Hello! Instead of a regular meeting on Monday, 8/10, we will have a patrol in Bergen Lafayette with the Morris Canal Redevelopment and Communipaw Avenue Block Association. If you can help us out with the patrol, pls. reply to downtownjcwatch@gmail.com.

Remember, a patrol is a group of concerned residents creating a friendly presence in the neighborhood. We will check for graffiti, lights, and hot spots. The patrol will start at 7:30pm and end by 9pm.

Thanks!
Pam

Hello!

In honor of Det. Marc DiNardo's greatest sacricfice, his life, and to the commitment of community involvement, the JCPD is requesting everyone to wear a blue ribbon. We will have blue ribbons at our table for National Night Out. Below is a reminder that National Night Out will start tomorrow at 6:30pm at Enos Jones Park. We will begin our free raffle at 7:30.

Thanks to members: Jan, for getting 15 local businesses to donate free giveaways and to Al from www.listenandlive.com for the generous gift audio books. We will have many prizes for adults, kids, and pets as well!

If you are able to come and would still like to give something, please bring bananas for healthy giveaways at our table. If you can help out at the table with sign ups that would be great. Thanks again!

Reminder:
On Tuesday, August 4, 2009, neighborhoods throughout Jersey City are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities for the ?Annual National Night Out? crime and drug prevention event. Our intent is to involve each and every citizen of Jersey City in the events whether as individuals or, more hopefully, as part of an organized activity. Of course, we want everyone to be involved as they please and as is consistent with their role in the community. The event is also intended to promote PoliceCommunity Partnerships, Violence Prevention, Safety and Neighborhood Unity.

The East District's event will be located at Enos Jones Park (Brunswick St. between 8th and 9th Streets) from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

We hope to see you there.

On Newark Avenue: Philippine American Friendship Parade

Sunday, 6/28, is the annual Philippine American Friendship parade at 10am. What is different this year is that the parade is going down Newark Avenue. I think this is a great spot for a parade than the usual Montgomery (and shorter). But there is so much construction on Newark that many of the sidewalks are closed. Too bad!

Hope some people will enjoy! I will be there!

Please note that you can vote for your Democratic or Republican Committee Person in your District.

I would like to announce that I, Patricia (Pam) Andes, will be running for Democratic Committee Person in District 13 which covers Coles Street to Marin Blvd. from 5th Street to 3rd Street.

I am running with Harsimus Cove President, Eric Fleming, of 5th Street. Eric is constantly at City Hall watch "dogging" development projects and is active in so many areas of the community.

As Harsimus Cove Board Member and as co-organizer of the Downtown JC Watch, I feel that I can represent my District in the Hudson County Democrat Committee.

Please vote for Andes/Fleming tomorrow.

Thanks!

I live in Downtown and I do care who wins other Council seats that may give concerns on green space, use of abatements outside of downtown, and honest politics.

For this reason, I am supporting Rolando Lavarro who is a community activist that I have had the pleasure of working with. He is honest and by the book. He does not work for the city. He has attended the Downtown JC Watch patrol to learn skills that he can apply to other areas such as the Martin Luther King Blvd. (was his target area which by the way is not his ward).

He has been at Board of Education meetings hoping that they would grant a research proposal he proposed on behalf of a National organization on Drug prevention.

He has urged me to learn the code of ethics on Community Organization...thus I call him "honest and by the book".

I am not saying that he will save the Embankment with Fulop but I do believe that he will listen and see how our green space affects his green space by Rt.440.

He is nobody's yes man...and he certainly will let us know why he disagrees with us on issues. He's smart, sensible, and wants to build a better Jersey City.

So please, if you can join us for a Meet and Greet in Downtown, pls. email me!!!

Thanks!

Hello all! If you have not heard, Captain McDonough is retiring. I am hoping that he is running this next Captain's meeting so that we have the opportunity to thank him for all the ;hard work he has devoted to our district in response to our complaints and tears and shouts that we have shared with him. This is also a time for us to prepare for the summer where lots of activity is out and about. We will need to do more patrols and create "friendly" presences so that people know that you're block will not be compromised. Our next meeting will be on Monday, June 8th at 7pm at Grace Church, Erie Street and 2nd Street. Enter through the red doors on 2nd Street. We also will have a meeting in July. August 4th is National Night Out but I would still like to have a meeting if the Police are available. These are hard times so we will see people off of insurances, off of medications, off of self-help programs, and just isolated from any kind of support. People will turn to drugs and alcohol. And people will do desperate things to get them. I have received drug dealing reports in areas that have not seen drug activity in many years. So, please, support drug rehabilitation programs and volunteer for other social programs such as Women Rising, Dress for Success, Partners in Prevention, Urban League. Though many people feel the youth are the source of many problems, I find them to be secondary to the drug/alcohol addictions. But it is still important to support and build summer and after school programs. Once the societal level of problems reaches our own block, we must do everything we can to secure our homes, our families, our block. Create a presence by reaching out to your neighbors and make sure everyone knows each other. Creating a close knit block or condo, will create a presence. Create a presence at the PATH station by doing a "friendly" patrol. Nobody will commit a crime if there are too many "eyes" present. Tear down your urban walls that we have built that allow us to sit next to a naked person on the train without ever noticing they are naked. I am honestly one of those people. I notice nothing because I am so into my own world, headset, etc. But once you get off the train, open your eyes, remove your headsets/cell phone, and take note of things around you. Okay, I hope to see you all at the Captain's meeting so that we will all be prepared for the summer! Please RSVP to policeeast@jcnj.org if you can attend. Also forward any information you will be bringing up at the meeting. Thanks! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: east <policeeast@jcnj.org> Date: Mon, May 18, 2009 at 11:09 AM Subject: Captain's Meeting To: east <policeeast@jcnj.org> The next Captain's Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at M.S.4 (Bright and Varick St.). Hello all!

I'm bumping this up again because Rolando Lavarro is up for a runoff.

Rolando is/was on the Manzo team.

We have a chance to support another candidate in another Ward who is interested in bringing change and clean politics to Jersey City. We also have another chance to build a relationship with another Council Member.

I have worked with Rolando in a Youth Program and I can attest to his integrity, his "go by the book of non-profits bible" approach, and his community leadership.

I will be hosting a meet and greet in Downtown. I'll keep you posted.

The young guys removing signs this morning from doors were wearing Healy shirts.

As I drive down Garfield and Ocean on my way to West Side every day, it is a lot of area to cover rather than a random pocket of slashings of some crazy teens.

And 2,000 is a lot. Someone just told me that they saw the Healy signs slashed as well as the Manzo. I've noticed the Manzo during this past week.

I still would like to accuse Dan Levin...he's too clean and innocent of dirty politics...LOL!!!!

Well, if anyone is seen removing signs, they should be deal with....

WHoever is slashing the Manzo signs in Bergen Lafayette should be prosecuted.

I'm not on the Manzo camp but it's clear that there's a campaign to remove or slash their signs. As Radryan stated that this appears to be a Healy campaign tactic.

So whoever is seen removing or slashing signs should be
fined or prosecuted...

BTW...I am told that if the people are caught on camera then one can follow suit.

You can still file a police report.

When calling about a crime in progress, call 911. At the time, you may thought you were not hurt but you should have requested an ambulance. Once an ambulance responds then the police will also arrive. I say call 911 because you were almost hurt and even a jerky movement can set off a back or neck injury. I say this because it has happened a few times where people do not feel injured at the time.

If you definitely were not harmed in any way and you called the non-emergency number, 201.547.5477 then the operator types in the call. On the screen, the Police Dispatcherr sees that the crime has already happened and that you were not hurt. Crimes in the past: stolen autos, break ins, burglaries do not always get the same response as crimes in progress. One may have to wait for let's say a "shooting" or "armed robbery" incident in another area before a "crime in the past" is answered.

Therefore, it is not a priority but they are suppose to follow up on all calls. Even if it is much later.

Someone was hit just about 5 months ago on Grove and Newark by a reckless driver.

At any rate, I sent you an offline email to contact me so that we can process the report together. I will need some info.

Thanks!

As a Fulop supporter, as a Catrillo admirer, and as a friend of the person who voiced an opinion in a private email to her private list of friends (is it confirmed that it was a community email list?), I want to please ask that this person's email not be exposed for the person's privacy. This person is passionate and yes, probably misdirected by someone but this person merely asked friends to ask the Fulop campaign a list of questions. And, apparently somebody did ask. The person's email does not reflect this person as a whole who is well liked.

So that's that. Questions were asked and the campaign answered.

The End.

This is an unnecessary mudslinging thread.

Guy has been a community organizer for over 30 years! He has had so many successes and he inspires people to come together in this diverse community. The fact that he is a Republican should not be a negative thing

The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony which I attended was beautiful. The bird story happened in a blink of the eye that took the attention away from the sadness and depression we were all feeling on that 1 year anniversary. The media clinged on to the "bird" story to lighten up the tearful tragedy that we were remembering. I did not even know Guy was the person in charge. And I was right next to the pier that the birds landed on.

Though I support Steven Fulop as Councilman, I will not sling mud at Guy Catrillo to make Steven look better. They are both worthy opponents and bring different skill sets to the table. They are both very valuable to the community.

THE END!

Ward A Candidates for City Council
#84
Home away from home
Home away from home

I wanted to start this post to bring up Rolando Lavarro's candidacy for City Council in Ward A. I didn't see any posts specific to Ward A and I know a few JC Listers have family and friends in this area.

For those of you who haven't met Rolando, he is a seasoned community organizer. His work with Communities that Care Coalition and drug prevention is commendable as he organized blockwatches and informative events for parents.

He has approached Board of Education with potential research studies for elementary school kids that will show that the youth know more about drugs than we know. Thus, we need to address the problem. But the BOE did not want to do another research, especially one that may place a "face and identity" on our drug problems.

He has encouraged me to volunteer with the youth. He has assisted many community organizations especially the Filipino Veterans Equity where Filipino Veterans who fought for the U.S. but were denied benefits are requesting final compensation. Rolando and his wife, called, emailed, and collected signatures upon signatures to send to D.C. They were met with success in this long battle.

You will find him seeking Block grants or writing grants for the community. You will find him researching ways to identify and resolve social problems. I can go on and do the long list of non-profits that he as served...the point is he does his work!

He works at NJCU as a Associate Director of Grants and was (born?) and raised in Jersey City.

So please consider Rolando Lavarro for Ward A.

I was told that this was brought up at the Harsimus Cove neighborhood Association meeting (www.harsimuscove.org) and the following meeting, the church minister came to meet with angry residents. Unfortunately, none of the residents came to the meeting. However, I understand that the President was able to discuss their concerns. Summer is coming soon, so I'd suggest to start attending these neighborhood association meetings to be prepared.

Re: Steven Fulop for Council - Ward E
#88
Home away from home
Home away from home

This is very difficult for me because I adore Guy Catrillo and I would almost do anything for him. He is really the nicest person in town.

But I have been working with Steven Fulop on so many things even before he was elected. He is always working for us on a legislative level. Our neighborhood watch really wanted the cameras. The councilman found a way to have developments require them within months of meeting us. The councilman knew I volunteered with JC Filipino-American teens. He would attend our events to support the kids whether there were 2 kids or 300 kids. He was there.

I remember his first few months with the "i want the garbage bins" residents vs. "i don't want the garbage bins" residents. I saw him struggle with that one. We now know that it is an unending dance since it's an ever changing numbers game -- who ever has the most numbers wins.

When Brightmoments and others wanted to really look into Guardian Angels being in our neighborhood, other officials shied away but Fulop was there. When I needed support as I fought 2 cases in court on behalf of the community, Fulop wrote letters and made phone calls even though the last case was in the wrong court. I wanted legislation on shopping carts....a very boring request while he was working on *bling* legislation for double dipping and no pay to play.

When another resident wanted to get lighting, he looked into it with her and got her a free street lamp installed. Again...there's no *bling* in a street lamp installation but it's important to us. He attends our neighborhood meetings even when he has to tell us that there's no movement on our asks. He's been supportive of our request for green space and for our demands to stop the tax abatement "whores" in downtown.

And today, a resident from Ward F told me how Fulop was helping her (a former volunteer) on working on animal control accountability. I was like...wow...he's working for her and she's not even his constituent.

I am sure I am missing all the other times the Councilman has helped me....oh here's another one...how about the time he created an NJCU Sociology internship for my classmate! It just wasn't a boring internship but one where my classmate was in charge of her own event to help people in need. I was almost jealous that I didn't have the internship.

The point is...the man works hard and is smart. He knows how to find solutions and be up to date with legislative think tanks. Oh...and here's my transition to a Mayor. Dan Levin is a think tank.

Re: Dan Levin for Mayor

I've known Dan through the Harsimus Cove Neighborhood Association since 2004. He and the group were very proactive in keeping a developer in check and in working with the Embankment Preservation Coalition. I was impressed and learned a lot from Dan in community organization.

As a member, I've watched him propose cleaning up Jersey City politics with CIVIC JC which I secretly laughed at the idea to myself. Now that's it's 2009, I've joined his quest. I still get a lot of smiles from my homegrown JC friends when I tell them about cleaning up Jersey City politics. But there have been so many changes already in New Jersey that I do believe that it can be done in Jersey City. And I'm happy to hear that my "west side" friends feel the same. They've checked out the one jersey city campaign and really like what they see.

Oh...and in as much as he's a downtowner, his wife is JC homegrown. I often joke, that I was in "downtown" before it became "downtown" and Dan was also here before the "hoopla" of downtown came about.

Another important thing to mention is that Dan is car-free and one can see the entire family walking everywhere if not biking. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Mayor who actually believes in urban green space?

Though I'm quite impressed in the hits that this post gets, I'm just as impressed seeing Dan, Andrew, and Emilio talking and connecting to people on West Side Avenue. They're smart people with solid ideas. I don't need imaginary numbers and fantastical ideas. I like the when Andrew has papers that he pulls out to show real numbers and where the city can save money.

If you're interested in hearing more check out the "Get Out the Vote Rally" Monday, April 13th
