Re: MSNBC List of best cities to raise kids
#61
Home away from home
Home away from home

Article is not saying JC is one of the best places to raise kids, instead it is comparing only large cities. So we shouldn't compare JC to towns, like Princeton, Montclair, etc..

Fact that JC is 13 and Newark 46 may say more about how bad most large cities are when it comes to providing a great environment for raising kids compared to JC, instead of how great JC is compared to all other places, including the plethora of towns in NJ and the country.

I don't think anyone is arguing that all of JC is great to raise kids, but to echo Brewster, the city actually has alot to offer, most of it within walking distance, especially for downtown residents. If the JC public schools were in great shape, JC would be much closer to the top of that list.

I always thought that windows and other facade improvements and roofs were not assessment-triggering improvements.

Patching your roof requires a permit? Never had it done but makes little sense that fixing a leaky roof would trigger a reassessment.

There should be a gas valve at the point where the dryer is connected to the gas line. shut that off and you are free to disconnect the dryer safely. Then hire a handyman to do the rest, you can show him what to do to reconnect the gas once he is back there.

If you dont want to touch the gas (makes some people really nervous), then hire a plumber (some handymen will not touch the gas) and tell them about the bracket problem.

Good luck.

Can you purchase the bracket and attach it yourself? I would think it is just a contraption to hold the two together, so as long as you can get behind the units with enough space to work you should be fine. You could always call someone to do it if you find that you can't but at least you will know exactly what you need done...i.e. plumber or handyman.

Like I've said before, paying Vega off only buys one vote. How many councilmembers have been voting yes on those sweet deals for developers again?

I'd prefer one fell swoop but one by one gets it done just as well.

And don't forget, November 3rd is less than a month away with a neck and neck race between Christie and Corzine. Next couple weeks could be interesting.

Re: 'Brick City' documentary stands out in a busy week on the Sundance Channel

Prior to Brick City, I liked what I knew of the Cory Booker story. He seems like a committed public servant who has decided that Newark is where he will cut his teeth. So far, after watching the first three episodes, Brick City looks, feels, and sounds like nothing more than a very long Cory Booker ad. I know he did not film it or had creative control but this just seems like more proof that some people in hollywood have a hard-on for him and decided to do Brick City as a tribute to him.

To whomever is responsible for Brick City: get off Cory Booker's nuts and talk about/show Newark and the people who live and work there and are trying to bring it back. Talk about why Newark is the way it is. Some Newark history please. The show is entitled Brick City afterall, not Cory Booker City. And enough of the Bloods and Crips garbage. Especially disgusting was the funeral interplay between the funeral of a Blood who took his own life and police officer who was killed in the line of duty, leading a passive TV watcher to make comparisons or see similarities? VERY DISTURBING.

Brick City feels like a reality show and very long Cory Booker ad. I expected it to provide more context to explain much of what the characters express as "truths" as if they are the same for poor people in all urban centers. There are some interesting characters in Brick City and I think that the show would be more useful if it allowed these characters to develop, be more introspective, discuss the reasons they think their personal history reads the way it does and what motivates them to do the things they do, instead of spending so much time on "murders are down by X percent today", which means absolutely nothing when kids are being gunned down in the streets.

By raise of hands many of the boys in a classroom indicated they were being raised by single moms, show one that is doing a excellent job despite all the odds. Every single main character that is not on Cory Booker's staff/team or work for the city has a criminal record. Is that representative of the people that live in Brick City?

I hope the last two episodes will make me eat my words.

Re: Tax Abatement Policy Criticism Draws Council Anger

Yvonne,

To have an apples to apples discussion, you'd need to have the revaluation first. Saying someone pays more than 3% on a 1989 valuation and comparing that to someone paying 1.6% on a 2007 valuation is disingenuous to say the least. Yes ratables are part of the city budget. So are PILOTs. It is a line in the city budget that accounted for $88 million in the most recently published budget.

People on abatements pay a hell of a lot of taxes - I'd bet that anyone who bought in the past five years is paying a disproportionate share. The problem isn't that people on abatements are getting a free ride. The problem is that what is paid isn't being distributed equitably.

All of that said, I agree that abatements have been given out far too frequently and under overly generous terms in many cases. Reform needs to happen - mostly in how PILOT dollars are distributed. But that conversation shouldn't begin until after a revaluation.

T-Bird,

Thanks. Relieved that others are really reading Yvonne's statements carefully, analyzing them and making intelligent clarifications. Let's say for example that Yvonne has owned a four family brownstone on Hamilton Park for 15-20 years and has done nothing to her property to trigger a revaluation, she could very well be paying less to the city than people who bought a newly renovated/built/converted 1 bedroom condo down the street or in one of the waterfront towers. That owner could be paying $10-15K to the city annually for that property while Yvonne pays $5K for a property worth twice as much and multiple times larger. From the taxpayer's perspective, it matters little whether most of Yvonne's payment goes to the schools and county while only a small portion of his does. The taxpayer has no control over how the city distributes his payment.

Also, school budgets take the number of students on free and reduced lunches into account, not the number of poor residents. These are two completely different things. For example: 5 poor residents without kids have no impact on the school budget, while 1 resident with 5 kids in public school does.

Really, how can you know the pain of your constituents regarding the state's high cost of living if you don't pay NJ car insurance nor income taxes. Who'd think calling her a carpet-bagger, although a lie, would be a huge compliment.

Also, since she has been a NJ resident for so long, NJ should collect back taxes.

exactly, and I am sure these merchants are not in business to lose money.

Credit card companies make more than enough money, if I can get paid to use their card (points, airline miles, cash back) I'm all in. I use a cc wherever they are accepted and would charge my property taxes if not for city hall's 2.25% surcharge and my mortgage if I could do so without paying extra. If anyone knows how to get around these, please share.

jclxz,

fyi...cc transactions are just as fast as cash, sometimes faster.

my wife is especially fond of dates we go on and she is used to very nice things and excellent food, so no worries there.

she especially likes the fact that our most recent international flights (switzerland, czech republic, london, paris..since late '08) and flights to San fran less than a month ago were paid with points and our upcoming trip to the african continent was also purchased with points. in fact, points covers most of our flights.

2009 new car purchase: cash, but only because the amount was above the maximum the dealer would accept on a cc.

if a merchant has decided that they will take my cc for a $.25 or $$50K purchase, why shouldn't i use my card? I am not forcing them to take my credit card and gladly pay cash for whatever i need when cc are not accepted, like at several byob's in nyc metro.

paying attention to not only my revenues but also to my expenditures has served me well.

last..no need for personal attacks. just address the merits of the argument.

Pennies add up.

nothing wrong with using a credit card for even $.25 as long as you pay your bill in full each month. there are numerous benefits to using your card for as much as possible as long you have a card from an issuer who does not hold you responsible for fraudulent charges.

also, with the right card, points/cashback/airline miles, dispute resolution, insured purchases, record keeping to track your expenses, credit cards are invaluable if used responsibly.

my cc companies make money from merchants whenever i use my card, i get more protection than using cash and airline miles or cash back. all while the cc company makes $0 from me since i am never late and always pay in full.

whenever using cash is able to get you multiple international flights as a bonus just for using cash and you are able to get your money back on demand from ANY merchant when you are not satisfied with their product, i'll use cash exclusively. till then, for people who manage money well, a good credit card rules supreme.

keep your debit card locked up tight as most banks will barely console you if your card is stolen and used.

Nope. I'd say that there are plenty of people who have had actual criminal complaints filed against them, and actually been arrested, who deserve to be indicted next.

Process shmocess.

If they proceed by complaint, they have to indict within a certain amount of time (absent consent from the accused to extend that period--usually given by cooperating witnesses, which I presume Beldini is not).

Based upon my reading, the US Attorney could likely indict Healy now. They probably want to lock the story together with the cooperation of another conspirator before doing so at this point though.

So does this mean that Beldini and Cheatam have told the feds to bring it and so far have not rolled on Healy? My money was on Beldini to talk, because she is 74 and what granny wants to spend her twilight years behind bars, but I guess I was wrong.

Vega resigning as council president achieves nothing if he is still on the council. Much of the political power local politicians have is not from a title but from political capital acquired over years, decades in Vegas' case, of being involved in politics. So if he is still on the council, whomever is council president would be his puppet.

For effective council operation without serious questions being raised about every single vote the council makes, Vega should relinquish the council presidency and his seat on the council while he deals with the federal case alleging that he basically sold his vote on that same council. With his abscense the council could start to reduce his influence, a process that will not happen if he is still on the council in any capacity.

If he got caught smoking weed while he was on vacation in Brazil or in his own back yard, or got a ticket for a DUI, or domestic violence, this would be different as these would be an elected official having problems in his personal life.

However we are talking about being brought up on charges for selling a vote that rightfully belongs to the people who elected him. Any elected official who is in that position really should resign from that elected post as a matter of principle and more importantly for the benefit of the people and locality he represents.

Healy, as colorful as he is with front step full frontal, fight night with cops and rumored drinking problem should not be asked or expected to step down because he is colorful, however if he has similar charges brought against him he should resign.

Anyone on the council or other elected post who is brought up on similar charges should immediately resign, regardless of who they are.

GW: if you are indeed right, healy must really think the electorate is as dumb as a box of rocks. Seeing how slick Healy tries to be, with the 2% longevity increase which will not be affected, I would not be surprised if you are indeed correct. And there it is:

"According to Healy, the amount totals $17,600 and includes contributions he received from Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, City Council President Mariano Vega Jr., former Hudson County Affirmative Action Officer Ed Cheatam and the late political operative Jack Shaw.

All of the donors were arrested as part of last month's corruption sweep, with the exception of Catherine Chin, Shaw's girlfriend, who donated $5,000 to Healy's campaign and $2,500 to the Jersey City Democratic Committee."

The money Dwek gave to Beldini, Vega, Cheatam and Shaw as bribes flowed directly to Healy. Also, Healy "sat in" on a couple of these bribe collection adventures...I mean meetings. They then attempted to launder the money, skirt campaign finance laws, and funnel it to Healy (ofcourse Healy knew ABSOLUTELY nothing about any of this).

Also, not a stretch to conclude that Ms. Chin, Shaw's girlfriend, was simply another person that they used to launder the money.

Not sure what the FBI is waiting for, but Healy certainly needs to be picked up.

Healy is thinking. Very stupid people will fall for this but it is all very simple and very transparent.

By hiring a firm to do an audit, Healy is thinking that if he hires a firm to do an audit several things happen:

1) he finds out what the State will find as the state just announced that it will audit all development deals in JC, Hoboken, Secaucus.

2) he has control over all info uncovered by the audit. By hiring and paying the firm, he is the boss, so he can easily bury the results of the audit after it is complete.

3) It makes him appear as if he is on the right side of this mess.

Healy is really alot dumber than he looks because all these "moves" he is making are shallow, thoughtless and only a stupid public will buy into. The State and Feds will not fall for any of it.

Conclusion: All moves of a cornered, wounded animal.

FBI, please finish him off.
