Re: Signatures needed for Ron Paul

Just can't stay away

Only signatures of registered Republicans count.
A signature from a non-affiliated voter is invalid.

However, unaffiliated voters are allowed to vote in the upcoming Republican Primary, but if you do vote, your affiliation gets changed to Republican.

A registered Democrat who wants to change to Republican in order to vote for Ron Paul in NJ, must apply to switch AT LEAST 55 DAYS BEFORE the primary. The Primary is June 5th. So to be safe you need to apply before April 9th.

A registered voter currently not affiliated with a political party may declare their party affiliation up to and including Primary Election day.

More info:
http://www.state.nj.us/state/elections/parties_doe.html

T-Bird: It takes 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot. I'm not sure how far along we are yet. The deadline for sigs is April 2nd.
The organizers are trying for 2,000 signatures to be safe.

HobbiesOdd: You would have to change your affiliation to Republican before signing, but you can vote in the Republican Primary.

stc4blues: I will check out your site more when I can. But I really like how OWS has ignited the public discourse about our increasingly Dickensian society. When I talk about how I think sociopathic greed is destroying this country's formally successful hybrid of capitalism/socialism, I always mention how Ben&Jerry's originally had a corporate rule that the lowest paid worker in the corporation could not make less than 1/10th of the highest paid worker. When you think about it, is this such a bad rule for a corporate entity? With this rule, the CEO can pay himself as much as he wants, but he also has to raise the other salaries accordingly. Simple. But of course, they had to remove the rule eventually. Currently CEOs make greater than 300 TIMES more than the avg. worker.

stillinjc, you don't have to be so jaded about everything.
This guy made an honest, informative documentary about people dealing with life shattering problems after allowing fracking on their property.

Now he was just collecting footage for a possible future follow-up documentary. Thats what it says in the article if you read it.

The law allows filming in trials/hearings that are open to the public. His forceful removal was a transgression of not only his rights but all of our rights, since now we will never have a chance to see any footage of what transpired in that room.

Doesn't that scare you just a little bit?

While I am not exited about Richardson and Lavarro winning, I am glad that Ahmad and Velazquez are off the council. More so Ahmad. I'm guessing Richardson has made the final push away from team Healy. She's not the worst, but she's still a fool. Really disappointed about Levin not winning.

Ahmad may get appointed to fill Viola's Ward F seat . . .

One interesting result of yesterdays election was that the two winners are both from the Bergen/Lafayette area. And since Viola is now vacating her Ward F seat, another resident of Bergen/Lafayette will need to be appointed to that seat. This means that the Council will now have three reps from Bergen/Lafayette.
It will be interesting to see if this raises the status of B/L among JC neighborhoods and among Council members.

Door to Door with Dan Levin

Last night I went door to door campaigning for Dan Levin. I haven't gone door to door for anything since I was in my early twenties and was helping out Earth Island Institute. But there I was, about to turn 46 this month, married with three kids, knocking on a door of a complete stranger. I did know a few things about them since their name was on this list on my clipboard. I knew they had recently voted, I knew their name, and I knew I had to find some way to get them to vote Tuesday.

I went out there because I was tired of being sick of it all. Maybe OWS inspired me. Maybe the Tea Party inspired me. But I think Dan, who was walking with me ringing doorbells and knocking on doors himself, inspired me more than anything else

"Hello, my name is Dan Levin and I'm one of 17 candidates running for two At-Large Council seats in the special election this Tuesday." Dan begins his introduction to the newest person we have roused from their Sunday night routine with a buzz of their doorbell. "But I'm probably the only candidate who is not a former or current public employee." The first time I heard his soft-spoken speech I started to panic. "Will this person get bored and slam the door on us?" I thought to myself. "We're interrupting the Giants game after all. Why doesn't Dan just cut to the chase!" But Dan is describing the resignation of Vega and his corruption conviction in calm, matter-of-fact tones, without any vitriol, and minus the dramatic gestures and bombastic speech I usually associate with "campaigning". I look at the resident standing in his doorway. Does he care about any of this? I haven't heard one sound-bite yet from Dan, and yet he seems to have held the interest of this person. I look back at Dan, who is talking about his background. "My background is in business, not politics. I have a small framing business in Hoboken, and before that I was a manager at a Credit Union . . ." In another minute, I realize that the guy in the doorway is not only keenly interested in Dan's message, but he is asking questions.

I saw this time and again as we walked block after block last night. Campaigning is a slow, long process - connecting with voters one by one. There is no quick way to describe how to improve the Council and the City. There is no sound-bite to summarize the years of civic activism Dan has spearheaded and nurtured. How does one describe all the years of work that went into the Fulop-championed pay-to-play reform bills that CivicJC wrote? How can one succinctly document the tangled hairball of curruption that is our current City Council?

But this time it seems, the voters are willing to engage in thoughtful, honest discussion about JC's problems and the complexities of the remedies. Many of them are tuning out the tired, rehashed half-truths and slogans shouted from megaphones atop billboarded vans, and splattered on 4-color glossy mailers paid for by money printed by the political machinery.

And the reason I feel that people are so engaged in this council election is because for the first time ever, their vote really, truly counts. This is the greatest chance ever to get another reformer on the council to join Steve Fulop. With so many candidates for only two seats, the winner may be decided by one vote. It could happen. And that vote may be yours or mine or your friend's that you drag out to the voting booth tomorrow night.

I'm glad I put aside everything on my TODO list last night and went out there to help energize a few voters. But it was only a drop in the bucket, so I'll try to go out tonight too, and tomorrow night, until the last voting booth closes at 8pm.

signed, a (somewhat less) jaded-JC'er.

some interesting points denibleu.

But if "Levin and Lavarro find themselves on the same side of many issues" as you say, then why didn't Lovarro team up with Levin? Can you answer that? Because I would honestly like to know. If the only reason he didn't team up with the only other reformer running is because Levin doesn't have enough votes as you suggested, then I think the name of this discussion topic is RIGHT ON TARGET.

The fact of the matter is, that no one is really disappointed that Lavarro didn't team up with Levin, that would have been no big deal. The disappointing thing is that he DID team up with Richardson.

If Lavarro thinks that he will automatically get the votes of all Filipinos just because he is Filipino, he may be in for a surprise.

Glad to see I was not the only one who thought the face brick inlays at the intersections were a bad use of taxpayer funds. None of us (taxpayers) asked for this, right? So where did the idea come from? Who is making lots of money now installing them?

I think they look bad, and fake, and cheap now, but imagine after a year or two how bogus they will look as the stuff starts disintegrating.

Bike route signs were a similar waste of funds. We need budget hawks elected to the Council for this coming election. I suspect projects like these are just hand-outs for the well-connected.

Does it really matter that Dan and Steve may not be best of buddies? Isn't the "buddy network" an example of what we DON'T need in the council right now?
I don't think Steve should endorse Dan because they're buddies, or because Dan will be a good "yes-man" for Steve, I think he should endorse him because he was a major force behind passing the pay-to-play reform. Dan is a proven reform advocate. Steve needs to find another like him out of the candidates available, and endorse them both for the at-large seats. If he can't find another reformer, then just endorse Dan. This should not be a personal matter. They don't even need to meet personally if they don't want to. I'd prefer they didn't actually. Just go by past and current accomplishments. Steve should endorse someone who will help reform JC, and what are the choices?
These men can honestly disagree on details, and that will lead to intelligent debate I hope, but they will both vote for what is right for JC I think.

I really don't know much about Rolando, but people had told me he was claiming to want to change the status quo. This just exposes him as a shallow opportunist as far as I'm concerned. Earlier actions before this hinted at this though, such as his refusal to even consider working with Dan in any way. What the hell was he scared of? Maybe this shows he was scared of missing his opportunity to get adopted by an insider like Richardson.

Are there any other reformers running except Dan Levin?

And I'll guess I'll be first to step on some toes here by stating that I think Steve Fulop should get off the fence, put aside whatever differences he has, and endorse Dan Levin now, not later. Otherwise it will only look to me like someone behind the scenes is preventing Steve from endorsing a real reformer.
And this is coming from someone who likes both of these guys, but I only respect honesty.

What kind of commute are you doing?
You are at least a 30 minute walk to the Journal Sq. PATH.
Maybe 45 minute walk to the Grove St. PATH.

Architecturally, there is amazing building stock there. Summit Ave. is very narrow and very busy though. And its a bit isolated from downtown.

I think the area gets dicey as you approach Grand and/or Communipaw. But things may really start to improve if they ever finish the Whitlock Cordage Development, which is fairly close to you there.

I would just buy a folding bike for my commute and ride it to Grove or JS PATH. or there are probably jitneys running along Summit to take you there.

I have a 3-unit I rent out on Communipaw Ave. and use craigslist.org and other resources to rent it out without using agents. I have always found good tenants within a week or two of listing apts. Many love the apts, since they are clean and newly renovated, but some are scared of the area. So I usually have maybe 20 ppl who want to see it because of the photos of the apt., but only 3 end up applying for it once they see the area. Hopefully things will improve. I just kind of accept the situation as it is for now.

Re: Massive PATH and Hudson River Crossings Toll Increase

Just can't stay away

Hmm, I see now why they really want Port Authority jobs specifically:

Overtime pay "flows like water" at the Port Authority, New York State's top auditor said Wednesday, days before a vote on the agency's proposed largest-ever toll and fare hikes.

The bi-state authority paid $85.7 million in overtime last year to 5,360 of its 6,977 employees, an audit by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found. More than two dozen of the top overtime earners boosted their total pay to more than $200,000 in 2009, in many cases more than doubling their base salaries, the audit found. It concluded that the agency has failed to rein in extra pay.

"Management has no clear strategy to achieve its own benchmarks and goals for curbing costs," DiNapoli said. "Before the Port Authority asks for more money to fund its operations, the agency should take a long, hard look at whether its business model for managing overtime really makes sense."

"The Port Authority, in one of the most outright displays of arrogance that we have seen in a long time, has deliberately misled the public in their efforts to stack the hearings," said Jeff Tittel of the New Jersey Sierra Club. "The governor failed to mention all the people in favor had a vested interest, or they get funding from the Port Authority for their livelihood," he added. Tittel also suggested an examination of the "people who make more than our governor, or even double what our governor makes."

DiNapoli's audit found scores of such examples. It examined overtime between 2006 and 2010. Most of the large overtime earners worked in the Port Authority's Public Safety Department or for the PATH train system, it said.

In 2009, for example, 24 PATH and public safety employees earned more in overtime than their base pay ? and one $107,878-a-year employee pulled in an extra $153,530 in overtime by working an average of 34 overtime hours each week. Overtime accounted for more than 20 percent of the average public safety employee's total compensation and 22 percent of the average PATH employees' total pay.

Thanks for the info T-Bird. I think I'm in good enough shape to cover that ride, but I think I would allow myself 2 hrs for 21 miles. Unfortunately, I have no shower at work. I hadn't thought about that. My ride to Grove St. on the folder only takes 5 minutes casually biking so I don't get sweaty. (But this 5 minute bike ride saves me $2.10 and 20 minutes of commute time each trip since I can avoid the light rail trip to Newport)

Let me see if this is right.
Lets say this is all orchestrated, and that the real increase is "only" going to be .50 on the PATH.
That would be $2.25 each way, or $22.50/week, or $1170/year for the pleasure of getting packed like a sardine 5 days a week and deal with delays and the ubiquitous "signal problems" every time a inclement weather hits the area?
I already ride a folding bike from my house to the PATH to avoid paying the ridiculous light rail fees.
Put another way, this means $2.25 for a 5 minute ride from Grove St. (for instance) to WTC. That's 45 cents per minute per person to ride the PATH. Where is all this money going?

There should be zero increases on PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. This is the way you encourage people to get out of their cars. We have property taxes and income taxes to help pay for services like this.

Maybe its time to look into a full road bike to commute over the GWB a few days a week. Has anyone done this commute to the Times Square area? Does it take more than one hour?

Here we are and its 2011 so Whitlock Cordage project has been under construction for 8 years? I can't even remember when they started.

Wally Scruggs and the rest of the grifters at Housing "Trust" of America seem to have collected their take from the Federal grants, etc. and left the actual project high and dry.

HTA should never have gotten this property. It was a sordid, slimy process from the minute the original owner declared bankruptcy. The property was never properly listed so no one knew it was available except for connected insiders, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Its just a huge disappointment after all the work by CABA and JCLC to prevent the bldgs. from being demolished.

Maybe another developer, a local one who cares, will acquire it now? Or will our City Council just twiddle their thumbs while the half-finished bldgs. decay once again in the elements.

I'll try to dig up the latest updates but if anyone knows anything about the property, please take a minute to update this thread.

Currently, its just another black eye for Lafayette.

I've lived on Communipaw and it was very loud.
Some of the dead-end streets off Communipaw are so quiet its like being in the suburbs.

Monitor is nice. Suydam(sp?) is probably an interesting bet to buy on because there are plans to tear down the warehouses there and build market rate housing.

There are two new 2-family bldgs being built right now at 183 Pine St. if anyone is interested. Looks like they're getting brickface in front. Could be nice.

Check out streets like Whiton, which has a lot of trees and some good renovation gems.

I recommend blowing in icynene.
Its a "green" product.

we had about 6-7 inches blown in when we did a gut rehab of our 100 yr. old house and it is saving us a lot in heating bills. I would guess our R-value is between 18 and 30. (ceilings have about 10 inches of foam blown in)

http://local.healthyhouseinstitute.co ... 391026-Morristown_NJ.html

Its best to do this in warm weather though, otherwise, the foam may have trouble binding to the surfaces, which is really important.

Also make sure that in general they blow in enough so that the foam expands just a bit beyond the studs. Later they saw off the excess to make it flush.

So, NOW Christi has saved the tax-payer some cash. Thank you and please keep going.

Sorry to vent, but I am facing possible layoff tomorrow, since our new CTO is outsourcing a bunch of jobs here to a contract co. in India. It makes me ill since I suspect that most of these PVSC jobs were "no-show" or "barely-there" jobs. Yet I work usually about 50+ hrs a week salaried (no over-time, no bonus) as a Java software programmer and make similar money to an administrative clerk on the PVSC dole.

snippet:
Vanessa Czaplicki was a multimedia technician being paid $70,676 a year. John Czaplicki was getting nearly $90,000 a year as a liquid waste acceptance specialist, according to payroll records.
Also fired were Kevin Bolan, an $82,500-a-year account clerk; Kevin Holland, an $81,300 EMS coordinator; and Maureen Critchley, an administrative clerk who was paid $66,300.

$380,776 in taxpayer money saved.

BTW: What is a "multimedia technician" and why would they be working at a sewage processing plant?
