Re: Journal Square: The statue of Peter Stuyvesant - will it get ornamental use?

The intersection of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street is also known as Bergen Square. It was the center of the Dutch settlement on this side of the Hudson in the 1600s and 1700s.

Excellent, Neverleft! Thank you. I did not know about that brochure or that quote.

Do you have that brochure? If you do, please PM me.

Yes, Stuyvesant was intolerant, even by Dutch standards of the time. That's why his weirdo ideas about restricting religious practice in New Netherland failed.

Martin Luther King Jr. has been my hero all of my life. Peter Stuyvesant has not.

In 1650, Peter Stuyvesant was Director General of New Netherland, having taken over from Willem Kieft, an incompetent, wrong-headed man who fueled the Dutch-Indian wars. Stuyesant attempted to bring order to the thriving, growing settlement and mandated that a fort be built in the western highlands between the rivers. The outline of that fort's center stockade can still be seen in the cut-outs at Bergen Square, the intersection of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street.

The impact of the Dutch settlement of this area is alive today, though few people understand its extent. For that reason alone, Stuyvesant's statue should have stayed at Bergen Square.

Seventy years ago and longer, developers tore down 17th century Dutch houses, one after another, to build new buildings. No one had the vision to establish archeological sites, much less value history for the sake of itself.

I cannot imagine why the statue of Peter Stuyvesant needed to be removed. The fact of the history of that place remains.

MLK worked to undo the legacy of the slave trade that the Dutch exploited to the fullest. Only through understanding history can we hope not to repeat it. These men are linked through history. Could have been a great academic project for the students of P.S. 11.

its crazy that the most descriptive characteristic (race) is left out

One of the few reasons the Jersey Journal does not put race/ethnicity in the articles is the few times they do they turn out to be wrong. Witnesses are very unreliable. The last time they did post an ethnicity was when the man in Kearny was killed in an armed robbery a few months ago, they described the suspects as Hispanic males. It turned out none of them were Hispanic and three White males were arrested. That was not the first time either.

Another reason is JC/HC is very diverse and you would be surprised at how many people can't tell the difference between different races and ethnicity's. I have heard people in the past assume some Guyanese (Indian decent) and Phillipinos to be Black, Arabics and Italians to be Hispanic. Many times this is done by people that assume only certain groups dress a certain way.

why don't they just say what the witnesses said they saw:
"The victim described their attacker as white, male, about 6' tall, in his late 30s or early 40s, with a red and black tattoo on his right inside wrist."
If the description is wrong, it's not their fault.
Whenever I describe somebody as white, people laugh. We have to get past that already. To me it sounds odd and incomplete - they're trying to describe someone without describing them.

Some things are more worth protesting than others.

Where a need for a key product or service is deep, the last provider is leaving, and local resources to replace is are low or don\'t exist, a community protest makes sense.

Imagine being infirm, having no car, being on a fixed income and your bank is a challenging but doable walk away. And then, it closes its doors and the next one is almost a mile further away.

I've come to use Moloney's for my pork and beef, sometimes lamb. They are a true butcher, not just a meat market. The product is fresh and good quality (while not organic).

I recently bought 3 or 4 country ribs still together and roasted it in one piece. It was mouth-watering.

They would definitely have the bones, especially earlier in the day. I think they close at 5pm, on Saturdays anyway.

They don't? I guess you were so busy braying you didn't notice that Florida has been a key swing state in presidential elections.

I'll spell it out:

U.S. federal positions on international, State Department issues are not dictated by Cuban Americans.

Another way of saying it is:

While Cuban Americans have influence on (not control of) some Florida politics, they are not responsible for the U.S. government's relationship with Cuba.

Re: Question About Bergen Avenue

Hate that bus, you mean the Bergen Avenue bus, right? Totally unprofessional drivers, infrequent and unpredictable service, like two busses on the whole route, every bus packed to the rafters. Did I say rude-a// drivers? I've been booted off that bus because I asked the driver not to text while he was driving. NO KIDDING! I worked it so he ejected me at my stop. But people were looking at me like I had two heads because I expected him not to curse at me over it.

I have been living in McGinley Square since 2005. The Vietnamese restaurant is really good. I like having a Dunkin Donuts (same block), even though the coffee is just ok. Lee Sims Chocolates are outstanding (same block). Couple of super 99 cent stores, and don't say you don't like getting your toilet paper and paper towels at 70% of regular retail.

Neida's breakfast/lunch counter and bakery has great cafe con leche at $1.25. Hello. Ed's Salvage Co., community thrift store, on Fairmount, is wonderful. Laundry at Monticello and Fairmount is clean and run like a machine (only good one around there, imo.) Imago Salon (Bergen at Reed) has a full line of Aveda products. Next door is moving in a new Italian deli and grocery in a month or so; can't wait.

There's lots more to love.

If you're on FB, join the group called "Uptown Crew" and share the love.

Yeah. Between Magnolia and Trenton, Waldo and Chestnut. Really nice area, pretty quiet, and you can walk to JSQ or downtown.

Supposedly, this happened on Baldwin Ave. which is more Hilltop or even JSQ.

I guess I'll be able to find it, but the article says it's NOT on Newark Avenue but on a side street (doesn't say which one), then at the end it gives a Newark Avenue address, which is inexplicably not part of the photograph.

Yeah, they put up with it, but then they take it out on themselves with their "crappy is good enough" low standards and calling out people who actually try to make things right.

So Blumpkin, it's ok with you that the son put his mother at risk with his illegal activity in her home and wouldn't respect her decision that he needed to move out because of it? But she's a rat.

Bass ackwards, dude.

The "don't rat" thing has gone way too far, in general, and this is a good example.
You don't rat on your own WHAT?

As his mother, it had to be hard, even if he is a sex offender and lazy/inept thief. She's got his stolen City property in the house. Who knows what else she was putting up with day to day?

She's fed up and tries to set some healthy boundaries, gives him the chance to take his BS elsewhere. But no.

What social rule says you have to take the heat for someone's way risky, illegal idiocy?

(Caveat emptor: I don't know these people. This is just how it looks to me.)
