Jersey City on list of 20 Great American Cities for Writers
#61

I was just looking for other cool cities, exploring some options and stumbled on this list of 20 Great American Cities for Writers and the list includes JC. Do we agree? How many of you are like me and make your living as writers? What resources does JC have for writers?

The pastries are excellent here too. She makes the croissants in house but the other pastries are delivered from Amy's Bread in Manhattan. The scones are absolutely delish.

Chimney contractor needed - Any recommendations?
#63
Home away from home
Home away from home

I need to find a contractor familiar with the type of chimney we have in our DTJC condo which is a typical 4-story brick row house conversion. Each unit has its own boiler which vents into a shared aluminum chimney and said chimney appears to have been venting inadequately for quite some time (killing one boiler and threatening to kill another one with accumulated soot, etc.).

Can anyone recommend a knowledgeable chimney professional? I need someone who will do more than just clean the duct work. I am super concerned about carbon monoxide and need to make sure this is venting properly for the safety of all in the building.

Many thanks!!!

Where can I get ice melt that won't ruin my stoop (again)?
#64

Last winter's ice and scrambling for salt during the shortages left my sidewalk and stoop in pretty bad shape. I hired a contractor to repair the cracks, replace missing concrete, paint and waterproof the stoop but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. He told me not to use rock salt. Upon more research, it appears that the best product to use is *calcium* chloride but most commercial ice melts seem to have *magnesium* chloride as well which I think damages concrete. Does anyone have info on this and perhaps a recommendation of a brand and/or source for ice melt? I'd like to stock up on whatever is safest and not be left scrambling during a storm.

Looking for a caulking pro

In search of someone who can really do a very neat job caulking... We have a glass sunroom that needs to be caulked. Everyone I've ever hired in the past has done a terrible job... globs of caulk everywhere and since it's on glass it really shows. Can anyone recommend someone who does a neat job with silicone caulk? Maybe a handyman or general contractor up to such tasks?

I've been taking several pre-natal yoga classes over the last 8 months.

Michelle Goitia is a doula and teaches 2:

Three Little Birds Thursday evening

JCMC Sundays at 11 a.m.

I've also really enjoyed Jessica's class at Yoga Shunya on Saturday afternoons.

Since your municipal taxes fund the library (mostly), I think it's totally fair to provide proof of residency. Just bring a PSE&G bill and an ID. A small price to pay for so many free services!

Sounds like the OP is also peeved that the library is not open all the time. I know that at the height of the recession, library funding was cut and furlough days led to intermittent library closures. If anything, we should be calling on our legislators to fund libraries more fully so residents have more access to library resources. Word bookstore with its (by nature) limited inventory is no substitute for the vast inter-library loan network, and many other resources provided by the library.

To the OP, I don't think cutting funding is going to improve your library experience. JC is lucky to have a thriving library system. Some cities have lost their free libraries (Erie County in NY for example went bankrupt and residents now have to rely on poorly managed private membership libraries).

I've lived many places and always had a card at the local library. I find the JCPL to be an average public library. I also have NYPL card and you have to provide more than your driver's license to get a card and you have to renew your card ever few years, just as at JCPL.

I've always found the staff at the JCPL very helpful (every branch I've used)! I agree that their website could use a revamp. But the onus is on you to find out what you need to apply for a card before you visit.

Re: Maternity department in hospitals near JC area

I'm expecting my first in March and am planning to delivery at Jersey City Medical Center. We went to the "baby fair" a few months ago and toured the maternity ward, which was newly renovated and we were sufficiently impressed. The only negative is that their C-section rate is around 50% but they pointed out that this is on par with statewide C-section rates which is true.

My midwife, Teresa Brennan-Turi, is in the same practice with Dr. Yousry mentioned by another poster and we are hoping that her philosophy allows us to have a natural birth. I know that JCMC has new hydrotherapy tubs for use during labor and Teresa Turi has doppler fetal monitors for use in water as well as other tools that will aid in a natural birth.

Several members of the birth and baby community in JC have told me that JCMC has made great efforts to improve their maternity services including the WHO baby friendly initiative mentioned by the other poster. All babies "room in," you are assigned one nurse for the length of his/her shift and they do everything directly after birth to make breastfeeding a success.

We are also comforted by the fact that there is a NICU there and JCMC is a level 4 trauma center (I think that's the term). In other words, if you birthed at Hoboken and something went seriously wrong, they would transfer you to JCMC.

And, finally, I personally don't want the stress of getting caught in traffic on 1/9 or Route 3 during labor so I'm really glad there's such a great hospital so close. Needless to say, I still haven't delivered there so this info is just based on my research not on personal experience, FWIW.

Re: Parking a rental car on the street without a permit?

Thanks for all the input. I didn't get a ticket yesterday but I guess I was just lucky. I will get some of those temporary permits again. I had a bunch but they expired. :(

I was sort of waiting to see what Fulop did with the Parking Authority. Hopefully they will be able to take cash and sell you more than 3 at a time. Oh, and wouldn't it be nice if the Parking Authority actually had parking for people going to buy parking permits? [snicker] As I remember it, parking over there is a pain in the neck.

Parking a rental car on the street without a permit?

After my second Jersey City car accident within 14 months, my car is in the shop again. So I have a rental car with no parking permit. It's snowing today and there's no street cleaning. Do I still need to worry about getting a ticket or, worse, a boot because I'm exceeding the 2-hour limit for non-permit holders? I'm in Harsimus Cove and parked on a side street.

After all the buzz and looking at their menu, decided to dine there last weekend. We walked in and walked right back out. Another party of 4 did the same while we were deciding where to go instead. This place is LOUD. Dance music is not my idea of a nice dining atmosphere. And they had so many TVs that you could see them from across the street (not exaggerating). In the takout section alone (seperate from the restaurant) there are 5 HUGE TVs! I won't be back.

Re: Gay marriage advocates lobby to override Christie's veto

Yvonne: The last thing I want interfering with my healthcare is religion. Are you familiar with the procedure of symphysiotomy? That's where a laboring mother's pelvis is broken during labor. It was common in Ireland into the 20th century because the Catholic church promoted it. Thousands of women died or were left permanently disabled because the church wanted to make sure these women could continue childbearing. It was not a sound medical procedure. [http://symphysiotomyireland.com/the-story/]. This is just one example why religion should be completely separate from the state. Do what you want to your own body (or in your own marriage) but leave other people out of it.

Is this the former Soviet Union? The first thing they did - remove religion, we are close to that now, only worship not exercise of religion, then they allowed abortion. Because abortion has been around for a long time, the now Russian government, no more Soviet Union, are encouraging people to make babies. They are now raffling off prizes when children are born. It also reminds me of a comment made by the late John Paul 11, he said these beautiful churches in Italy, will one day be Mosques, because the Muslims in Italy are having 7 children while the Italians are having one. Think about it, the people who want to destroy the USA are having seven children while we destroy our own.

Re: mortgage denied
#80

I had a similar experience... tried to refinance my mortgage with Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union in Jersey City. I own a ground level condo of a 4-unit brownstone... very typical of the condos found in DTJC. However, LSFCU denied my refi because the real estate appraiser couldn't find any comparable properties in JC! Amazing. In addition, they put a bunch of lies about the state of my credit on the rejection letter (my credit is flawless) because their policies do not allow them to reject a refinance for only one reason. So, even though there really was only one (very mistaken) reason, they rejected me anyway in violation of their policy. The appraiser later came back with a number but by then my application had expired and I would have had to pay application fees again. And who would want to have a mortgage with this institution?

Sorry to the OP if I hijacked your thread. I just wanted to say that a rejection isn't universal. Banks have different (and sometimes very messed up) policies. I would also warn against mortgaging with a local bank or credit union. They're not subject to the same regulations as big banks, something I learned when I tried to file a complain about their unethical practices. Good luck!

I used to belong to this group when it still performed in Jersey City. Does it even perform in Hudson County anymore? Or does it just rehearse here? From what I can tell it should change its name to Schola Cantorum on Passaic, Essex and Manhattan. Just fair warning to people who might think they are joining a local group. It's not.

ArtProf, clearly you're not a woman. I did find his behavior a bit threatening based on many years of experience. And he did try to touch me. I do feel pity for the man (otherwise I wouldn't have listened as long as I did). But there's a line and he crossed it. That's when warning bells go off.

Yep, that's the guy. He showed me some of his pictures which were quite good and said he was a student of Chagall and Picasso. But what started out as a sort of innocent conversation turned quite graphic with the repeated jerking off gestures and comments about his erection and women. Maybe it's senility. I know some people get quite inappropriate when dementia sets in.

I've taken my shoes to that place on Newark and they did an o.k. job but it is SO dirty and filled with cigarette smoke that I've been looking for a better place. I'm not afraid of a little grit or mom-and-pop idiosyncrasies but I mean that shop is seriously filthy.

Old pervert in Hamilton Park

So last night I was enjoying the fountain in Hamilton Park around dusk as I sometimes do and I had a very uncomfortable encounter with this old guy. He came up to me and, speaking almost no English, tried to communicate something to me with gestures. He kept repeating "woman" and "inspiration" and then making a jerking off motion with his hand. He also described to me how he eats raw garlic and onions for erections. He was sitting there drawing before he approached me and showed me one of his drawings. I think the name signed on it was Helo Majore or something similar. He had s white mustache and was somewhat unkempt. Does anyone know anything about this character? Do I need to avoid the area around the fountain now?

I have to agree. Razza is something very special. Went there over the weekend to celebrate my birthday with some food-forward friends. Everyone raved. The pizza with wild boar sausage was incredible. And we couldn't get enough of the white pizza with fresh Jersey corn and paprika. Beer and cocktail menu is also outstanding. This is my new favorite place.
