Re: New York Water Taxi to Raise Rates One-way Trip From Exchange Place Will Cost $9 Instead of $6

NY Waterways - Liberty Harbor / Marin Blvd here I come!

Still $4.75 one way and takes me to Wall St.

The Water Taxi was a good service, but at those prices I'm looking at $4000 a year.
I'd rather spend the money on my kids music classes and miss my walk past the coffee shop in Paulus Hook.

Re: JERSEY CITY 911 OPERATORS AND COPS BLAMED IN $200M LAWSUIT

My understanding is that it is illegal to call 911 and make a false report to an emergency or give a false address to an emergency.

Once the police arrived to the wrong address, they should called the 911 operator and requested that they track / trace the source of the complaint via the telephone.

By doing that, they could have spoken to the initial 911 caller for more information or charged them for making a false alarm call to 911.

Police must have a policy dealing with 'crank' calls to 911, this way if it was a mistake by the caller, a trace can be made to take the appropriate action - either calling them back or going to the point of origin. (address of the caller)

This is BASIC policing procedures, especially if the 2 officers just went back to 'general patrolling' and not to another emergency.

Maybe we should expand the role of the Transit Police to include policing and roadworthy checks on these buses and the taxis.

Some of these taxis look as if they are ready for the junk yard.

Could I assume that these drivers are required to be checked by Police for any criminal offences prior to transporting the public around?
I don't like the idea that some previously convicted sex offender could be driving women around!

Egyptian times / Roman times all had taxes. Initially some form of taxes were collected (not necessarily in the form of currency but grains and fish as an example) to provide protection from the ruling parties against invaders, so it goes back along time.

As they say you can't avoid death and taxes!

I guess we need to have an investigative look at the financial report / budgets of New Jersey and Jersey City. This would include contracts that have been allocated and their cost effectiveness. (Paying money to a poor service provider is simply flushing money down the toilet - who does the 'checks and balances'?)

Does anyone do an audit on States and Cities?

What I am noticing is that Jersey City especially, has a goverance and accountability style that was seen in the 60's.
If cityhall had the 'right' policies and procedures in place for all its actions (employment, works etc etc) it would then by default be transparent. It would seem that cityhall is as muddy as the Hudson.

In relation to crime, we need to spend BIG in the areas of education, sporting groups, religious groups, supporting families and similar youth organizations that can give OUR kids some direction.
Not everyone can go to University, so government should help support and introduce trade schools for the vulnerable low income youth.
Just imagine how many youths might want to learn how to be a gardener, landscaper, bricklayer, carpenter, plumber or electrician if it was cheap to learn - it will NOT get all the youth off the streets, but it would get some and once they start working it will be tax dollars returning (must be cheaper then some kid in prison for years)

There must be a lot of Cities in the U.S that are doing the 'right thing' for their communities - send a delegation to find out how it 'ticks' and clone it here.

And finally: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD CITY, JUST BAD MANAGEMENT / LEADERSHIP.

It appears the greed for power is more important then the need to lead could sum up JC/NJ politics.

If there is a student out there doing criminology or similar, all they would need to do is hook up a few of the responses here and you would have an ok essay for school.

Even the 'hard-line' approach could be added in, to give it an objective view point.

super-furry is right, just a log on is required and password system for staff. Then supervisors can check individual staff.

If the site isn't work related, then a verbal warning, followed by a written then termination.

Very simple process of installing a user name and password.
Maybe the JClist administrator can pay them a visit to show them this format!

All I'd include is a compulsory password change every 3 months since there are more then 1 user per computer.

Its amazing how the rest of the corporate world have these systems checks and balances, yet JC is behind on this.

It used to be that local government would lead the way on corporate governance and staff accountability but not here.

JC really is 'ass backwards'

I have no problem with strict or zero tolerance legislation and enforcement relating to the illegal drug culture but where will these people go, with more then likely no skills or education - should we ship them back to Europe, Asia, the America's or Africa?

One would think that a prison is an ideal location for drug users to be cured of their addiction - a controlled environment where drugs SHOULDN'T make there way in.

As part of any rehabilitation or sentence inmates should be educated there with a trade, schooling or simply put to work but it appears instead, they are exposed to other forms of crime within that system with fellow inmates.

Crime and punishment will never be an 'easy fix' but throwing a criminal mind on the street will cause GREAT problems for the community. 2 words come to mine resentment and payback - with higher rent payments for their families will mean more crime.

Unfortunately our tax paying money has to go towards paying for the 'ill's' of our society - don't worry I don't like it neither but it is a necessary 'pain in the butt'.

Once again a few paragraphs can never answer a complex question.

Throwing people out from public housing doesn't address the problem - it will just create new ones. (spare me a bench at Hamilton or VVPark for an example of many)

I can't believe that JC lawmakers are that dumb, its such a 'knee jerk' political reaction.

Yes, the Police force is a reflection of the community it serves.

That being the case, the crime rate and the management of law and order is at an acceptable level in Jersey City!

I on the other hand, believe the lower the socioeconomic demographics of a community, the higher the academic requirements are needed from management to make change.
Management then have the ability to instruct and direct frontline officers to effect that change.

Just watched the swearing in of Chief Comey by the Mayor on T.V. (must of been a repeat)

Wow, these 2 guys really are 'blue collar' public speakers and come across as having a management style that is also very 'blue collar'.

After listening to him and then looking at some of the District Commanders resumes, (posted on other subject titles) there would be a few Commanders upset with his appointment.

Our Commander for this area has the right academic credentials to understand that there is a cause and effect to crime, not merely a case of enforcing the crime by just making arrests but also addressing its true cause to prevent an on going cycle.

Comey comes across as a reactive crime fighter not a proactive one.

I hope my assessment of the Chief is incorrect and that he has a network of 'thinkers' around him, but this did not come across on what I saw on T.V.

He comes across as a guy who enjoys a good meal and a few beers!

Maybe someone should start a genealogy of middle management and higher of staff members at Cityhall and include management in the Police, emergency service departments, city service providers and contractors to see how much it is a family and friends network.

I guess cityhall might like to consider themselves as a family friendly work place - so long as its our family not yours!

There must be someone out there who loves a good witch hunt.

"I don't see it as a conflict. I probably have better knowledge of these issues than the other council people because of my job," Spinello said.

If that isn't a conflict right there, then what is?

It is because you are directly involved, that you should sustain from voting on this issue.
Because of Spinellos position / capacity in this area, he should only advise the board / council on the situation like an expert witness might, but he shouldn't vote on the verdict or outcome.

Spinello must understand, you can't be a prosecutor or council for a defendant and also sit on the jury.

Do we know the type of door this is and the locks used? (does it have a distinctive look / design or door handle type)

If so, check your doors and locks - if they are similar, make some changes or take some precautions.

If the 'thugs' have half a brain, they will be targeting doors and locks that are similar for their ease of forced access.

Maybe the Hamiliton park renovation group / committee should use the same principals as most Police departments. NO NAME, NO GENUINE CONTACT DETAILS, NO COMPLAINT.
Voicing one's opinion on JClist is one thing, but doesn't 'hold water' considering an alias is being used, especially when groups have conducted surveys and reports in a public and personal way.

If I was at City Hall, I too would be sitting on my hands and doing nothing. It seems that residents argue about every small detail then getting united and making a FINAL presentation to council, then a united push to make it happen.
Some people need to be told to shut-up if they were not present when the initial and detailed survey and report was made - otherwise this project will never see the light of day.
We don't live in a perfect world and no-one is perfect, but if this project is the 'best fit' for the majority of park uses then move forward.

I would love to see a shade structure over the play equipment but then again I can put a hat and sun-screen on my child.

What about if all those who felt they have not been part of the process go to this next meeting and help out where you can. Those who have been part of the process, greet them with a genuine warm welcome.

After the meeting go to a central 'watering hole', have a beer or wine or juice, kiss and make up and focus on the park instead of each other.

Once this park is renovated, get every religious order from priest, rabbi, voodoo witch doctor, police and fire chief, mayor and any other heads of state to bless it for good luck for those that use it.
