If you are a bigot, it might not surprise you.

Regarding Trump, his claim that "thousands and thousands" celebrated in Jersey City is a damnable lie. That doesn't surprise me.

Donald Trump is a pathological liar. I was in downtown Jersey City on 9/11. I saw the second plane hit the South Tower. I stood on the waterfront with thousands of others. There was no cheering. Horror, stunned silence, yes. "Thousands and thousands" cheering? No. Didn't happen. Trump is an odious charlatan, lying again, in an attempt to use fear mongering and hatred for his own political advantage. The man is an absolute disgrace.

The old saying, attributed to Sinclair Lewis should be amended to: ?When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving a cross and sporting a comb-over.?

The critical point is indeed that the rest of the Republican presidential clown car has remained silent in the face of Trump's ravings.

We had a drink and a bite at the bar. It is a nice place. Comfortable and attractive. The bartender and service staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive.

The beer list was odd. They offered six beers, four of which had ABVs over 8% with several at 12% or so. Personally, I am not crazy about high alcohol beers. Just my own preference. The two remaining beers were a lager that I had tried before and wasn't crazy about and an overly cute craft beer, which might have been great, or not. I like a lot of different styles of beer so a broader beer menu would be greatly appreciated.

No research required. If the Chick Fil A chief executive, Dan Cathy, hadn't been as dumb as a sack of hammers and hadn't blabbed about gay folks on talk radio, no one would have necessarily known. It was a self-inflicted wound. Cathy created his own controversy. Now they say they are not going to talk about it anymore.

I see no need to make Cathy and his ilk any richer, so I don't plan to buy their overrated sandwiches.

Love Popeyes. I started eating Popeyes fried chicken when it was only available in New Orleans.

As I noted before, there are many good alternatives to supporting a rich bigot.

I think "opposing bigotry" is an extraordinarily broad and vague concept, that you could apply it to all sorts of people (including these recent college protests where black students are explicitly saying how terrible "white fuckers" are), and that it makes absolutely no sense to inject political views into a consideration of what you feel like having for a meal.

Especially when, as you say, the founder has absolutely no chance of achieving his agenda.

But you are free to take whatever stance you want.

Nothing broad or vague about it. I won't buy a chicken sandwich from a wealthy bigot. Not very complicated.

Go ahead. That's your right.

Of course, millions of Americans disagree with you and his franchise has been absolutely booming despite a general downturn in the fast food industry, but you are free to do what you want.

Dan Cathy has lost the battle in any case. His bigotry did nothing to stop marriage equality. I still won't support the sumbitch, even if many misguided Americans do. The good news these days is that there are many good restaurants in Jersey City. There is no need to patronize fast-food bigots.

More pointless snark. Parking is one of the issues, but only one.

Dropping a high density, 87 unit S.R.O., on a quarter acre of land in a residential neighborhood across the street from three schools and down the street from a fourth, on an already highly congested intersection, is idiotic and irresponsible.

That corner should be developed but a micro-unit S.R.O. is not an appropriate development.

LOL. I'm sure some lawyer told you that this was a slam dunk case, but it's not. The city would be insane to spend millions of dollars now to bring this developer to court, when the developer followed the rules. If Mayor Fulop committed to bringing this to litigation, it would likely end up costing the city millions of dollars in legal fees, and the case law suggests the city will lose any such lawsuit. This is NOT a slam dunk case and the case law is just so strongly favoring the developer. In addition, I know that the city's chief counsel looked into all legal options the city had to block this, and none such option exists.

You have done a good job quoting the party line. Congratulations. And no, one by the way, said that this is a slam dunk case. I am not shocked that the city counsel doesn't support us. Nevertheless, there is indeed a case.

Better to fight it than to give in to Jersey City "politics as usual" preference for developers' money over the well being of the community.

It is more than attitude. Successful Federal prosecutors often tend to be be bullies. They usually make bad elected officials.

Until his star turn on 9/11, Rudy Guiliani was a not a great mayor. Likewise, before he got caught with his pants down, Eliot Spitzer was a lousy governor. Christie is a blow-hard and a bully as well. That is not superficial. That is substance. Christie reveals his true perspective in his ugly rants.

Christie also happens to be a political opportunist and a shameless hack.

Every aspect of the development process was flawed and the proposed development doesn't follow the approved plan. We have a case.

Given that the Fulop administration is effectively offering nothing of substance, the only choices may be to sue or to surrender. In the former, we could win or lose. In the later losing is absolutely guaranteed.

If we don't fight this parasitic development, we could be seeing it all over JC. And yes, the Fulop administration is promising to improve the development process. At this point, however, I see no reason to have confidence in any of their promises.

The meeting in City Council chambers, called at the last minute and held at an inconvenient time for many, was nevertheless packed with concerned residents. Unfortunately, it was also a waste of time. After Fulop whined about his feelings being hurt by criticism, he offered nothing but half truths and blather.

His three "solutions" were that the developer might be willing to reduce the density from 87 units to 71, a density still far too high. They also suggested that development residents would not be allowed to buy parking permits, which is an improvement over nothing but still a band-aide on a gaping wound.

His other suggestion was a vague proposal to use available funding to turn the project into affordable housing. Various numbers regarding the number of resulting units from 20- 40 were mentioned. Whether or not this is an actual proposal or just more blown smoke and an attempt to run out the clock is unclear.

Bizarrely, Fulop listed as a third option that community groups could file a lawsuit against the city to stop the development. He was, of course, dismissive of this option, but it did suggest that he is at least partially aware of the depth of the opposition to this modern SRO dropped into a residential neighborhood next to three schools.

Given the complete lack of leadership shown by the Fulop administration, it looks like a community lawsuit may be the best option.

McArdle is stating the obvious (which is valuable as the obvious is all too often ignored).

Taibbi has indeed turned himself into the Sarah Palin of financial journalism as McArdle asserts. Rather than addressing the real issues, Taibbi, like Sarah Palin, has chosen to rabble-rouse with half-truths and outright falsehoods. Taibbi's claim that Goldman "engineered every major market disruption since the Great Depression" makes exactly as much sense as Pailin's claim that Obama was "palling around with terrorists."

Goldman and the financial industry as a whole have a lot to answer for. Taibbi's crappy journalism does nothing to help.

No. Krugman generally knows what he is talking about. Taibbi clearly does not. I don't always agree with Krugman but I respect his views.

I am very critical of Goldman in particular and the financial industry in general, but that doesn't make Taibbi's hatchet job any less an example of poorly written trash.

Megan McCardle from the Atlantic commented about Tabbi's Goldman piece - "Matt Taibbi is becoming the Sarah Palin of journalism. He seems to deliberately eschew understanding his subjects, because only corrupt, pointy-headed financial journalists who have been co-opted by the system do that. And Matt Taibbi is here to save you from those pointy headed elites. " You can read the rest here:

Matt Taibbi Gets His Sarah Palin On

The short answer to your question is that Tabbi makes a lot of wild accusations which are both unsupported and simply wrong and hopes that those reading the article don't know enough about the subject to notice. Either that or he doesn't know enough about what he is writing himself. Both may be true.

He claims that Goldman "engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression" which is absurd. He implies that Goldman rigged the oil markets to give us $4 per gallon gasoline which is ridiculous. His claim that Goldman turned a sleepy oil market into a giant betting parlor, suggests that Taibbi knows nothing about the oil markets. He wildly overstates Goldman's role in the housing crunch and on and on.

Tabbi's purple prose is annoying and he doesn't seem to have the first clue about that which he is writing. There is much that Goldman can be criticized for, but Taibbi is too clueless to get it done.

I don't find the building either terribly beautiful or horribly ugly.

Regarding Matt Taibbi's hatchet job - it was simply lousy journalism. The writing is over the top and he gets his facts wrong. I think that there is a lot that Goldman and the entire financial industry has to answer for, but Taibbi gets it all wrong.

Zeppelin Hall Beer Garden

Just can't stay away

We went to the Zeppelin Hall Beer Garden last night - opening night. The place has potential but it was a bit chaotic.

It started raining heavily just after we arrived, so no one was outside in the garden. Inside was crowded and noisy. When we arrived the bars were having intermittant problems with their computer/cash registers so it took a while to get a beer.

The small kitchen had real problems. It took us 45 minutes to get two under-cooked cheeseburgers and some wings. We are told that they are planning a full menu. They have a ways to go yet.

Would I go back? Possibly though not necessailry anytime real soon.
