I just received a flyer for parking at 690 Bergen Ave. The ad states that there will be on site security, 24 hour surveillance and an electronic gate. If you are interested call Noel at 917.593.5660

Charlene Burke is the president of the WBLPNC (west bergen lincoln park neighborhood coalition) . The message board has been defunct for quite some time now, but there still is a pretty active community group. I will send you a pm with info.

I think that you would be okay to park your car on the street. You might have better luck on Fairview or Fairmount as far as finding a spot goes. As far as parking lots, you could try calling the Parking authority about the lot on the corner of Fairview and Bergen.

Thanks for all the info so far! Just wondering, if you already have one car with a parking permit for the area, will they give you a pass to park another car there?

Anyone know how much monthly parking is at Newport Mall? Are there any other weekday parking options in Hamilton Park?
Thanks!

How old is your house? If it's more than 75 yrs old, I would look into the potential hazards of blowing in insulation that could compromise your structure. Many older homes were designed in such a way so as to create an air gap that allows moisture to dissipate properly. Many people don't know this and they insulate only to find out that they have trapped moisture in the walls causing both mold and rotting wood issues. If you are looking to save costs on heating, your best bet is to have interior or exterior storm windows put in and insulating only the attic. Avoid exterior walls, unless it's a newer home.
good luck!

I am a brownstoner survivor too. Went there for years, was treated poorly one day, posted it here, the family found out. Haven't been back since, not really allowed to anyway....
But, thankfully JC has an abundance of good diners.
I am a fan of Al's, miss america and I will occasionally go to the VIP for the potato pancakes. All great places. I've been to the White Mana(sp?) but other than the awesome tiled floor and the cranky cook(which I can appreciate), the food's not so great.
I'd like to give the colonette a try, the name alone is enticing enough for me.

Gifford between JFK and WestSide Ave, is one of the nicest looking streets in all of JC. There are some beautiful Victorians on Gifford towards Bergen, but it's a bit more urban feeling, with the larger apartment buildings near Bergen inviting some louder crowds in the summer. That said, it's pretty safe. As for schools, you're in the same boat with most of the residents in all of Jersey City, there are only a small handful of good public schools. As for private,There's Play and Learn for 3yrs(abbott) - 6th, which is decent, St. Dominic's for Girls highschool that's supposed to be good, and a few other private schools in the neighborhood that I don't know much about yet. good luck!

I hope you got the name of both the United Water supervisor and the cop on duty. Although the problem probably has to do with the ineffeciency of all the different parties, United Water is probably the one responsible for footing the bill, IMHO. They were the ones who had your car towed which is why they covered the bill in the first place. When you write the letter to the mayor's office, make sure that you include the names of all the parties involved. You should also forward your letter to the police department, United Water and the incinerator authority, which I believe councilwoman Mary Spinello works for.
That really sucks and I hope that you at least get financial compensation for it.

WESTSIDE- Expansion of Boyd-McGuiness park
#74
Home away from home
Home away from home

Just a reminder that there will be a public meeting with City officials, including Councilwoman Mary Spinello, for the expansion of the Boyd-McGuiness park, at the corner of Duncan and Kennedy, essentially doubling its size with the aquisition of the empty lot just to its west on Duncan Avenue.

Community Meeting
Expansion of Boyd-McGuiness Park

Friday - November 9th - 6pm to 8pm
St. Dominic's Academy
2572 Kennedy Blvd

This is the only opportunity that Ward B will be given for a neighborhood park aquisition. The only other potential parkland that Ward B has listed in the Jersey City Open Space and Recreation Master Plan is alongside and behind the Lowe's Home Improvement Store on Rt 440. That area has limited access by most of Ward B residents.

Boyd-McGuiness park is located in the most densely occupied section of Ward B containing over 1,000 residential units within a one block radius. There are five senior and handicapped residential buildings representing about 400+ families within a 500 foot distance. Many of these residents are limited in their mobility and a more pleasurable seating plaza would enhance their quality of life.

Many new comers to Jersey City have choosen to reside within West Bergen/Lincoln Park area. Many of these are young professionals that have growing families. The expansion of the Boyd-McGuiness park would allow for a tot-park and seating/play area for young families to gather and socialize. Social gathering places help build strong neighborhoods and reinforce community stability. In addition, it would offering multi-generation interactions.

And as a corner park it has excellent visibility from the street that lends itself to better surveillance by the police. Less incidents of crime and mischief would possibly occur in such an open park setting.

Re: The Smell

One of the by-products of mulch is hydrogen sulfide.
And based on the smell, I don't think that we were exposed to "typical environmental concentrations".

How can hydrogen sulfide affect my health?

Exposure to low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide may cause irritation to the eyes, nose, or throat. It may also cause difficulty in breathing for some asthmatics. Brief exposures to high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (greater than 500 ppm) can cause a loss of consciousness and possibly death. In most cases, the person appears to regain consciousness without any other effects. However, in many individuals, there may be permanent or long-term effects such as headaches, poor attention span, poor memory, and poor motor function. No health effects have been found in humans exposed to typical environmental concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (0.00011?0.00033 ppm).

I live on Fairview and the smell was so bad that I contacted the DEP and filed a report with them. They came out, of course, once the smell had dissipated but they informed me and my neighbor to call it in whenever you notice it. The number to call is 973.656.4444. If they can actually track the smell (which seems obvious) back to the place of origin, it helps them build a stronger case against the company responsible for it.

JERSEY CITY, Oct. 9 ? Four of the city?s 10 municipal court judges ? including the former chief judge ? are being investigated by the New Jersey attorney general?s office on suspicion of fixing parking tickets for friends or family, and in at least one case for a colleague on the bench, officials here say.

The latest news and reader discussions from around the five boroughs and the region.
Go to City Room ?
During the past month, the chief judge has resigned and the three other judges have taken leaves of absence. In addition, the chief justice of the State Supreme Court, Stuart J. Rabner, has assigned the day-to-day operations of the court to a Superior Court judge from Hudson County.

In a state regularly buffeted by the indictments and convictions of public officials, the trial court administrator here, Joseph F. Davis, added an ominous note.

?People are concerned with what they?re seeing,? Mr. Davis, whose position is part of the state court system, said in a recent telephone interview, ?and others may be concerned with our ongoing investigation.?

Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy ? a former Jersey City municipal court judge himself who appointed the recently-resigned chief judge to her $109,265-a-year position ? said he was shocked and saddened.

?People have a right to be disappointed and somewhat angered,? Mr. Healy said in a recent interview. ?I was certainly surprised.?

In this growing and gentrifying city, the disclosure has resonated with many over what is a perennially volatile subject: the scarcity of parking spaces and the price paid for violations.

?It?s unconscionable,? Randy Cuevas, 19, a hip-hop music producer, said on Tuesday after paying the court $110 for a parking violation and additional costs. Next, Mr. Cuevas said, he was headed to the city?s parking authority, where he would pay $120 to remove a Denver boot, which locks illegally parked cars in place. ?I?m paying tickets left and right.?

According to officials here, the judges being investigated include Chief Judge Wanda Molina, who resigned last month, and Pauline E. Sica, Irwin Rosen and Victor G. Sison, who took unpaid leaves. None of the judges responded to telephone calls seeking comment.

The latter three gave the mayor letters expressing their intentions to take leaves of absenc

I think it all depends on what you plant. Many of the green roofs that I have read about incorporate mostly sedums. Particularly because they are drought tolerant, but also because they are low lying, so I would imagine this is not so much an issue. Quote:

I live on Fairview btwn Bergen and JFK. The block you are looking at is fine. Housing wise, it's a denser block, but it's mostly families and some students from St. Peter's. I have a two year old and we walk with her up and down Fairview all the time. The closer you are to JFK, it's quieter. Same applies here as it does to any other part of JC. If it's really late at night, take a cab/ bus from the path. Other than that you are really close to Lincoln Park which is awesome and you'll find that there is a growing population of parents with young kids. Good luck.

renovations or infrastructure repair in decades.

Bergen Ave is also considered another retail corridor. Not sure whether or not this is considered significant, but many of the storefronts along Bergen and Westside Ave did indeed have a facelift. Bergen Ave also just had the sidewalks redone from Journal Square up to Communipaw. The excerpt that was quoted must have been somewhat old as these developments have happened within the last 5 years.

I never said you were exaggerating, I only told the OP to look into your other posts( as well as others) before drawing a conclusion about an entire area.
IMO, JSQ, you are a complete downer in my book, one who can not see how their own actions and perceptions contributes to their demise . Please look into what JSQ has written in other posts before considering his opinions. That said, there are many posts in regards to this area (lookup Near St. Peters, Lincoln Park, West side).
I am a small female who has never had a problem on Bergen, even past Montgomery, and I walk and bike the area at all times of the day and night. It's a pretty busy street in general, I prefer it to JFK in the evening. However, if it's late and you want to play it safe , than there's the no. 10, the Bergen Bus and 24 hour cabs parked in Journal square. I live on Fairview which is a bit further south of where you are looking, and it's fine there.

I think that Jewett From Bergen to West Side Ave is fine. There is a large apartment building on the corner of Jewett near Bergen that used to be a problem, but that's changed a bit in the past couple of years. The houses between Bergen and JFK are quite beautiful. I know a few people who live on that block and I can say that the interiors are amazing. Jewett between JFK and West Side is maybe considered safer by some, although I am partial to the housing stock between JFK and Bergen. I can't comment much on the area past Bergen on Jewett. I have walked by there many times, but not really late at night. I live a block north of you and as I have said multiple times on this list, I have had no major problems. Good luck!

rule of thumb: If they don't run the meter and they accept more than one passenger, than you pay what you think is fair. I don't pay more than 6 bucks, tip included. If they argue, I just remind them that they didn't run the meter so it's your word against theirs. I have never had a problem so far....
And back on topic, it is hard to say what one considers safe when speaking of Jersey City or any city for that matter. To me, this area feels just as safe as downtown, but there are certain streets that I avoid at night. I can not say with certainty what the block is like around belmont and summit, I have walked by there a bunch of times, but not late at night. The OP's best option is to survey the area at night and see what kind of activity goes on.
