Mmm, I think I might have been one of the people who called the cops in this case. The wife and me saw a guy slumped over the wheel with the car rolling along Duncan Avenue at about 5mph. It was very strange and we thought he'd been shot or something. We saw him roll through a red light at Duncan and Mallory then when we got off the phone with the 911 operator he suddenly woke up, stepped on the gas and swerved off towards the projects. Nice to know he was a firefighter......

It just seems like it should be part of this story -- since the DWI off-duty cop had a blood alcohol level that was over three times the legal limit even though he wasn't tested till several hours after this tragedy.

I never compared wages to the USA, I compared them to what the people were making before, which is next to nothing so7K is good. It does not excuse the fact that they are still exploitative wages, especially when these goods are sold in the West for high premiums.

It makes me laugh that the free trade capitalists like yourself are all in favor of this kind of expoitation when ultimately it only makes a few fat cats at the top of these companies richer.

Factory campus is common and most workers prefer it that way, because the housing and amenites are usually a lot better and more convenient. Plus the company usually offer steep discounts on rent/food to their workers living on campus. This is not the 1920s anymore like you imagined in the movies, with dark factories and evil bosses whipping their workers. Everything is globalized....

I suggest you watch the documentary Mardi Gras: Made in China or read the recent press that Apple got over it's Chinese factories.

To me this does sound like the modern day equivalent of the Mine workers store. Maybe the Chinese like being exploited, I don't begin to assume I can speak for them but I do know that I would not like to work under these conditions. Also I don't shop at Wallmart or K-mart (although I do own an IPOD and have done for years but when this one dies I will not be replacing it) because I don't need the bad karma of feeding that exploitation.

They make it sound so sweet and wonderful. However, just think that you are living in a place where the company pay you piss-poor wages, but hey, you can go to the movies or spend some of those piss-poor wages.... in a movie theater and shops that we, the company, will provide..........

$7k a year might sound good (if you were earning nothing before) but once you spend a good amount of that 7K in the company store and on company provided accomodation, it's a lot less than 7K you have to send to your family. This is pure and simple explotation........

Why is this crap in a Jersey paper anyway? So we can all feel proud that outsourcing and exploitation is a good thing?

Westside Ave runs by Lincoln Park and like all streets in JC there are good bits and bad bits. Near Gauthier and the park is okay, go two blocks the other way to Duncan and it gets iffy.

Where this happened is just over Cumminpaw and it is iffy there too.

Anyway, all the stories in this thread concern crimes commited by Juvvies, I seem to remember the JCPD was trumping falling crime numbers EXCEPT when juvvies are involved. If this is the case then my question is why is the JCPD not STRICTLY enforcing curfew laws which are already on the book?

Many got their shit together in the 90s, joining the ever-prosperous legit system crated by progressive dems and reps. Also, follow-up generations just didn't have the numbers to maintain the mass crime wave of the 60s-80s ...

Oh, thanks for clearing that up.

But wait, England also had a baby boom after WWII and their crime rate is skyrocketing and has been since the early 90's when ours started dropping.

How do you explain that moron?

Easy, our crime figures were low to begin with and most of our crime was related to alcohol abuse! What better way to help this situation by introducing 24-hour drinking!!!!!!

Again, like your namesake you miss the point. American wages are undercut becasue YOU want cheap exploitative labor. If you were willing to pay more for things then you will still have blue collar jobs in this country as opposed to outsourcing everything so you can get you $12 sneakers down at Wallmart. Low wages hurt Americans as well as immigrants.

I was working illegally because my visa ran out and the INS took 6 months to process my paperwork. I was already married to an American and living in NYC. The government was aware of my presence, I filed my application in May, my work permit came through in November. I wasn't allowed to work until my temporary papers came though. How am I supposed to pay the rent in the meantime? Sell drugs??? You tell me.

It was another 18 months before I was able to get my full-time work papers and 5 years before I was finally given my greencard.

A. When did drug dealers get considered to be "Poor people"?

B. If a company is paying BELOW minimum wage then in the state of NJ, that is less than $6.15 an hour. So $5 cuts it. I'm not saying all companies do that, but a lot do.

Before I got married I was in this country without a work permit and worked in a 4 star restaurant in Manhattan for $5 an hour, split shifts (6am-9am, 11am-2pm, 5pm-10pm). It really sucked big time.

1. Of course they shouldn't. They should hire the Mexicans because they are smarter, harder working, more motivated, and cheaper. You just proved my point. Until the "poor Americans" get off their asses, they'll have their lunch eaten by the Mexicans, Indians, Chinese (insert your Developing Nation here). Exactly how it should be.

2. Yes.

And I went hungry sometimes, but I went to school. So now I can compete with (insert your Developing Nation here). At least I hope so.

For "Cheaper" read "Exploitation". Would you get off your ass for below minimum wage? The minumum wage in NJ $6.15 an hour, so lets say the construction company decides they can generously afford $5 an hour, you work an 8 hour day lifting heavy stuff and go home with the princely sum of $40!!! Woohoo! I think I'd rather be standing on the street corner collecting benefits.

But hey, I guess it's the capitalist way right? if you make minimum wage an amount that you can actually live on you'll get more people back to work. If you stop companies from exploiting immigrant labor and maybe you'll find Americans on the construction site......

I've been a fan since living in Ireland back in early 90's and have seen them many times, both there and here. It'll be interesting to see how they make out.

On this subject, Black 47's lead-singer Larry Kirwin is a great writer and "Green Suede Shoes" is like a New York rock n'roll version of Angela's Ashes that I'd heartily recommend.......

It's not even a start. You need to incentivise education. We have free schools (shitty but free nonetheless). Any kid who wants an education will make sure s/he's there every day and doing his/her homework.

Just my humble opinion but school should be mandatory for both kids and adults up thru 4 years of college. Screw working these minimum wage paying jobs. They're just keeping people poor. Even if you lived in Podunk Iowa you can't really support yourself on $6.00/hour.

I also think that if you're not pulling a minumum B average, you should 1) go on probation for 1 year; 2) after the first year and no improvement, receive 1 warning to pull your grades or your kids' grades up or else lose your entitlements and finally 3) after 2 years and no improvements, lose your home, your foodstamps, etc. If within a 5 year period, you turn your attitude around you get another shot to make it...but only 1 shot. You fail the second time, you're outta the game.

America used to be a country to producers...now we're just a nation of whiners. Look at the whines and cries over this topic alone.

I for one would not mind one iota paying thru the nose for 30 years or whatever it took to erase this gimme gimme mindset if it meant that at the end of 30 years, illiteracy, crime, substance abuse and poverty were erased. I don't know about the rest of you but I think it's a small price to pay.

Yes, there are flaws with my opinion I admit but at least I've done something productive instead of bitching about why do they get this and I don't.

I agree that school should be mandatory (it is in Scotland where I come from but only until you are 16). What is the point though, if the school is so poorly funded that you don't learn anything while you are there? It seems that we can find money for metal detectors but not books.

How about also offering ways to get into college other than joining the armed forces. College entry for people who do volunteer work in their own communities perhaps?

This is not whining or being political here, just trying to introduce some fresh ideas (to be shot down no doubt but who cares).
