I was in Hoboken Municipal Court yesterday contesting a ticket and one of the cases that came up before me was one similar to yours: someone hit a car and left the scene. The judge asked if the owner of the car that was hit was there to make a statement. The owner was not there, although they had received notice of the hearing. The city prosecutor recommended reducing the level of the offense, I don't remember to what, and the judge accepted it. I'm pretty sure the guy that did this got off with a lighter offense and fee because the owner of the car that was hit was not there.

If you're at all inclined to make sure that the person who hit your car gets what they deserve, I would suggest you attend their hearing.

Here's my revised list, including only places I've either lived in, or are familiar enough with to form an opinion (un-scientific ranking):

1. San Diego, CA

2. New York, NY

3. Boston, MA

4. San Francisco, CA

5. Washington, DC

6. Jersey City, NJ

7. Yonkers, NY

And, yes, the survey's educational criteria seem pretty weak.

It's bad enough that Jersey City is ranked 13th, how about the fact that Yonkers is ranked 10th? Has anyone here been to Yonkers? It makes Jersey City look like a sophisticated, happening place.

I'm guessing that the 30 variables used in this study were equally weighted. I can't think of another explanation for the senseless results.

Exactly! And I'm a bit surprised that our otherwise excellent Councilman would go along with this in this case.

I contacted the Mayor's Action Bureau about this last week, asking them to put back the missing garbage cans. I was told that only property owners can request garbage cans in front of their property. This may be the case, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

With respect to Steve Fulop, I had contacted him several weeks ago about the garbage cans on Jersey between 1st and Hamilton Park overflowing on weekends. I sent him pictures and suggested the Incinerator Authority needed to increase (or do rather) weekend pickups. His response was that they were going to remove all garbage cans from Jersey Ave. as an experiment. And lo and behold, they disappeared. In my opinion, this is exactly the opposite of what should have happened. Downtown needs more garbage cans, not less. The issue really was the frequency of Incinerator Authority pickups and enforcement of no-dumping rules.

I know someone else on this list had a meeting with Councilman Fulop a few weeks back. Maybe they can share with us what the plan is. In any event, we need the cans back, and perhaps another meeting with the the Councilman (I know he's busy right now) would help him hear our concerns and give him a chance to tell us what the plan is (if any). All interested parties, please PM me and I'll try to set it up.

I don't understand why it's so hard to get a traffic light put up in this city. It is a city after all and I would say there are many intersections that could use one. I guess it's just another example of how the city is run the "old school" way where nothing gets done the right way.

As someone pointed out previously, innocent until proven guilty is not a standard that applies to public opinion, public credibility, ethics, etc. Most of these have to do with the appearance of propriety, fairness, etc. It's a lot looser standard. And that's the issue that's being debated here. We're not in courtroom and we're not a jury. It's just about opinions.

Before we take the plunge, can someone explain how often or under what conditions a property gets re-assessed (eg, for the city to notice that it should be $7600 vs $4200) OR when this city-wide reval is supposed to take place? It will absolutely change whether or not we even bid on this place now.

Thanks!

One situation would be if the house has had substantial renovations and a CofO hasn't been issued for the renovations yet. Once the CofO is issued, the inspectors come out to reassess the property.

I'm concerned about the issue, but can't say I have any ideas more than knowing specific garbage cans where household garbage is dumped, knowing that public garbage cans aren't picked up frequently enough and that there are many places that could use more garbage cans. Knowing this and communicating this to Fulop or the JCIA is not enough. I've brought these issues up before at HPNA meetings and nothing happens.

What I had in mind was that a group of like-minded citizens would get together, define the problem, come up with some action plans, present the plans to whoever can do something about it and then follow up on what's been done. In other words, a proactive, involved, focused group of neighbors that come together to tackle one issue. It sounds like you've already started the process. Why not have a meeting amongst ourselves about this? I'm sure together we could come up with more than on our own.

Judging by the mayoral vote, about 19,500 people voted in the election. This should be compared to registered voters to determine turnout, or eligible voters, if that number were available. Does anyone know the number of registered voters in JC? I would be surprised if eligible voters were more than 1/3 of the total population (you have to remove children and legal and illegal aliens from the totals).

On a positive note, Ward E had the most votes. I don't know if it's the best turnout since I don't know the number of Ward E registered/eligible voters.

This complaint was brought up several months ago at a Captain's meeting. Captain McDonough's answer was essentially that all the PATH Police care about is getting the cars through the Tunnel. They're not concerned about traffic within Jersey City. It's up to our local officials (police, city council, whoever) to get the PATH to change this policy, if only temporarily. I did notice increased enforcement by the PATH police a short while after this meeting.

It's not a matter of deserving it. It just is. Garbage on the streets is one of those things that distinguishes third world countries from others.

Yea, blame the teachers' tenures, not the fact that some kids that go to our schools are total failures along with their parents. One has to want to learn in order to be taught something. Urban schools in NJ are held to more stringent rules and regulations then any other schools. The curriculum is practically spoon fed to the students. A friend of mine teaches at a high school in East Orange. Her students aren't allowed to use rulers, because they'll use them to "joust". Books need to be kept on a shelf away from the students because they will hit each other over the head with them. Those books are only taken out for reading specific paragraphs. In order to present new information, she has to engage the multiple intelligences based on Gardner's theories. And guess what, despite her hard work and following all the rules mandated by the state, the kids are still failing standardized tests. Simply put, they are losers. They don't give a crap about their teachers or the society they live in. But, of course, its all our fault.

This is also my impression: more than anything, what separates good school districts from bad ones is the percentage of kids in the school system that actually want to learn, or conversely, the percentage of kids that prevent others from learning. The best teachers in the world won't make much of an impact on a class full of kids that don't want to learn or a class where a few kids don't let the rest of them learn. The reason charter schools work is not because there's something inherently better about them, but rather, its because parents who care about their children's education send their kids there, and consequently a higher proportion of the student body are kids that want to learn.

A "new" idea occurred to me:

* Embankment into a park, as discussed.

* 6th Street one-way westbound.

* light rail on 6th street connecting whereever in the northwest to Th. Gangemi/ Newport Mall, and back.

* along the way, the light rail would pass by FOUR parks (Mary Benson, Enos Jones, Embankment, and the 6th/ Manila baseball field).

Yep. 6th street is wide enough to accomodate the light rail and one-way only traffic. The walkway next to the Embankment would not be necessary because the Embankment would be a footpath and there's a sidewalk on the other side.

The light rail would go two-ways. Some streets are similar to this in Paulus Hook. Most of 6th is one way already.

Cons: Holy Rosary and St. Anthony of Padua's would object. So would the two-many drivers who use it as a cut-through to get back to Newark Avenue. (But we should not encourage that, anyway). Also, there's a parking question, but a light rail encourages car-less living.

Pros: their parishioners love to take the light rail! Running the light rail at street level satisfies the Mayor and other light rail aficionados, secures the park, connects the downtown (incl. park) to the Heights and other constituencies.

Also, why make the light rail climb onto the embankment if it doesn't have to? Lots of wasted energy there.

+1 Best idea on the Embankment I've heard so far.

Hi, I've used the perimeter ant spray that you can buy at home depot. The general idea is that you spray around your house and that keeps them out. Most of the time the ants don't actually live inside the building, but rather have nests outdoors and come in looking for food. If you live in an apartment building, try to determine where the ants are coming in through (usually where the floor meets the wall) and spray there. It works pretty well but you'll have to kill the ants already inside yourself.
