"If it isn't broke, don't fix it."

It's plainly obvious that Healy has not the slightest intention of trying to sway the typical Fulop voter, and will attempt to win by via association with Obama and by scaring minorities.

If this extension doesn't make any stops in NJ aside from Secaucus it's not worth it. A subway stop in union city would transform that area virtually overnight.

Close off Newark Ave to traffic between Grove and Erie (eventually Jersey) and make it a pedestrian mall complete with restaurant seating areas in the middle of the road. Then demolish the Morlee's building and make that area into a plaza, maybe with a fountain or something.

With the right vision, Newark Ave could be a destination and not just our local restaurant row. Of course, this would drive further gentrification, which would weaken the machine, so it will be opposed.

I'm convinced that somebody got away with arson and the authorities were in on it. After the fire, they demolished the building so fast (like 48 hrs) that there's no way a thorough investigation could have been performed.

If legally possible, the city should sell the Loew's with the stipulation that it needs to be used as a music venue (no cults allowed) and the interior and exterior historical trimmings need to be preserved.

It has no future as a museum unto itself -- the location and amount of space are just too valuable.

The right artists can SELL OUT the Loew's right now for multiple nights. This is what happened a year or so ago with the Jeff Mangum shows, which were amazing. I really don't understand why there aren't more music acts there unless it's actually really hard to find an act that will sell tickets while at the same time having a well-behaved audience who will sit during the shows.

I really think the Loew's has more of a future not as a throwback movie palace but as Hudson county's best music venue. It'll be a hard decision but I think the seats need to go so people can drink while they watch the act.

That the city puts such a low priority on effectively dealing with its MAJOR garbage/litter problem is a tacit admission that this place is trash, and it weighs on the minds of its residents. Solving this problem would be a great step toward having some more respect for ourselves.

I happen to agree with that. If the JCPD were to start enforcing basic laws (no double parking blocking traffic, leash and curbing of dogs, loitering, noise and curfew laws) that would have the consequence of putting people on notice that the police is not going to sit idly by and let people misbehave. I think people start to modify their behavior enough to lead to a more civilized environment. One thing is certain, doing nothing, or continuing to do the same as now, will not lead to a better result. As the broken windows theory has been proven: when people assess their surroundings, and determine that they do not need to follow certain rules or behavior, they will do just that.

The basic example, and the one studied over and over, is that of littering. In many studies, when a subject is faced with a choice to litter, or not, that person was significantly more likely to litter when he found himself in an area that was already littered. I think that is part of the endemic problem in JC: many people have already "learned" that littering is OK. I think a massive public campaign targeting quality of life issues, couple with heightened enforcement by the JCPD, is what we need.
that's a compelling argument right there

Re: Future of Newport Mall

Something could be done to fix the pedestrian crossing from Newport Mall to the PATH station at Washington blvd, which is chaos at rush hour. The timing of the traffic light favors the cars too heavily and the pedestrians get sick of waiting and just start crossing whenever there's enough safety in numbers.

Apparently the steel structure next to the Newport PATH was going to be part of a never-built pedestrian overpass. They ought to build the overpass, or else dig a new tunnel directly from the mall to the PATH platform (anyone coming from the west currently backtracks quite a ways).

I live in one of the Bayonne-style houses, and the certificate on the first floor says it was constructed in 1976, which is a bit more recent than I would have thought.

I've always wondered about Manila Avenue's history. From about 8th Street down to the block containing Grove Bicycle and Park & Sixth is in my opinion one of the ugliest stretches in Downtown Jersey City. The housing stock is almost exclusively those strange Bayonne-style houses.

Meanwhile, the blocks surrounding this stretch are mostly filled with historic rowhouses. Does anybody know what was on this stretch of Manila Ave before the 1960s or so (which is when these houses were built, I presume)? Why was it all demolished? I imagine it must have been done by the same homebuilder, as it is obviously reflected in the architectural designs.

Oh that's good news. Turnout downtown will be key to a Fulop win, and downtown turnout is probably more a matter of combating apathy than it is in the other wards, and apathy is something that campaigning can actually affect.

I haven't seen the Healy video van yet - is Fulop going to use something similar?

How does voting for mayor work? Is it the city-wide popular vote that matters, or is there an electoral college type system where the wards are won individually? If it's the former, it makes a ton of sense for Fulop supporters to focus on turnout downtown, in the latter case he should almost ignore downtown because he's a shoe-in.

Looks like the newer construction stuff in Hoboken. Agree that it's boring but if there are ground level storefronts and restaurants it will be great for the neighborhood.

A good question is whether a light at Erie and 8th is part of the plan -- traffic already backs up during rush hour and this building will break the camel's back, but I'm guessing there's alot of NIMBY opposition to a light there.

If this is SimCity, it's like the mayor chose to under-fund the garbage collection and we all get to live with the consequences.

Not to derail the thread, but this makes no sense. There's way too much hit-and-run around here for this ever to work. I would *love* to see more pedestrian crosswalk stings by the JCPD. Drivers (and people in general in jersey city) need to learn the hard way that rules have to be followed even if they're inconvenient, especially if you're in charge of an inherently unpredictable beast or a 2000 lb go machine.

She knows full well that the cops here don't give a shit about quality of life issues, and that for practical purposes, "no dogs off leash" is just a suggestion, just like not throwing garbage out of your car, putting household trash in the public cans, or coming to a full stop at a stop sign is.

Someone please tell me how we can instill some respect for the commons into adults, because I fear it's nearly impossible.

Seconded X infinity. If there's one thing NJ natives absolutely hate, it's being called out on how ignorant and irresponsible their driving is. There will always be a huge blowback against any program that attempts to correct the criminal driving practices that are commonplace here, and this is one of the few areas in which I recommend that politicians ignore their constituents because the population at large is just plain wrong.

I also applaud the JCPD on some of the traffic enforcement efforts I've noticed recently, and in keeping with this support I decline to mention the areas that seem to be targeted.

Quote:

fat-ass-bike wrote:
Love to see more red light cameras and would love if someone invented a failing to stop at a STOP sign camera. If correctly installed and operated, it will only give you a ticket after you commit the offence - which would mean you are guilty. The cameras will also show who ran the light or STOP sign if there is an accident involving other vehicles and pedestrians. Being accountable when no law enforcement authority is watching obviously upsets some, but makes others happy.
Motorists can still argue in court if they feel there is a fault with the camera, which could only mean that the cameras were set-up incorrectly - I think the system is great as we will never see a cop at every set of traffic lights to watch ass-wipes being impatient

I'm all for a 100% moratorium on re-naming streets in Jersey City and on sub-designating certain blocks, unless doing so means fewer errors in the mail and fewer confused out of towners. The existence of "Manila Ave" is stupid. So is the existence of five discontiguous sections of Pavonia Ave.

I'd like to hear some more specifics. "Community policing" is a catch-all term that sounds nice but is meaningless. What quantifiable goals do you support? What specific crimes will receive more attention? Do you intend to expand the force or increase its productivity or both? What are your intentions budget-wise? What do you think about "broken windows"?

Challenger to Jersey City mayor announces anti-crime plan

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
February 06, 2013 at 10:00 PM

The mayoral campaign of Jersey City City Councilman Steve Fulop today revealed its plans to combat crime in New Jersey's second largest city.

Increasing community policing, emplying more civilians to fill administrative roles and boosting communincation between police officers and community groups are among the items Fulop's camp believes will lower crime.

Fulop told The Jersey Journal that he feels he would be able to implement his plans without raising taxes significantly.

"Community policing doesn't require extra money. It requires a commitment," said Frank Gajewski, a former Jersey City police chief and Fulop's council candidate in Ward A.

Campaign polling has shown crime is the top concern for city residents, Fulop said. And residents feel that crime is getting worse despite statistics showing a decrease in crime in recent years.

"There's a huge difference between safety in some neighborhoods and safety in other neighborhoods," Fulop said.

Fulop is challening Mayor Jerramiah Healy in the May 14 city race. Former high school and college basketball star Jerry Walker has also announced he plans to run for the city's top job.

The Fulop campaign's seven-page anti-crime platform includes increased street patrols; the creation of a force comprising officers who will have police powers but will be either retired cops or trainees in the police academy; and a change in the boundaries of the police districts.

The campaign said it also intends to require police leadership to live in Jersey City. State statute forbids a ban on police officers who live elsewhere, but Fulop said he can require it of police brass who have appointed positions.

Fulop praised the Police Department, saying it does "an effective job," adding that "you can always strive to be better."

Healy campaign spokesman Joshua Henne, asked to comment, said the mayor has helped bring the city's homicide rate down to historic lows, without laying off cops. Henne added that police officials already meet with community groups.

"Mayor Healy wants to keep the progress going, and that's why his administration is constantly seeking input from the public and is committed to doing everything possible to continue making Jersey City a safer place," he said.

Re: No Smoking! officials considering smoking ban for parks

For the most part this won't affect Jersey City residents, especially downtowners. As a former smoker my feelings are mixed -- these bans come with good intentions, but they're essentially unenforceable (in a universal sense), and all such laws lead to cat & mouse games and invite discriminatory enforcement.

Quote:

user1111 wrote:
Smoking may soon be banned in Hudson County parks, with the Board of Freeholders set to vote as early as next week on a plan to force smokers to light up elsewhere.
New York City banned smoking in its parks and beaches in 2011, and Freeholder Bill O'Dea said he thinks the measure, first proposed by the Hudson County Integrated Municipal Advisory Council, would send the right message.

"I don't think it's good for somebody to be sitting on a bench smoking cigarettes when there are little kids running around," O'Dea said.

The county's legal team is reviewing the measure to determine if the ban would apply to diners at Casino in the Park, located in Lincoln Park in Jersey City.

Non-smokers strolling through Stephen R. Gregg/Bayonne County Park and Lincoln Park yesterday were supportive of the plan. Stephanie Manalastas, 42, of Jersey City, said banning cigarettes would be a "good thing."

"I don't want to be inhaling their fumes," said Manalastas, who frequently visits Bayonne Park to walk her dog, Sushi.

Laura Sariego, 64, of Jersey City, is a smoker, and not surprisingly does not want to be forced out of the park when she wants to smoke.

"It's a public place where I should be able to do what I want," Sariego said. "They're banning it everywhere."

The county operates eight parks: the aforementioned Lincoln and Bayonne parks, as well as Columbus Park in Hoboken, James Braddock Park in North Bergen, Washington Park in Union City and Jersey City, West Hudson Park in Kearny, Laurel Hill Park in Secaucus and Mercer Park in Bayonne.

Both Manalastas and Sariego said they wouldn't mind designated areas in county parks where smokers can light up. O'Dea said he, too, would support such a plan.
"I don't think it's practical that we would be enforcing it everywhere in the park," he said. "I just don't think it's realistic to do."

The freeholders' next meeting is next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
