Re: should Jersey City create and implement on-street bicycle lanes?

Good luck getting the JCPD to enforce keeping cars out of the bike lane. I rode the bike lane section of Grove St on Saturday and stopped to take this photo:

Resized Image

The police cruiser was just sitting there and not on any obvious business. Worse, there was plenty of room for the car to be parked closer to the curb and out of the bike lane--but the cop didn't seem to care.

Nor did the two other drivers who had their cars double-parked blocking the bike lane between Columbus and Montgomery, making a total of 3 cars in the bike lane on that short stretch of road. And that was for the north side of the street only!

Agreed. Local businesses interested in promoting on JC List would do well to see how Park & Sixth and Grove Street Bicycles do it. Be honest and tell us who you are and we'll (generally) respond honestly and with respect.

Speaking of such honesty, I've been a little turned off from Parkside Bistro ever since they failed to honor a LivingSocial deal under suspicious circumstances. I have gone back since, but the service was uneven enough (10+ minutes to get water, no refills on drinks, menu items not available) to fail to convince me otherwise.

Food there has always been solid though. That jasmine rice is awesome.

SANG HOON PAEK (P & S DENTAL LLC )

162 NEWARK AVE
JERSEY CITY, NJ 07302

My insurance changed last year and I had to find a new dentist. Dr. Paek (he goes by Andrew) was covered by my new plan so I went there for my 6-month checkup. The office is a little older, but all the equipment is modern (3-D X-Rays and such) and the staff was friendly and professional.

If you live downtown, you can't beat the convenience and you can feel secure about their services. I recommend Dr Paek with confidence.

Hey, it only took six posts for an article about a new park to turn into a race discussion. Way to go JCList!

Regarding the actual park, this quote struck me:

Quote:
"One kid told me, 'I don't know what grass is.' It's really sad," said Morris. "It made us better natural athletes, being outside all the time. That makes this special."

What's hilarious is that the beautifully lush lawn at Newport Green is actually artificial turf. Still not a whole lot of natural grass over there. (Insert your own pot-dealer joke here.)

Watched Enterprise fly by from the walkway next to the RR terminal by the NJ 9/11 memorial. Everyone was a little disappointed that it flew over inland instead of over the river, but it was still an awe-inspiring sight.

Funny, because I probably would have had a better view from my rooftop in downtown JC!

There is live video on FOX right now, and the 747 is still taxing on the runway. They also showed the flight path, and it will be heading north up toward the Verrazano first, and then back south to loop past the Statue of Liberty. So I agree, it should probably be going past LSP closer to 10:30.

See you guys there!

In case you don't feel like watching: Not much of JC to see in the 2-minute trailer. A few "stoop" shots of brownstones and lots of interiors at their firehouse apartment. Some quick sets at K9dergarten. And plenty of pics of the Goldman Sachs building used as a phallic backdrop for the interview scenes.

Gentrification? Come on, now.

Would you say the newspapers going out of business are victims of gentrification as well?

It's sad to see a long-time neighborhood establishment have to close up shop, but it's certainly not the fault of "yuppies" or wealthier folks in this case.

High-speed chase and crash at 2nd & Washington
#74

Anybody hear or see this last night? A white guy in his 30's wearing a suit? Sounds like some serious road rage! (Maybe he was pissed about the lack of progress on Washington St.)

from http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-761588:

(Video at above link)

CNN PRODUCER NOTE: sbirje shot this video yesterday evening of a high-speed police chase on the streets of Newport, N.J., ending badly for the fleeing driver. He observed the driver 'speed off in one direction, do a u-turn, then come back down the street and drive into a construction site. ... I walked over to the site and saw the police questioning the guy, he was asking for a cellphone to call his wife, and he seemed sober.' - jmsaba, CNN iReport producer

Jersey City, NJ | Tue Mar 13, 2012 10:07 pm EDT:

A black Mercedes CLK swerved onto Washington Blvd. I was standing right in front of Chilli's when I saw this car do a complete 180 degree spin right in front of me. At first I thought the driver must have lost control. But then when he rashly jerked the car around to get back in the right direction, I realized something was wrong. Speeding off to the next traffic light, he made a U Turn. Expecting him to put on another foolish act, I decided to tape the act on video so that I could turn it over to the police if required. As soon as the signal turned green, he sped off but there was a police car behind him. What the driver did next was bizarre. He ran through the fence of a construction site, all the way through the site and tried to come out the other end through the fence. His car seemed to have got stuck and the air bags deployed when I walked over. The accident resulted in numerous police cars arriving at the scene soon, along with a fire brigade and an ambulance. The driver was a Caucasian male in his early thirties, formally dressed in a grey suite.

Apologies if this has been covered before...

Is there a relatively convenient way to get up onto any sections of the Embankment now as it stands? There were some wonderful photos posted by stc4blues and I'd like to climb up there myself sometime to take a peek.

Hopefully without breaking too many laws (or my neck.)

Agreed. When street sweeping was suspended last winter for all of January and February, there were people who didn't move their car for weeks or even months. Once all the snow was gone and street sweeping started back up, I saw a few neighbors with cars that wouldn't even start after sitting that long.

You can bet without the hassle of moving for the parking rules, more people would keep a car in the street even if they rarely needed it.

Funeral Home at 4th & Jersey becoming apartments

Well, we could all hope for something fun to move into that old funeral home on 4th & Jersey, but it looks like we won't get our wish.

Construction started this morning to convert it into apartments. Apparently there will be ten units in all, including the main building and the garage. Not sure if it will be a condo or rentals.

Correct. The "2 hour" resident parking is only valid 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. There is no enforcement of the non-resident parking on weekends.

Stopped in at Pussy...er, Fussy Friends today. The owner seemed friendly and attentive, and explained that they would be getting more product (and shelves!) in next week.

They stock some decent high-end cat food that I haven't been able to find at this end of town before (Blue Buffalo, BFF) and even offer FREE DELIVERY! Definitely a nice option for apartment-dwellers who don't want to lug a 20-lb bag of cat litter.

My guess would be all the dry leaves in the road built up enough friction to cause smoldering. I've spoken with the street sweeper driver and the JCPA driver in the cart, and they both told me that leaves in the street clog up the sweeper and make it less effective.

Will the city provide free leaf bags so I can sweep the leaves there instead of into the street?

I suppose I am in the minority here, but I think the brick crosswalks actually look pretty good. They do serve as a better visual reminder for drivers that it is a crossing area for pedestrians.

Regarding the deterioration over time, I was disappointed to see one of the new crosswalks already ripped up on Erie St where PSE&G laid the new gas lines (or whatever they were doing.) They patched it up with black asphalt and it looks terrible. Hopefully they will be required to go back and fix it properly when all the work is done.

Another positive vote for Ralph's.

I've ordered tires from TireRack.com and had them shipped to my apartment and then installed at Ralph's (even though they weren't an authorized TireRack installer.)

They did a fine job with the mounting and balancing and work quickly. And they take American Express.
