Re: Fulop to solicit proposals from for-profit companies to replace FOL in running the Loew’s theater

The City wants to turn the Loew's into a premiere entertainment center. That will require professional management. I understand this is bittersweet to those who have worked to preserve the theater in the past and who wanted to continue to direct its future, but the Mayor's obligation is to the city as a whole.

Businesses with long-term service arrangements should not be allowed to advertise rates based on short-term discounts that expire. If they want to offer introductory discounts to get people to try their services--fine. Just quote the real price first.

Who regulates ISPs/Cable TV?

Does the city have ANY authority over these "service" providers. This kind of fraud should result in prison time.

I'm looking at my current service at Verizon FIOS's website. FIOS is offering me an "upgrade" which they promote as follows:

"Total 1st Mo. Price $5.00 a month more"

Elsewhere on the page is a box, easily missed, that says "1 Included Discounts!" under which in finer print it says "Monthly Price includes $10.00 in discounts." OK sounds good. BUT there is a circle with a plus sign, again easily missed.

Clicking on this tiny circled plus sign reveals "$10 FiOS Quantum Credit for 1 Month"

In other words, the upgrade price is only $5 a month for 1 month, after which it is $15 a month-- 200% more.

How can they get away with this?

The people serving on the Board are doing so as unpaid volunteers in addition to their other work and family obligations. Any step to make their service more efficient will encourage more people to be willing to serve.

Let's face it-- the more time someone wants to speak at a public meeting the less likely it is that they have anything constructive to say. Important, constructive comments can be scheduled in advance. It is mainly people who view these meetings as ego-boasting free entertainment who will not have the discipline to plan ahead.

Re: Hoboken mayor claims Christie administration held city's Sandy recovery funds 'hostage' to help deve

Reminder about an event in April:

Quote:
Gov. Chris Christie today vetoed a bill requiring oversight of billions of dollars in federal aid for Hurricane Sandy, despite Democratic objections, calling the measure redundant and wasteful.

?While I thank the sponsors for their efforts, and for sharing in my commitment to the transparent and efficient administration of Sandy recovery funding, this bill would produce unnecessary redundancies and waste government resources,? Christie said in the two-page veto message.

The bill (A61) would have required the treasurer to set up a website to track contracts by county and municipality, issue quarterly reports on recovery dollars and put out ?expedited priority reports? explaining any problems the administration encounters.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) said the bill would have written oversight into state law, rather than taking the Republican governor?s word for it.

But another thing I want to point out about this who debacle supposedly set up to make the Fort Lee mayor look bad, it just doesn't make any sense to me and whoever thought they were going to make the mayor look bad is about as idiotic as they come, because:

1. Hundreds of thousands of cars go over the GW Bridge every day - only a fraction of those people live in Fort Lee and could vote for the mayor.

They took away 2 of the 3 lanes reserved for local Ft. Lee traffic. (This actually made it easier for all other traffic.) Think of the right-most lane of the Holland Tunnel tollbooth which is reserved for traffic turning right off of Marin. Those local access lanes were used by people outside of Ft. Lee just as not everyone using the Marin lane is from Jersey City. However, the resulting traffic crippled Ft. Lee alone.

Quote:
2. Even the small fraction of people from Fort Lee who might have been inconvenienced by the traffic jam who bother to vote would be angry at the Port Authority, not the mayor - he has no control over the bridge.

Whoever decided to to create this traffic jam should take new lessons on making politicians look bad, because they obviously didn't learn anything the last time. It all makes no sense.

I don't think they were seeking to make Ft. Lee voters angry at their mayor. I don't think there was any rational purpose to the stunt. Bullies don't need reasons. They just wanted to lash out.

There is another theory out there: The local access lanes run through an area of vacant land that Ft. Lee is developing with two massive ($1 billion) projects. It is Sokolich's core accomplishment. The value of the land is dependent on it's easy access to the bridge. The closures might have been an implicit threat that the lanes could be closed permanently, turning the advantage of easy access to the bridge into the detriment of constant angry traffic running right through the site.

I've read both NY Times and CNN accounts, and I don't see this. CNN says another aide was forwarded an email from the Port Authority's Executive Director discussing the problems the lane closures were causing, but not that she knew about why the lanes were closed.

My favorite so far. Times description of "study" hastily prepared after the fact

Quote:
The study was emailed among officials at the authority on Sept. 12.

It was four pages long and found that, in essence, closing toll lanes creates traffic backups.

?By eliminating two of the toll lanes? dedicated to local traffic, ?this traffic was forced to queue on local streets.?

I think Rachel Maddow's analysis makes a lot of sense, especially given the timing and the Ft. Lee Mayor's saying he was never asked for his endorsement.

But of course, as Monroe points out, the real issue is MSNBC's ratings. They are lower than Fox News's, so we can dismiss Maddow's thoughts without even reading them.

First, the issue is that Justice and the Obama administration is following up the IRS abuses with an investigation. How could they not, especially after they've apologized for the abuses?

Second, choosing a Democrat and Obama contributor is a bit, well, transparent. So would it be OK if Christie gave a Republican and Christie donor a lead role in a conegate investigation? That would be hunky dory, right?

It is contrary to department policy and a prohibited personnel practice under federal law to consider the political affiliation of career employees or other non-merit factors in making personnel decisions,? said Justice spokeswoman Dena Iverson. ?Removing a career employee from an investigation or case due to political affiliation, as chairmen Issa and Jordan have requested, could also violate the equal opportunity policy and the law.?

We're talking about an alleged abuse of political power to damage an opponent. Bringing up Obama's IRS targeting conservative groups prior to an election is certainly a much bigger issue than Christie's staff targeting a mayor who wasn't even asked for an endorsement. Especially given that Christie was going to win in a landslide anyway, but Obama's election was somewhat marginal.

It turned out that the IRS examined both liberal and conservative groups, as they should have. No one was "targeted." That's why the "scandal" went away.

That was a remark President Obama made to Eric Cantor in 2009 about a policy dispute. It has nothing to do with petty retribution. Besides, the behavior at hand happened BEFORE the election.

It was used over and over by the looney left, trying to give Obama carte blanche on any policy he wanted to implement during his second term-ignoring, of course, that his margin of victory was less than in 08, and that voter turnout for his second election was lower as well.

Of course, even though it was a stretch, the botched roll out of the flawed 'signature' Obamacare put paid any idea of the election having consequences.

You know, the 650 million dollar failure which Obama hasn't fired a single person over, since we're talking about accountability in this thread.

It has nothing to do with what we are talking about.

I've noticed this behavior before. Right wing people like to argue a point by changing the subject to some alleged hypocrisy by the left which, invariably is not real.

It's true that there is nothing (yet) to prove that Christie knew about this. However, common sense tell us that his aides and political advisors would not be acting so recklessly without his approval or a strong basis to believe he approved based on prior behavior.

Also, his aides were delighted by their little plot. If you had done something you thought was a clever bit of political revenge on your boss's behalf--wouldn't you want your boss to know about it?

My impression was this was a Nixonian performance. Full of lies and betrayal of loyal aides.

There is also the question of the many redactions on the e-mails released. There has been no explanation for them and it is hard to think of any legitimate reason for them. In some cases, the identity of the person sending the e-mail was redacted.

Christie had every reason to believe that the new Speaker would not authorize a continuation of the Assembly's investigation and that the matter would quietly die. Now the investigation can't be squashed and federal prosecutors are involved. The redacted information will be revealed. Can't wait to see what they tried to hide.
