Rich
Thanks for answering questions in such an open manner.
Here are mine:
First a caveat, for the financial questions I don't expect someone not already on the City Council to have a complete understanding of all the numbers, so feel free to state your opinion / best guess.
1. This week the capital of Pennsylvania filed for bankruptcy.
a. What is JC's financial situation as of today? What does it look like in the short term and long term future?
b. Are the pensions that city tax payers are responsible for fully funded? If not what kind of catch up payments need to be made? If a lot of money is needed in the short-term where do you propose to cut (or tax) to raise the money.

2. Long time readers of JClist have followed the trials and tribulations of various businesses trying to navigate the permitting processes required to open a business in JC.
a. Do you have any experience in the private sector?
b. What specific changes can be made to make JC more "business friendly?"

3. Should JC use tax credits or other enticements to lure big corporations to the city.

4. After living in JC for about 10 years, I have never seen a police office "walk the beat" (I live near Journal Sq.) Is this kind of policing impossible given the current staffing levels of the JCPD?

5. If money (and time) was not a consideration what would you do with the empty space next to the Journal Square path station.

6. In the real world, what kind of project would you promote in the empty space next to the Journal Square path station.

7. What is the biggest problem JC faces that the City Council cannot address?

There are two basic kinds of scams - the ATM version detailed here
http://www.snopes.com/fraud/atm/atmcamera.asp

and the credit card version which I believe the original poster is referring to. When you pay or swipe with a credit card an unscrupulous business can capture your credit card information and write that info to a blank credit card. Then the blank credit card can be used as a clone of the original card - it can be swiped with the bill going to you.

Usually this would happen if you give your card to someone and they don't swipe the card in front of you - like a waiter at a restaurant - as far as I know (and this info is a few years old and may be out of date) the thief would swipe your card in one machine, the actual credit card machine to charge you and then would need to swipe your card in a different cloning machine to do the copying... although it is probably all done by iphones now or something.

All things considered, how are JC's public schools compared to other medium cities?
I know they get a bad rap but what is the real story?

My 3rd quarter bill is up 3.9% (vs. 2nd Q 2011), assuming my 4th quarter bill is the same as my 3rd then for the year I will be up 1.97%
For those keeping score here are my yearly increases over the past few years

2011 1.97%
2010 15.0%
2009 8.1%
2008 0.1%
2007 7.2%
2006 12.4%
2005 0.0%
2004 0.0%
2003 1.5%
2002 -0.2%

I live in a condo near St. Peter's college.

currently is there anything going on with these warehouses? I agree that they bring more to the neighboorhood than more glass towers... but are they usable? or would they require a powerhouse type total gut rehab
btw what is going on with the powerhouse?

Check out this Hudson County map of murders in 2010, which is a fair proxy for serious crime in general for this area.

google maps

Draw your own conclusions, I live around the corner from one of those pinpoints and I consider my neighborhood to be pretty safe.

Updates on this story

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010 ... f_nj_police_firefigh.html

Residents of Hudson County formed the backbone of the practice, prescription records show. At least 40 Jersey City police officers and 27 city firefighters received hormones from Colao.
Smaller numbers of officers came from Bayonne, Hoboken and Union City. Fourteen more officers represented the county sheriff?s and corrections departments.

I was thinking the same thing, that JC's numbers seemed low. I looked up my HS's stats and they had 15 finalists. The total enrollment of that school district is 7,200 (k-12). While the school district is a bit of a odd situation due to it's close proximity to a large university it is not a selective school.

It does not change the fact that some kids are getting in because of their race, and some kids are not getting in because of their race.

However, given the shambles of JC public schools I will trade one bit of soft-headed do-gooder junk for a serious competitive school that cranks out kids ready to compete with the best in the world.

New NJ Pension Study
#79
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Abstract: "We're screwed"

In this study, we consider the case of New Jersey, which operates five defined benefit pension plans for
state employees.3 The New Jersey Senate unanimously passed legislation in February 2010 that would
put a question on the November ballot to constitutionally require the state to begin to make its full
annual payment to the state?s pension system....

The state reports that its
pension systems are underfunded by $44.7 billion...

...when plan liabilities are calculated in a manner consistent with private sector accounting New Jersey?s
unfunded benefit obligation rises to $173.9 billion.

http://mercatus.org/sites/default/fil ... 1031-%20NJ%20Pensions.pdf

p.s. Jersey City is not making its pension payments either.

Re: Christy Swiftly Vetoes Millionaires Tax Today -what happened to sermon about "everyone sacrificing?"

what I am saying is that taxing a millionaire at 8% or 10% or whatever the rate is, is just political back and forth. You could tax at any rate you want, when the politicians make promises like pensions and then don't fund those promises we are going to hit the wall when all the taxes in the world are not going to pay for it.

for whatever it is worth, I think we are smart enough to figure out tax rates that raise the most amount of income for the state in the most efficient manner possible. Trying to figure out what is fair with other people's money is not going to happen.

there will always be disagreements between the people who believe is it is fairer to tax higher incomes higher and those who think it is fairer to have lower taxes... in the end it will not matter, it is the spending that is sinking us.

Be it Jersey City or any other town in Hudson county, New Jersey or the USA, we have spent too much and made commitments to spend to much in the future. All the millionaires taxes or flat taxes or whatever will save us from the fact that massive, painful cuts in public and private spending need to take place.
