He came around a few weeks ago and said he was closing and was selling off his fixtures. I'd never spoken to him before, so I have no personal feelings for or against him, but I always feel a little bad when a local business closes.

According to some site I found, the Netflix Roku box streams at four bitrates 500kb/sec., 1 MB/sec., 1.6 MB/sec., and 2.2 MB/per sec.

So unless my math is off (which is most likely is) that works out to about 16-30 movies per month (based on 3-4 star quality which I usually get). I typically watch 1-2 movies on a slow day... so my bandwidth is long gone before I even do anything else... like Pandora, Flickr, Itunes, etc...

Whatever you're forced to buy outside of downtown JC is what the downtown market could support, plus any luxuries or leisure items (if done properly). I could use a good hobby store, a CD store, a Rita's... I dunno... minigolf? Pool hall?

I'm pretty laid back about the whole thing... I can understand why the developers and residents right around the Grove PATH would want that block developed into a picture postcard perfect block of cafes and trees and cafes, but I don't know where all the new business owners would come from. The rents the owners are asking in that area are outrageous - one spot on Manila near Bay is going for $12000 a month. I imagine any new entrepreneurs moving into the area would be looking west. At Grove st. prices, the only businesses that could survive would be chain stores or bars, and we all know how hard it is to open a bar around here. I think the paseo to nowhere is a bad idea - again, outdoor cafe seating is nice, but what outdoor cafe will be able to afford the rent on the new space, and the paseo would just come out in the middle of a mural and garbage cans. I think making Newark one-way is a bad idea - I get a lot of people who say they were just driving by and saw my store, and making the street one way would cut in half the number of people seeing me 'just driving by'. If I was a restaurant I'm sure I'd feel differently.

I'd be happy seeing the street repaved, planters, benches, lighting and my Onion newspaper box back.

We may have too many nail and hair salons, but we have a great little bookstore, art supply, tobacco/cigar store, hardware, vintage/consignment clothing stores, art gallerys/framing and a pretty damn nice music store. For restaurants we have french, vietnamese, thai, japanese, chinese, mexican, cuban, spanish, caribbean, italian and good old american all within 3-4 blocks of Grove. I don't think we need redevelopment so much as beautification.

Who are the merchants that everyone is jumping on today? I think I'm the only Newark ave. merchant who's voiced an opinion in this thread and I never said anything about one or two way traffic. Makes no difference to me, and outdoor cafe seating on a one way street isn't the magical key that's going to flood Newark ave. with cute little cafes. Repaving, incentive and time. It's getting there...

I cross that intersection at least twice a day and I've actually been hit by cars twice there in the last year... once right where that car is parked and once in front of Groomingdale's. People driving down 2nd are trying to get across Newark so quickly that they don't even think to look for pedestrians.

I think this guy was the biggest problem... Hofer was naive and stubborn but the cop could have paid a little closer attention to the situation and just said "Dude, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that - you need to go down to the courthouse immediately and straighten this out... oh, and the government is cash only".

Hey Starbucks at Grove has been open a few months... let's throw a parade and give them their own light rail stop. Businesses everywhere have struggled and/or closed. 2 new restaurants within a block of each other in the last year is hardly cause for exclusive reward.

Yeah I agree... so much focus is put on the 2 blocks of Newark between Grove and Jersey... the "Historic Downtown" extends to Coles at least, but there is still a lot west of Coles. I'm all for trees, paving, angled parking, ice in the public urinals etc... but I don't know what purpose a paseo 100' from Grove st. will serve, other than to sound nifty on a condo brochure that lists itself as "Paseo-adjacent".

I've never heard of that... car thieves the world over must have laughed their asses off when they heard that was coming out. "Bend a paper clip thusly and you're in... no more bricks and slim jims and car alarms!". Why would you need to open your windows from outside your car?

If it's not an issue, why are they implementing it? My beloved Roku box let me down for the first time last night when I tried to watch a movie. I checked my cable modem speed and it was so damn slow the CNET test clocked me somewhere around the 384k DSL range. (Altho I just checked here at the store with my business account and I'm getting 2450kbps woohoo)

Well I'm not complaining about the lack of mailboxes (Except that it sucks that they just took away the one at Newark and Coles)... but to ship a package or to pick one up is a major hassle since there's essentially no parking at the main branch. If you just need to mail a letter, leave it in your mailbox and the carrier will take it just like in the olden days.

The amount of data that's transferred is so small that it doesn't make any difference what service you use... if there are any open wifi spots you can get the Tivo wireless adapter and just use that too.

I've just stopped using the post office at all because of it... The Montgomery post office should at least have more parking... They could set up angled 20-minute meters along Washington and stop parking their trucks all down York. Then at least it might be reduced to merely a major annoyance rather than completely unthinkable to go over there to ship anything. Luckily I have the same carrier at home and the store so they just bring any packages right to the store.

Mark.

If you get towed while you're at the mall, well it's your own damn fault... but I got towed when I left my car at Pep Boys for service. The towing place (Danny's) claimed that even though the signs say "Parking for plaza customers only" or whatever, Pop Boys isn't considered part of that plaza... and if you don't park right outside their front door you're towable.

Mark.

(Oh also - it wasn't that my car had been there all day and they assumed I had left it there... Danny admitted that he saw me at Pep Boys and he knew why it was parked there for a few hours.)
