This is really sad. I don't think there's anything naive about a woman who is alone in her car being startled by a man who suddenly appears at her window. I'd guess the bobo in paradise who criticized Amy as naive wouldn't have bothered if the interloper were a hungover Hoboken fratjock who strayed from his stomping grounds the night before and needed change for the light rail - that wouldn't have given her an opportunity to demonstrate her superior moral sensibilities.
And what's with the casual Barcelona name-drop? Ahh wait, I get it: vanity couldn't let you resist adding a little international flair to give the elitism some context (hint: the developers of Grove Pointe tried that too, with the extra "e," and it only made them look like suburban people who have yet to apply for their first passport).

Anyone who grew up in the Heights remember the guy on New York Ave. (I think just after Franklin St. going towards Ravine) who used to paint slogans in white paint on the outside of his building, usually about evil Republicans? I have no doubt he was more than a bit crazy, but it sure made the neighborhood more interesting.

Not surprised this thread has no responses. The type of residents people here twitter about are usually lowbrow celebrities like Mos Def or Queen Latifah.
This guy was loyal to his home city despite the fact that practically all of his colleagues in the snobfest NY publishing circles wouldn't get caught dead in JC. I'd have been a helluva a lot more proud to have Mr. Giroux as a neighbor than Michelle Rodriguez (and I'd feel much safer since he probably didn't pack a gun like some of the aforementioned).

This brings back fine memories of my days in the Heights, grabbing a jitney to Port Authority every morning from Palisades Ave. You never knew what you were getting into, vans w/holes in the floor and leaky mufflers, the driver's son in the front seat holding a screwdriver against the radio to improve reception of a far-away soccer game, ass-pinching springs barely restrained by duct-taped upholstery... Makes taking the PATH seem like first class.

A month or so ago I was home during the daytime and parcel post rang my buzzer to deliver a package. I was so shocked I thought it must've been some kind of scam and when the delivery guy arrived at my door he'd be a Jehovah's Witness, or something.
As it was, this was the first time in my ten years living downtown that parcel post had attempted to actually deliver a package to me. Always in the past they simply pasted those yellow stickers to my door and I had to shlep to the post office on Sat. mornings, stand at that window in the back where the workers ignore you for a minimum of five minutes no matter how many times you clear your throat or say "excuse me" to the woman eating a dingdong and staring at a speck on the ceiling. Since my wife works from home I know that they're not attempting to make deliveries, and I've sort of resigned myself for paying extra to have UPS or Fedex as carrier whenever I buy something online.

What's the deal with people falling asleep on the PATH? I rarely get a seat but whenever I do it seems the guy next to me falls asleep a few minutes after the train pulls out of the 33rd St. station. And his head tilts so that it's leaning on my shoulder, whereupon I have to cough or move to jar him awake, and of course he apologizes but two minutes later he's back in the honeymoon position, meaning that the entire ride consists of me jerking my body like a spastic, coughing, and wishing I'd stood.

While I didn't mean to imply that LHN was in the boonies, it is too isolated for my tastes at $500k+ for a 1BR unit. It may be a great walk to Exchange on a pleasant morning from LHN, but if you have to make that walk every night in the Winter it's not much fun... I did it for years from Essex & Warren St. and on cold days w/the always heavy winds it can be surprisingly difficult. Many such nights I had to stop for relief, in the form of a glass of Jameson's, at the Light Horse, otherwise I'd have never made it home I've commuted into Manhattan from the burbs (car to park & ride, bus to Port Authority, subway to office), from the Heights (99s or marshrutka to Port Authority, subway to office), and for the last 9 years from Paulus Hook (PATH to WTC and more recently, PATH to 33rd). I love to bitch about the PATH, but over this time I've become strongly averse to having to rely on more than one form of transportation - in addition to the PATH - to get to and from work. Yeah, probably I'm a bit anal about it but I've spent too much of my life on buses, broken down jitneys, and subway platforms and there are just too many ways to be delayed when you add another link to your commute.

$1/2 million for a 1BR is a "decent price" in a neighborhood that is certainly up and coming but will be years before arrival? Plus it's more than a stroll to the Grove PATH and you'd have to rely on the light rail to get to Exchange - unless you use the Turnpike each day to commute, it's hardly as convenient as lower-priced options east. My wife and I looked at LHN and it was impressive. I particularly loved the building facades and technology, but the two 1BRs we looked at (last Spring) were $505k and $510k. Too much, too far, and too many pushy salespeople and the on-site financier guy was greasier than a fried funnel cake fried in fried oil at Great Adventure on a hot day.

Once when I was stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Pulaski during rush hour I was stunned to find the reason for the backup was that a woman had lost a hubcap. She'd stopped her car in the right lane and by time I got abreast of her had found her dear hubcap and was walking casually back to her car. Some people are so stupid it's a wonder they are still alive.

It's good to see the usual cliches in action, though. "I'm not so wrapped up in myself I'm so out of touch, especially in these tough times." You can expand on that with the oft-cited "I'm more grounded" or "at least I'm real," for added flavor - none of which are probably true, but if it makes you feel better then knock yourself out

People use them to carry their purchases home to their apartments and then irresponsibly ditch the carts. I had a friend living in Portofino and she said some of the trashy residents wouldn't even bother to wheel the carts outside, they'd simply leave them in the hallways outside their doors as if they were room service dollies.
In response, I've noticed that the shopping carts in some places (like the A&P) have these little triggers on the wheel that lock if you hit a big bump (as in wheeling over a curb). A few times when wheeling groceries back to my car I hit breaks in the parking lot pavement and had it seize up on me. Not much fun dragging it 50 ft. to where I was parked, but I can't really blame the merchants for taking measure to protect themselves.

My wife and I looked at both Montgomery Greene and 99 Montgomery and preferred 99 Mont., hands down.
MG has better amenities like a gym and valet parking, but you pay for those in your common charges, taxes are higher (even w/the abatement), and the overall price per sf is higher. I believe MG's monthly CC for a 1BR was over $500 while 99M's was $170.

I was booted on the street I formerly lived in PH one day after my Zone 3 permit expired. One day.
I was technically in the wrong, so be it. Yet on the printed sign the parking authority dork left on my windshield, they mistakenly listed the opening of the office on Central Ave. as 30 minutes earlier than what it was. The next morning I stood outside the fenced entrance and waited while a very obese clerk drank coffee and yucked it up with her pals for 30 mins. before allowing me in. The entire setup is perfectly representative of how the PA operates - with not even the slightest regard for the residents or anyone besides their little revenue-generating schemes.

You might also want to check out 99 Montgomery, it's a condo building w/about 16 units, located a block from the post office (next to Komegashi). No doorman and no gym = very low common charges. The building's construction is great (it's a gut rehab), w/9 inches of concrete between you, your neighbors, and the outdoors. I believe there's a single unit available as there was an open house sign on the entrance over the weekend when I walked by.
My wife and I looked extensively in this area and the pickings for 1BRs below $500k are a wee bit slim, but unless she's in a hurry to move she has options. If she's willing to walk a few more blocks: Montgomery Towers is probably the most reasonably priced option, but the building is aging and the units are small. Taxes and maintenance are very low. From time to time you'll see condos in the row houses on Morris and Sussex Sts. around Van Vorst St. will pop up on the market, also older units along Grand St. The renovated brownstones are pricey ($575k and up for 1BR) but there are plenty in the $350 range. I believe Sunblossom Condos on Washington between Sussex & Morris still have available units. They're reasonable at $350k for 1BR and newly renovated, but very small. One thing she should know is that if she's intent on getting really close to the PO, beware of noise from the York St. Tavern as it can get pretty loud in the evening when they set up tables outside. I've lived in the area for 8 years and use the PO regularly. I have no problem with the PO's staff, they are a lot more friendly than staffs in NYC post offices. I do, however, hate the mail carriers with a passion.

I long ago gave up getting angry w/drivers who blow through crosswalks. Even the NJ Transit bus drivers - who are supposed to be professionals - angrily blare their horns when someone has the audacity to step into their path to use a crosswalk. I was recently in the suburban town of Roseland and noted they have big YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS signs in the middle of the street wherever there are crosswalks, which seem to work really well.

Welcome to the neighborhood and congrats on your new home!
If you stick around you'll appreciate the irony -- there are those like the whiner in this thread who (purport to) flat-out oppose gentrification and others who favor it but only on their narrow terms (the only shops "allowed" are those that cater to their demographic). My wife and I also just moved into a condo here, count us in as people who absolutely love it.

My wife and I looked at Gull's Cove a few months ago, after seeing the "homes staring at 335K" banner hanging on the building's facade. Besides a studio for that price, all the 1BRs were over 400k and 1BR + den units were in the 575k range, which to us seemed a little high. I believe we were also quoted a common charges fee that was higher than the $350 per month mentioned in the article. The clincher, however, was that I couldn't stomach subsidizing a rooftop putting green when that same space could have served more residents if it was reserved for BBQing or outdoor parties.

Not only will this protect us from subway poll grunge, we can wear our cotton gloves while walking to work. We'll instantly recognize each other as fellow pilgrilms of the PATH and exchange knowing nods -Hire some English butlers to wipe down all the polls with antiseptic between stops -Equip the PATH card readers to apply a thin coating of Purell to each card inserted. Goodbye card jams, offensive hand jam, and the lubricious coating will ensure swift passes through the turnstiles, preventing line jams.

Don't know what his story is, but I've seen him shove women to get on the train first so he can get one of the coveted corner areas between the seat rows and the doors, where he promptly sits.
