Re: Amid the Glitter, JC's Growing Pains

I don?t wanna get into a heated discussion here? all I meant to say was people simply can?t afford another tax increase and I don?t think throwing money at the problem is the answer. As for what Troy says, I think his credibility is in question as a result of recent events and I don?t take anything he says at face value. The city is a bureaucratic mess and corruption is still a fact of life. I don?t believe that forcing its citizens to contribute more money to address the problem will do any good.

Most of the discussion about increased crime ? including the Times article - concerns downtown and that?s the reason I commented specifically on downtown. I?m definitely not in favor of people being priced out of an area and being forced to move? it?s simply the reality of what is taking place with the gentrification of downtown. As for the comparison to Hoboken, I think it?s fair to compare its evolution to that of downtown.

What I don't understand is, what's so difficult about hiring more cops? I know it costs money, but I have a feeling most people would rather have higher taxes than get mugged, and if they leave because of the taxes, well, they'd be leaving anyways if the crime situation doesn't improve.

Raise my taxes again and that'll get me thinking about moving. And let's not forget that downtown does not represent all of JC. [thankst gawd.] Besides, I doubt the problem is that simple.

I thought the article leaned toward the sensational side, something that the Times has become quite good at.

Not that anyone gives a hoot, but here?s my theory on this whole brouhaha. I find it hard to believe that crime has increased substantially downtown over the past 10+ years? it?s simply getting more attention because of the demographic change. Educated and wealthy persons are more likely to complain and be influential enough to have their complaints heard by government officials and the media. Just a fact of life. The demographic shift downtown has been dramatic. You have an area populated by ?haves? and ?have-nots.? This in itself is part of the issue and there?s no way crime will be substantially reduced until most of the ?have-nots? are forced to move. Or we enact a police state. I don?t believe this is any different than the situation in Hoboken 20+ years ago.

No offense, but not sure I get it. That's virtually the same title. If you want uncluttered, no thread creep or other kinda creeps, I think you'll have to get the GA to enforce that. Then again, perhaps that's one of the reasons they don't wanna get involved on an internet list. I can relate.

Now, can someone tell me where I can get a red beret and jacket?

Call me oversensitive, but the remark, "It's a little difficult to call the police on crime in your area when the criminals are from your family and are your nieghbors - " sounded mre than a little off base.

In any event, it's a little simplistic to say that there's more focus on cracking down on crime in downtown because other neighborhoods don't complain. Besides, even if that were the case which I don't believe it is, does that justify such action? I'm guessing another reason for the increased focus on downtown is as a result of Fulop. The 12 block from groove street area would be just as well off with no representation rather than Lipshitz.

Anyone know if the GA meeting is still on for today?

b: why is downtown getting this attention? cause we're not part of the problem. It's a little difficult to call the police on crime in your area when the criminals are from your family and are your nieghbors - hence the fact that shit never happened in parts of JC that are more crime ridden. law abiding citizens in those areas are/were justified in keeping quiet. they live with the crime daily. squeaky wheel gets the grease. hoepfully a success and attention in DTJC will spread across to the next neighb and the next after that

Can you find some other way to be "amusing" rather than insulting people? No answer required.

dude - they havent even gotten hear and already you're playing the 'yuppies get everything' card and complaining that they arent patrolling poorer areas. seems like people like you should have been complaining to past mayors about crime since it's obviously been a problem for a while. don't piss on the people who don't care to wallow in a crime infested area. JC has been complacent for so long. if it takes new blood to get some action and shake things up - why complain about it?

The post was meant to be more of an observation, not a rant, not a complaint. The fact is, things are worse in other parts of JC. I think it's ironic that the GA is only now coming to the aid of downtown JC. Where were they 20 years ago? Regardless, I never said they shouldn't come.

Call it playing the yuppie card (as you put it) or whatever. The fact is, downtown is only receiving this kind of attention because it's becoming gentrified. And I wonder what makes you think you know me so well and that I haven't complained about crime where I live, 12 blocks from groove street.

It could be my imagination, but it seems to me crime only became a "problem" in downtown as it became more gentrified. My guess is that it used to be a lot worse and it still is a lot worse in other areas of JC. Unfortunately for those citizens, they do not wield the political clout of downtowners. Why don't the GA patrol Communipaw and Duncan?

Dude, you are asking the police to harass and arrest the high school kids. That is the facist B.S. my family came to this country to get away from.... The worst "crime" you have described is jay walking, which everyone in New Jersey does. If you want to stop jaywalking then put the high metal fences along the median in the road.
I will tell you that alot police officers work undercover to protect there families and get a more honest scoop of what is really happening on the streets, so there are alot more police on the streets than you think.

What I do agree with you is that it would be re-assuring to people to have police walk a beat in uniform.

Nope, you miss the point. It's more than jaywalking, but that's not the point either. All I'm saying is the police should either direct traffic or direct the kids so there are no accidents. The kids really need supervision. Neighbors have complained of them urinating on their property, sitting on their stoops and smoking, etc. This is a large problem that is certainly not the fault of the police, but something they can be a little more proactive in controlling and protecting not only the community but the kids. They can at least do something, anything, instead of standing there like spectators. Otherwise, put them in other crime-ridden neighborhoods where their presence might deter crimes.

I don't know if I missed anything but is jc344 simply a concerned citizen or a member of the government?

My 2 cents. My observations about the police are confined to Harsimus Cove/Hamilton Park, the waterfront and the Dickinson HS area, areas I've lived or worked in. There are police patrolling the waterfront and Dickinson. But I honest to god have never seen them do anything except on occasion direct traffic.

What goes on around Dickinson is unbelievable. The HS kids run rampant during before and after school and during lunch. I've never figured out why the police are there because they do absolutely nothing. The kids cross Palisade & Newark Avenues recklessly coming close to causing injury to themselves or causing accidents. Right in front of the cops. And this has been going on for years.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen 2 cops at the intersection of Warren & Columbus gabbing away and paying no attention to the outside world - apparently they're there to direct traffic in this area full of heavy construction. One cop doing nothing would seem to be sufficient.

I see them walking around the waterfront. I suppose they're there to deter terrorism. Maybe I'm missing something, but strolling around and socializing doesn't seem to be the greatest deterrent.

I have never seen a cop on the beat in Harsimus Cove/Hamilton park. What I have seen though is a parade of police cars and firetrucks double park in front of a deli during lunch. Yes, firetrucks. I never figured out why several firetrucks need to go to the deli - why can't they get their meatball hero delivered instead of coming awfully close to causing accidents by blocking 1 lane of Jersey Ave?

I've bit my tongue for a long time because, regardless of these inappropriate activities, I know these guys put their lives on the line every day. I don't blame the individual cops or firemen... it is a government out of control.

Al's is the best in JC. But I rarely go there cuz VIP is so much closer to me. While the food will never knock anyone's socks off, it's okay. I find it relaxing and it's never crowded. And reliable. Diners are kinda like chains... you know what to expect even though those expectations might not be very high. One of the problems with some downtown places (I emphasize some, not all by any means) is that it's often a crapshoot. I've gone to several places that are closed despite posted hours that indicate otherwise, or the wait is forever or it's overpriced or crowded or attitudinal.

Another reason: try opening a business. You'll be amazed at the lack of enforcement of regulations, favoritism and corruption that exists. And as someone previously mentioned, this is business as usual and no one tries to hide it.

My only comment is that, while I do not live in HP or have ever attended a meeting or ever have an intention to, I find it hard to believe some of the remarks about minnie. I've seen her at work and play and believe she is an asset to HP.

Oh, and Justiceiro's post, regardless of how true/untrue it was, qualifies as the best post of the year.
