Very sorry to change the subject from day care, but I am hoping that someone on this blog might know of and recommend a full time, live out nanny to work in Jersey City. We have posted on Craigs list with limited success, we tried one agency but their applicants didn't show up. Any helpful advice on where to look or efficient and reasonably priced agencies would be gratefully received.

Thank you

I found a wonderful babysitter on SitterCity.com. You have to pay a small fee for this service.

I interviewed many, many great prospects.....I highly recommend it.

You are absolutely right not to be brash...It's absurd that these drivers continually get away with this. But, every once in a while, they'll hit a kid and finally learn their lesson....too late. Growing up here, I can name countless friends who have been hit...including my sister. My husband, having the same attitude about cars, that they should stop so I will just walk, changed his tune after years and years of me yelling at him after being hit in City...Hit and run...Nice getting call from the NYPD telling you how your husband's in the hospital after a hit-and-run, and "he's pretty bad". "He's the luckiest man on earth to be alive" is what the nurse told me when I arrived. But, you can bet he stopped testing speeding cars

Here's a reference in 1961 (abstract of the article only)

Reference to a land deal in the "Old West Bergen" neighborhood in 1933 (also abstract).

Here's an article about a rather interesting club founded by some young men in West Bergen in 1901.

In any event, there are plenty more such references. West Bergen is, in fact, the historic name of the neighborhood. The "Lincoln Park" neighborhood is the more modern invention by realtors (although because the park is such a prominent part of the area, it's not inaccurate either).

I think that maybe I blurred my point in this thread?.I agree that WestBergen is a valid name somewhere down the line?and according to The NYTimes, apparently.. I asked my mom when I first heard it (who I consider a JC Authority considering her family goes back circa 1880), ?Where the heck is West Bergen, she said, ?West Bergen is Westside?.

I was pointing out that in my 39 years here, a WS native (such as myself) would refer to the neighborhood in question as Westside?.As did my mom..We even wore shirts (well, not mom) ?West Side; The Best Side? (I kid you not). And, as I mentioned my WS friends and I couldn?t agree on the boundaries either?.except to agree that it runs the length of Westside and the North and South points are referred to as ?Marion? and ?Country Village? West is the Hacky..And, East is very hazy? When you hit Kennedy Blvd., we referred to it as ?The Boulevard?.

I?m not claiming that West Bergen is wrong or that I am an authority. ..?I?m just telling you what we call it ?

So, I digress. The real issue is this neighborhood is getting worse, not better. How can we help? I understand that there is a neighborhood association? That?s great?Afterall, it is the Bestside:o).

Well. I lived there in the 80s...I moved out in 1994, and I never heard of West Bergen until 2007 And, trust me, this is all tongue & cheek...Call it Kentucky for all I care...Just let's clean it up My husband calls me a Jersey City hick (which is totally true) and that my ultimate goal is to move us all back to WestSide...Plus, my friends and I had this debate about the boundaries of West Side....We all disagreed...The best we could do was agree that it runs the length of West Side Avenue.....

Had an early dinner here about 2 weeks ago. Husband ordered a pepporoni calzone, they delivered calzone - no pepporoni. Oh well...Mistakes happen, no big deal. They made us a new one. I had the margharitta pizza. Food was good. Nothing spectacular about it all. I think they must have franchised because I recall John's in the Village being delicious. This was not delicious. Just good. This is also too pricey for JC. But, I'll go back.

Actually, none of it qualifies because West Bergen is a bogus name....period. I'm sure someone called it West Bergen somewhere down the line so that the RE Agents quickly relabelled...But, I lived there for 24 years, dad born there in 1910. Mom in 1926. I never heard of West Bergen until 2007. It's Westside, but, you are right....Even if they had it right, only Harrison qualifies....

And, I read one real estate ad this weekend that listed Williams Street as Journal Square......This stuff is almost as funny as calling Hells Kitchen Clinton:o)

With that being said, this article breaks my heart. It was a such a nice neighborhood when I was a kid.

This is so very disappointing. St. Al's High. St. Al's Academy (Caritas) and now Hudson? Mr. Hurley is right...This is a dark day for Catholic Education in JC. But, praise to him for passing on the big money and keeping St. Anthony's alive! I feel for parents of High School age-kids living in JC. ...Where will they go? It's also another question to consider personally.....Where will my son go in 13 years? Where will all of the little ones downtown go in 13 years??? Prep & St. Doms cannot take all of them.

Martin Luther King Drive, Lafayette, WestSide (some parts still ok), Ocean Avenue, Garfield Avenue....I wouldn't live in these parts (although I know Lafayette will be debated..Personally, I still wouldn't live there). But, then again, I would have said the same thing about Van Vorst 10 years ago....

It's St. Peter's college. I lived there for 10 years. It's fine....In terms of JC; (0 being murdered if walking out the door & 5 meaning you left your wallet on your front porch overnight & it was there in the morning), it's a 2 1/2. In 10 years, I never had an incident. But, I'm also very cautious...Like anywhere, it has its pockets of danger.

Yeah. I never got a parking ticket because I don't drive. But, my hubby just got a car, and he spends a lot of time moving it around to avoid tickets. So, maybe this author's husband should do the same if he chooses to own a vehicle in the City. But, I do have to agree with this letter to the Mayor, regardless. I am a huge complainer to the City about the need for more police presence, beat cops, etc. If I saw a patrol car or beat cop for every ticket scooter I see, methinks "it happens all the time" might no longer be an valid answer. Unfortunatley, I've lived here a long time, so I think her plea to the Mayor is futile....And, I hate to be a negative nelly, but it's a fact in this City....And, I hate reading about my poor old neighborhood being a cess-pool of crime...It used to be so lovely....

Although it should be, Lead testing is not actually a standard part of well-baby visits in many offices including my son's pediatrician's (NYU in the City). I had to ask, and while they were perfectly willing; it is not standard. I was told, "Yes, we can definitely test. You obviously are informed, but no we don't do it routinely." And, while I am very happy with my pediatricians, I really do agree that this should be standard." So, what about the moms that aren't informed? I bet that there are lots and lots of teenage moms out there who have no idea and if their doctors aren't informing them, then we have a problem. There is lots and lots of renovation around JC. That means lead flying around the streets & in the air. I'm not sure that legislation should require it of daycare? ...That's a strange place for it. But, it should be required at all well baby visits for sure. Or, at least an option.

This is a huge thread, and I don't have time to go back to all the posts, so I've only caught the last few.

But, I am consfused why we're down on WF? Are they a bad company? Do they overwork employees for no benefits or something? (I'm not being funny. I'm serious.) I walk across-town once a week to get to WF because the food is delicious....The produce is just beautiful! I'm not an organic weirdo either. For me, it's just better tasting....So, if we're down on WF for a real reason, I need to know why.

I would be so happy to see them open one in JC!! And, a Wegmans too! Either or, actually.

p.s. I saw some comments about Pathmark. Again, I haven't read all of it, but I can say that I was there yesterday for some last minute Easter items, and I waited on-line at one of the 2 open registers for 50 minutes while 10 employees walked around, talked on their cellphones and joked around with each other. Whenever I or one of the other folks on-line asked if they were opening a register, we were rudely met with a nasty, "No." We all just stood there laughing and shocked at how mind-boggling it was the whole time. That store is a customer service abomination!

That's insane. Vidal Sassoon on 5th Avenue charges around $60.

If we have to pay 5th Ave prices, then I say go to 5th Avenue.

Bumble and Bumble is another great salon in the City. They offer super-cheap deals for stylists in training, etc. And, any stylist at these top salons is dependable so it's no worry.

They also treat you like Royalty which is just a nice break for the 45 minutes or so.....

Check out the websites.

Moved out on my own in 1994 and, unfortunately, had to move my parents not too long after as crime/drugs took over quickly. This was, at one time, a beautiful neighborhood. Before Newport was Newport, it was just Pavonia. In 20 years, I don't think I ever saw anyone on the platform until Newport was built, and the Path station was renovated into Pavonia/Newport. Before Newport, the platform was a plot of oozing, yellow slime. Right out of a movie....I am sure some chemical or something really aweful from the land above - factories, Railroad yards & land that was vacated years earlier - when the station was Erie Street (notice the E on the pillars). It was a wasteland of vacant rubble when I was growing up. Anyhow, during the renovation, they sprayed and sprayed and sprayed and then sprayed some more of that stucco stuff that you will now notice on the ceilings/walls at the station (looks like white (now turning black) cement or stucco. Every once in a while, they have to respray because the slime breaks through again...

I watched my sister's dog for a week about 2 years back, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I got to Hamilton Park for a walk one Saturday morning. I had my pooch leashed, but it was mayhem of unleashed doggies running around. Everytime one of the puppers ran up to my sister's dog (he's a bit of a chicken & is scared of other doggies:o), I had to say, "Could you, please, leash your dog." or, "Your dog really needs to be on a leash, please." Of course, I was met with a sea of nasty responses... How dare I suggest such a thing!!! Seriously, I love the pups. But, put them on a leash already, and clean up the poop.. And, I hope things have improved over the past couple of years....
