Woman Robbed at Knifepoint on Mercer St.

Just can't stay away

On my way home I just walked by a woman making a report to police officers after being robbed at knifepoint on Mercer Street just a few doors down from Marco & Pepe at about 6:20PM this evening. The assailant approached her underneath the trees in front of an apartment building just past the restaurant, threatened her with a knife and then took her bag. Fortunately she was not harmed. Sorry for my lack of more detail here but I wanted to give folks a heads up.

I never cease to be amazed at the greed of the landlords in this area. Yes, I am naive: I think it would make sense to lease out space at a reasonable rate for a short time (3 years?) and then, when businesses start flourishing here, the landlord could argue that the spaces are more valuable thereby rationalizing fair rent increases. This would keep the community happy with nice businesses and the landlord happy with cash flow.
I guess these landlords don't mind that their properties (eyesores) sit empty for years until someone with enough cash (and a slush fund to grease the city inspectors' palms) comes along to try their luck in JC.

Guess that's why I'll never be a wealthy landlord.

That said, Good luck Duckys and Dumplings -- welcome to JC!

+1.
Thanks to an unleashed dog, my dog, who has a bad back, ended up needing surgery on his spine to address the injury and then had to endure a long, painful recovery.

My dog was on his leash -- we were approached by an unleashed dog who ran up behind us, startled my dog and, as a result, caused my dog to jump in such a way that completely screwed up his spine.

I am a dog lover but I'm so tired of people who think they can control their dogs when they are off-leash. Keep your dogs on a leash or keep them in a dog run.

Sorry to see this closed, even if it's just for summer vacation! In Europa's absence, get your fix at Sava Polish Diner on Grove right near PostNet...her meatloaf, pierogies, stuffed chicken, and kielbasa are to die for! (Have I mentioned the homemade apple blintzes? OMG.)

JC Parenting has some terrific groups that meet weekly for new moms; they also offer playgroup opportunities for toddlers. I have been part of their program since my daughter was 5 months old and we love it.

Had to replace all of the windows on the south side of our house and got bids from three different window contractors in January. Hansen Brothers did the job in March and we were very very pleased with the price, the product and the installation. There were some custom windows that had to be manufactured and they did an excellent job ensuring a perfect fit. It's a family owned company in North Bergen and they definitely take pride in their work. Phone number is 201.866.4832. I highly recommend them.

Did you try Sava Polish Deli at 346 Grove Street? She has amazing meats (she's very picky with the butcher she sources from); if she doesn't have it I know she would order it for you.
BTW, if you haven't tried her food, I highly recommend that you do. Everytime I serve anything from her restaurant my guests literally eat everything in sight!
I also found out that most Polish dishes are made by either baking or boiling the food, meaning that there's actually less fat than you think in such hearty fare. I definitely get my carb-fix here but she has terrific vegetable dishes too (and desserts that are to die for -- apple blintzes, apple fritters, yum...).

Have recently been trying Sava on Grove Street and I am consistently blown away at how terrific and affordable her food is...pierogies, chicken meatballs, stuffed cabbage, chicken stuffed with spinach, potato pancakes, cheese blintzes, I could go on and on. I recently had a small get together and ordered apple blintzes from Sava to serve as dessert. People went crazy over them and there was not one left at the end of the meal! If you have not tried Sava, I highly recommend it (and it seems a lot of other people on this thread feel the same way). We need to support good restaurants like this one in JC!!!!Quote:

The flavors and tastes of this food are pure pleasure. Amazing. We are lucky to have a place like this in our hood. It's better than any Russian/Polish joint in the East Village, easily. Deeply satisfying, affordable meals served by a true character of a Polish Grandma in an unpretentious, genuine atmosphere. Without question one of the best eateries in Jersey City. This little resto is the real deal.

Lucy Kaplansky is an amazing live performer -- wish I could go and see her tonight but can't find a babysitter :(.
She's also an interesting person -- after some solid success in the music business she left the industry, pursued a doctorate and began a practice in psychology. Guess this is why her music is so insightful (and beautiful).
Highly recommend going to check her out to anyone looking for something to do (and the tix are very affordable).
Ten Year Night is one of her best songs.

+1 Muffintops

After 10 years in Miami Beach I returned to NJ and suffered the major increase in taxes but that's part of the price you pay to live in the wonderful Garden State. I'm no CPA but this is the one HUGE issue that ANYONE who becomes an ex-resident of Florida quickly becomes aware of (I think my dog was even aware of it).
I know LOTS of people try to evade their NJ/NY/wherever taxes after enjoying those FL perks, but that doesn't make it right. Lopez got caught and should be in jail, not trying to have this dismissed by the court. But, as someone wrote earlier, it sounds like her lawyer is just buying time...

muffintops wrote:

Even me, a joe-ette schmoe regular working person who's from Florida (who moved to NJ about 5 years ago) knows that you can't use FL to get out of paying your NJ state income taxes and milk those lovely FL resident perks (there are quite a few). I knew it from day one. She committed tax fraud - why isn't she in prison?

Mr. Vega, the "fact" is that you accepted a bribe while serving as an elected official in Jersey City. Do the right thing (this time) and resign from the City Council.
PS--Please stop listening to whoever is feeding you these ridiculous lines to give to the press; they're making you sound even more pathetic.

I saw a flyer on one of the bulletin boards at an entrance to Van Vorst Park yesterday evening with a photo of a missing dog that sounds like it would fit this description . If I can get over there later (my little one is sleeping now) I will post the owner's contact info here. Or, if you can, send me your neighbor's contact info and if I can get over there tonight I'll call the person who posted the flyer.

I read that the next City Council meeting will be on Sept.9 at 6:00PM and pay to play will definitely be on the agenda.

It will be interesting to see if Vega shows up (since he blew off the last meeting supposedly preparing his defense).

Hopefully other JC residents will attend the meeting since the time is more convenient and we can show Vega and Gaughan (who's been saying that Dwek was trying to entrap people by "testing peoples' greed" -- what an idiot) that the issue is not off our radar and that Vega and Lopez both must go.

PS -- I can't believe that Lopez was the Grand Marshall of last weekend's Puerto Rican Day Parade in JC. She has NO shame but I guess I should not be surprised by anything anymore.

While I am not Steve, I did vote for his re-election. At least there is one voice on the Council that is working for the people of Jersey City, not the HCDO. It's important to keep showing the City Council that residents aren't going to relent until Vega steps down and that the proposed "ethics training" is an insult to the people of Jersey City. Yes, it will be a slow burn for real change to come to this town, but we have to start somewhere, and this is as opportune a time as any.

Agreed that we need to go deeper, but your are right Vega/Lopez is THE starting point for now (until the FBI adds more fuel to the fire, which could be weeks or months away).
A second rally would help reinforce the message to the rest of the Council that, just like them, we're NOT going away. The Council is counting on our apathy or fatigue on this issue -- let's prove them wrong!

The protest seems to have a hand in pushing Corruptarano out in Hoboken. As for Jersey City we do need to go deeper than Vega, he would only be one council member, which is a start.
We also have the Lopez situation which should be some low hanging fruit we can go after too. Naturally there is Healy, we can only hope the FBI comes to get him soon. There would still be 6 Council Members left from Team Healy in which still gives them a majority and deep ties to the machine.
They all have that same exact smug behavior and pretty much laugh at us citizens of Jersey City who want them out. Unfortunately until we can get good people on the council, along with a Mayor that actually cares, we will continue to have the crime situation and people, police officers will continue to get shot.

There are folks out here on the board that think we should not go after Team Healy with pitchforks and torches...Well it looks like it worked in Hoboken.

Let's keep working on pushing them out....We need to keep the pressure on.

Police officers are losing their lives in the fight against crime in our city and Vega was arrested for is taking bribe money for his own benefit. After his smug behavior at the council meeting on Wednesday, we must resolve to get him out!

We as citizens should the work to change the council, see about a recall, or pressure them into resigning too. Then we can break the machine. I agree those from Team Healy left standing could get reelected, or even become Mayor. That's why we could not wait 4 years, we would have to see what we can do now in terms of recalling Team Healy people left standing.
We still need to wait to see how this all turns out with the FBI and the ongoing investigations.

we have a responsability here to remind the electorate all across the city that he has been elected by the very active support of several individuals who are implicated in a major scandal. and even if none of these guys goes to the slammer, we cannot simply let this scandal disappear into the fog of memory.

there is a political machine in jersey city and hudson county. healy owns it. even if he is gone - resigned, in jail or in retirement - he is still the owner of the machine, and nothing will happen politically in the city without his knowledge, permission and patronage.

it is like killing weed. we can neutralize healy, but the body and his time will survive. and given their pure strength, they may be able to reelect some people who clearly are implicated in this scandal without being charged.

After all without that 3 million dollars which we now know had illegal contributions in their campaign war chest of money in which helped all of Team Healy get elected they might not have won their council seat. Those council races were close, some went to run-offs. That money helped put them over the top.

Even though Team Healy has not pushed for Vega's resignation, none of then seem Pro-Vega, or even make mention any longer of the Great Mayor Healy as Brennan would go lengths to say at the council meetings.

They all seemed very uncomfortable yesterday and not fit to run our city.

Mayor Healy, Mariano Vega and the members of the Healy Team have broken the trust of the residents of Jersey City.
