Seriously, why on earth is there no school today? A 2-hour delay would have sufficed. We got the school closure call at 5:20 a.m.

For stuff to do I'd recommend going bowling if you have a car or you can take the light rail

JayRes,

Since you attended yesterday, can you offer a better definition of what "certain students" means to the children of Jersey City? Who exactly is eligible to take advantage of these vouchers?

Thanks for your insights.

JM

From my understanding it is for "low-income" children, which I realized after reading the article Dan posted again.

Senate bill would set up scholarship program enabling students in ailing districts to attend different schools
Friday, January 28, 2011

State Sen. Sandra Bolden Cunningham, D-Jersey City, and her 31st Legislative District colleagues - Assemblymen Charles Mainor, D-Jersey City, and Jason O'Donnell, D-Bayonne - will host a community meeting Monday on legislation that would provide scholarships to certain students in the Jersey City school district and in 12 other under performing districts, which would allow them to attend a different school.

The lawmakers will be joined by educational leaders to discuss and answer questions on the Opportunity Scholarship Act, a bill that would establish a five-year pilot program to provide scholarships to low-income students in chronically failing school districts.

The forum will be held at the Mary McLeod Bethune Life Center, 140 Martin Luther King Dr., Jersey City, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jersey City Schools Superintendent Charles T. Epps Jr., NJ E3 (Excellent Education For Everyone) Executive Director Derrell Bradford, and state NAACP President James Harris are expected to attend.

The scholarships would be funded by corporations, which would receive a dollar-for-dollar reimbursement in the form of state tax credits; those credits would be offset by a reduction in state aid to schools. Under the program, parents could send their children to either a participating private school or an out-of-district public school.

The legislation was recently approved by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. The next step is consideration by the full Senate.

I'm not sure if I agree with you. A voucher at least puts the power in the hand of the parents and affords them more options other than just "winning" the lottery. As someone who's kid just "lost" in 3 different lotteries, I don't think charter schools should be the only option. Considering I am now looking at a hefty tuition bill or mercy from the BOE to keep my kid out of a failing school, I like the idea of a voucher for private or out of district schools. Remember, not everyone gets into the good charters, simply because of the luck of the draw... and when you lose, it more than sucks.

From speaking to a parent who's kid actually did the afterschool program with the lego teacher, I understood that she was very pleased how the school handled the situation. I do know that the guy was removed immediately and the police were notified. I am not sure if they are planning to change their policy so that 2 adults must be present at all times in the classroom. That is something I am interested in knowing especially for afterschool programs however I am aware that TECCS is underfunded.

FWIW, I found the principal of TECCS to be extremely approachable and personable. When I attended the open house she had kids just walking into her office to say goodbye or tell her something and she treated them all warmly and with respect. If my son is accepted to TECCS, that is where he will go.

Yes! The Concordia Learning Center on Summit Avenue offers the Abbot program for 3 year olds. The program, teachers and facility are FABULOUS! They share the facility with St.Joseph's School for the Blind... so the website is a little confusing. Just call the school and ask to speak to Migdalia Viole. She is the director of the program.

If you have new appliances and nothing else make sure to point this out to the inspector when they come by. Appliances such as the fridge are frequently taken with owners as they move from one house to another but the dishwasher, range and microwave would typically stay. In a condo situation the appliances will typically stay put. Therefore, the inspector MAY assume a kitchen to be "upgraded". It's really subjective and depends on the reval firm and if sales data reflects upgraded kitchens increasing value. There are different levels of upgrades however. Obviously a newly renovated kitchen with granite countertops, new cabinets, new floor AND new appliances is going to be given more weight than just newer appliances. If you renovated your kitchen or bath you should have filed permits with the town and an "Added Assessment" would've been placed on the property by the tax assessor. If not then the reval firm will pick it up in the inspection. With respect to interiors, they look at the year the condo or house was built or renovated and start there as a basis. Then they look at the kitchen and bath to see if it has been upgraded since then, ( a reno in last 10 years is usually the standard). They also mark the overall interior on a graded scale. So if you renovated your kitchen in the past 10 years and put in stone, nice cabinets, etc...just like it will increase the value of your property on the market it will increase the value of your assessment. If your kitchen hasnt been redone since the 70's but you have all new appliances it MAY be considered an updated kitchen, but only to a degree. If you only replaced the fridge then it's probably not just cause to be considered an updated kitchen. Also, the inspectors are trained to differentiate between a less expensive Ikea cabinet renovation and a top of the line job. If you put in Ikea cabinets yourself for say $5000 and they have you marked down for a top of the line $40K kitchen overhaul then you have some room to argue your value. There will be informal hearings where you can point out things like this. The burden of proof is on the homeowner so a receipt for your IKEA kitchen will be good evidence that your upgrade isn't top of the line. But again, if you are in a part of town that is highly desirable and the sales shows no difference in value between one person's kitchen with a sub zero fridge and all new granite countertops and another person's new GE fridge and Ikea cabinets...then kitchen upgrades won't make the biggest difference in your assessment. When you go through the hearing process if you still feel like you need to appeal then you will need to show sales that prove your assessment should be lowered. So let them in your house, let them see everything and double check your property record card once you receive your value. This is all explained on the website and whichever reval firm gets the bid for Jersey City they will have literature regarding the process as well.

JC site: http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/tax_assessment.aspx?id=6312

Thanks JCSHEP this was very helpful. I think I am not going to anything until the reval is over, eventhough our fridge is almost as old as me. I don't want to risk appearing to have renovated the kitchen.

Do things like appliances matter for a reval? If you are considering installing new appliances, does it make sense to wait until it's over?

FYI...

Last week parents of students at PS. 8 received a copy of the extermination report that stated certain classrooms were sprayed for bedbugs and it named the pesticide used. It however did not include any other information or education about bed bugs.

Maybe once they spray the school you will get SOMETHING. I am with you and I think it's unacceptable! As long as people remain in the dark about the problem it will just spread and spread.

When my son arrives home I strip him of his clothes and put them in a plastic bag under the stoop along with his backpack and jacket. I wash his clothes in hot water and dry them on high heat. I follow this with a prayer every day that we do not catch these terrible monsters.

It has been explained on this site before that the JJ does not mention race because often people are wrong when determining race. It makes sense to me. You may think someone is Latino who is in fact African American. I've totally been dead wrong when determining ethnicity (i.e. just met someone whom I referred to as Indian and found out later she is Egyptian). And forget about Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Simply saying Asian is very broad. And then what about mixed people? I know someone who's mom is black and dad is white but people think he is either Jewish, Italian, or Puerto Rican.

So, at the end of the day, hairstyle, height, weight, eye color and clothes have to do. (and, I bet more often than not, those descriptions are wrong. human perception is a strange thing)

So when you take out cash, do you give the teller your card? Well, if you do, this could have been you.

I should clarify because it really does not affect my day to day life that much to the point where I'm ready to move or make a big deal. I think more in terms of re-sale in a situation like this. Also the fact that I was told that sound is really not that much of an issue kinda bugs me. I do think that by simply putting down an area rug most of the sound SHOULD be muffled from the apt above me. I figure since he just moved in about a month ago he just needs time to get the place set up.

I would talk to the guy right away and ask him if he could get an area rug. You could also offer to pay for a rug pad for underneath it. In terms of resale, I wouldn't worry too much. I think it's to be expected. In our last place, out neighbors complained about us frequently (we have a little one). We put down rugs and pads and it seemed to the trick until one day we were asked to keep our kid out of the room above the downstairs bedroom until 10am. That is when I got pissed and stopped being accommodating. Now we live on the ground floor and our loving it.

That's right where I used to live on Varick Street! (last row house, brown stoop)... Yes, it is the kids from the school. Once the school opened, about 4 months after I moved in, I really started to hate living there, in a way. I had kids hanging out on my stoop after school and they would leave me lots of garbage and sticky spills. A few times I would hear so much noise and look out the window and see 10 or more kids on my stoop and 10 or more kids on my neighbors stoop about to get into a fight. When I called the school to tell them about it they would say "call the cops," which I didn't want to do. I just wanted school security to make sure the kids moved it along after school and didn't mess with their neighbors. They are middle school kids! "call the cops".... yeah not feeling it.

HPNA is trying to get a list of volunteers to help clean up the litter.

Okay, this is a total stretch and little "alb" circa '08, but maybe if the local high schools could get involved and get the kids to help out with the picking up with the litter the problem might eventually chill because the kids will WANT TO keep it clean. I know in NYC students have to volunteer a certain # of hours per semester as a requirement. I'm not sure if that is true in JC, but it would be a great way to clean up the place, get the kids their hours, and teach them responsibility in regards to community and public spaces.

And I know, it's not just kids making the mess...

For an alternate, you could take Newark Ave to Palisades to River Road... Driving up River Road through Edgewater to Fort Lee. It might/probably will take longer but IMHO it's a nicer, safer, more inspiring drive. It might be worth it to compare a couple of routes and see what works best. Also, I find that my morning commute is half the time of my evening commute so I go a different way on the return.

Good luck and watch out for the potholes!
