Went last week with my wife and we went early because we like to talk, not scream, over dinner. Outside was pretty sunny so we opted for inside quiet. Staff wasn't terribly experienced but they were friendly and attentive. Portions were pretty small for the price but everything was pretty tasty. The worst part was a terrible beer selection: Only 4 beers on tap and two of them were SO fruit-flavored and downright bad. Will probably go back but not in a rush and I hope they sort out their beer selection disaster.

Mr Smith,

Thanks for direct reply in this public forum. I've met with Ms. Gardner in the past and have seen inside. I'm well aware of the ADA issues and the power line relocation for the scaffolding.

So we still have another (incredible) year and a half to go? Wow-

My question remains unanswered as to the cost (so far) to the taxpayers for the past two months on this scaffolding. A direct answer would be appreciated.

Yes, work is going on inside. I know that. Why any scaffolding was put up on the outside months before any exterior work was even scheduled to begin makes no sense. And it's ugly and impedes the sidewalk on 3 sides of the building...

After plastering the outside of the main library with scaffolding roughly 2 months ago, not a single bit of exterior work has been done. The scaffolding is massive and took a major crew about a week to erect. How much are we paying for this (presumably rented) scaffolding to sit there? And are they EVER going to finish the library? It seems like the inmates are running that insane asylum...

This sounds SO ridiculous that I am inclined to believe it is 100% true. Only in JC could you have a parking enforcement agency that is unable to generate a profit.

Completely true. Don't forget the full time JCPA "supervisor" who was also a full time teacher at a county HS. He was surely a HCDO "made man" to get 2 patronage jobs.

Problem with any research into ticket writing productivity is it runs right into protests about quotas. So you can't complain about low levels of ticketing because then they'd have to have a quota, and that's a no-no. I'd love to know how many traffic tickets per cop/hr JCPD produces vs similar cities.

Most of the scooter-driving ticketers are so bloody lazy it's a joke. We've got cars parked into the crosswalks at the intersections of 2 one-way streets and it's basically impossible to turn a truck (like a fire truck) at those intersections. Scooters just drive on by and don't do anything. And then there's the commuters without resident permits. It's a problem (Downtown, especially) for residents. But parking enforcement is so lax that a LOT of commuters have figured out that getting maybe ONE $60 ticket a year is a whole lot cheaper than paying for monthly parking. We don't need quotas, just people who actually do what they're being paid to do. I'd bet they could easily write triple the number of tickets they're writing currently...

Agreed. Such things should be better advertised. This one is simply on the radar of the public more than other events due to the fact that it's actually really good. Word of mouth should not be the only source of info.

Also agree on the lack of publicity. This is about the only one worth spectating, IMO. And IIRC, last year year they went down Jersey then East on Columbus (not Newark) or maybe it was East on Newark to Barrow then south to Columbus. Not through the pedestrian plaza...

Dealing with DMV is never easy and never fun. You learned an expensive lesson. Up to you on going to court but it could easily take 4 hours of sitting on a hard bench and not allowed to use a computer, etc while you listen to one sob story after the next. Ask yourself it that's worth $50 (plus parking if you'd be driving since on-street is mostly metered around the courthouse).

Even decent hardware stores typically carry them. They come in a bunch of sizes, and I think they were maybe $8 apiece the last time I bought some. Taking the old one with you is definitely a good idea.

It's an incredibly easy DIY job, BTW. One single philips head screw at the very top and the center spiral shank just slides sideways to release from the window frame edge. I'd guess YouTube is full of short instructional video clips...

Nice to see we've gotten back on topic and getting useful responses-

I bought 2 houses in DT in 1986, both for under $200k apiece. With the 1988 crash, which went pretty deep for the reasons already mentioned below, I might have gone slightly underwater. But I was in for the long haul.

According to my research, 54 DT brownstones were sold in the past 12 months. That's not a lot, and they aren't making any more. And there's definitely demand from the people with the assets/incomes to afford them. Living in a brownstone is definitely different than apartments, and they're throwing those up faster than I can count. Hoboken is a decent comp. What I'm hearing from Realtors is that the demand is often from people coming from Brooklyn where the house prices are higher but the taxes are far lower than what we pay now. For someone who's looking at $1.6M properties, the additional $20k/year in taxes is only 1.25% of the purchase price. It all comes down to the bottom line...

The old adage of Location, location, location still applies. If you're a short walk to the PATH train and work in Manhattan, then DT most definitely has strong appeal. I think we might see a small dip in pricing and more brownstone sales in the near future as some longtime owners with low or fixed incomes can't afford to stay.

Brewster, Great info in Post #136. I knew Yvonne was blowing smoke, as usual, citing "people lost their homes" and "aggressive foreclosures" without a shred of proof or even direct citation. I was looking for the details on rights of the lien-holder vs. the property owner but you beat me to it. If you can't pay your bills, you sell and pay those bills, including back taxes/liens. It's simple unless you sit on your can and wait until the shit hits the fan and then it's too late. You snooze, you lose...

Yvonne, I'm actually glad the Webmaster didn't take down this thread even though Brewster called you out in some pretty harsh terms. I'm gonna guess that those of us who've been around this Forum for a bunch of years mostly agree with him. You can dish it out, often with a bunch of anecdotal comments or references, but you can't take it when someone fires back with facts. You need a reality check-

On You-Tube there are videos of cropping low-end Kryptonite locks, and even then, watch the struggle they usually have.

I think Brewster's photo has been cut with an angle-grinder or hacksaw, look how smooth the cut is, when something is cropped it will have the depression indents where the jaws bit, and be more uneven.

If someone can find evidence of a hardened D-lock being cropped I'll stand corrected, but I have not seen or heard anything first hand.

Since you asked about rentals, I assume you're looking for short-time need. When my kids were around that age and my siblings were visiting with same-age kids we'd just call around to local friends and borrow a bike and helmet for a ride in LSP and we'd lend ours out in return. Worth a shot if Grove Bikes can't fix you up. Maybe someone here has one they could lend? This thread has already been viewed over 300 times, so maybe?

Science is fun!!!

On that note, as KOCTEP hints, if the back-up in your "house" water (rain + flushes) is higher than whatever the sewer system is seeking, it will find that level somewhere in your house. As a downtown resident, I sometimes get the feeling that level is somewhere halfway between me and the Heights during the intense storms like Friday's.

Also, all this assumes static water pressure; dynamic pressure from movement on the city side may affect check valve functionality at near-neutral pressure, depending on which kind of check valve you may have. Finally, the house water can absolutely accumulate in your pipes (like roof water from Friday's intense dump) faster than it can equalize with where ever the sewer system's "level" may be (1/2 way up to the Heights?) ...thus, again, encouraging it to "level" in your house. To paraphrase Keynes, the pipes can remain out-of-level longer than my floor can remain dry.

Also, jcneighbor: a gentle suggestion to go easy on the snark. Your description of fluid dynamics is incorrect. Static water pressure is not a function of the volume of water, just elevation. A 6" swimming pool of water draining through a straw exerts the same amount of pressure as a 6" test tube at the same elevation draining through a straw of equal diameter. Even if the swimming pool weighs much, much more.

If my science is off, please do let me know. I would appreciate being corrected.

Thanks for the chat everyone and have a safe, dry weekend.

Oh boy, I knew this wouldn't go away easily...

As both Brewster and I already observed, volume has nothing to do with it. You're correcting me for something 2 of us already stated?? I fully understand the different influences of static vs. dynamic pressure, and the fact that "relative" pressure is the issue here. If the pressure in your house pipes is greater that the pressure in the sewer system it will drain. And I also observed that the diameter of any vertical pipe determines what the pressure is at the bottom of that column, measured in pounds per foot of vertical rise. Here's the table:

http://www.kellypipe.com/common-pipe- ... foot-lengths-of-pipe.html

As far as KOCTEP is concerned, a 2" pipe shooting 2' high means that 1) he/she doesn't have a check valve and lives in a very low lying area and 2) a 2" diameter pipe is 3.14 square inches and that would require a pressure of roughly 6.7 PSI to generate that amount of lift. So if you're crazy-enough to live in a low area without a check valve and the street pipes get under pressure (as they always will in those deluges) which exceeds the pressure of the water in the pipes in the house then yes, you will flood. There's a reason why most people don't put toilets or sinks 5' above the sewer line...

Just to clarify with a little physics, water seeks its own level. When your upstairs neighbor flushes, the level in the drainpipe will not rise above the level of the street sewer, it WILL drain, even if you have a check valve. If that sewer level is above your basement toilet or sink, then you have problems already, but they can become shittier.

As for BK, the trendy areas around Park Slope are on relatively high ground.

I was actually waiting to see if there were any other crazy theories besides the rain/gutter runoff or the "don't flush the toilets" or if someone intelligent would chime in with a reality check. Brewster wins!

And I'll add a bit more: It's all about the weight of water in a column. Let's say your vertical sewer drain pipe (or gutter downspout) is 4" in inside diameter. That means that for every foot of vertical rise there is a weight of 5.45 pounds. Now flush a toilet on the ground floor (above a basement) and you're draining about 10 feet down to the sewer line out to the street. Call it 55 pounds of pressure. Ain't no way, NEVER, the main sewer line is even remotely close to that pressure. Your check valve will happily pass it through-

And the great irony of this story is that the crappy pizza place on the Newark Pedestrian Mall, Two Boots Pizza, is actually a chain store but yet is featured with a photo in this piece. See their locations: http://twoboots.com/locations/
And a few posts away at the moment there's a thread about a second CVS Pharmacy being denied a permit. Just because they were two blocks from being outside the restricted district, and despite the need for such a store in that location.

Just remember that Two Boots was largely responsible for banning the food trucks, something that served a lot of people very well, including fun events like Groove on Grove.
