This is too funny! Just this afternoon, while driving around, my niece pointed out to me that those white flowers smelled like fish! We started to call them "fish flowers" but I didn't actually stop to smell the, uh, flowers. Maybe that's a good thing. (Though now I'm *really* curious!)

You may've seen this Harry Potter hit, but have you seen the action come to life on the nation's largest IMAX Dome Theater? Come together with other muggles to re-live the action before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince comes out this summer!

See the trailer and learn more about the characters here.

Wow, this is a much better lineup than last year's! I'm definitely going this time.

Was there a discount for JC residents last year (and will it be implemented again this year) .... or did I just imagine that?

What a huge lineup! There are at least a dozen bands (Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Elbow, Silversun Pickups, to name some) that are every bit as good as the headliners. I went to Bumbershoot in Seattle last year and this lineup is much stronger. Transportation issues aside, this should be a great weekend for the city.

An Hour to Help Save the Earth
By Sewell Chan

For one hour on Saturday evening, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., exterior lights will shut off at a score of New York City landmarks, including the Empire State Building, the New York Public Library, the United Nations headquarters, City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge. But New Yorkers need not worry ? we hope ? about a recurrence of the citywide blackouts of 1965, 1977 and 2003.

The lights are being shut off intentionally as part of a worldwide observance of Earth Hour, an event that began in 2007 in Sydney and was organized by the Australia chapter of the World Wildlife Fund.

As our colleagues at the Green Inc. blog noted earlier this week, the event will start in Fiji and then roll around the globe by time zone throughout the day. Cities slated to participate include Cape Town, Chicago, Copenhagen, Dubai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Las Vegas, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Manila, Mexico City, Moscow, Nashville, Oslo, Rome, San Francisco, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto and Warsaw.

?This will be a pivotal year in the future of our planet as we look to Congress, President Obama and global leaders to take immediate and decisive action on climate change,? Carter Roberts, chief executive of the World Wildlife Fund, said in a statement. ?Having New York City go dark for Earth Hour will send a powerful message to the world that the U.S. is ready to assume a leadership position in solving one of the most serious challenges facing our planet today. By turning out the lights, the people of New York City will be casting a vote in support of the future of the Earth.?

The actor Edward Norton is the official ambassador for Earth Hour 2009.

While most of the New York sites participating in Earth Hour this year are well-known landmarks, others are more unexpected. The Thomson Reuters, Nasdaq, Chase and Coca-Cola signs in Times Square will be dimmed. Other participants include Angels & Kings, the East Village nightclub opened in 2007 by the musician Pete Wentz, and several major building developers and investors, including Tishman Speyer Properties, Silverstein Properties and Monday Properties.

Earth Hour in JC and NYC?
#67
Home away from home
Home away from home

Is anyone in JC doing this tonight? We are! I'm also wondering if NYC is officially doing it. Many major cities around the globe are doing it and I hope NYC will, too.

http://www.earthhour.org

VOTE EARTH
YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world?s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote ? Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome?s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you?re from, but instead, what planet you?re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

Thank, Althea & Steve, for setting this up.

Would you happen to know which office/dept sent out that letter? I'd much prefer to contact them to see whether or not a letter was sent to us, and more importantly, if we are required to make these changes.

Quote:

Our office doesn't have a copy of the letter, but perhaps someone who received it wouldn't mind sharing.

Councilman Fulop decided to bring all the parties into the same room so there isn't the frustration of mixed messages or figuring out who to hunt down to get information. This should also cut down on the time the City employees have to individually explain the policy.

However, this will be a learning experience for our office as well as this seems to be a very complex issue and each building receiving the letter has different issues.

Your building probably is up to code if you guys did not receive a letter. Not all buildings are receiving this letter.

Re: Want to learn more about JC
#70

Funny, I just gave some JC-housing advice to a friend's friend who is also considering moving to JC from Manhattan.

1. Which are the safest, most sought after areas?

Can't really say what the "safest" areas are, but based on #3, it sounds like you'll like the Paulus Hook, Van Vorst, Harsimus Cove and Hamilton Park areas of downtown JC.

2. How is parking?

Some folks would rather pay for parking, which starts at about $160/mo at one of those public parking lots, to avoid the headache of looking for spots and having to move their car 3-5 times a week, but I have been parking my car on the street in the VVP area for several years now. Some blocks are harder to park on than others, especially if there is a church, bar or restaurant nearby. Another issue for residents is theft and break-ins, which tend to happen more frequently during the warmer months in many parts of town.

3. If we were hoping to get a 1 BR in a brownstone/non-high-rise building, preferably with some outdoor space, hardwood floors, what kind of rent would we be looking at?

Generally, the closer you are to the waterfront (Exchange Place, Newport, Harsimus Cove) and to the PATH stations (Newport/Pavonia, Exchange Place, Grove Street and Journal Square) the higher the rents. I suggest you look at listings on CL and here to get an idea of rents. Also, don't rule out brokers because there seems to be more no-fee and half-fee apt listings these days due to the slow rental market.

4. What is the Restaurant/Bar scene like?

We definitely have enough bars and restaurants throughout JC that you can eat and drink out every night of the week if you so desire. There's a pretty good variety also, so we can't a singular "scene" per se. You can definitely eat or drink at any price point and with different crowds in any given week.

Good luck with your search and an early "welcome" to the hood!

Thanks for the heads up!

I hope they reopen it, too. I never bothered going to the statue until about 5 years ago, when my in-laws came to visit from the West Coast. When I finally made it to the statue, we only made it up to the observation deck, and it made me sad that I never took the time to visit the statue in the 2 decades or so that I'd lived in JC. I'll definitely be one of the first ones to go up to the torch when they reopen the crown section!

Grovester, I'm in the VVP section and I think we may have the same mail carrier. He's a great guy but he tends to slam our door also (even after I gently reminded him not to on several occasions). I think this is simply his way of ensuring that all doors are closed properly behind him.

BTW, we seem to have gotten a temporary mail carrier 2 weeks ago. 2 Fridays ago, I came home to see all my my and my neighbors' mail strewn about on the floor. We have one of those wall mailboxes and ours was empty. It happened again the following Saturday and Monday, though it promptly stopped after I put a note on our door.

Did this happen to anyone elsea in the VVP area?

I've been w this bank since I was a teen-ager working after school and on weekends at Newport Mall, and stayed w it through its transition from NatWest to Fleet and now BoA.

Next time you're in the Newark Ave branch, look for Kathy. She's friendly, helpful and careful (albeit slow at times, though maybe that's a result of her meticulousness). Whenever possible I try to deal only w her. But I agree that the other workers (excluding the tellers) are pretty clueless and incompetent

Finally made the trek to MWL a couple of weeks ago, and was very pleased with their pastries and coffee. I ended up getting 2 boxes of assorted cookies, muffins scones as presents for friends, and suffice it to say that the recipients were very happy and grateful for the goodies.

I'm sad to see Priscille (and Ground) go, but I'm happy to have this organic bakery in town. I might even sign up for a cooking/baking class or two.

There was a story on 20/20 that featured a man who evaded parking tickets in the 5 boros for years. All he did was put black electrical tape on his license plate to change some of the characters (ie, F to E or 0 to 8) and double parked, or parked in front of hydrants or in red zones throughout NYC. Of course some unfortunate NYers ended up getting his parking summonses and didn't know until they were interviewed for the story how in the world they were getting those summonses in the first place.

All the Filipino restaurants in JC are turo-turo (or fast food) and none are cooked to order. Of these, I like Casa Manila on Newark Ave and Fiesta Grill on Westside.

For dessert or pastries, you may also want to take your friends to the Philippine Breadhouse on Newark Ave or Red Ribbon further west on Newark. You're welcome.

I'm another happy and loyal customer of Studio 17. Though to be honest, I only let my hair done by Nguyen /Wynn or Ken (the owners), and not by any of their other stylists. Although the salon takes walk-ins, I would recommend making an appointment with either of them to make sure you don't get shuffled off to the other stylists.

We had some free time this afternoon, so Mr. JCI and I decided to visit LSC to watch Mummies and maybe check out the exhibits (he hasn't seen the Skyscrapers exhibit yet).

We ended up staying just for the 45-minute film because it would've otherwise cost us $52.50 total for parking ($7) and the Imax + Exhibition combo ($22.75 each). That's just redonkulous!

I don't know if I'll be back there anytime soon, and certainly not with my nephews and nieces (who I think would most benefit from a visit there).

What does joining the army have to do with being a Councilman?

I'm very pleased with Fulop as well, but not for that reason. He is very accessible and highly responsive, has helped me as a constituent on several municipal problems, and has shaken up JC council on many issues I am personally concerned with.

I probably won't be around as a JC resident when he runs for Mayor, but I still have many friends here whom I would gladly talk to about him when the time comes.

I've live around the corner for 5 years now

The good:
- Proximity to Grove St PATH
- Proximity to Liberty St Park
- Taqueria Downtown
- Legal Grounds
- Edward's Steakhouse
- Shops and restaurants on Grove
- Cocoa Bakery & Cafe on Grand to open soon
- Other shops in Liberty Harbor North coming
- Haven't heard any muggings or violence in that area in a year or two (last one I heard was a mugging on Grove & York about 2 yrs ago)

The bad:
- Noise from buses, trucks, ambulances, cop cars, and civilian cars blaring loud music
- Parking
- Construction

The ugly:
- Flooding on the corner of Grand and Grove. Big issue if you are considering a garden/basement apartment

Yay! We've been waiting for shops to open in Liberty Harbor North! We noticed the COCOA sign in one of the storefronts during the JC studio tour last weekend.

My friend and I were trying to guess what the new business was going to be: she said it would be a spa, I figured it would be a coffee shop or dessert place. Ding ding ding!

So when is the grand opening? I'm getting hungry thinking of yummy pastries!
