Mass transit is very important for the future of NJ, esp. the revival of Newark and Jersey City. This fare hike is wrong.

I just found this:

If your Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard expires, you have two years from the expiration date to transfer any remaining money to a new card. Within the first year after expiration, bring your expired card to any subway station and ask the agent to make the transfer. After that time, the expired MetroCard must be sent to MetroCard customer claims. Ask the station agent for a postage-paid Business Reply Envelope.

http://www.mta.info/metrocard/problems.htm

Damn I did have a card with about 10c left back in 2003.

I prefer the separate cards for the separate systems. I use the subway every day, I only use the PATH two or three times a month. With the different fares on the two systems, plus both of their potential discounts, I found it very cumbersome to purchase amounts on a MetroCard that would work out evenly and wind up with a zero balance. Given the mag stripe on MetroCards and the propensity for them to wear out, I don't want to re-use them past the $45 fill that is the current amount that winds up getting a discount and also zeros out properly. The PATHLink is actually a better system. Tap it once, it works, and I can re-fill it online, and I know the card will last forever (or as long as PATH keeps them active). I keep the PATH card as well as my ferry and subway cards and my work ID/Security card in a plastic ID card container which is tethered to my belt, so I never have to pull out my wallet for any of those items.

As somebody else pointed out earlier, whenever you recharge your MTA pay-per-ride card within one month of expiration date, the system will ask you whether you want a new card with the balance transferred to it.

Better yet, MTA launched Easy Pay Xpress card early this year. You can either get a monthly pass or a pay-per-ride card. If the latter, your card will be automatically re-filled with pre-specified amount, say $20 when the balance falls below some threshold, just like EZ-pass.

Still, using PATH smartlink card saves you some money if you don't commute to New York everyday AND go to NYC on weekends frequently.

Warning: both EasyPayXpress and SmartLink Card with auto replenishment record your detailed trip info (time and place). So if you have an affair outside your marriage, make sure you cover it up.

Sheesh. Different strokes for different folks. Maybe they like living there? Brand new unit, cool views. And it's hardly the middle of nowhere. There is a huge shopping plaza nearby, with movie theater, restaurants, a great supermarket, and not too far from Broadway in Bayonne.

It's interesting that when people make different choices based on their own priorities, it's consider stupid. Just because they don't want to live the way you would.

Everyone's gotta live somewhere and if they're happy, good for them.

LOL I don't remember seeing Ian being sarcastic.

But seriously the journalist should get the facts right.

People lie about their commute time, esp. those who live in burbs. They always tell you the best scenario. Commute time should be frequency adjusted. If on average your trains run every 30 minutes, the commute with a best scenario of an hour can be 50% longer.

I no longer read Times articles on real estate. I'd rather read the famous forum which has a lot more useful information.

His U of C research study was covered in the Freakonomics chapter on why drug dealers still live with their mothers. The book expands on his work at U of C and elaborates on gang life in the 90s in Chicago.

It was a really quick read for me.

I like Freakonomics, just pre-ordered Superfreakonomics by the same authors.

I also read The Undercover Economist and The Logic of Life, both by Tim Harford. And ordered Dear Undercover Economist by him.

These are fun read!

That thread is fun to read. One said, "We are well aware of it. Meter price is also very high, it's 5 cents for 10 minutes, although most of Jersey City is 25 cents for 30 minutes", and the other said, "I noticed those streets with the parking meters (.25 cents for 10 mins) has a sign saying private street.", and again, "the next one took .50 cents to give me 10 mins".

Nice website.

I randomly selected 9th St to Harrison, and found that the resulting route is not optimal: 9th St -> Hoboken -> Exchange Pl -> Harrison. Shouldn't it be 9th St -> Journal Sq -> Harrison?

Do you have plan to add a forum dedicated to Northern NJ/NYC transit, or even within all tristate area? That'll be cool.

Ianmac47,

I'm with you on the machines. I'm glad I have a Smartlink card which is easy to refill so that I don't have to use an NJT ticket machine to buy PATH 20/40 ride tickets.

Regarding connections, actually NEC is the most frequent line to transfer at Secaucus, much more than Main/Bergen County line and Morris/Essex line. I'm sure something happened on the day you took the train. My colleagues who took NEC to NY have the opposite rant: they prefer to take trains which bypass Secaucus and complained about the longer transfer than from what the schedule says.

I used to live in Secaucus. Whenever I took a Main/Bergen County line train which arrived Secaucus a few minutes late, I saw people rushing miserably and desperately to their platform. I felt sorry for them, and decided not to move to Bergen County although it's a very nice area.

A further problem with the PATH is the violent and dangerous bouncing. To me this indicates that the track is not maintained well and one day there will be a serious accident. It is so violent that it is not safe at all to move around on a moving PATH train unless you hold on to something the whole time (and even then you're taking some risk). As bad as the subway is, it isn't as bad as the PATH.

I beg to differ. Have you every taken downtown 4/5 trains from Grand Central? Right after the train leaves there's a steep curve and the conductors never bothered to slow down. Assholes.

Another reason why qualified contractors don't like working in residential JC - I'd need a detailed map of parking zones to do any work for residents to avoid a parking ticket. Then again I could just add it to my quote by guessing 2 tickets a day. How available are these parking zones maps and how is the average visiting joe going to be aware of them.

Going by what BM said, if I park at one 2hr spot I would need to move my truck blocks away and into another 'zone' instead of just parking it on the other side of the street like I had been for years without receiving a ticket.

Have you guys read the article from JJ:

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said: "It's worrisome because we should have learned from our mistakes," referring to Liberty Towers, which is one block away on Morris Street. That building also was the scene of a top-floor fire while it was under construction. That 2002 fire was on the 29th floor and the standpipe only went up to the 23rd floor.

Re: car mechanic recommendations in or around JC

Before I moved to JC my favorite place is

S & S Auto Inc
1620 Paterson Plank Rd
Secaucus, NJ 07094
(201) 601-5830

The mechanics there are very honest. I asked them to change air filter, they checked it and told me it's all right and didn't need changing (and didn't charge me for checking). My muffler got a problem last year (after I moved to JC): those bastards at Tuffy wanted to charge me over $700. I went to S & S and got it fixed for a little over $200. They price things very reasonably. There's a NJT bus #190 right in front of their store which can take you to the city or you can change to #2 at Secaucus Plaza to Journal Sq.

In JC my favorite guy now is Mike at Alpha Omega in Journal Sq. You can find a lot of good reviews about him at www.cartalk.com. I got his name from a JCLister's post. He closed his shop recently for personal reasons (he'll be back later) and recommended to me his friend (I forgot the name, maybe Al?)

Tonnelle Auto Repair LLC
201-963-5831 ? 505 Tonnele Ave, Jersey City,NJ

Since it's not as easy to take a bus there to the city I didn't give it a try, but brought my car to S & S again this year for regular maintenance.
