Hopefully the new ownership gets on board with keeping the area clean. School is back in session and we all know the trash these large groups of high school kids from Ferris leave behind from their lunchtime gatherings. Paper plates and pizza crusts need to be picked up everyday as well as a can placed out front during EVERY lunchtime. Well see!!!

Nikol, Thanks for the info, I appreciate you filling us in on the complexities that were in play with the streetscape. While it makes sense that trees could not be installed due to the vault situation, I must admit I was very dissapointed with the way the streetscape looks without the trees! It's amazing how much those missing trees would have aded to the overall look and feel of Newark Ave. I also agree with your feelings on the gates, they do add bleakness to the area. In addition, some of the businesses storefronts and signs still look raggedy like this one:

Re: Graffiti

When people think of graffiti they think of the New York City subways during the 1970s. The truth is that vandalism can happen right here in Maplewood, New Jersey. Graffiti can appear on street signs, buildings, even train stations. Bored juveniles and gang members are often the cause of this malicious attack on property. Usually, the individual home owner is safe from attack but many businesses know the pain of trying to remove these unsightly markings.

Graffiti removal is quickly becoming a billion dollar annual expense for some cities. Los Angeles spends $140 million dollars every year. Some cities have started anti-graffiti programs to combat the problem. Locally, the Jersey City police have organized an anti-graffiti task force to eradicate, enforce, and educate against this type of vandalism. They engage teachers, residents and business owners to help control and prevent graffiti tagging. The JC-AGTF (Jersey City Anti-Graffiti Task Force) locates graffiti on a daily basis. There are two methods staffers use to for graffiti paint removal depending on the severity of the incident and the composition of the surface. They either use power washing techniques or paint the entire surface.

Many business owners looking for the simplest and cheapest solution often turn to white washing the surface again and again. These victims would due better to educate themselves on painting surfaces with anti graffiti coatings. There are two types of coatings used to prevent graffiti and Olger Fallas Painting has years of experience working with both. The first is called a sacrificial coating. This coating is applied to the surface and then comes off along with the removal of the graffiti. Power washing equipment pushes both the graffiti and the coating off the surface. While this method protects the underlying paint it requires a new sacrificial coat on the surface after the graffiti is removed. It is a one time use to protect the original surface but then is sacrificed in order to remove the graffiti. The materials used in making a sacrificial coating are inexpensive polymers that form weak bonds with the surface making it difficult for spray paint to stick.

The other type of anti graffiti products is more permanent. These coatings don?t allow the graffiti paint to adhere to the surface in the first place. They are often more expensive but only need to be applied once. The permanent coatings create a shield on top of the surface. After the vandal has added their graffiti tag to the surface the business owner can simply wipe the surface clean with a simple solvent. The underlying surface remains undamaged and the permanent coating stands strong ready for the next attack. Permanent coatings are UV stable and guaranteed to protect almost any surface for up to 10 years.

Aside from white washing and anti-graffiti painting the use of power sprayers can sometimes do the job by themselves. Mixing the pressure washing water with either sand or soda can help breakdown the paint. The one problem with this power scrubber method is it can wear down the original surface.

Vandalism like graffiti is aggravating for businesses and the community at large. At the end of the day having an easy solution to combat this problem will make everyone?s life a little easier.

Sure, rest of the class read chapter 2 while I go over this with jaah37.

Manhattan is the big draw, very few people are going to travel from Manhattan or Brooklyn to visit Jersey City. Many people that live in Jersey City do so only because it is close to Manhattan, they live here but work and for the most part, shop, drink and eat there.
They live here because Jersey City offers them something that Manhattan can't, a lower rent and/or more space.
If you want to bring people to Jersey City to spend money you have to offer something the big city doesn't or can't, not the same thing.

Can you give me a few examples of what businesses would work here in DTJC that NYC doesn't have? I like your logic but it seems a little advanced for this present time. There are still many storefronts with nothing in them...it's hard to be so selective when the present number of commercial properties can't even be filled.

Instead of edging ever closer to becoming Manhattan/Brooklyn Light maybe we, or business owners, should be looking at what Jersey City can offer that the big city can't.

The storefront that the Barcade is going into has been vacant for quite some time. There are a few vacant store fronts on Newark Ave that have been vacant for at least a year or more. Isn't it better to have a Barcade at the old WUMU property than nothing? Owner of Jersey City embankment says she's building housing; apparently rejecting city's bid for property
Published: Wednesday, July 21, 2010, 4:40 PM
Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal

The owner of the Sixth Street Embankment has told Jersey City officials she will not sell the land, despite the City Council voting last week to bond $7.7 million to buy the coveted elevated land.

Supporters hoped the bond would bring an end to a years-long dispute over the parcel on Sixth Street between Marin Boulevard and Newark Avenue.

But Victoria Hyman, wife of developer Steve Hyman, who purchased the property from Conrail for $3 million in 2003, sent a letter Monday to various city officials saying she doesn't want to sell and hopes to develop the site.

"This (proposed development) would make the city money rather than drain the (city's) resources any further while cleaning and gentrifying the area and potentially creating many millions of dollars in new taxes and many full time jobs," she wrote.

The city filed a lawsuit in 2006 arguing that under federal law, Conrail should have offered the site to the city before selling it to Hyman. That lawsuit is still pending.
Steve Hyman said the city refused to sign an agreement that would have settled the litigation and finalized the sale. He also said he and the city never agreed on a selling price.

Administration officials declined to comment.

"I used to think we needed Dr. Henry Kissinger to get involved as negotiation was complex, but now I think we need Dr. Phil instead," observed Ward E Councilman Steven Fulop, whose district includes the embankment.

Hyman presented a plan to the city in 2007 that called for 75 percent of the walls to remain and 1,000 to 1,500 residential units, in addition to a light rail link and public park. His wife said they're still committed to providing a park alongside the residential development.

In her letter, Hyman's wife said she hopes to develop the embankment into something like the High Line, a New York City park on a former elevated freight line.

"Preserving some of the Embankment walls would be a priority along with a park, walking trail and the reality of helping to connect Journal Square to the waterfront with Conrail's help," she wrote.

The Embankment Preservation Coalition and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy have been fighting to turn the parcel into a park with trails. Jersey City officials have said they want it to connect NJ Transit Light Rail on the waterfront with Journal Square.

After spending alot of money to renovate/ beautify Newark Ave why is that this store still displays this weather beaten worn out sign? They make the effort to replace the sidewalks, add new trees and planters, put in new decorative streetlights and benches but allow this business to keep this ugly unkept sign? How can this business have no pride and make zero effort to at least paint the darn thing?

Every night we see these kids out being punks. Every night the park on Wayne Street is racous and disgusting.

I used to be sympathetic to the concerns of folks who oppose gentrification. IanMac might now that about me; I'm not sure.

Right about now, I simply do not give a damn. I feel like Travis Bickle: turn on the tap and wash away the scum. If you can't enforce the existing law and existing regulations, folks will adapt work-arounds to skirt the law and do selfish, self-serving, destructive behaviors. Unfortunately, police resources are few and they have made priorities. (Do we use CompStat in this town?)

Most of us have lived in this town for 4-10 years and we see few improvements beyond a few restaurants, sidewalks, planters, etc.

Individuals have pushed for change through business ventures. Developers for residences. Andit seems Steve Fulop bashes his head against a wall of inept colleagues and city structures.

But these kids walk the street every night and their antics are neve stopped. The city can't handle Wayne Street Park, so they remove benches. The city has no solution for dumping, so they remove public garbage cans. The city can't figure out how to get folks into town, so they build the Columbus Autobahn. The City couldn't install a traffic light on Grand/ Barrow for 6 months. The City decided to drag their feet on Hamilton Park until... A WEEK before the election and then ruin last summer and fall with their slow work. The City sees the Green Acres money to acquire the Embankment, but they ignore it for years. The City sees schools failing and school board ineptitude, and there's a new contract for the bozo in charge.

Mostly, I've recited downtown inconveniences and problems of the past several years. Ask the folks in the Heights, Mosquito Park, Westside, JSQ, Lafayette, Bergen Hill, Greenville... their problem are worse and the solutions are fewer.

Yet, mostly we see foot-dragging, corruption, and penny-ante misbehavior from the Hudson County Democrats and their public-employee minions.

This IS a political problem. Ian didn't make it so.

BTW: Webmaster, this is another reason this website shouldn't be exclusive with it's concern. Problems and solutions can cross the imaginary border between Wards.

Very well put alanright...this city has so much potential that may never be realized do to the politicians and police being reactive rather than proactive! (If their even ACTIVE at all!)

NEWARK AVENUE STREETSCAPE
Phase One and Two Streetscape Project - from Coles to Grove:
This project is substantially completed. The contractor is currently fixing a few smaller items and is set to install a street clock.

Phase Three Streetscape Project - from Coles to Summit Avenue:
Phase three of the project is a continuation of the Newark Avenue phase 1 and 2 project.
Phase 3 was set to start shortly. However, the second-lowest bidder on the project is contesting the bidding process. Construction will most likely start in August and will continue into the summer of 2011.

Former Jersey City deputy mayor Leona Beldini gets three years in prison

Leona Beldini, a former Jersey City deputy mayor convicted of bribery in connection to last summer's sweeping FBI sting, was sentenced today in federal court in Newark to three years in prison.

The 75-year-old Democrat stood silently as U.S. District Judge Jose Linares announced her sentence. She must also pay a $30,000 fine.

Beldini faced up to four years and three months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines. Before being sentenced, she asked Linares for mercy, saying she had never before been so afraid.

"I stand before you facing the most terrifying moment of my whole life,? Beldini said, her voice shaking.

She was found guilty in February of accepting $20,000 in illegal campaign contributions in exchange for promising to help secure development approvals. The case was among dozens to stem from the massive sting anchored by Solomon Dwek, an admitted real estate swindler who became an FBI informant. He spent more than two years posing as a crooked real estate developer trying to trade envelopes of cash for building permits.

Beldini?s lawyer, Brian J. Neary, urged Linares to spare her from prison, saying she suffered from myriad health problems and had already suffered tremendously as a result of the conviction. ?She has lost a career. She has lost a business. She has lost the admiration for her community,? Neary said.

But Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser argued Beldini's crime required incarceration, saying public corruption undermines the system binding our society together.

?The scourge of corruption strikes at the very heart of our democratic system of government,? Moser said.

Beldini was treasurer for Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, and authorities say the cash went into his campaign. The mayor was not charged.

I had to deal with a similar situation and unfortunately there's not much more you can do. I have an abandoned building next to my place that had trash dumped in the alleyway. I called the JCIA and they said they had to send an inspector out...long story short it took about 4-6 weeks to get cleaned up, I called the inspector a few times and they said they were trying to reach the owner of the building to issue fines. You and your neighbors must keep following up...good luck!

I hear nothing but complaints about our antiquated water supply on this board, until they want to raise rates.

The simple fact of the matter is that most of the country (JC included) has been paying below the cost of infrastructure maintenance on all sorts of things, including water.

The cost of putting off repairs and upgrades for decades is sudden and drastic increases when repairs can no longer be put off.

As evidenced by monthly water main breaks in JC repairs can no longer be put off. I doubt these increases come close to actually paying for all the upgrades that are needed.

Maybe I'm being too cynical but I have a feeling that even if JC were paying at or above the cost on infrastructure maintenence the problems would still exist and maintenance would be minimal at best.

I would eat there twice a week but frankly during the last 2 months of them being open you would show up and half the time it would be closed.

There is enough foot traffic in that area to keep a business going. Look at Madam Claudes, Abbeys, slightly off the beaten path (more so than Cafe Nia) but they make it work.

I hope Cafe Nia comes back or someone with a similar business model because it will work, maybe after a few tweaks but it will work.
