Re: Catholic Schools Take Money from Gas Pipeline Company Spectra Energy

Gerry O?Connor & the Jersey City Catholic school system should release a public statement condemning the plans to build a massive pipeline through Jersey City.

It is in the school's interest to prevent this mega disaster waiting to happen.

Take the money, use it to campaign against Spectra's plans, and be open about it.

Everybody that gets a donation from Spectra should use it to fight the pipeline.

Use them or lose them! What is so freaking hard about that?

The whole Jersey City government needs to be fired and new people hired to clean house. They're almost all corrupt thieves.

Jersey City Satisfaction
#65
Home away from home
Home away from home

Councilman Steve Fulop has a Satisfaction Survey out:

How is the city performing?
Tell us how well you think the city is doing in each of the following areas.

Parks and Open space
Recreational activities for children
Access to transportation
Tax stability
Pedestrian safety/walkability
Fire
Education
Police
Trash collection/cleanliness
Street maintenance
Recreational activities for adults
Cultural events
Ward E council office

What is the one thing that the city can work on to make you, your family or your neighborhood's life better in Jersey City?

I wonder if we'll score any better than we did in the last the last satisfaction survey that Jersey City was in.

I don't understand why we need to pay cops for deliveries and road work.

New York City and most other places manage just fine without cops for these tasks.

Why should we have to pay this extortion?

Perhaps you value your flowers/stolen materials at over $500 and demand that it be classified as Felony Theft.

I think that under $200 and the worst that will happen is a disorderly person's charge.

Given the amount of time, energy, and associated costs that go into a flower, $500 is easily plausible.

Mosquito Control in Jersey City
#69

Does anyone know of any programs or plans to control mosquitoes in JC?

I've been bitten up a lot this year. It seems they're smaller and quieter than in years past.

Anyone else being annoyed by these little buggers?

Is Jersey City even testing our mosquitoes to check for West Nile? According the the NYC Health Department, they've found them with West Nile in Staten Island, which isn't very far away for a mosquito to fly.

Selective enforcement, turning a blind eye to blantent law breaking and not leading by example are three of the main problems with Jersey City police. I don't understand why they don't care more about the city.

Those cops weren't working for US, they were moonlighting, taking advantage of their uniform (bought by us) and somehow getting use of our patrol cars to make extra money because the $100k + in regular pay and departmental overtime plus bennies isn't enough. So traffic wasn't their job. I'm not certain just what their job is that couldn't be accomplished by a flagger at a fraction the price as is done in most of the country, but ticketing anyone isn't it.

+1

It's time to change the law requiring construction companies to hire police for road work. Flaggers would probably do a better job!

Allowing people to take photos inside your home is absolutely ridiculous. All your personal belongings, photographs, books on the shelves, etc, will become a matter of public record.

Those little shits ain't entering my home with a camera.

That is a very dangerous intersection. I rarely say this, but it should be a light. It is necessary not only for vehicular and cyclist safety, but also for pedestrians to cross the street.

People get up a lot of speed going up and down that hill on Newark. Cyclists have a particular problem, because they will be going faster than usual, and anyone coming out of Pavonia onto Newark will have a hard time seeing them and judging their speed. The drivers are looking for cars, not speeding cyclists.

With the bend in the road, cars accelerating up the hill have a hard time seeing you as well.

If you are a cyclist, you should slow to a near stop before proceeding through that intersection to be sure you are seen. If you are a pedestrian trying to cross there, make sure your affairs are in order.

I bet they're trying to make up for lost revenue during those storms this winter.

I've seen more tickets on legally and semi questionably parked cars in the past few months than ever before.

I would like somebody to start a class action lawsuit to force Jersey City to permit the dispute of tickets via the web or mail.

It is de facto punishment when you have to take a day off work to fight an obviously wrong ticket.

Compstat just provides numbers of loosely categorized crimes by month and district. No details, no follow up, no way to verify accuracy. It's way too general to be useful.

Is there somewhere to browse detailed crime reports? Or would you have to file a FOIA/OPRA request to get access to specific things?

Police blotter / Live crime stats?

Is there a police blotter, incident database, or anything for Jersey City?

It seems like there are a lot of crimes and accidents that happen and nobody ever hears about them. The police respond, but there's no report in the papers or online.

I think every Jersey City crime and incident should be in a publicly accessible, user-friendly database so that we can accurately monitor trends and demand action when necessary.

If it's any consolation, the countryside is noisy with motorcycles too. My partner and I just bought a weekend retreat 2 hrs from here and the scenic roads around our cabin are a magnet for the Harley guys. Just be thankful that you don't wake up to the sounds of target practice next door like I was this weekend.

There is no escaping the noise!

JCPD overtime Scam Scandal
#80

Home away from home

Jersey City cops earn $6.6 million in overtime

"The five officers who earned the most overtime last year -- taking home a combined $333,355 in overtime alone -- all work in the radio room at the city's Public Safety Communications Center"-- a job can be done by a robot or a call center in India.

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... y_cops_earn_66_milli.html

I'm all for the Police. I respect what they do and happily pay my taxes to support them, however the criminals amongst them scamming overtime pay should be sentenced to hard core prison time for this grand theft.

In terms of $$, these are amongst the worst crimes committed in Jersey City. 10k payouts to Healy are nothing compared to the scale of organized crime going on here.

This stinks to high heaven of corruption.

From the closure, to the attempted United Way scheme, to the current inability to provide an inventory, you can't help but smell the fishy funk emanating from this fiasco.

They need a FBI investigation, not just an inventory.

The city and the fire department should be sued by the family of the second and third victim.

Why was nothing done after the first death?

Kill someone once, shame on the landlord; Kill someone twice, shame on the city; Kill someone three times, well that's Jersey City for ya.

It seems to be wiped off the web pretty well, but it will forever be mentioned in this NYT article from before the election:

Quote:

POLITICS; The Naked and the Dead By JONATHAN MILLER Published: October 10, 2004

THERE are photographs of one candidate naked and slumped over on his front porch. Another candidate was removed from the ballot because he does not live here. There is a whisper campaign about yet another one's personal life. There are rumors of surveillance and charges of drunkenness and break-ins and race-baiting and the invocation of a dead mayor for political gain. And according to a chat board on the Web, every candidate is gay.

In short, it is business as usual.

Such is the hyperventilated state of New Jersey's second-largest city as it gears up for a special election on Nov. 2 in which 11 candidates will be vying for mayor. And in Jersey City, where hitting below the belt is considered a soft touch, skullduggery abounds.
