Re: Folding bicycles on PATH

I feel like there will be bikes that fly before an actual pedestrian bridge ever got built, so no I don't really care about that.

But being that bikes can't use the existing infrastructure such as the tunnels I don't see why there can be a huge complaint about people taking there folding bikes across the river on the PATH.

might as well banish the strollers, suitcases, and fat people also.

you thinking bringing a folding bike on a train is an act of rudeness is ridiculous. one of the reason people buy folding bikes (like myself) is so it takes up a smaller footprint.

also maybe if we could bike across the river in the first place, we wouldn't have to act so rude

I had bedbugs in my couch last year, worst thing ever and had no idea where they came from. Been bedbug free for a year and a half though so far (knock on wood).

In an office setting would be hellish. Bring back the DDT!

eh. I don't have a car and Shoprite is the only store I can get to with my push cart a few blocks away. I've been going there for a 4 years now and I dig it. I never really noticed the smoking, or "filthy loiterers" and kids with candy bars is kinda a usual thing being around the city and all. I will say there are vultures by the clothing bins, I have to pretty much go mission impossible to actually get my clothes in the bin without someone trying to grab em first. But I don't really blame em I guess.

As for the towing, yes that blows.

BassFace I agree with those 7 talking points and all, but I don't believe the FCC is the entity that will provide and ensure that the "internet remains open".

Just this month the FCC favored the MPAA and Cable TV companies to shut off outputs on set top boxes. How "open" is that?

I think this should be less about the politicians and more industry experts joining in the debate and coming to a compromise.

Net Neutrality is really a lose/lose situation.
You either have the ISP's controlling broadband or the FCC. Basically the FCC will regulate ISP's the same way they do phone networks. It's not as black and white as politicians selling out to cable giants. The FCC in control to me seems like a lot more red tape to go through than the cable companies being in control. So go ahead sign the petition if you rather the FCC be the regulator.

But personally won't sign anything until I see an actual plan of action from the FCC instead of bullet points that favor their cause.

they'll do it, but with tip it will probably be around $60...it is as previously mentioned around $45-$50 from downtown just to cross the river.

I am getting FIOS installed next saturday and can't wait to make the call to Comcast to cancel. They have been charging me for a cable modem rental for the last 2 years and I have been totally unsuccessful in getting the charge taken off or reimbursed after many a phone calls and emails. I am sure they will try to charge me $75 for breaking my contract but at least I have leverage to throw back at them with my cable modem bill. My main complain with them is the lack of HD channels with only a dozen or so channels added in the last 4 years since I've had them. They keep advertising all their HD capability but it is only on demand and since I use cablecards that's pointless to me.

FIOS is cheaper for me and under no contract with more HD and equivalent or faster internet speed without the download cap.

I've gotten car services from downtown from fulton to downtown JC and it was around $60-$65. They charge insanely just for crossing the river. So unless I can expense it with work, I just take cabs to WTC then take the PATH.

well I guess the main reason is because the cable company invested in the infrastructure in the area to lay the cable. so the cable companies own the lines, why would they let a competitor use them also?

the only saving grace people are gonna have is government maintained lines (don't want) or a low cost crazy huge provider coming in (google)

I think IPTV is the way to go.

nice i'm at 217 gigs. this data cap is stupid and archaic, especially in the world of HD video. what's the point of building your network to be faster if the bandwidth limits become smaller, does FIOS have data caps like this?

i'm still wondering what the "we are upgrading your service, expect downtime" letter that was on my door meant. so far there is no new HD and just a guy in the lobby tryin to sell comcast service cause FIOS is takin over.

nice, I was hoping that was it, there have been 10 trucks parked here also so I figured somethin was goin on. I just signed a damn contract with comcast also, I think it is $75 to break it....it might actually be worth it and maybe Verizon can give comcast contract breakers a deal or something.

funny enough there was a note on my door saying there will be service interruption with comcast because they are switching us over to the new system...hopefully that means more HD (though doubtful)

I'm 29 so I don't really hang with the teens.
My aim wasn't to solely defend teens, it was to question the notion that the only way to deal with the situation is to house arrest all teens based on what hours of the day it is.

I don't feel too bad about wasted keystrokes either, actually making every keystroke count towards some productive end is way too laborious.

More cameras and being able to get some food past 11pm, maybe the kids are pissed off they can't eat out. I know I am, but not enough that I am gonna tag a car or smash a window or anything.

Even if it is a teenager tagging, you think a curfew would actually stop them in the first place? (obviously it isn't). If they aren't worried about getting caught tagging, then they sure won't be worried about getting busted by a curfew law.

I hung out in public places at that age with friends past 10pm..it's kinda a normal thing. Not every kid out at night is looking to terrorize the city.

Hey GrovePath,
I love that documentary, I actually have "not being able to create art they will not understand art" tattooed.

I have yet to see enough real hard data on curfews deterring juvenile crime, well at least enough hard data to put all kids in a city on house arrest and challenge the constitution. Of course this is already law here and the city is making money off and I guess most people here are seemingly comfortable with it, so it's kinda a mute point.

Well there ya go, guess the police aren't doing their jobs rounding up the youth of jersey city so parents can raise their kids properly.

Didn't Paterson try to pass an adult curfew at one time? I know everyone loves the business curfew.

I always found curfews a pretty annoying concept in a "free" country such as ours. Doesn't really solve the problem though of behavior, but I guess it hides it.

Re: VERIZON FIOS

Just can't stay away

from Engadget..
"You might think that if only Verizon's FiOS service was available in your area, then life would be nearly perfect. And although FiOS offers some of the fatest internet in the US as well as some of the highest quality HD and a fantastic selection, it isn't all rosy over there. In fact the service has been riddled with billing issues since its launch in 2005 and in order to take advantage of some of the great promotional offers, you're forced to sign a two year contract. Up until January 16th 2010, that ETF has been $179, and according to DSL Reports on the 17th, that fee is set to go up to $360. That's not it though, as Verizon is expected to raise the price of services another $10 or $20 a month. You can of course avoid this by not signing a contract and going month to month, but of course this'll only work out saving you money if you end up canceling, and really if you had fiber to your home do you really think you'd cancel? Us either. Regardless, if you were thinking of switching to FiOS or taking advantage of a new promotion, we wouldn't waste any time getting it before the terms change next week. And as always be sure to read the fine print before signing anything."

I talked to my doorman this morning. Someone left a backpack with a laptop in it outside the door. They had the robot out and everything, apparently the guy's laptop got trashed in the process :)

Remember the good ole days when you could just forget a laptop in a bag and it would just get stolen and not freak out a city.

All emergency services were parked in the parking lot by the gate. Probably wouldn't of noticed it if you went out the main door of building 1.

I was going to work and the elevators were all shut down, I walk downstairs and there are cops directing us out the back exit. Police department, fire department and the bomb squad and I was running late for a meeting so didn't have a chance to stick around and see what was up. Anyone got any info?
