Next time around, find out if there is a mortgage. (I think it appears on public tax records). Mortgage holder will inform the insurer. I also think that there is no objection to replacing bluestone sidewalks with concrete, even in histy distys.

STOP! DTJC is the cheapest "safe" neighborhood in the metro area, and certainly the only one with quick transit to lower Manhattan other than Brooklyn Heights. Yesterday, Metro or AM NY featured East NY or Brownsville, I forget which. Prices are high/life is cheap. This constant onesy-twosy example to show that prices are falling reminds me of something I recently read: The Nerds mantra: The plural of anecdote isn't data.

Oh, and for those who know many, quite a few and/or a number who, can you specify - 07302 has about 40,000 people.

I think we do have a real housing problem in DTJC, the lack of large apartments. A family with a boy and a girl needs a 3 bedroom apartment, add to that a parent who works from home and you might need a study/office as well. Maybe that's why people leave for the burbs. We are losing people because of Le Choix du Roi (look it up).

Golden Cleaners - across from Roman Nose on Newark. Maybe try one pair and see if you like their work. There is also a bespoke tailor on Monmouth or Brunswick who can make pants for you.

Great news - the more private education opportunities the better. Keeping young families in DTJC, or any other JC neighborhood is, I think, vital to the city's renewal. What happens after second grade is what's happening at the French school on 3rd St. - the school keeps adding grades.

Dear Rescue Life and Psyop,

I have no interest in re-hashing the farmers' market issue but I wanted to respond to your posts, which might have misled some JC List readers.

1. We were a proud sponsor of JC Pride. (We support many local groups.) We fed over fifty of their volunteers. They never asked us about outside food vendors and we never asked them to keep food vendors out. Nor would we have. Similarly, we have never objected to the outside food vendors who come to Newark Ave. for "All About Downtown" or indeed for any other occasional event.

2. Business has been great thanks to our many passionate customers and the throngs of people that our new, neighboring restaurants have brought to the street. Like us, they've made huge investments in the neighborhood, pay taxes and employ lots of Jersey City residents. So, we're incredibly excited about the Downtown restaurant scene and economy. As you should be too.

You might have included that unlike people who post under pseudonyms, anyone can walk into the pizzeria and ask for the owner/manager.

Is it really cheaper to blow these up rather than re-hab them? Are they being imploded because of emotional reasons rather than good financial reasons? Housing projects are often appreciated for their design which allows cross-ventilation and lowers the need for a/c. I understand that there are often issues with supervising children but maybe those problems can be solved thru architectural modification and/or social intervention.

Given the popularity of chain stores, I imagine that most people will perceive this as a cockamamie idea that might impact their lifestyle if he were governor. Now, if he instituted jousting on the Newark Avenue mall, that would be a vote getter, I think.

How can you do this - I agree it should be done. Is there something like a rent subsidy program for stores in designated areas? Can health statistics be used to offer a govt. incentive to stores providing easier access to better quality/better selection foods? What about JC initiating a program - Bodega University - which helps existing small stores improve. I've read a lot about big surface stores starting smaller versions for dense inner city areas (no parking, for example), why not offer JC up as a laboratory for doing this in poorer nabes? Just ideas off the top of my head before a full cup of tea - what are your ideas? Oh, and yeah I want a Bodega U. tee shirt.

Not a bad idea

Years ago, at a police meeting the east district captain (Hennie??) suggested that us newbies go to the shore for the summer since we weren't prepared for a dtjc summer. A few weekends away is a great improvement. New York is a summer festival/Jersey City is a summer urinal.

Personally, I would rather go to an actual butcher shop, but since all the good ones in NYC close at like 6pm, I tended to rely on Whole Foods for decent, yet overpriced, dry aged steaks and the like. There's really nowhere around to buy good meat, which kinda sucks. I wonder how good Carrino's beef is.

Check out the meat and fish at Le District next to the Palm Court at Brookfield Place (ne' World Financial Center). I've been pleased with what I've gotten there.

City Hall's council chambers were adorned in green and white today, as the city celebrated the 68th anniversary of Pakistani independence with a special flag raising.

Mayor Steve Fulop and city council members Daniel Rivera, Rolando Rivera and Khemraj "Chico" Ramchal were in attendance as well as several local Pakistani community leaders and a United States diplomat to Pakistan.

"We couldn't be more proud to have a large Pakistani community in the city of Jersey City," Fulop said. "I can tell you, that this Pakistani community is one that I am happy to call partners, happy to call friends and one that I look forward to growing a relationship with long into the future."

Leading the day's ceremony was a group of child singers, who sang the Pakistani National Anthem and "Lab Pe Aaiti Hai Dua," a child's prayer.

I suggest that this be a precedent. Set a date that represents something significant in their history for all the groups that now parade and fly their flag at City Hall.

Just to clarify - I meant this type of ceremony as a substitute for parades and festivals, not in addition to them.

There are hundreds of code violations a lot more serious in this town (like the still operating Brothels of Newark Ave that our former fire inspector was accused of accepting bribes from, per the federal indictment...). Prato just had a squeaky neighbor. The remedy should be as serious as a parking ticket. Pay a fine. Followed by applying and receiving a minor variance.

I'm curious how you folks feel about illegal dwelling units. Thousands of houses in this town are zoned for one family, but may contain 2 or 3 units. It's a much bigger infraction than Prato and its patio furniture but the city knows there are a lot of families that would be homeless if they shut them down en mass. Any renters want to admit that they live in an illegal dwelling? If you dislike your landlord, I know a way to get him in a lot of trouble but you may lose your below market rental...

To the neighbor's of Prato, enjoy the reval.

Actually, the reval data would be an excellent way to uncover illegal units - matching up the number of kitchens in a building with the number of units on the books, would be a start.

Slightly off-topic, but is there a calculator or a back-of-the-envelope calculation that could be used to determine what property taxes might look like after a property reval? I can't decide how to think about the issue without figuring out how it will affect me first. :)

Simplest ballpark - go to Trulia or Zillow and get a current estimate of value. Multiple by JC's effective tax rate (2.3% in 2014). So a $100k home would pay $2.3k. A $1m home $23k.

http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/pdf/lpt/gtr14hud.pdf

Don't you need to do this for every property in JC and then calculate a new tax rate? Let's say that JC is currently valued at one billion and revalued at five billion. The current tax rate must be divided by 5, assuming the budget stays the same, before you can calculate new taxes for an individual property.

Isn't it a testament to a group's success or lack of concern what others think of them to be publicly made fun of (in a gentle way)? WASPS, main stream Jews, Hipsters, etc. probably don't care. I've been waiting for the "what do you expect from Italians" comment to pop up in the Prato thread. Good, no one is resorting to stereotypes - progress.

As food for thought - I can assure you that during the whole Watergate Scandal, RMN was never referred to as that Fu!!ing Quaker. Now SA was another story entirely.
