Re: Whole Foods in JC?

ok I guess I would say 90% of their fish is excellent - you do have to check and make a judgment call at times but they almost always have wild salmon (of some type - usually coho) and cod/scrod/haddock which is what I mainly buy. I also get a lot of shellfish (clams/mussels) and like anyplace those pre-bagged ones always have a bunch of broken/dead ones so I usually make them get out 2 or 3 bags and check them myself. I am trying not to eat too much Tuna or Swordfish (mercury content etc) but the stuff I have bought from there in the past is no different than any other store (not whole foods or farmer market quality but still totally fine)

I think that one of the biggest issue at the shoprite is that many of the people who work there are kids and don't give a @$#% (which is likely true at 95% of stores) and yes I would rather starve than go there the first weekend of the month- absolute mad house with people who are buying 2 and 3 carts full of food - but luckily I have seamless so I don't have to

I think its funny how crazy people are about shop rite. I go there pretty often and while its not a fun place to be on weekends its actually doesn't have bad food.

Their fish is actually excellent (assuming you know even a tiny bit about fish and ask what is fresh) and if you get there when the butcher is open (probably before 6 or 7 pm) you can have them custom cut and trim any meat you like (I find they generally cut things too thin likely to keep the price down and I prefer a thick steak/pork chop)

I am lucky enough to shop during the day in the week and its totally fine. There is a decent aisle of "health" food for gluten free/ organic dry goods etc and the while there isn't a ton of organic produce there is a standard selections (apples, pears, grapes, lettuces, potatoes, tomato, broccoli etc)

that being said I would love a Fairway or something just because I like to get a lot of more specialty items (currently I just get them when I am on the road for work or I have them delivered by fresh direct)

Totally agree - however, this season I've twice seen butchers/poulterers set up stalls once or twice and then disappear. Maybe there isn't the demand.
And yes, my goal for the day was to use the word poulterer in a written sentence.

we had that one fishmonger who came for almost a whole summer about 3 years ago now but only on the monday I think. I would love to see a fish person back....

Re: Towing from a legal driveway

We have had to call 3 x in the 9 m that we have lived in our new place (with a legal garage/driveway)

Almost the same story.... the no parking lines got taken away when they put in the new gas lines (or something) and apparently our neighbors are bigger jerks than most since its pretty easy to see the giant garage door that you are blocking and JCPA refused to put in new lines till the spring (bc the paint wont dry or something)

I have lived in DTJC for 10 years now (and only had a garage for 9 month) so I get it.. its hard to find parking but it really sucks when after paying probably $100K more for a condo with a garage you are stuck and have to play the whole blast the horn for 10 min or so as a warning, then call the parking authority, then cops finally show up 30 m later (and I get it...not an emergency to them) and then finally once they decide that its really blocking you they will call the tow truck.

I have never actually had someone towed because in the time that this takes (usually 2 hrs) the owner usually shows up with a pissy attitude about how dare I call the cops on them... I would just like for once someone to actually get a ticket so they get a little bit of the annoyance and pain I have to feel

really? I guess I have the opposite experience. I haven't really found anyplace with great sweets. Choc o pain is great for what they sell but you can't get pastries or something for a birthday there (I guess you could give a croissant with a candle but its not the same even though they are delicious and I basically make that my splurge every week!). I would love more of an italian bakery/ pasty shop or a good cupcake place. I tried the cupcake salon (now gone) and its was eh, the one in hamilton park was good but its gone too and I find cocoa stuff to not really ever hit the mark for me (but I have only bought at the farmer market so maybe it gets a little stale etc out in the open)

Spoke to my insurance person yesterday and they said that come renewal time pretty much everyone downtown is going to need to get this document...has anyone done it yet? (or gone the free route through the city) we tried to get additional flood insurance on our condo but this was what stopped us as no one could tell us who to call/how to get this document

I know its crazy but the meat and fish at shoprite are really good -- if you go when there is someone good there they will even help you select the best pieces. If you know what to look for I get great stuff there

they don't have much organic though (some meat but no fish)

Re: Morning commute

I worked in Allendale for the past 2 yrs and the ride out there was about 45 m - 1 hr in the morning but the ride home is the killer at 1hr 15 m - 1.5 most days (I worked 8:30 - 5 pm for reference). From Grove st area leaving at 7:45am it would take me approx 25 m to get to the 17 exit on rt 3 and then another 25 to get up 17.

I worked directly off of 17 in an office park so it was easy on/off but between the traffic on tonnelle by the secacaus rd exit/merge, going by the mall and that pinch point near the home depot (17/46/GSP area) it isn't a fun ride.

Taking GSP there hits the toll and home doesn't save too much time because you have about 10 miles of traffic to the GSP exit (on 17) and except for holiday time by the mall that means you already sat through 3/4 of the traffic and the devil you know (17) was almost always better to me than the one you don't

if you can get out of work at 4:30 you will get home in half the time - its so crazy what happens up there between 4:55 - 5:05

I would also advise using great caution in adding another 200 lbs of weight to an already cracking/over taxed roof...... I would definitely try and keep my body weight evenly dispersed (ie crawling around not standing up)

our roof is unfortunately leaking a bit due to the snow but can't be fixed until all snow is gone and the ground it totally dry (no one in their right mind would climb a 40 ft ladder in this mess)

if you did have internal access to the roof, the roofers said that the best thing to do is try and break up any ice around the drains since that is the biggest cause of damage (water seeping in since it has no place to flow)

you are taking a pretty big risk without a permit... yes there is always some one who gets away with it (just like parking at the corners) but there is always someone who gets booted and comes on here to cry

I would go get a stack of the $3 temp passes to keep on hand just in case of stuff like this... in my book spending $3 always beats spending $140 (or whatever it is for the ticket/boot combo)

anyone have any input on one of those faux fireplace looking heaters? We have a finish first floor rec room that gets chilly (only one zone on the heating and its right next to the kitchen which of course stays pretty warm in the evening when I am cooking)

we got a little delonghi ceramic blower tower and its not bad but I would prefer something a bit more permanent/stylish

the room is about 600 sq ft which seems to be problematic as most say 400 sq ft max

I wanted to update since I have since been back on a normal night.... MUCH BETTER!!! I had a feeling that the crazy crowd was to blame for the noodle issue before but you just never know. I headed over around 9:15 the other night (so right before closing and some places/servers can get a little huffy when you walk in)

They were super friendly, even though I was just getting take out they still seated me at the bar with water and some bread/garlic paste stuff (not sure exactly what that stuff is but I liked it)

I was able to try the ramen burger and got 2 hen fulls.... perfect noodles and I even re-heated one the next day (with a bit of water because it was totally solid....my only super super tiny complaint -- a bit more broth next time! fill that container up) and it was still delicious -super fast, delicious, hot and yummy

they also mentioned delivery starting soon which makes me VERY happy (even though I am only a few blocks away winter makes me hibernate at times)

Had a little birthday dinner with some girl friends at the new gastropub the other day - really great atmosphere and delicious food and drinks. Honestly everything tasted absolutely delicious and I really liked the portion size. The small plates are "small" but the perfect size to try something but not have a giant full plate of a 1000 calorie meal - the perfect little splurge that leaves you satisfied but not sluggish instead of a man why did I eat pants unbuttoned on the ride home. (but maybe thats just me an my own personal lack of self control)

We tried a few drinks - ruby, jack sparrow and woodford martini (really nice pour on the martini - enough for 2 glasses! not sure if that was a mistake or what but no complaints) and I found them nicely balanced - not sickly sweet (which could be an issue especially for the ruby) nor alcoholic fumes that knock you out in one sip

my one "complaint" would that the tater tots are more like croquettes (and totally delicious) but I was picturing more like a cheesy fries type thing and it definitely wasn't - we ordered them as something to share while waiting on the rest of the girls to show up and it was like 6 individual "tots"

also menu is not the same as what is listed online. There is an additional salad section that had an AMAZING lobster cobb - one of the best lobster dishes I have had in the area. Perfectly cooked lobster meat not stringy or rubbery just really nice with some thick cut pancette or bacon type "bits"

I am REALLY hoping that the grove street location will go back to the sandwich menu all day though.... don't get my wrong the small plate idea is great but sometimes you just want one of those fat juicy subs (and go back to take out at night too please!)

We went last night and I think that they are on the right track but definitely a few things to work out..... the flavors were really good but I think that the rush of people with in 30 min of the doors opening was a bit much for them to handle. I felt that our ramen wasn't as hot as it should be and the noodles were stuck together and a bit undercooked. The lamb ribs and the pork tea sandwich were really nice though as were the chicken meatballs in the a hen full ramen. I did like the broths though... I am definitely a fan of the shoyu and didn't leave a drop! The pork based one is too much for me but that isn't a UR issue as I have the same problem at most ramen spots (and I also don't really like cream based soups so its definitely a personal preference)

Overall I will definitely go back again and hoping in a week or so service will be smoothed out

I was at the fairway in paramus yesterday and they are doing surveys to decide where to put their next store.... I would rather fairway than either TJ or WF! TJ is nice but I can't really shop there for everything - its nice for snacks and some dry/pantry goods but it isn't a meal. WF is awesome but too expensive for my every day shopping.... Fairway is the best of both worlds - huge specialty good section, amazing hot bar/salad/pickles etc, meats & cheeses to die for, great fresh fish and organic meats etc not to mentioned really great selection of produce including some local stuff

my Fiance has this pretty great one of the water front as well as some street scenes -- its a huge panoramic that we get printed out on canvas so it doesn't have to be framed (which can be very expensive)

maybe I just eat a lot or entertain too much? even though I go to the grocery store at least 2 x per week and the farmers market downtown (in the summer/fall) at least once I couldn't carry my groceries home on the train.

Maybe if I was single and getting one chicken breast and one squash or something but I usually have at least 5 or 6 bags from each shopping trip and they are usually heavy!

for my taste I would much rather a fairway than TJ or WF though WF would be better since I prefer fresh meat/fish over pre-packed stuff that you get at TJ (though I do love the grains, sauces, and other dry goods at TJ)

oh and for the record I actually find the Shoprite fish dept to be really good... though this new any purchase over $25 has to be paid in advance thing is really not cool and has made me consider other options since I really don't have the time or patience to wait in their lines twice per trip

Buddy, you don't read very well. I've minded my business, for a long time. Until I was out there with kids (and no, im not one of those "think of the kids" people), and someone's dog was off leash and took a dump right next to us. My nephew almost fell right in it when chasing a frisbee. I approached the owner and politely asked them to pick up after their dog, and was summarily berated in front of other people and made to look like I was a bad guy. So game on.

Again, the few ruining it for the many.

And again, it's not important that it's a big open space. It's ILLEGAL TO DO IT. What part of this are you people having difficulty understanding?? Much like the OP complaining about being ticketed for things he should be ticketed for. What is wrong with you people??

You're of the typical "if it feels good to me, I'm going to do it" crowd. That's not how it works my friend.

I'm glad you had a positive experience with the dogs at the park, I truly do. Many of us haven't, when dealing with these few dog owners who feel entitled to do whatever they want.

And again, that's why they create dog parks and designated areas for dogs.

And again, if you're that concerned for your dogs exercise, it begs to ask why you bought one while living in such a densely packed neighborhood. It doesn't mean you just do what you want because of you're personal situation.

And yet again (see a theme here?), there are lovely, large dog runs in towns like Lyndhurst, Leonia, etc. Dogs can run wild and free all day.

If you don't have the means to get to these places, then AGAIN, it begs to ask what decision making process went into the decision to buy the dog in the first place. Answer: you wanted a dog, so you bought one.

Lack of preparation on your part does not constitute me giving a sh*t about your problems. The difference here is that the law is on my side. Period.

It's a large, self contained open space. It's a park. Let a dog be a dog and run around a little bit.

can anyone tell me more about this "lake" on colgate and 1st.... we are moving to colgate and 2nd in a few. We have friends at monmouth and 2nd and never noticed any water issues around there but I guess we never really go around the 1st st way since we currently live in harrismus cove so we come/go from the other direction.

After reading this I went over there to look around yesterday and noticed there was still flowing water at the curb which to me seemed like someone was pumping out or something since the water is pretty much gone from the rain yesterday

I asked a neighbor walking into his house what the story was and he said there was water but then asked where and i said in the house and he said no just the street.

So whats the deal? in heavy rains the street gets flooded w an inch or so? more? every rain? just "bad" storms?

I have been there twice now and we love it .... its definitely not a tex mex giant plate of rice and beans type place but for me that is a good thing.

my favorites have been the guac w the pork belly - those salty crispy little chunks with the smooth creamy guac are just amazing - why waste is on a chip! spoon it right in!

I also really enjoyed the halibut ceviche - good size portion (for a ceviche) and it was delicious

also loving the tacos - sort of like the taqueria style tacos so more small authentic mexican but really elevated with some of their ingredient choices....

oh and don't forget the sauces on the table -- I love the green one and the chipotle the red was a bit too hot for me (but my BF loved it)

I agree on the sangria- portion was a bit small for the price and that the service is still working out the kinks (our first time there our queso order never arrive and our second time things came out in what i would say was an odd order) but I will 100% be going back very soon and often - its not a cheap place but I wouldn't call it a once a year splurge either.... definitely date night appropriate/girls night etc
