and the animals there are not high-end fancy-schmancy pedigree animals, but the people there are high-end people, that?s for sure.

Cheese labs. We just bought a place here in JC, and our real estate agent didn't mention this was a haven for underground cheesers. Now I know why my basement smells vaguely of cheddar and the owner was so desperate to sell. How do you clean up a former cheese lab? Should I get some mice?

Wood Floor Refinishers

We're moved in to our new place in Lincoln Park, and I thought I'd share a couple of numbers of contractors who were fantastic. The first is KBJ Wood Flooring, Inc. They are in Elizabeth at 1-800-825-1498. The owner, Jack, is pretty surly sometimes on the phone, and when his crew got here I spent all this time going through all of the various repairs, etc. on our parquet floors, and they seemed rather bored with my monologues.

So I was concerned at their seeming lack of interest in my particular floor opinions. Then I left the place and they did a better job than I could have even imagined with parquet repairs, etc. They did an amazing job between the spindles on the stairs and got completely under the radiators.

In summary, I suppose they knew more about floors than me and had already seen the problems I pointed out to them a billion times and knew how to deal with those problems without my "help." I repeat, the job they did was amazing.

The estimates we got were between $1900 and $2500, and they came in at $2250.

Completely off topic, does anyone know where I can get two 18-way cable TV splitters?

Had a recommendation for Ken Stiefel from our house inspector. Gave us an estimate (single family colonial near Journal Square) that was pricey (about 10 grand), but there is a fair amount of work to be done. That includes tearing out a roof over about the first third of the house and putting a new one down with new gutters, etc, and having to do a fair amount of repair work on a slate roof, so the estimate is not outside the realm of reason. I know an extra couple grand now paid for the right roofer/installation/materials could save me a lot of money down the road on roofs and headache pills. Rather a great $10k job now than a $5k job I have to call him out seven times to redo. Any thoughts on him? Thanks.

Any thoughts about built-in gutters vs. K gutters would be most welcome as well.

What's wrong with muppets?

Yeah. Don't be hatin' on Muppets. Muppets are an American treasure, like jazz. The Muppet "Danny Boy" vid on YouTube is priceless.

We used Cynthia Hadjiyannis- 201.876.6568. She was most responsive and was great about making sure we had all the documentation from the seller for various and sundry things we knew little about (old oil tank decommissioning, etc). Best of luck.

Great Home Inspector

I figure that once we start tearing our new place apart I'm gonna be checking this topic out quite a bit, so I'll offer what I can now.

Home inspector. Good one. He looked at two places for us and tore them apart. He analyzed all sorts of things that I would never think to look at, he was clear about what was a real problem as opposed to just a headache, he gave us a list of what sort of things the sellers should provide us with in terms of documentation, etc.

He does the big three- inspection, Radon and WDI. He gave us a gigantic report on both places, with tons of color pictures, recommendations about how to remedy any problems, etc. I really, really recommend him. His name is Robert Fico and he's at acehomeinspection.com or 908-232-8909.

My wife noticed this and she got pretty pumped. There were a couple of places like this in San Francisco. She met some cool people there who were very kindly with knitting advice, from needle choice to technical tutorials.

Now, I'm not really familiar with the term "Hipster." Wikipedia says 'hipsterism fetishizes the authentic? elements of all of the ?fringe movements of the postwar era?Beat, hippie, punk, even grunge,? and draws on the ?cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity? and ?gay style?, and then ?regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity? and a sense of irony. These people have defanged, skinned and consumed? all of these influences ?into a repertoire of meaninglessness?.'

Since all of the people at these knitting places were like 90, I do not believe they could be considered hipsters. So my guess is that while knitting could become a fad for a while, if it's a friendly place, the hardcore knitters will still be clacking their wooden needles together long after it isn't the "now" place to be.

Business Printers

Just moved from San Francisco. Anyone know someone who can actually print business cards? I had a bit of an experience with someone who worked at a big office supply store called, let's say, Thumbtacks.

ME: Hi, I looked on the web site to get all the specs, and I have an image for you.
THUMBTACKS GUY: Okay.
ME: This image is the right size for a business card.
THUMBTACKS GUY: Okay.
ME: This image is the right shape for a business card.
THUMBTACKS GUY: Okay.
ME: This image is the right format for a business card.
THUMBTACKS GUY: Okay.
ME: This image is the right resolution for a business card.
THUMBTACKS GUY: Okay.
ME: Great!
THUMBTACKS GUY: Great!
ME: So, I?d like to have some business cards printed.
THUMBTACKS GUY: HEY! WHOA WHOA WHOA! Business cards?
ME: Uh, like it says on the sign over your head.
THUMBTACKS GUY: Hey, I didn?t put that sign there.

Sigh. I'd appreciate any recommendations.

I second r_pinkowitz (or maybe i'm thirding or fourthing by now). Pizza Masters is pretty good.

However, we just moved from San Francisco, where the very best pizza is really not so great, so it may take my taste buds some time to be able to discriminate between good and bad pizza on the greater NYC area pizza stage.
