It's really a shame about Teddy these days. When i first moved here he was in pretty good health. Last time I saw him he looked to be in really bad shape/strung out. Hope he gets some help.
He's a career criminal who no doubt has repeatedly tried to make you one of his victims. He defrauds commuters out of money claiming it goes to a homeless shelter and spends it on drugs for himself. He is preying on the citizens of Jersey City. What "help" should we get him? Maybe some coaching on how to make his scam more convincing?

Look it up Wibbit - crime went down nationally and if you look at NYC as a whole and not just the disneyfied midtown/times square area, the story wasn't unusual relative to the rest of the nation.

Crime is down in downtown JC far more than it is down nationally.

And criminals were being told specifically not commit crimes downtown.

There's a message. "Young man, I don't want you breaking into cars on this side of the turnpike, or selling crack more than 1 block from the projects".

WRONG! I assume your friend is probably stoned/drunk so doesn't want to talk to police, but HAVE HIM VISIT IN PERSON TOMORROW to fill out a report. It DOES make a difference because it will be reflected in the crime stats. If a person is out there with a gun, IT MUST BE REPORTED. A report has to be filed with the police, and don't let the police try to talk your friend out of filing a report.

If the police don't want to file a report, you're going to encounter quite a severe reaction if you insist. If you walk into a police station and they don't want to file a report, just say thanks and walk away.

Since the only effect of reporting the crime will be the reflection in the stats, you have to decide whether risking a beating or a arrest for of obstruction of justice is worth it.

I could see some people wanting to make a point or wanting to get this practice to stop. But I doubt most people here care enough about Jersey city to risk their lives to improve it.

As far as I'm concerned, I shouldn't care more about a place than the people in charge do.

Are you having trouble getting clean needles otherwise?

I hope you know that a big part of the danger of a used needle is the fact that the needle becomes dulled quickly, and that you tend to make a nasty tear rather than a clean hole. So even if you found someone to share needles with whom you were also comfortable sharing diseases, (or you felt that you found a bleach-rinsing technique that was adequate) it would still not be a good idea due to the dulling of the needle.

525 is a scary building. I'm glad I don't work there anymore. The elevators randomly give you a couple feet of freefall, or open up a couple feet misaligned from the floor. The fire alarms go off every time there's a 2 second power outage (More frequent 2-second power outages than the rest of the neighborhood, too). The building has actual fires regularly as well, so ignoring the fire alarms isn't a good idea.

When there's a fire alarm, or even real fire, their priority seems to be not to force the trading companies to evacuate, not safety. For example, once there was a fire on the floor 5 flights below me, and we were told to evacuate -to- that floor (it was our "re-entry floor")! The evacuation plans involve going to a lower floor, but they allowed that floor to be the ones with a fire! It wouldn't have even been possible to evacuate to our "re-entry floor" if not for the the door held open by people fleeing the actual scene of the fire.

Only twice have I heard of a person being stuck in the elevator for multiple hours (only once did they have to pee in the elevator). Personally I've never been trapped longer than 5 minutes in that building's elevators.

The combination of false fire alarms, real fires, and elevators that can't be trusted at the best of times, will get you some exercise.

On the high floors, the building creaks loudly on a windy day. I'm sure that's part of the design of some buildings. "It's just the wind" doesn't take the fear out of it anymore after seeing a huge window start to crack within feet of your desk after 8 hours of loud creaking.

OK, now I want to know how long the tapes are kept for, whether a person can request access to the tapes or that the police review them at a given time, and where these cameras are.

This is not the first crime at this intersection, and it's the first I've heard of video. It isn't unusual in Jersey City to be told "sorry, we don't have the tape from that camera". (It seems to me that every time a criminal escapes because a tape was "lost", someone should get in -some- kind of trouble for that).

I wonder if private citizens could fund the installation of high-quality cameras in trouble spots, and make the data public so that anyone could use it as evidence when a crime occurs.

It certainly had potential, which was ruined by dog piss infused dirt. But I don't see what this expensive and long renovation project will do about that.

Surprisingly, it's still legal for a dog to piss on the dirt in this crowded city. It's still legal for a dog to defecate on the dirt and for only the majority of it to be picked up.

Any laws restricting dogs to certain areas of the park are not going to be enforced. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves about Jersey City. The lawn will still be disgusting to lay on, and the sidewalks that you have to walk across to get there will still be disgusting.

This city is too crowded to allow human or dog waste in the streets and parks. Cutting down trees and planting flowers will not solve this. Perhaps closing the park for a summer will force the dog-owners to move elsewhere, but I'm not optimistic.

This is all very confusing to me...

Are people trying to donate their computers to some organization that could use an old computer? If so, how are these organizations funding the need for someone to repair or maintain them? Are they properly considering whether it makes economic sense to use computers old enough that someone was willing to throw them away?

And what is this about *paying* someone to take old computers? I could understand paying a charity to offset the TCO, I suppose..

If you think you might start crying when haggling over the price of something, go to a business where you don't have to haggle.

Did you read the original post? The car was bought, the deal was sealed. The dealer reneged on the sale because they (so they say) had the car up for sale on ebay at the same time they were trying selling it off the lot. They probably got a better price on ebay (maybe) so they screwed the walk-in buyer. They suck. They are used car dealers therefore they suck.

If the deal was sealed, the poster has the superior position and should not have felt like crying. They should have easily been able to get the agreed-upon deal or a better one, using the threat of the consequences of breaking a signed contract as leverage.

Everything sounds to me like the deal was in the final stages, but not sealed.

Re: ANTS!

Never actually had an ant problem here, but my anti-ant paranoia habits from more tropical environments might be why.

Ants are going to send scouts out and there's nothing you can do to stop this. They leave a scent trail to find their way back. If they find something good, they follow that scent trail and leave a different scent to tell the other ants something good lies that way.

Seal up all your food perfectly. Double-bag everything. Triple-bag sugar. Always, all year long. If something spills in the pantry, clean it completely. But it should be impossible for a spill like that if you're double-bagging everything. (An unsealed bag doesn't count at all).

Don't leave dirty dishes out overnight. Mop the kitchen floor regularly, even when it seems clean. (a drop of something sweet that dries is delicious to an ant)

Get a garbage can that closes (the foot pedal to open type). Take the garbage out before going to bed or leaving for work.

You want the scouts to find nothing.

Spray huge amounts (and varied kinds) of poison around the perimeter of the residence. Extra around their points of ingress. This will discourage the scouts, but it won't ever fully stop them. Re-poison regularly.

How bad is your Comcast Internet?
#77
Home away from home
Home away from home

How bad is your Comcast Internet lately? I've been an unhappy customer of them for years now (ever since the switchover from @home), but the service has rarely been worse than in the past several months.

I'm averaging about 15% packet loss over the past few months (based on collecting 1-second ping data against a reliable server). It's not correlated to a particular time of day (e.g. it's not better in the middle of the night when everyone's sleeping). Latency is always good. The cable modem reports a good SNR. The most irritating part is that the packet loss usually comes as a solid multiple-second interruption, e.g. 3 minutes of reliability and 30 seconds of no traffic being passed.

I suppose the cable modem could be going bad, but of the 5 or so cable modems I've had fail over the years, none went bad in this way. And I need some reason to suspect this before making it worth dealing with Comcast's support and the day or two of work I'll have to miss. Especially since Comcast rarely has people who can even understand the problem (though in my experience about 20% of the techs they send out have a personal interest in networking that gives them enough of a beginning to understand an intermittent Internet connection when it is shown to them).

I've found other people in downtown JC who complain about Comcast's cable modem reliability. But unfortunately, they're all people who are so non-technical they can't even describe the manner in which they believe it to be unreliable, let alone take measurements to understand it.

It's a shame there is no viable choice for reliable and fast Internet access in downtown JC, when Newport is one of the best-connected neighborhoods I've seen anywhere in the US.

Is he allowed to choose any sort of community service? Certainly bringing a court case against the government body subjecting him to slavery would be a community service.

I see how some could argue that forcing students to do "community service" is a good thing, and I can also see how some could argue that the 13th amendment to the US constitution was not legally ratified. But if indeed it was legally ratified, I don't see any way to argue that forced "community service" is different from "involuntary servitude".

90% of those massage girls probably were hookers when they were decent looking. Be realistic.

As far as the Israeli skin care stuff, they used to have two very hot girls approaching men. I suspect they had much too low of a success rate because most of us just focused on the girl and not the product. A sales job that involves approaching many potential customers with a ridiculous product is a common Mossad training exercise.

I've stopped giving even the smallest of courtesy to the harassment. I have to walk by it at least twice every day - although many days, I alter my route to avoid them.

I've never been in any other mall where people harass you on the street trying to sell you things. It's not as bad as the children on Erie street begging for money, nor as bad as the teenagers near the back mall entrance trying to intimidate people into buying overpriced candy. But it's bad enough to make life materially less pleasant.

I'm getting really tired of having to gauge my path through Jersey City based on whether I will be harassed by bums, road rage psychos, sales people at kiosks.

I really can't see any reason for a person to oppose gay marriage unless they feel they need the government to keep them straight.

For me it's a hugely important civil rights issue for everyone, as it goes to the government's ability to regulate people's private life. Government staying out of marriage is relevant to divorce, miscegnation, polygamy, fornication, and the infinite list of arbitrary restrictions that the government could (and does) place on people's private lives.

I'm worried that a political climate that allows people to go out of its way to ban gay marriage could ban -anything-. I consider gay marriage votes a barometer of whether people believe that the government should be micromanaging people's lives.

To be forced to cross multiple dangerous roads is bad enough.

Anyone who votes after work will be voting in darkness. The crack dealers are out in full force by then. There are gun battles in broad daylight over there.

This is an obviously deliberate attempt to scare people away from voting. Anyone who has been over by Holland Gardens knows how dangerous it is. Anyone who reads the news knows how dangerous it is.

Anyone who has tried to cross those roads on foot knows how dangerous that is.

Where is the public outcry? All I've seen are some posts on a message board.

Re: incident at Dunkin Donuts

I've never seen a place where poeple treat each other worse than Jersey City. This thread summarizes it perfectly.

It's one thing to be unaware that there are drug addicts begging for money on the streets of every major city in the US. It's another to think that these beggars are indeed looking for food. People reading this are rightly shocked and concerned for the OP's safety. She in fact sounds so naive that she is in a disproportionte amount of danger.

People innocently tried to help, and were attacked in response, by someone who is so innocent as to think that beggars are likely to be begging because they are hungry! Jersey City turns people mean fast.

I'm not opposing giving money to people for drugs, nor for trying for the one in a hundred chance that they're actually hungry. But you have to know what you're doing, and the risks that you are taking.

My opinion is that if you understand what is going on, you are safer interacting with these shady characters than you are ignoring them. They usually hang around your neighborhood all day. It's good to have friendly people in the neighborhood. The people begging for drug money are not usually a significant threat. You have to have had a life experience that gives you some ability to judge this.

But if someone is from a place so safe and harmless that they don't realize that people begging for money almost always want drugs, what should you advise them? That's a completely different worldview that comes from a place that many of us probably can't understand. I have seen towns, even in the US, where no one locks their doors - even car doors when parking overnight. Does this kind of post merit a warning that opening your wallet, handing a beggar $5 out of a wallet full of cash, and then leading them to your habitually unlocked house or car, is a bad idea?

People would be willing to help if the OP had been willing to engage in an honest conversation, admitting she's from Finland or Wyoming and never seen someone begging for money. Perhaps this conversation would lead us to understand what the difference is between her life experience and ours. Obviously it's something significant. But how is anyone to know what advice to give, when someone is coming from a completely different set of experiences and does not even hint at what they are?

And let's face it. Thinking that someone begging for money is a direct result of the economy or poverty, or feeling guilty for being "middle class", is extremely naive. I'm not especially willing to help this particular person, because our help is clearly not appreciated. But in the general case, it would be interesting to learn what has led someone to grow up thinking this way, and what kind of places are so cozy that you could come out with that attitude.

This 250GB/month limit is pretty shocking. I can't believe we have no other choice of ISP.

What really gets me is that Newport is one of the most well-connected neighborhoods in the US. You could get a 1Gb link to the internet for $1k/month 5 years ago. And yet we are so close and have virtually no options. I see Verizon running fiber for FIOS, but yet they still say the end of 2009 - which probably means mid-2011.

I love Comcast's deceptiveness in calling a movie 2GB.

Before they announced the cap, I did something that would have violated the limit. I backed up every digital picture in my collection over the internet. Since I'm the photographer, I own the copyright. So there goes the argument that you need to violate someone's copyright to exceed 250GB/month. There also goes the argument that you need to do something unreasonable to exceed 250GB/month. That was 250GB in less than a day.

We're back at the level of internet service that we had in 1997. Other countries have been improving their infrastructure since then. We're down to under one Mb/s.

It's a start and we need more of this. If you aren't doing anything wrong and your car is up to snuff than you have nothing to worry about.

I worry about the US constitution being ignored.

I worry about a pattern of the police ignoring illegal and dangerous behavior, and it being balanced by a system of stopping every legitimate driver who drives by a random spot.

If you are doing something wrong and know it, you would have seen the checkpoint and made the U-turn.

And when dealing with the JCPD, "if you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about", is untrue for its own special reasons.

I worry about police who refuse to take reports or come to the scene of a crime, but go out of their way to manufacture trivial crimes towards the end of the month.

I can't believe with all the blatant disregard for traffic safety in Jersey City, their solution when they actually put some effort into enforcement is to ignore the law and harass every driver on the street.
